Today’s Anthem The Te Deum (also known as A Song of the Church) is an early Christian hymn of praise. The title is taken from its opening Latin words, Te Deum laudamus, rendered as "Thee, O God, we praise". The text has been set to music by many composers including Haydn, Mozart, Berlioz, Verdi and Bruckner. This morning’s Te Deum in B flat is composed by Charles Villiers Stanford, an Irish composer, music teacher, and conductor. Stanford was educated at the University of Cambridge before studying music in Leipzig and Berlin. Stanford composed his Te Deum for a festival in Leeds in 1898. The general neglect of Stanford's music in the years after his death (1924) did not extend to his ecclesiastical works. Many music critics wrote that it was due to Stanford that settings of the Anglican church services regained their "full place beside the anthem as a worthy object of artistic invention.” Pumpkin Patch We need volunteers to unload pumpkins this coming Saturday, October 5 at 9am. The more volunteers we have the quicker and easier this process will be. Refreshments will be served. Don’t forget to bring your wheelbarrows! Please sign up to work a shift during the patch. Most shifts are only 2 hours long. Sign-up sheets are outside the sanctuary door on Sunday and in the reception area during the week.
