I believe that Interior Design should not only be about how beautiful a space looks, but the overall effect it has on human beings who occupy the space. Linking interior areas to the outside world by naturalistic and raw materials helps to achieve balance and rhythm throughout. Establishing a deeply rooted design concept helps to form a more ref ined and unif ied design approach. My inspirations as a designer come from the beauty I experience around me during the small, simple moments of everyday life.

“A house is built by wisdom, and it is established by understanding; by knowledge the rooms are f illed

with every precious and beautiful treasure. Proverbs 24:3-4

RESIDENTIAL DESIGN This residential partner project was based in Wayzata, MN. For our clients, Anna and Eric Gustafson, we wanted to achieve an interior with a sense of sophistication, refinement, and elegance. My partner and I decided to create a luxury home with an overall contemporary design concept with some Chinese design influences.

A Moorish culture interior space combined with a Venturi Scott Brown inspired exterior was the basis for this team project during my first semester as an Interior Design student. Extensive research was done on the culture, as well as the architect’s own work. The challenge was combining the two styles into one cohesive space. The final hand-crafted model was a museum space to exhibit Venturi Scott Brown’s greatest achievements. This 3D model was done completely by hand.

INTERNSHIP WORK DENVER, CO

During the summer of 2014 I had an internship opportunity at gkkworks in Denver, CO. While at gkkworks, I primarily worked on their educational projects at CSU Avenir Museum, CU at Boulder, Limon K-12, and Hi-Plains K-12. The included renderings are from Limon K-12 School re-design located in Limon, Colorado.

RETAIL DESIGN ROME, ITALY

During my studio course in Rome, Italy, my partner and I designed a flagship store for a recently graduated Italian fashion designer. Our designer, Alessandra Silvi, designed a collection that was heavily influenced by 90’s grunge. While collaborating with Alessandra, we decided to design an interior that was influenced by a warehouse space. With fluorescent lighting and raw, unfinished materials, we aimed to achieve an interior space with bold and refined edginess. Project 4

HEALTHCARE CHARRETTE SAN DIEGO, CA

While at Iowa State University, I was nominated by faculty and staff members to attend a Healthcare Design Conference and Student Charrette in San Diego, CA. We were a group of graduate and undergraduate students participating in a 48-hour design intensive charrette.

Lobby Perspective Project 5

Our designs were reviewed by industry professionals. The project was a response to the growing demographic of family planning, the emerging medical innovations that foster new demands, and the shifting trend in healthcare toward promoting community wellness. Our site was adjacent to the San Diego Conference Center and right on the California coastline to encourage interaction with land as well as sea. Our building embodies a very organic shape to connect with the surrounding environment, including a green-space roof for client, patient, and staff wellness.

ASSISTED LIVING FACILITY AMES, IA

Self-Developed Company Branding

While designing for the Northcrest Assisted Living facility in Ames, IA, my partner and I aimed to address the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of the user. We not only

wanted to focus on our client’s physical requirements, but transform their dreams into a reality. We tried to personalize spaces, making the facility feel more like a home, as well as addressed any care needs that are to be met. We chose to incorporate Mid Century Modern colors, finishes, and furnishings into our space because this style is recognizable and relatable to the Baby Boomer generation.

Tent-Inspired Study Spots

For this individual project I wanted to create an adventurous learning environment for NEXT University by focusing on my inspiration derived from the outdoors and camping gear. This project was initially introduced by Steelcase and adopted into my studio’s curriculum. Since there are a variety of students at NEXT, creating spaces which encourage Project 9

cross-dimension collaboration was a key aspect of my design approach. The open and dynamic floor plans spur interaction between the faculty members and the students. Utilizing the earth’s natural materials aids in uniting the space to help create an environment that breathes life into the creative mind, while simultaneously increasing productive thoughts.
