Around a staircase Housing tower
Bรกrbara is a young and attractive promoter who collects old sports cars. She owns a plot of 100x50m with an outstanding view to the sea but with a very low development potential. As a matter of fact, the built area can only take up a surface of 250 m2. Ten stories are allowed, which makes her think that she can reach a maximum of 20 dwellings, although she desires at least two different typologies to be designed. As a lover of simplicity, she imposes her wish of working with a single, pure and forthright volume, without breaks or eccentricities.
Designing at a distance: Mutten
A proposal is required for the village of Mutten, in Switzerland, currently a bit bigger than a hamlet with small single-family dwellings. The aim is to provide a new use for the site, revitalising it without forgetting the integration of the proposal in the pre-existing environment, studying possible ways of growth and the before/after ratio. The intervention will include the addition of one or several activities which will attract visitors at a national or international scale. It will also include the needed facilities, without forgetting the dwelling buildings which are considered necessary according to the strategy decided by the students.
Collective dwelling: and cities. Urban planning
The assignment asks for planning a portion of the city from a block and a tower of collective housing. The selected environment shows some urban tension due to its character of border area, where the plot acts as a joint between two urban fabrics of a very different nature and characteristics. Both urban and architectural analysis of the area and its plan are asked, reaching every element which defines urban space and offering a global answer to the problem of reconstructing a fragment of the consolidated city. The design of the block and tower will start afterwards, thinking carefully about different types of connections between dwellings and the nature and qualities of the housing space.
Shipyard: Ceramic materials

Valenciaâ€™s northern market garden
The student is asked to carry out a global analysis of the northern villages next to the last indicator of the growth of the city through rings, which perhaps should be the last one, allowing more rational and environmentally friendly systems to replace it. The villages are settled next to the N340 road: a prior connection between towns close to the seashore. But industrial areas have been settling next to it, joining the uses of main street and heavy transport traffic, which are undoubtedly incompatible. The second stage will focus on the problems of a specific area, i.e. Les Tendes. The crossroads activity brought life to this place at the first moment, but it is choking it now, as it has turned out the crossing of every single exit of every industrial area around, with a large amount of heavy transport traffic.
Highschool in Sagunto
Projects IV is the last Projects Studio before facing the Final Project. At this point, the student should start proving maturity as an architect to be. When an assignment is started, it is quite usual to see students develop their proposals from the functionality of the program without a solid basis of arguments. The design of a learning centre in Sagunto is asked for. The place will be decided by each group after an analysis of the environment. Afterwards each student will choose an architect and after studying his/ her works and methods will face the assignment with the same tools as far as possible, assuring the coherence of the design as a whole..
DESIGNING OVER BUILT AREAS: MATERIALISATION
Designing [between] built areas
A small construction between two architectural elements. Building between the history, between the past, between old cultures which dialogue with the current one. The exercise takes the enthusiastic evaluation of the existing as a starting point , while trusting in its power, interspersing in existing structures, making room for itself. Straightforwardly, touching its matter and nearly being nourished from it. Only one material can be used, which will be located between another that is unique: the walls of the existing architectures. The design should insist in the links between the matter and the idea of the design, proposing an architecture that is created after the choice of a certain material and the research of its technical and poetic possibilities.

Urban planning on Antwerpâ€™s ringroad
The city of Antwerp has appointed 5 different strategic spaces as redevelopment areas for the city. One of these strategic places is the inner cityâ€™s ring road, Through a strategical analysis of the ring road structure students are asked to redefine the spatial qualities and potentials of the New Zurenborg area. By jumping through different scale levels of the city the students ought to formulate a design strategy that is translated into an urban plan for the area. Main concepts of the studio are the relationship between large scale planning and urban and architectural design and the de (re)definition of the relationships between the different elements and characteristics of the areaâ€™s urban tissue (local vs regional vs international, private vs public, places of flowing vs places of staying, etc, etcâ€Ś)
Highschool in Sagunto
The design retakes the work started at Projects IV and develops it to the level required to a Masterâ€™s Final Project. There are no changes on the previous scheme, and many of the initial intentions are kept and powered, although important differences in the articulation of the spaces are introduced. The heavy construction system previously proposed is abandoned for industrialized, lighter systems, more coherent with how the design occupies the place. The syntax of the elements and its connections with the rest of the design and between the different scales of the project, from urban to the technical detail which creates the space of the classroom and the way from one to another, became the essential topic of the design.
