Opportunity: Business & Commercial

Accessman is a big name offering big financial and personal rewards for franchisees Hamilton opportunity appealing After his research, Cam says he was impressed with the head office team, ‘But overriding everything for me was Accessman’s non-negotiable commitment to safety. This is woven into the entire operation from machinery and maintenance to providing training for those who operate the machines. This training ranges from thorough briefings on site or before machinery leaves the yard, to the HIANZ (Hire Industry Association of New Zealand) Silver Card and the internationally-recognised IPAF (International Powered Access Federation) training programme with the option of e-learning. It all adds up and has created a very substantial business offering very real returns to franchisees.’ Accessman has opportunities available around the country, with particular emphasis on the Waikato right now. ‘If I hadn’t committed to Blenheim I’d be keen,’ Cam laughs. ‘I got my NZCE Diploma there and love Hamilton and the Waikato. With so much on-going massive development creating huge demand for Accessman’s equipment, I’d recommend that anyone interested follow up the opportunity.’

ix years working in the UK oil and gas industry as a pilot of an underwater remotely-operated vehicle made Cam Knight very aware that most serious injuries and deaths on oil rigs are falls from heights. ‘Motivated by my mechanical engineering background and the tragic consequences of fatal or disabling falls, I took a real interest in the safety developments of Elevated Working Platforms (EWPs),’ says Cam. ‘After returning to New Zealand, I often talked among the family about the opportunity for an EWP hire business which not only put a priority on using the best available machinery but also enhanced operator safety through training. I hadn’t researched this further when my brother-in-law told me the Accessman franchise in Blenheim was for sale, and the company did just what I’d been talking about. Accessman is my ideal of a highly committed, safety-focused EWP hire business. ‘We’d just moved from Christchurch to Blenheim for our young boys, Oscar and Tom, to have closer contact with their grandparents, so my wife Anna agreed there was no harm in looking.’ The couple looked, liked what they found and bought the franchise.

$1 million plus capital the bottom line Cam’s background came to the fore in evaluating the Accessman business model. ‘When I hit 30 I left the oil and gas industry for a couple of years of world travel before returning home to Hawkes Bay. Not long after arriving back, I was invited to join a Christchurch-based start-up business to develop the world’s first non-magnetic inspection robot for climbing inside stainless steel tanks. What we created became a multi-million dollar success, but when we reached the stage where my sales and services manager role would mean relocating to the Netherlands, I left in October 2019 and we headed to Blenheim. ‘I’m not one to do things by halves and my due diligence was very thorough, as the franchise was a considerable investment that involved buying 60 machines and keeping on staff. Having access to $1 million-plus capital is pretty much the bottom line for an Accessman franchise, whether buying a company-owned operation or starting up from scratch, so we wanted to check it out. We used excellent lawyers and accountants, and I talked to all the current and previous Accessman franchisees as well. One of those franchisees was Christchurch Central’s Corey Baker, who had also been involved in successful business ventures previously. Having joined the franchise in 2018, Corey says he’s loving the substantial financial and personal rewards to the extent he’d consider a second Accessman franchise. franchise.co.nz – PUTTING PEOPLE IN BUSINESS
