April 2, 2013 Christ Church in Transition; Our Journey Begins The transition period at Christ Church began in December when Rev. Stube announced his departure. It will continue until our new rector is called and has begun to feel established in our parish. This time will provide our congregation opportunities for growth and enhanced lay ministry as well as time for self-examination and discernment about our mission and ministry. Currently, the vestry has requested that Canon Matthew Stockard facilitate the search for an interim rector to provide added leadership during the transition. With Canon Stockard’s assistance, we are hopeful that we will be in a position to call an interim rector by June, 2013. The vestry is increasingly excited about the prospect of working with an interim rector to imagine and embrace fresh and new ideas about how we might grow and prosper as a caring community of faith. We continue to be very thankful for the leadership provided by Marquita and Paul. Moving forward, our Christ Church clergy will lead us as we continue our parish ministries in addition to supporting our parish search process, beginning with the formation of a rector search committee. The vestry is committed to communicating regularly with parishioners and welcomes your input as we continue this journey together. Thank you for your prayers and support as we place our trust in God and proceed with care as we call a new rector whose ministry goals are aligned with our parish. Letha Ricks, Senior Warden Thank You, Thank You, Thank You The staff and clergy would like to thank all those people that helped make this Holy season a huge success. We cannot say enough about the team work and dedication of our parish. We thank those persons that helped decorate the church, conducted the Lenten book studies, and participated in the preparation and presentation of the Lenten Chocolate Series on many Sundays. We thank the ECW Chapters for the Lenten Luncheons and the Altar Guild. We are thankful to those that: provided the beautiful music at a variety of worship services, prepared the palms for Palm Sunday and helped make the palm shakers, helped with the Easter Egg Hunt and the Easter Vigil, provided the banners presented to the families of those baptized, held the adult and children’s Stations of the Cross and to all parishioners that attended each service. Christ Church ECW St. Frances’ Chapter St. Frances’ ECW will meet on Thursday, April 4 in the Parish House at 2pm. Ken Rowe, a member of our parish and choir, will speak about Thomas Cranmer (d. 1556) and his contributions to our liturgy and worship style. St. Elizabeth’s Chapter St. Elizabeth’s ECW will meet on Monday, April 8 in the Parish House at 10am. Lynn Harakal, Executive Director of the New Bern Historical Society, will be our speaker. Women’s Bible Study The Women’s Bible Study will begin a new study on 1Corinthians and 2Corinthians with an introduction to the Apostle Paul on Tuesday, April 9. Please join us at 10am in the Women’s Connection Room. Matthew 25LTD ~ Disbanded Matthew 25 was organized in 1994 by the Christ Church Outreach Committee as a non-profit group to meet community needs. Over the years we have been involved with many projects: Merci Clinic, the senior center and mentoring in the middle schools in New Bern. When the schools changed the way student assistance could be provided, we were no longer able to mentor. We also have been involved with a limited number of Burmese refugee children, working along with Rhems Methodist Church in their summer program, to assist the children with language and cultural needs. Since we have not been able to meet our larger goals, the board voted to disband Matthew 25 this past December. The funds left in the account ($800.00) were to be given to Rhems United Methodist Church Burmese Scholarship Fund, to be used for the Burmese children of the church for college. If anyone would like to contribute to this program, contributions should be sent to: Rhems Methodist Church, c/o Helen Dawley, 145 Canebrake Dr., New Bern 28562 The members of Matthew 25 wish to thank Christ Church and its parishioners for all of their support, both financial and spiritual. Special thanks to Ernie Richardson and Ken McCotter for their legal advice and assistance over the years. President, Barbara Odderstol Secretary, Mary Ann Harrison Treasurer, Harriet Milde
