Bastrop County Sheriffs shoot in self defense On Wednesday, March 13, 2013 at 4:13 p.m., the Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from a female resident reporting a family disturbance and that the suspect had a firearm. Bastrop County Deputy Sheriffs were dispatched at the same time and arrived on scene at 4:28 p.m. Upon arrival, deputy sheriffs were confronted by a Hispanic male, later identified as Jose Manuel Cantu

(10/15/1934). Mr. Cantu was observed to be in possession of a firearm. The arriving deputy sheriffs made multiple commands to Mr. Cantu to drop the weapon which he disregarded. Mr. Cantu raised the weapon and pointed it toward deputy sheriffs. Fearing for their safety, deputy sheriffs discharged their weapons striking Mr. Cantu. It was later determined that the female caller was identified as the daughter of Mr.

Cantu. Emergency first aid was immediately initiated by deputy sheriffs and continued until the arrival of emergency medical personnel. As of March 14, 2013, Mr. Cantu is still being hospitalized and is in critical condition. The responding officers were Deputy Mark Garcia, age 30. He has been with the Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office since December 1, 2005 and transferred to the law

enforcement division in 2011. The second officer on scene was Investigator Stephen Broderick, age 32. He has been employed with the Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office since March 16, 2008. Both deputies are currently under administrative leave according to agency policy which is standard in these types of incidents. The incident is currently being investigated by the Texas Rangers.

There will be five traditional master plans, with 10 to 15 subdivisions inside each one. Among the unique features will be an area with cattle, which can be incorporated with an education center. There will be three

major phases, all developed concurrently, starting with the river bridge. When will it become a reality? That depends on the market, Landwehr said. “The Austin market looks good,”he said. “Bastrop County looks better, but it’s not ready to handle a property of our size yet.” Coastal Range purchased the property in 2006. “We need to be very sensitive about the timing,” he said. “We hope to turn dirt this year. Homes should be available starting in 2015.”
