Expanding Families

One Pet at a Time

PawPrints Magazine's Dog Cover Model Winner From Phoebe’s Family: It has been truly heartwarming to see Phoebe showered with so much love and support while being voted as the 2020 PawPrints Dog Cover Model winner. Considering the rough start she had to her life overbred, neglected and abandoned - seeing her in the spotlight has truly Isabel Duran, Phoebe and Ed Walsh been a "rags to riches" story that we're so proud to be a part of. Phoebe came into our lives after being rescued from her horrific conditions by an army of loving volunteers at the Coastal Carolina Saint Bernard Rescue and has absolutely thrived in her new home where she is spoiled rotten and constantly showered with love (and treats).

Custom Pet Stones

She is an amazing girl who loves her training sessions as much as she loves her naps and is always up for an adventure to the beach or around town and especially for road trips! We often look at her and wonder how anyone could discard such a special lady but know that she is right where she belongs now. She has an open heart that is eager to please and has become the perfect companion, co-pilot, friend, fur sister and family member.

Select the stone, font and text and we'll create a beautiful tribute to your best friend.

We hope that Phoebe being on the cover of PawPrints might draw someone's attention to the pages full of amazing animals who only want to be loved and given a forever home. If one animal finds their own loving home from Phoebe's story or photo, it will be priceless. Phoebe would like to thank everyone for their love, support and votes. Special thanks to PawPrints Magazine, Michael Cline Photography, Aunt Kerry's Pet Stop and Coastal Carolina Saint Bernard Rescue for treating her like a supermodel and for highlighting how awesome pet adoption can be!

Visit our website at www.adtc.us Hi there, I’m Jack! I’m a very handsome Lab/Chow mix with dazzling red fur. At just 2-years-old, I recently lost my home due to my owner’s health issues, and I’m a little perplexed by my new situation, but I’m settling in and looking forward to life with a new family. I’m doing very well at keeping my bedding clean and I get along well with other dogs. I’m also neutered and vaccinated. I sure would love to meet you, so please call the New Hanover Humane Society at 910-763-6692 and let’s make an appointment to meet. You’ll be so very glad you did! I am sponsored by Christy Lee. Thank you!

I am Princess Mew-Mew aka Sweetie. I am shy at first, but I blossom into a total sweetheart with a little time. I hum when I am nervous, and chirp when I am relaxed. I love to be groomed and cuddling makes me happy, too. I live with dogs and cats in my foster home and would prefer to not live with A LOT of animals, if I can help it. I am a dainty little Tabby who has been overlooked quite some time. Please call my foster mom, Jill, at 910-620-3783 if you would like to meet me. For info on me or to inquire about the adoption process, call Adopt-An-ANGEL at 910-392-0557 or visit www.adoptanangel.net. I am sponsored by Perry Davis. Thank you!

My name is Victoria and I was found alone and lost after Hurricane Florence. My snipped ear marks me as feral but if I ever lived that life, I am a contented house cat now. I am shy with strangers but I turn into a biscuit-making purr machine when I understand you just want to pet me and love me. I’m approximately 3 to 4-years-old, get along well with dogs, and will tolerate other cats. I was adopted and recently returned when my family couldn't keep me any longer. Please call my foster mom, Jill, at 910-620-3783 for more info. I‘ve had my share of rotten luck and really deserve a shot at a forever family. I heard they exist, but I haven’t met mine yet. I would thrive with a quiet family. If you would like more information about the adoption process, please call Adopt-An-ANGEL at 910-392-0557 or visit us online at www.adoptanangel.net.

Hi, my name is Bubba and I am a 3-year-old male Great Dane mix who came into rescue from a South Carolina shelter. I love to play and run and I get along great with other dogs and cats. I am house-trained and crate-trained and great in public. I can be stubborn at times so continuing my training on a consistent basis is key to keeping me happy. I would do best with an active, adventure-seeking family. If you are interested in adopting me, please email Great Dane Friends of Ruff Love (GDFRL) at info@greatdanefriends.com for an adoption application. Our approval process consists of an application, vet and reference checks, a phone interview, and a home visit. Please note that we do require adopters to have a fenced in yard. If you would like more info or have questions, please call GDFRL at 704-584-9257. You can also check out some of our other Great Danes available for adoption at www.greatdanefriends.com.

I am sponsored in honor of all the wonderful foster mommies & daddies who care for homeless animals.

I am sponsored by Cindy Meyers in loving memory of Harley, Murphy and Sophie.

Hi, my name is Maddox. I am a beautiful boy who is looking for a furever home where I can have a job or an active yet patient human to give me the time and training I need. I can run for hours and then happily snuggle next to you on the couch when you're done. I’m a 1½ to 2-year-old ‘good ole country boy’ who is believed to be a mix of Cattle dog, Collie, and maybe a little something else? I am up to date on my vaccinations and flea/HW preventatives. I’m already neutered and weigh just shy of 60 pounds. I would do best in a home with a sister or as an only pup and no cats, please. For more info, please email WagonTailsFarm@gmail.com or call 252-414-9219. Search WagonTailsFarm on Facebook and like our page.

CAROLINA ANIMAL PROTECTION SOCIETY My name is Pewter and I’m 8-years-old, I’m current on vaccinations and I’m already neutered. I can be shy at first, but once I get to know and trust you, I am very affectionate. I love my wet food and I will let you know when it's time to eat! And I’ll be right there helping you! Hurry up and adopt me! You are too slow!! I have been in foster care for 3-years and I’m (still) patiently waiting for my forever home. You will not regret taking me home! If you would like more info about adopting, please email us at capsrescue@yahoo.com, visit www.capsrescue.com or call us at 910-455-9682.

CANINES FOR SERVICE My name is Aaron and I’m ready to find my forever family! I was rescued by Canines for Service from Columbus County Animal Shelter as a possible candidate for their service dog training program. I am a beautiful Lab and Hound mix who is 1½-years-old, neutered and vaccinated. I’m a bundle of energy and will do well in a home with an active family. I am very sweet and love to play with other dogs my size. I’m unsure of smaller dogs which excludes me from continuing as a service dog. I am a love bug and will make a tremendous pet! To adopt me, call 910-362-8181 or send an email to information@caninesforservice.org.

OPERATION TOP CAT

I am Keke. I’m a 7-year-old 12 pound, gorgeous female (if I do say so myself) with as perfect a personality as you can find. I am calm, loving, affectionate and playful. I enjoy climbing on a cat tree or just hanging out with humans. I have been spayed, vaccinated, microchipped and I’ve had a dental cleaning. I am good with other cats and dogs. To arrange meeting me at Capeside Animal Hospital Cat Care (during business hours) or for more information, please call Sharon at 910-617-3760.

I’m Jasmine, a sweet, quiet, orange and white girl who is 6-months-old. My sister and I were rescued as our time was running out at a shelter. I’m a little shy until I get to know you. I’m fine with other cats but not sure if I would do well with a dog. I've had all of my vet care, I’m spayed, and I tested negative for Feline Leukemia, FIV and heartworm. I’ve had all of my vaccinations and been microchipped, too. For info or to meet me, call 910-200-0612 or email otopcatnc@aol.com. If you’re interested in adopting two cats, my orange sister is available as well.

NHC RABBIT RESCUE OF WILMINGTON My name is Toulouse and I’m a neutered New Zealand mix who was born in November 2019. I’m Seal Point and weigh just 2.9 pounds. I like to explore, groom, and I will present for petting and may occasionally be seen to flop, binky, or thump. I am not shy and I will rarely hide. I often present to a person for petting. I will tolerate sitting in a person’s lap and being petted. I do well with other rabbits and people (including children) because of my laid-back personality traits. For info, email NHCRabbitRescue@gmail.com, call us at 910-686-9171 or visit us online at www.nhcrabbitrescue.com.

THUNDERING PAWS PET ADOPTION I’m Brego, a strikingly handsome boy who is vaccinated, neutered and tested negative for FIV and FeLV. I am a loving and affectionate ‘cuddle buddy’ who is ready for a forever home. I can be timid at first but I’ll curl up beside you or on your lap after we get to know each other. I love chasing a laser pointer and I enjoy being petted. I’ll purr loudly when you show me love. I will do fine as an only cat or with other animal companions (if they give me space). To adopt me, please email thunderingpawsinc@icloud.com or visit thunderingpawsinc.org. For more info, call Linda at 910-322-7013 or Thundering Paws at 910-224-6068.

COASTAL ANIMAL RESCUE EFFORT (C.A.R.E.) I’m a sweet kitty boy named Django and, as you can see, I’m great with kids and enjoy being held! I arrived at the rescue with severely broken legs but, after undergoing surgery and lots of rest, I am completely healed and ready to go home with my new family! I am 6-years-old, neutered, vaccinated and FeLV/FIV negative. I like EVERYONE and I’m very loving. I enjoy children, I’m friendly to other cats and I’m pretty indifferent with dogs. I will rub and purr on you all day long, if you let me! To learn about adopting me, email carewilmington@yahoo.com or call 910-256-2624 and ask to speak with Heather.

PAWSITIVE PARTNERS PRISON PROGRAM I’m Madison, a 1-year-old Redbone Hound! I’m an energetic girl who still has a lot of puppy in me. I’m affectionate and eager to please, and I’m proud to say I graduated from my 7-week course in the Pawsitive Partners Prison Program. I’ve been taught everything I need to know to be a wonderful addition to your home. I know all my basic commands, I walk well on a leash, I’m crate-trained, spayed, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. I will come to my forever home with my crate, leash, harness, and a training DVD. My name is Patsy and I am looking for my forever home! I am an easygoing, happy girl. I love to play and my favorite toy is the laser pointer. My hobbies include: sitting on the window sill and watching birds and people go by, following my human into the bathroom, waiting for someone to pet me, scratching on a scratching post and waiting for more treats. I am laid-back, happy to lay next to someone on their bed or lay by their feet. I love, love, love to be petted. I’m not that fond of being picked up. I find it terrifying. Chicken-flavored Temptations are the best treats. I will be a great friend in a calm household with people who love and respect me (preferably an only pet). I might like to have a buddy but have not had much interaction with furry friends yet. I can be a little shy at first but I always warm up! For info on me or to inquire about the adoption process, call Adopt-An-ANGEL at 910-392-0557 or visit www.adoptanangel.net. I am sponsored by Perry Davis. Thank you!

My name is Rogan and I was brought to CARE by a good Samaritan who wanted to help me. I am very sweet, I love to lay outside in the sun, and I will never turn down a treat! I am 7-years-old and was diagnosed with Scabies, Heartworm Disease, and numerous skin tumors when I first arrived at CARE. I’ve since been treated for all my ailments and I’m ready for a new home! The masses were surgically removed, and though some were cancerous, they were completely excised. I am a particular fella who needs time to adjust to most dogs, but I don’t particularly care for cats. I am good with kids and just want a comfy place to lay my head and rest. To arrange meeting me, call 910-256-2624 or email carewilmington@yahoo.com. I know I’d love to meet you! I am sponsored by Atlantic Animal Hospital who supports Coastal Animal Rescue Effort (C.A.R.E.).

I’m a 2-year-old Labrador mix who is about 58 pounds and loves people, children and cuddling up to give and get lots of love. I am capable and fond of jumping my foster home’s 6-foot fence which is not a safe situation for me. I am known as an opportunistic runner and therefore cannot continue in my service dog training. My perfect home would be someone with experience with a young, energetic Lab, and a desire to continue my training (which is one of my favorite things to do)! I need a safe place to run my energy off and be a dog (an unescapable fence or wide-open land with no proximity to roads). I think I would excel at Frisbee or agility, as I am so smart and love being busy. I get along with other dogs but would probably be better in a home without cats. Call 910-506-3647 or email info@k94paws.org if you’d like more information. An adoption application can be found at www.k94pawsnc.org/adoptionapplication. I am sponsored by Top Toad in the Cotton Exchange in Downtown Wilmington, NC. Thank you! How did an awesome companion like me end up back at the shelter? Unfortunately, a family member became allergic to cats, so now I’m waiting for a new family to discover what a loveable gem I am. My name is Chloe and I’m an affectionate, friendly girl who is very happy to see folks when they enter the room. I’ll always welcome soft rubs on my head and back, and I LOVE being scratched under my chin. I’m in great health and am spayed, vaccinated and litterbox-trained. If you already have another cat at home, you’re in luck because I get along just fine with other kitties! Please come visit and get to know me, I promise you’ll see I’m a wonderful girl who is simply made for family life. Call Pender County Humane Society at 910-259-7022 and ask when it’s a good time to head over! I am sponsored by the Furry Friends Re-sale Shop in honor and memory of all the animals who've passed through the doors of Pender County Humane Society.

All 4 Cats Call or text 910-707-4372 or email info@all4cats.org to meet us! ►Hello, my name is Jutt. I am very shy and need to take time to adjust in a new environment. I am about 1-year-old and trying to find my forever home. The perfect family for me needs to be understanding that I might need more time to adjust than other kitties. They also must enjoy a good game of chase with a string toy (those are my favorite). I am ok with other kitties, I have already been spayed, and I'm up to date on my shots. Now, all I need is you. Could you be the perfect home for me? ◄Hi, my name is Gidgette. I can be a shy little princess at first but once I get to know you, we can have a great time playing with some toys. One of my favorite things is being played with because I really enjoy toys. I am about 11-months-old and have all my shots so I’m ready to go home with you. I am also spayed. If you have been looking for a beautiful furry baby girl to grace your life, I am right here waiting for you. I don't even mind if you have other furry children in your life already, siblings are great. I know everyone loves an outgoing kitty but even us shy babies have tons of love to share. Please take the time to get to know me and my sweet disposition. ►What's up? My name is Michael. Are you looking for the pur-fect guy to sweep you off your feet? I am your cat! I enjoy just spending the day with you. We can watch a movie, eat some snacks or maybe read a book. I come off a little shy at events because they can be a bit overwhelming. I prefer the comfort of your home so we can get to know each other properly. I am just as sweet as can be and can promise to love you unconditionally. At about 1-year-old, I am still pretty young but that doesn't mean anything when it comes to love. I have everything I need to go home with you and become your best friend. Shots - check, neuter - check and all the love and cuddles you could need - check and check.

►Hi, I'm Puzzle and I’m a 9-month-old sweetheart. My foster mom calls me a foodie because there is not much I love more than food. I am a plush girl due to my cuisine affinity. I get along great with cats, dogs and kids. However I am FeLV positive and can only live with dogs or other positive kitties. Please don't let my autoimmune issue prevent you from taking me home, I am a really healthy girl. I sleep on my foster mom every chance I get. Soft blankets are great and laser lights, too. Actually, I don’t discriminate, all toys are great. My foster kid loves to toss jingle balls for me to chase. I also enjoy helping fold the laundry - just kidding, I just want to nap in the clean clothes with my friends. If you are looking for a friend to watch Netflix on the couch with (and snack), I would be happy to join you. ►Do you love long meaningful conversations? Or maybe you are just an amazing listener. Either way, I am your kitty. Comet is my name and being sweet and playful is my game. I am about 1-year-old, up to date with all my shots and neutered. All this means is that I am ready to go home with you now. I’ll tell you the most amazing stories while we cuddle. I hope you can share your love and stories with me, too. I even get along with other kitties. Please take me home. ◄Are past lives your thing? I would be happy to share all of mine with you. My name is Jumanji but unlike the game, I am not full of destruction. I do have some great tales about my life before I was rescued and I would love to hear about your life before I was in it. I am sweet and affectionate. If you have a lap I would love to sit on it. I can keep you warm on cold nights. I’m about 1½-years-old and I’m current on all my shots and spayed. I get along great with my foster siblings. I could be the perfect kitty for your home, will you give me a chance?

I am Miguel and I’m around 1-year-old. They tell me that I’m a Mexican Hairless and Dachshund mix. My look is all natural. Even the Mohawk! I enjoy a variety of things: cuddling with my foster mom to doing zoomies for 20 minutes straight. I love playing with other dogs and my favorite game is ‘catch me if you can’! I can still be shy in new situations but quickly settle in once I feel safe. I am looking for a home with a fenced yard and a dog buddy. I am up to date on all vaccines, neutered and microchipped. I am all ready for my new home! If you are interested in meeting me, please contact my RescueConnect foster mom at 910-508-6818. You may also apply at www.rescueconnectnc.com or email rescueconnectnc@gmail.com for more info. I am sponsored in memory of Georgia Mae Webb. March 19, 2014 ~ March 18, 2020 Hello, my name is Major and I am a neutered 4 to 5-year-old bully breed. I’ve not had a very good life so far. I could spend a lot of time telling you how humans failed me over and over and over... and over. Instead, I’ll tell you about the ones who’ve shown me all the positive and admirable qualities humans can posses. There were some really nice people who sent messages everywhere to get me help. Just before I was to be euthanized, my friends at Freedom Bridge Animal Rescue saved me. For the past 2-months, I have been working with a trainer and learning to be my best self. I’ve been making my trainer really proud and he calls me Buddy. I am looking forward to finding my furever home. I need someone who is experienced and committed to keeping up with my studies so that I can continue to grow and perfect my obedience training. Get this - if my new parents need any advice, they can call my trainer anytime (and won’t even have to pay for it)! I have my paws crossed that someone will give me a chance just like the kind people I’ve met so far. If you would like to meet me, please email freedombridgeanimalrescuenc@gmail.com or call 843-614-0231 and let’s set up a time. I am sponsored in memory of Julia Caoilainn Adams. Will you accept this tulip? I don’t want to be a bachelor anymore! I’m Inky, a Certified Love Bug, and I’m at the top of my class when it comes to cuddling. The volunteers are always carrying me around (I like to be held) and I also have my Lap Cat certification, as lap-sitting is one of my favorite things to do! Yes, it’s safe to say the volunteers absolutely adore me. They know I will make someone so very happy once I am adopted! At 2-years-old, I’m an ebony boy who is neutered, vaccinated and litterbox-trained. I am also FIV positive, but it’s really not that big of a deal. Cats with FIV can live just as long as other cats, and our care is no different than any other feline. Just give us nutritious food, an indoor home, regular vet visits and lots of love! You can find out more about FIV online, talk to your vet or talk to my pals at SOAR by calling 910-457-6340. I am sponsored by SOAR in loving memory of all their wonderful, furry friends who made it safely to the Rainbow Bridge.

Cat Tails Please call 910-253-1375 to adopt us! ◄I live at Cat Tails in Room 3 but I need a new home. My name is Nori and I’m a 3-year-old black female cat. My problem is Pete. He is a 2-year-old black male cat. Nobody can tell us apart. Honestly, we don’t look anything like each other and he’s such a baby! It’s soooo embarrassing to be called a boy’s name. I need to get out of here! Can you help me? I’m already spayed and vaccinated and ready to move in today. ►If you are in quarantine because of this stupid corona virus and you’re bored to tears, I can help. My name is Domino and I’m a 2-year-old, black and white cat. I am a little shy but once I get to know you, I’ll entertain you for hours! Nobody is hoarding games yet, but it might start soon, so come quickly! I’m fully vetted and can be adopted today. ♪ So come on let me entertain you, let me entertain you ♫

▲I am Arizona (pictured on the left) and this is my brother, Arkansas (he’s pictured on the right). We are 6-month-old white kitties who are looking for a home and new names. The state names were cute when we were tiny babies but we’re tired of them now. My brother says everyone calls him “R-kansas” **eye roll**. He’s a little shyer and I’m more outgoing. You can tell us apart because I’m the one who only has half of a tail. Please consider adopting the both of us. There are lots of benefits to adopting a duo: we’ll provide each other with exercise, social interaction, and other forms of mental stimulation. That means we’ll be less likely to be destructive or engage in other problematic behavior.

▲Have you lost your marbles? Why haven’t you come to adopt me yet? I’m Marbles and I’m a 5-month-old boy. Do you wonder how I got my name? The colors of my fur make a swirled pattern on my sides. It’s called a marbled pattern so I’m Marbles, the marbled Tabby. You should come see me ‘cause I’m really a very handsome cat. ◄Do you need more music in your life? You can adopt me and we’ll both be happier! I’m Minuette. I’m sweet and quiet and well-mannered so nobody can figure out why I haven’t been adopted yet. I’m a 1-year-old Calico Tabby. I’m already spayed and vaccinated. I’m beautiful and my bags are packed and ready to go! I hope you’ll call about me soon. ►Let’s Go Crazy and party like it’s 1999. Nothing Compares 2 U so I’ll give you Diamonds and Pearls. My name is Roger Nelson. Did you know that Prince’s real name was Prince Rogers Nelson? He was a skinny little guy with a big head and I’m kind of skinny with a great big head. I don’t know if I was named after him but I like to think I was. If you’re ready for a 3-year-old who can rock your world, come adopt me. Take Me with U, I want your Kiss.

My name is Groot and I am a small, 40 pound, fawn Pit Bull. I am a super, super, unbelievably sweet boy. I am really shy and scared when I first meet people or try new things. I will drop to the floor paralyzed or shake uncontrollably. It may take me a few days to a week to warm up and get my bearings straight. Once I trust you, you are IN and I am devoted to you and I will jump, play and even get the zoomies! I am house-trained, walk well on a leash and do well with older, quieter kids and patient dog people. I prefer to be an only pet since I was never raised around animals (I like some and I don’t like others). I need to always be on a leash since I am a flight risk and I have escape tendencies. My previous owner kept me in a pen for LIFE. With nothing better to do for hours on end and a pretty good brain, I was eventually able to figure out how to escape. I guess you could say I am a survivor with pretty good street smarts. Call my foster mom, Jill, at 910-620-3783 to make an appointment with me. If you would like more information about the adoption process, please call Adopt-An-ANGEL at 910-392-0557 or visit us online at www.adoptanangel.net. Hi guys! My name is Dash, and I'm about 10-years-old. I am vaccinated, neutered, tested negative for heartworms and received a dental. I am your shadow because I love my human so much! Due to some of the anxieties I’ve shown, the rescue feels I probably lived in a crate most of my life. They have worked to calm me and make sure I flourish in my foster home. Everyone who meets me says I am stunning and I do love to meet people! I love to get in the car and go on adventures! I should not be in a home with small children as I am a runner and skittish. I can slip out in a nanosecond and be GONE! I love long walks and all-night cuddles (sleeping under covers as close to you as possible is non-negotiable!). I would prefer to stay home during the day with a canine friend or a human who is retired or works from home. Are you ready for your "rest of forever" Jack Russell? My name is Rune and I am approximately 1-year-old. I’m neutered, current on vaccinations, heartworm negative and microchipped. I’m a rambunctious, happygo-lucky pup! I love to go on adventures! Currently, I’m in foster care with other dogs and cats. I can be a little rude when asking to play (by poking and poking), so having a dog who is okay with my style of play is a must. I’m currently working on food issues around other animals, so having a new family that understands management is also a must. I came into rescue from a neglect/abuse situation. I was found in a ditch at 4-months of age and unable to walk. Both of my back legs had trauma to them, resulting in a special surgery/placement of metal. After months of rehab, I can now run and play! However, I will need my new family to keep an eye on my growth and development. My vet team thinks I’m going to be just fine (which makes my foster family very happy). For more info, email Jaded Paws Rescue at Sarah.jprescue@gmail.com or call 910-389-2372. You may also visit us online at www.jadedpawsrescue.com. I am sponsored by PawPrints Magazine in loving memory of Sugar Pie.

Hi, my name is Daisy Mae and I'm an approximately 9-year-old Beagle mix with the softest coat! I am about 20 pounds, I’m laid back and I love to snuggle! I am blind due to glaucoma which has been treated with a medication to keep the pressure down in my eyes permanently. I quickly learn my surroundings and use my nose to get me around easily. I love sniffing in the yard and sleeping on my bed. I am house-trained, crate-trained and love all people and animals! My foster mom says I'm quiet as a mouse and so easy! Would you please consider making my 2020 special by providing me a forever home? I’m a sweet little Hound mix puppy girl named Sadie. I’m now 6-months-old, and I arrived at the shelter with my brothers and sisters in February. All have been adopted except for me and Oscar. (You can see his photo on page 13.) We are darling pups, just looking for love, affection and a happy home. I’m a bit shy at first, but treats and gentle affection warm me right on up! I’ve received a great checkup from the doctor and am already spayed, vaccinated, and on heartworm prevention. But you shouldn’t just read about me, you should call and find out how to meet me in person! I’m at Pender County Humane Society and I’m ready to melt your heart. Our phone number is 910-259-7022. Sponsored In Loving Memory of Our Precious Boys Milo and Rocco who have gone over the Rainbow Bridge. Mommy and Daddy love and miss you every day!!! All for one and one for all! I love to lay with my human and need someone who can set the pack order and be my guidance. I have spent a lot of time outside and need basic indoor training. I do love to cuddle and would be great with kids and other dogs, but no cats. I need my human to be very familiar with the breed and I also require a fenced in backyard. I have so many years of love to give! I am up to date on vaccines, heartworm negative, and recently neutered. To adopt me, please email RRICarolinas@gmail.com, call 910-821-3504 to leave a message, or visit www.russellrescue.com.

CAROLINA BASSET HOUND RESCUE

MERIT PIT BULL FOUNDATION

My name is Nora and I'm 14years-old. Yes, I am an older girl, but I have much more love left to give. Just ask my foster parents. They say I am good as gold and fit as a fiddle! I am a good all-around mature gal and get around just fine. I have good energy levels and my personality is shining through. I like people, other dogs, and am good in my crate. I will even use a doggie door! These days I am happy, healthy and like attention just like my dog roommates. If you are looking for an older lady with some pep in her step, I just might be your gal. To meet me, call 888-909-2387 or visit www.cbhr.com.

I’m Liberty. I’m a smart girl and a quick learner but I still prefer to “flop” instead of “sit” and “follow to make sure you’re ok, and not having fun without me” instead of “stay.” I’m working on my cratetraining but I like it better if I can go with you. I’m such a polite girl out and about so why not tag along? I like to pretend that I’m really attached to my foster mom but whenever I meet a new person, I’m quick to climb in their lap for cuddles. My foster family says I’m the BEST EVER on a leash and I walk well off leash, too. P.S. If you snore and need someone to blame it on, I’ll have your back! For an explanation of our adoption process, application, and fees, email info@mpbf.org, visit mpbf.org, or call 336-618-PITT.

PawPrints Magazine’s 18th Annual Cover Model Search The Judges’ Decisions Are In: Winning Cover Dog, Runners-Up & Honorable Mentions

Phoebe* Submitted by: Ed Walsh Despite the rough start to her life, Phoebe epitomizes what a great thing adoption is and how it can change lives. As a beautiful, sweet Great Dane with dramatic Harlequin markings, she was overbred and after quite a few litters, she was literally abandoned and discarded, ending up in the pound. She was emaciated and scared, having lost her puppies and everything she had known. Coastal Carolina Saint Bernard Rescue stepped in to save her and that's where we finally met. It was truly love at first sight. As an older girl who showed the signs of over-breeding, she was not a calendar model but she was perfect to us. We adopted her Photo by: Michael Cline Photography and it's changed all our lives. She was given a new name, Phoebe, new pretty girl collar with flower and bow accessories and has been spoiled rotten ever since. Showered with love and snacks from her fur and skin brothers and sisters, not a moment goes by that she isn't reminded that she's truly loved by a family who will never abandon her. She went from being abandoned and starved to a scary pound cage to a loving foster home with a rescue organization to where she is now...stretched out sleeping in a comfy king sized bed, taking road trips and being treated like a princess. She's flourished in our home and has made a complete transformation. She loves her training sessions and day trips around town almost as much as her naps and has comfortably fit into the lifestyle she deserves. In my opinion, Phoebe is the perfect cover girl for your magazine because her story is as beautiful as she is. It shows that caring people can rescue a beautiful girl from horrible conditions, find her a loving, forever home, and truly make a difference.

Major* Submitted by: Katie Thompson Meet Major. He's an avid hiker and tennis ball enthusiast rescued from the City of Florence Humane Society in Florence, SC. Of his 2 siblings, he enjoys the outdoors the most and though he is deaf, he is the most attentive and focused dog I've ever known. When Major was found, he was lying in a ditch, peppered with bird shot and too afraid to move. It is still unclear whether he was lost by his original owner, or thrown away due to his disability that would affect his ability to work as a cattle dog. Major stayed with several fosters and even was adopted out once before we found each other. His breed is not for everyone. They need to be active and kept engaged and Major needed twice the work since he can't hear his commands. He may not know what his name sounds like but Major has learned a handful of signs that we use every day and he "listens" better than most hearing dogs. He looks for small changes in facial expression and knows immediately if I'm displeased, excited or upset. Major gets more and more confident as the years go on and because of him, so do I. He lives with me and his 2 other canine siblings in an RV here on the coast of ENC. I spend my working days at Wilmington Animal Healthcare as an assistant and I spend my off days and evenings with this handsome guy. Major has taught me the importance of being quiet, calm and focused. Seeing his excitement when we go for small hikes reminds me to enjoy the little things. He has offered cuddles and asked for belly rubs when he knows my heart is hurting. In short, my life is better because of him. When people ask me why I prefer to rescue, Major will always, always be my answer.

Feature Story The bottom line, though, is that I truly appreciate her. I appreciate the sacrifices she daily makes to put my needs above hers. I appreciate the beautiful friend that she is. I love (beyond words) my sweet Lucy Long Legs. Thank you to the rescue group who saved my girl so she could save me!

without him. He acclimated to our home and to Wilmington; adoring the pet community here. Jack treasured Pawz in the Park, thrives in his pet-training classes, paces around at the dog parks, and loves to show off his prance on his weekly walks on the boardwalk in downtown Wilmington. Jack would be a pawfect pet for the cover because he has taught our family and friends how all pets, no matter their past experiences or first appearances, truly deserve a chance for a furever home.

Lucy* Submitted by: Martha Courtney Let me introduce you to my beautiful Lucy Long Legs. We met almost 6-years ago when we fell hopelessly in love with each other. I had lost two senior rescued fur babies the previous year after loving them for 17 and 19-years. I was also on the verge of losing another. I knew I had to adopt soon or I might give up hope of loving another pup. I happened upon Lucy at an adoption fair in a parking lot. Well, actually it was meant to be! I thought I would just look and ended up holding this terrified little striped brindle girl. We bonded on my shoulder, next to my heart, and Lucy went home with me. I realized early on that I didn’t rescue her after all. Through some hardships in life and the loss of my other senior fur baby I quickly realized it was she who rescued me. We went through the wild puppy/teenage years and many people told me she wasn’t really suitable for a senior woman. But I knew what was inside Lucy...a heart full of devoted unconditional love. I honestly cannot imagine my life without her. When we met, Lucy was a three pound terrified bundle of needs. Now she is almost sixty pounds of healthy, happy, devoted love. Whenever you wonder if a rescue pet can be all that you want and need, the answer is a definite yes...even if you don’t fully realize it at the time. A rescue fur baby may present itself as a needy, scrawny, scared little (or big) ball of fluff that needs your love. But when you adopt that baby you soon realize that you were the one who needed the love after all. What do I love about my sweet girl? I adore Lucy’s big brown eyes, her long legs, her soft kisses and her snuggly self by my side at night. I love the way she leans on me, tucks her head under my chin, and takes her paw to pull my arm over to snuggle her.

Jack* Submitted by: Brianna Walter Last March I received a call regarding a dog who had been abandoned on a friend’s farm. She suspected the dog was initially bred for dog fighting. My husband and I immediately drove an hour to see if we would be able to help out in some way. When we arrived the pup was extremely anxious, scared, and displayed signs of abuse and malnourishment. With much patience and a few treats we were able to earn his trust to venture home with us. We called shelters in the surrounding counties, posted pictures to social media and rescue organizations, and scanned for a microchip. The only confirmation we received from his vet visits was he had been shot numerous times in his back side, hadn’t eaten in a while, and had 4 different types of infections. Weeks went by, yet no one came forward to claim him. However, this was a positive because we had fallen in love with Jack the minute we met him. Jack became an instant family member, joining our 8-year-old dog, 4-year-old cat, and 1-year-old beta fish. Jack was a quick learner, learning sit, stay, shake, and down within the first two weeks. Unlike our other dog, he loves toys. He has an entire family of stuffed best friends, which he herds from one dog bed, to my bed, to the couch, and back and forth all day long. Even though Jack had a difficult beginning he is one of the happiest dogs, exhibiting the kindest and calmest demeanors. His finest attribute is his wild ears-as they perk high in the air, curling around his chin. Jack, who quickly earned the nickname of Buddy, doesn’t give kisses; instead he prefers to give nose boops to show his affection. Jack has been in our family for almost a year now, and man we cannot imagine life

MoLLe* Submitted by: April Radford My husband is a combat veteran who has been struggling for years with his PTS (formerly known as PTSD). Drugs made him feel “not himself” and zombie like at times. In early 2015, I was talking to a friend who works with Veteran’s groups and mentioned that Ian would love a Service Dog, but we couldn’t afford the $15,000$30,000 to get one. That friend contacted me a few days later saying, “I know of an agency who donated Service Dogs to Veterans. Are you interested?” We said yes! On the afternoon of June 3, 2015, we met with one of the trainers and Molly picked my Ian! There were 6 of us just standing there and Molly came out of the truck, walked straight to Ian and sat next to him. Ian kept the name Molly but changed the spelling to MoLLE which is a military acronym for “Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment” and that is exactly what she does for Ian. Within the first few days we noticed a difference in Ian. There was an adjustment period, but their bond was instant. Ian still doesn’t like to go out in unfamiliar crowds, but he will with MoLLE. If for any reason Ian must leave MoLLE home with me, MoLLE will sit on the couch until she hears his vehicle, then she runs to the door to greet him. Ian plays soccer and is very “passionate” when playing and it confuses MoLLE, so if I’m not going to the soccer field to insure she doesn’t take his outburst as cues to run on the field and assist him, she will stay home with me. She will be 7 on October 10, just 4 days after Ian’s birthday. We didn’t rescue MoLLE, she rescued Ian!

Leo* Submitted by: Jess Harrison My name is Leonidas "Leo" Harrison! I have a sad past, but bright future. I was left in a hot car in September 2019 by a not so nice hooman and I unfortunately had heat stroke and became unresponsive. The not so nice hooman thought I was dead and dumped me in a dumpster in downtown Wilmington. The nice kitchen staff there found me and rushed me to the ER vet off Greenville Avenue where one of the vets (Rudi Richmand) and her team nursed me back to health and gave me a second chance at life. Rudi asked my Mommy, Jess Harrison, if she wanted to adopt me because she had just lost her dog in August and she knew my Mommy was sad. Mommy tells me that she found her doggo before me in the PawPrints Magazine - her name was Mystic and she is in heaven now, but Mommy shows me pictures of her - I think I would have liked her! Not long after I was home with my Mom, she noticed severe burns on my leg and side from being trapped in the car and I had to have antibiotics, pain pills, surgery and had to wear a funny looking cone for over a month. I couldn't go on walks because of the stitches so my Mommy carried me everywhere and cleaned my burns daily. Now I am all healed up, but I'm missing my beautiful fur - Mommy says I am a handsome boy anyways! Mommy says her life has changed since I came home because she is so happy and honored to be the one who gives me a second chance on life and love. She seems really happy now and sings to me and is patient with me because I am scared of other hoomans sometimes. I think I should be on the cover because I am the perfect illustration of a rescue dog and hopefully I can encourage other hoomans to take chances on those of us doggos that don't have the perfect past. We are also deserving of love and with a little patience and training we can be the best doggos EVER!

Sara* Submitted by: Courtney Fitzpatrick Sara has been in my life since she was 5 (from Adopt-An-ANGEL) and she is now 11! She deserves to be the cover model because she is truly special. She has been through thick and thin with me. She showed me how to love myself even in my darkest days. I am a survivor of domestic violence and she is helping me through the PTSD of that relationship. She is a registered emotional therapy dog and she lives up to it! She truly deserves this because she is a strong girl and shows you how to love others and yourself at the same time!

chip and he had me scanned to find my owner. She came and got me but my new best friend told her if she ever wanted to get rid of me he’d love to have me. The very next day she took me back to my new best friend and I was so happy and excited. My new best friend was so glad to have me. We play and run and he loves having me sleep with him. My new family has been so good to me and I love them very much. They changed my name to Chance because “by chance” I showed up at the perfect house. I am loving, obedient and so much fun. I want to be on the cover to show everyone how handsome and well taken care of I am. My coat is always shining and I’m big and strong. I am proof that all dogs can be loved, not just the expensive breeds. I don’t know which breed I am but my best friend doesn’t care. I love my big red Kong ball, my mom and Mimi fill it with peanut butter! At night my dad and I have ice cream. I always know when he opens that pantry door to get a cone that my frosty paws comes out next. I love my family and I’m so glad I found them.

Skyler June* Submitted by: Diane Sullivan This is Skyler June. She was born in March of 2010. Skyler was found wandering a grocery store parking lot and taken to the New Hanover County Animal Shelter, where we adopted her when she was 12-weeks-old. me and my husband, but of our cat and other dogs. Sky has gotten pretty sick a number of times since we’ve had her - a brain “event” that had her at NC State Veterinary Hospital for a bit, herniated discs in her back, and most recently two kinds of cancer, with trips to Cary for immunotherapy twice a year, yet she doesn’t ever seem to know she’s sick. She’s so sweet, loves our grandkids - well, she loves everyone, really. She’s a real character, a very happy girl who makes everyone happy around her, and I’m so grateful that my husband found himself at the shelter that day in June, 2010. She deserves to be on the magazine cover because she completely represents a little soul with an undeniable zest for life, who doesn’t let anything keep her down!

In late 2016, we noticed our 15-year-old Jack Russell Terrier (JRT), Roxanne, was slowing down and had signs of dementia. We thought having a "sister" would help, maybe add a little pep to her step. We found Dixie Mae. She is a JRT/mini Doxie mix. She had been rescued from a shelter in Georgia and was fostered in Pennsylvania. On the Saturday after Thanksgiving 2016, a "train" of volunteers brought her close to us. When we arrived at the pick up destination, I cried with joy. We immediately fell in love. How did this beautiful creature end up in a shelter? She was a bit shy at first and she was afraid of brooms and my husband. We got through it with love and patience. The girls got along great, as long as Dixie followed Roxanne's rules! They were very close and Dixie helped with some of the "jobs" that JRTs love. Unfortunately we lost Roxanne 6-months later. It was the most heartbreaking moment of my life. That's when Dixie Mae started her real job. She helped me get through a very dark period of my life without judgment and plenty of love. It's funny how dogs know what you need. I thought that we rescued her but she rescued me! I thank God everyday for the gift of my girl.

Hi there! I’m a 9-month-old pup named Buster (A120098) and I have been with my shelter friends for a few weeks learning how to be a confident boy. I bond intensely and I am looking for a human who will allow me to connect with them and help me continue to gain the confidence I need to explore this big ole' world. I have all of my basic manners down pat and to me, there is no bigger reward than a doggie biscuit, or even a human one. I’ve heard those biscuits from McDonald's are pretty good. And, as you can see from my photo, I’m very good at sitting on command and waiting for one! I am already neutered and my adoption fee includes a physical examination, a heartworm test and rabies vaccination. Just a few minutes with me and I bet you'll just adore me! Call Brunswick County Sheriff’s Animal Protective Services at 910-754-8204 with questions and I hope to see you soon!

We three gems are Diamond, Citron and Sparkles, 11-month-old siblings. That’s me, Diamond, on the far left. I’m a gray, black, marbled Tabby boy with white patches. My fur is stunning and reminds everyone of a mini-tiger. I even have some orange tabby stripes on my belly! I have the biggest purr and personality along with my brother Citron (pictured in the middle). Citron also has such unique markings (gray, black marbled Tabby with white patches) and THE most expressive face! Did I mention he's a love bug? Then there's Sparkles (far right), the only girl of the trio (gray/black Tabby). She isn't as boisterous as us boys, but she’s just as sweet with the tiniest meow and gentle nature. We are all well-adjusted kitties and have our kitty bags packed. Please consider adopting one or two of us since a pair of kittens is half the work! We will entertain each other, have someone our own age to learn with and be besties for life! If you have any questions about the adoption process, please call Cat Adoption Team at 910-792-9014. We are sponsored by ECM Corporation. Thank you!

Being an owner surrender, I really miss the comforts of home and I hope to be snuggled back up with a new family soon. I kinda like cats, so if you have one of those furry animals, I could be their friend, too! Being on the lighter side of the scale makes me the perfect lap dog. Come on by and check me out, I might just be your next best buddy!

◄Quiet and sweet is my game. Hello, I’m Beau and I am here being well-loved, but wanting to find myself on a nice soft couch to cuddle in a new home! I’m a 2-year-old, 46-pound bundle of wonder and I would love to have my personality peak for the right person or family. I’m hoping so badly that my gentle eyes and soft-spoken demeanor will draw you in. Please come and visit me at Paws Place and let me get to know you. ◄Hi there! I’m a Lab mix named Tanner and even though I had a rough beginning in life, the folks at Paws Place are making me feel cared for and loved. Once I get to know you, I am a leaner, as I want to get all your attention. I can be a little shy, but you can coax me into your heart with sweet talk and some treats! My new home would be ideal with a fenced yard and some extra walks in the neighborhood. And perhaps when playtime is over, I can snuggle up on the couch and share my kisses with you. Come check me out – I may be the right fella for you!

►Holly Anne is my name and I am a super-sweet, shy lady. Being 4-years-old, I still have lots to offer and am wanting to get back into a home full of love and patience. I get along with other dogs and am house-trained. And if you want to know a secret, I get along with cats, too! If an absolute cutie pie is your desire, come and adopt me! ◄Don’t I have the coolest smile? Hello, I’m Echo, a 2-year-old Coonhound mix boy who loves to be petted and given attention. Being a newer fella here, I’m learning all kinds of new stuff. I like to take walks, play, and of course, I’m sure to greet everyone who walks by me. I know my next forever home is also looking for a sweet boy like me. Is it you?

◄Hello there, I am a sweet, but shy, Labrador Retriever mix girl named Skye. I am very curious and happy, but a little bit cautious. I have discovered my love of toys and going for walks. I could totally be an avid adventurer with the right person or family, and I can see myself being active and part of a great loving unit. I’m just 1-year-old, so we could have lots of fun and great times together! I will keep peeking out, hoping to see you driving up to meet me. Call for an appointment.

Can we stop the suffering? I wish I could tell you my name, but it has been so long since someone said it, that I’ve now forgotten what it was. At barely 12-months of age, I was abandoned and left to suffer in the weather without shelter, warmth, love, or food. I rarely experienced human touch, a full bowl of food, or a place I could call home. I was running with my brother and mother in the woods of Jacksonville when the cold hard snap of metal crushed my foot. The prongs cut deep into my bones. Crying out in agony with no one to hear, I was left to whimper with the pain. Not able to get help, I laid there for days in the wind and rain, not able to find protection. Finally, my running mates (my abandoned mom and brother), helped me find my way into Susan’s yard. Her brother-in-law removed the trap but, after five days, my foot was rotting away. Susan, desperate to find help, finally sat in her car outside the Onslow Shelter. Crying and knowing this would be the only humane option for me, she received a call from OCPAW. They contacted Onslow Animal Hospital and asked Dr. Sheegog for help. The doctor said to bring me in and by 3 pm, I was in surgery. This Jacksonville veterinarian gave incredible compassion and assistance. However, on Wednesday, March 11, I passed away on the operating table after my second surgery. Two hours later, a call came from a woman in Wilmington who had heard my story and wanted to adopt me. Everyone who came into contact with me commented on what a sweet dog I was. Many sweet pups need our help, and so many amazing folks are trying to help them. Thank you, Susan, (my foster mom), Dr. Sheegog and Brandy of Onslow Animal Hospital and supporters of OCPAW (Onslow County Partners for Animal Welfare). Thanks to everyone for your donations which allow OCPAW to help a pup like me and also support our low-cost spay/neuter program. A metal leg trap left out for animals to happen upon is genuinely an act of cruelty. OCPAW will contact the proper authorities about the setting of unmonitored animal traps in Jacksonville and the suffering caused by not spaying or neutering companion animals.

For additional information or to support OCPAW’s efforts, please call 484-883-3552 or visit www.oc-paw.com.

News & Happenings COVID-19 will Become a Shelter Pet Crisis Unless our Community Responds It is simply a matter of time and math. Make no mistake, cats and dogs will have to be unnecessarily euthanized if we do nothing. But it is within our control to solve this problem. Now isn’t the time to criticize our local animal shelters.

It’s a Great Time to Adopt or Foster

Want to Help? Offer Support & Supplies

If you’ve been considering adding a dog or cat to your family, now is an excellent time to do so. Shelters are undergoing increased pressure due to restricted hours and a cut-back on volunteers, while adoption events have been cancelled or postponed. Through adoption and/or fostering, you can help ease the burden on overcrowded shelters while helping yourself and the animal at the same time. It’s a mutually beneficial situation. Says Karalyln Aronow, Vice President of Operations at the East Bay SPCA, “Right now people are feeling isolated and having a pet is wonderful. You can take them out for walks but also have a sense of companionship in your home. For the shelter animals, it gives them that break from the shelter setting. Getting the animals into a home-like setting where they can interact with humans all day is really beneficial for their mental well-being.”

Please contact your local shelters to see how you can help them with supplies needed during this crisis. Items such as dry dog/cat food, wet dog/cat food, kitten formula, cat litter and cleaning supplies are always in high demand. Tax deductible monetary donations will also be greatly appreciated. If you are ordering supplies through Amazon, shop on Amazon Smile and select your favorite local non-profit as your preferred charity. The AmazonSmile Foundation will then donate 0.5% of the purchase price of eligible products to the organization you have chosen. Be sure to follow local rescues on social media. As COVID-19 news can change every day, shelters will be giving updates as to their current needs and situations. Websites, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter are various avenues that rescues will use to communicate with the public.

If you would like to adopt or foster, please call, email or message shelters in advance as operating hours may have changed. April 2020 www.facebook.com/PawPrintsMagazine 43

My name is Pepper and I’m a Walker Hound and Labrador Retriever mix. I’m already spayed and up to date on vaccines. At 4-months of age, I’m a big girl. I love to run around in a fenced yard and I play well with other dogs. I love to eat, so positive / treat-reward training will pair nicely with my willingness to please. I’m a sweet baby who wants a home to call my own. I’m in a litter of eight pups who were part of an unplanned litter and surrendered by our mom’s family. Please give me a chance and I will be your new best friend. To adopt me or one of my siblings, email Columbus Humane Society at catchvenus@gmail.com, call 910-234-1681, or visit www.columbushumanesociety.org.

Hello there! My name is Maggie (A120665). I’m a 10-years-young Treeing Walker Hound girl who is in need of a forever home. I’m very calm and very happy, and I don't require much more than a warm bed or couch, a nice walk and a loving hand. My adoption fee includes spay surgery, a physical exam, a heartworm test and rabies vaccination. If you're looking for a lowmaintenance doggie, I may just be the one who fits the bill. Please adopt me! I’m at Brunswick County Sheriff’s Animal Protective Services. If you have any questions or want to arrange a meeting, call my friends at 910-754-8204.

I am sponsored in loving memory of Levi D. Forever number 1.

I am great with dogs, but not so great with cats. I am house-trained, pretty wellmannered in the house and very laid back. I lean to the lazy side and would love to sleep at your feet while you watch TV, Netflix, Hulu or even laser discs (if you’re old school). Call my foster mom, Jill, at 910-620-3783 to meet me in fur-son. ◄My name is Sunny and I am shy at first but when I warm up to you, I am sweet, talkative and playful. To bring me into your life, call my foster mom, Jackie, at 910-523-9719.
