“Paul Sakoilsky is a painter with a philosophical background and formidable skill for oratory and writing. The artworks are a concrete engagement which proclaim freedom in the possibility of envisioning a world different from the one we inhabit”. Mike Watson, art writer & Curator (Rome, 2012). “Paul Sakoilsky has made performances and paintings as hybridised ‘autopsies’ of media images, in visceral terms, that act upon the daylight utopias of consumerism and media ideology. His ongoing project The Dark Times is a newspaper in the potlatch spirit, described in the terms of Jean Baudrillard’s concept of hegemony, as an ultimate debasement of value.“ Peter Lewis, 2011 Born in 1964, Sakoilsky was brought up in the Far East and East Anglia, where he created his first performance art works. Obsessed by poetry, Sakoilsky came to London in 1982, where he played in bands, made experimental films/audio-works, wrote prolifically, and met the poet George Barker (then in his 70s), who briefly became a mentor. Sakoilsky organised poetry readings that evolved into performance pieces, and, from 1994 to 2002 was based at 30 Underwood St Gallery, Shoreditch, where he had a studio, performed and curated, whilst also studying at the radical Philosophy Department of the University of North London. In 1997, the Arts Council funded Sakoilsky to travel to Austria to co-curate the first UK exhibition of Hermann Nitsch. A defining body of autobiographical and extreme performance work followed, shown mainly in Central Europe, to include the Cry series, Mother Hysteria and the Kunst-Clown Action series, his first solo show in Budapest, as well as academic articles on Nitsch and the Dialogues text series. Since 2007, Sakoilsky has worked increasingly in the medium of paint. Series of works include The Dark Times project, Poor-traits/Portraits, Unfamiliar, The Wind of Aten and the Reg series. From 20102012, he was Resident Artist at Red Gallery, Shoreditch, for whom he also co-curated the landmark show East End Promise: A Story of Cultural Migrants (Londonewcastle Project Space).

London based artist & writer In 2011 he began work on a series of life-studies, initially called View. In 2012 during a residency in Naples with Fondazione Morra, he switched to oil painting and working almost entirely from life. This led to an intense, ongoing engagement with oil painting and a large new body of work of cityscapes, portraits and other subjects. “The Dark Times and The Wind of Aten series are situated within a socio-political aesthetic: semiotics, détournement, critique, where the painterly aspect cannot help but be over-determined by the content and form of the mediated world of newspapers with the former and vintage women’s magazines in the latter. I often think such work are more akin to a playful epistemology (study of knowledge, in this case, an often purposely misdirected, ideologically driven form of ‘knowledge’). On the other hand, the main focus of my painting since early 2012 (excepting works made for particular projects and exhbitions), is more akin to ontology (study of Being), to a poetic philosophical engagement, and an unashamed fascination with the world, painting and their inter-relationship... an opening out into the world and beyond.” His work is shown, published and collected internationally. He has a son, Joseph, and daughter, Anastasia. 2ND June 2015.

LANDSCAPES Small selection of cityscapes and landscapes 2010-2015 Started as a series originally entitled ‘View’ in 2010 whilst resident artist at Red Gallery, London. The series started to come to maturity with the decision to switch to oils and paint from life, in a pivotal moment during an artist residency with Fondazione Morra in Naples, Italy 2012. While The Dark Times and related projects deal with the aesthetics of politics, and the ideological closure of the mediated world, post Naples, I have worked (except for occasional Dark Times and other work made for specific circumstances) almost entirely in the media of oil painting and almost entirely from life. This has led to a large ongoing body of works, landscapes, portraits, still life and other subjects, that function at a more ontological and poetic level: being, time, mortality, place and identity.

THE DARK TIMES 2007-2015 “Sakoilsky as a painter with a philosophical background, and a formidable skill for oratory and writing, does not make artistic statements out of a premeditated or kneejerk avoidance of the concrete struggles that are faced by people around the word today. The artworks are a concrete engagement, which proclaim freedom in the possibility to think a world that is other than the one that we inhabit. Dark humour will be needed: Indeed, to paraphrase Brecht, there will be laughter in the Dark Times, because and in spite of The Dark Times.” DROME Art journal,. MWatson, Rome 2012

First shown in 2007 with the first DT Press Office, a live-in installation and open ended symposium during an art residency at the Climate of Change exhibition, 242 Union St, London, featuring in Art Monthly Feb ‘08. At its heart is an overpainted series of over 700 (mostly free London) daily newspapers. but it also refers to the ‘Gesamtkunstwerk’ of the ‘Editor’, a theme by which it is possible to draw in/on the entire life/work of the artist. The project also takes the form of installation, performance, objects, large scale paintings (Blow Up series), curation, and publication. The Dark Times have been widely written about, internationally shown and collected.
