When Compromise Is An Eternity Apart By: Pastor Mark Stroup, Elgin Evangelical Free Church Webster defines compromise as “a settlement of differences by arbitration or by consent reached by mutual concessions.” Certainly compromise has its place in politics and in business but, as it pertains to the gospel, compromise has no place. Certainly Christians agree but, why is the church compromising the gospel? Let’s first examine our post modern era in which we live in, that is best described as a culture that has embraced the humanistic secular view that there are no absolute truths and that all morality is relative. This has created a culture of people driven not by thought or rationale but rather feelings and emotions. Our culture has produced nothing more than a bunch of amoral, individualistic, un-teachable emotional wrecks. This is plain to see. God forbid if anyone is told they are sinning, and that most are headed for hell, after all we don’t want anyone to feel bad about self; poor thing may develop a complex. Oh, how I can hear the humanistic, secular know nothing bozos say, “How insensitive.” I make no apologies, let me repeat, I make no apologies, for as a Christian and as a pastor my concern is not one’s self esteem, one’s feelings or how to make your “little world” better but, the condition of your very soul. The great American theologian Jonathan Edwards said ”Unconverted men walk over the pit of hell on a rotten covering” and yet, the church in its attempt not to “offend” has “compromised” the truth, painting a completely different picture than Edward’s drew. By telling a fallen world only of God’s love, that God’s chief concern is how you feel or getting what you want. The church has “compromised” the truth, by not speaking on sin, hell, God’s wrath; the “rotten covering” has been falsely masked by telling people “we really don’t know what God’s Word says on this matter” or asking people “what does this verse mean to you” or simply avoiding doctrine altogether after all doctrine is divisive. Look at that definition again, “mutual concessions” odd, because there are no “mutual concessions” between sinful man and a Holy God. Our demands are always opposing to His demands. When did God ever “consent” to sin? Where did the compromise begin? The answer: from men, more specific, men not “called” by God but, say they speak on God’s behalf. Scripture tells us to examine ourselves to His Word, and scripture identifies those called by God as “good servants of Christ” “because” they are trained and speak “good doctrine” (1 Tim. 4:6). Examine not just yourself but, the one who claims to be “called” by God to feed you. Does he preach from God’s Word to expose that pit of hell and its rotten covering, or is he telling you a story to distract you from the absolute truth that lies below, in other words, is he afraid to offend? Jesus on many occasions had huge turn outs, but after He spoke they went away, never did He follow after them, changing and compromising, no doubt they were offended. As one “called” I commit to the same, well pastor it doesn’t sound like your thinking “big”. What does that mean? My only concern is with the concessions of God. I am not interested in man’s concessions; they will be met in a pit of hell. Jesus shows us that He never concerned Himself with the concessions of man but, with the concessions of a Holy and Righteous Father. Men truly “called” by God know that His Word, cuts, exposes, literally offends fallen mans’ very nature. Men “called by God” speak nothing less, because men “called by God” cannot speak anything else. Let those who have ears hear.
