RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT – A SALUTE AND FOND FAREWELL TO THE STEPPERS
February starts with a full moon on February 1, followed by Groundhog Day on February 2. The Winter Olympics begin on February 6, and Super Bowl LX takes place on February 8—so February is shaping up to be a busy and exciting month.
There are many special events happening at the Community Center, and I encourage everyone to stop in and take part. February is African-American History Month, and this year marks 100 years since the first celebration of Black History Week in 1926. Resident stories are on display, and the calendar includes several related events, including a fashion show
February 17 is an especially full and meaningful day. It marks the first day of Ramadan, the beginning of the Lunar New Year, and Fat Tuesday, the final day of Carnival. Ramadan is the Muslim month of fasting, prayer, reflection, and community. The Lunar New Year—this year, the Year of the Fire Horse—begins a 15-day celebration centered on family, good fortune, and new beginnings. Fat Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday, which ushers in the seven-week Christian season of Lent, a time focused on prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.
easy—sometimes a simple smile is all it takes—so pass it on.
Valentine's Day falls on a Saturday this year and is part of a three-day weekend, with President's Day observed the following Monday. The Winter Olympics continue through February 22, so be sure to catch some favorite events from the slopes or the ice rink, all taking place in Italy
February is also American Heart Month, a reminder to make your health and heart a priority In addition, it's National Library Lovers Month While our library may be small, it offers a good variety of books to enjoy.
I'll be hoping that “Phil” doesn't see his shadow on February 2 and that winter ends early. I'm looking forward to longer days and warmer weather that make it more inviting to head outside for an evening walk.
Be kind.

Let us all remember that this month is Black History month. Check out our community activities as we celebrate and remember the impact on our culture.
For all of you romantics, do not forget the all-important Valentine's Day, February 14. Make your reservations soon as in Vegas we have a variety of options that fill up quickly. Coinciding is our Lunar New Year celebration. Traditional celebration dates vary from the end of January through February. Our Lunar New Year party will be held on the February 16 this year. Also, on the same day, is the national Presidents Day when we honor the memories and achievements of past Presidents. Ash Wednesday is on the February18 as preparations begin for Easter.
On the lighter side, National Pizza Day is February 9 when we celebrate one of Americas all-time favorite foods. Whether it is a thin crust, Chicago-style, deep dish or anything in between, pizza is an all-time favorite. For all you football fans the Superbowl is on February 8 and, once again, our Raiders will not be playing.
February also starts the budget season with the adoption of the Reserve Study, the Finance Committee (FAC) starts reviewing all income and expense categories. Then a comparison is made between actual and projected budget categories for the current year This comparison is made each month prior to the budget workshop and modified based on actual expenses and incomes. Included in the comparisons are projected insurance increases, administrative expenses, and other adjustments based on trending costs and revenue.
Next, the FAC reviews the Reserve Study recommendations prepared by an independent agency The FAC reviews prior reserve studies and incorporates the latest study results. Included in the study is a recommendation for yearly funding This process continues until the budget for year starting July 2026 – June 2027 is adopted.
Also in February, the Election Committee is finalizing plans for our next Board of Directors election. This year we have four twoyear terms expiring. This is your time to give careful consideration for the direction of Sun City Aliante. Board Candidate Nomination Forms are available on the Sun City Aliante website More information will be in this issue. Board members are all volunteers who willingly give their time, knowledge, and energy to help make Sun City Aliante a premier 55+ community Please consider completing the Board Candidate Nomination form and running for
the Board. If you are elected, you will be amazed at the work your Board does.
With the Holiday season ended are you looking for something else to do? If running for the Board is not for you, I have additional suggestions. Apply to one of our standing committees. As of this writing, there are openings on several committees including
Committee will have seven. Again, please consider helping your community out by volunteering. Volunteers are needed to help host events such as the New Resident Welcome, Shredding event, Inter Club Council meeting, and Advertisers Meet and Greet to name a few. Sun City Aliante can use any, and all volunteers in continuing to make this community exceptional.

JOB SEEKERS CORNER
You're bored with retirement and want to go back to work. You took time off from work to care for a loved one. Your company moved out of the area, and you haven't been able to find compatible work. You were kidnapped by aliens and just returned to this planet. Whatever the reason was, you have a gap in your employment history How do you identify this on your resume and in your LinkedIn profile?
We'll start with what you DON'T want to do. Do not try to hide the gap by indicating you're still working at your last job. The minute a recruiter or hiring manager checks with that company, your entire profile/resume will be flagged as unreliable, and you will be rejected. Second, do not leave your last job (with its last date of employment) as your most current employment history on LinkedIn. Not having a current job listed on LinkedIn will affect your placement in the search list (thanks to an internal sorting algorithm). So how do you do this second item without doing the first?
You do this in LinkedIn, in essence, by creating your own company, your name, Enter in a job title, and explain what it is you were doing during that gap.
There are many ways to describe what you did during that gap, as well as ways to identify the position you held. If you have questions regarding how you might proceed, or would like to know something specific regarding the job search process, you can email your questions to me at gmschall@gmail.com

2026-2027 BOARD ELECTION
As our 55+ community prepares for the upcoming Homeowners Association (HOA) Board of Directors election, we will embrace an important opportunity: modernizing how we vote while ensuring our process remains fair, transparent, and accessible for all residents.
This article outlines our partnership with an electronic voting provider called The Ballot Box, introducing a hybrid voting system that combines secure electronic voting with traditional paper ballots, that will enhance participation and accuracy - but we will only need to hold an election if we have more candidates than open Board seats on the ballot
INTRODUCING ELECTRIC VOTING FOR THE 2026-2027 BOARD ELECTION
Why Consider a New Voting Approach?
Traditionally, HOA elections have relied on paper ballots mailed to residents. While this method is familiar and tangible, it can be timeconsuming to collect, count, and verify - especially in elections with numerous candidates.
Having many candidates is a sign of strong community engagement. It also presents a chance to explore hybrid voting - combining electronic and paper ballots - to make voting easier and more efficient for our neighbors.
How a Hybrid Election Works
1. Electronic Voting with The Ballot Box
• Residents receive secure links or codes to vote online via The Ballot Box.
• The system ensures that each eligible voter votes only once.
2. Paper Ballots Available
• The Ballot Box will mail paper ballots directly to the billing address on file for those residents who prefer to use mail in paper ballots.
• Instructions on how and where to return paper ballots will be clearly included in the ballot package.
3. Combined Tally
• After the voting deadline, The Ballot Box will tally electronic and pa
Committee.
As a resident of Sun City Aliante, your voice and participation are important in shaping decisions that affect both you and our community Now is your opportunity to get involved. Four seats will be open in the upcoming 2026 Board of Directors election. Directors elected will serve a two-year term.
Beginning this month, candidates interested in running for the Board must complete and submit the following materials:
• Board Candidate Nomination Form (complete both sides), and
• Candidate Informational Statement (limited to one single-spaced page).
These forms are included in this issue of The Breeze and are also

Who Is The Ballot Box and What Do They Offer?
The Ballot Box is a voting service that administers elections, securely collects votes, and provides quick results.
• The system is designed so that voters can cast ballots online or mail in a paper ballot.
• It emphasizes voting privacy and security
• Results are tallied efficiently once voting closes.
The Ballot Box will be used to:
• Distribute ballots electronically to residents who prefer to vote online.
• Mail paper ballots to residents who prefer to vote by mail.
• Track participation and help ensure that only eligible voters cast ballots.
• Tally the results of paper and electronic ballots in a safe, efficient manner

The election will be held during the Annual Meeting of Members of the Sun City Aliante Community Association on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, beginning at 8:00 a.m., at 7394 Aliante Parkway, North Las Vegas, NV 89084. Election results will be announced following the conclusion of the vote count.

COUNCILMAN RICHARD CHERCHIO
Hello Friends and Neighbors,
I always appreciate the opportunity to stay connected with our Sun City Aliante residents and to hear what matters most to you. As we move into February, I e n c
advantage of the many educational and community programs happening right here at the Community Center
One event I especially enjoyed was North Las Vegas Police Department Active Assailant Preparedness Presentation on January 22. This important session provided practical safety information directly from our local officers and offered residents the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about preparedness and personal safety These conversations help to keep our community informed, prepared, and connected, and I hope many of you were able to attend.
I was honored to attend a parade, along with many North Las Vegas officials on February 19, 2026 in celebration of Martin Luther King's Birthday This marks 100 years since the first celebration of Black History Week in 1926.
Staying engaged at the local level makes a real difference. Whether it is attending community presentations, participating in neighborhood a
involvement helps strengthen Sun City Aliante and the City of North Las Vegas as a whole.

What are you doing with your sweetheart on Valentine's Day? You do not have to spend a lot of money in an upscale restaurant. Of course, don't forget to write a Valentine's Day c a r d t o t e l l y o u r s i g n i fi c a n t o t h e r h o w important he/she is to you. You can even include one of the Valentine's Day fun facts listed below in your card if your loved one is a trivia fan.
• About 1 billion Valentine's Day cards are exchanged each year
• A red rose is the favorite flower of Venus. For this reason, the red rose is also a symbol of Valentine's Day
• Worldwide 50 million roses are given for Valentine's Day each year
• Over 35 million hearts-shaped boxes of candy will be sold for Valentine's Day
• The average number of wedding proposals on Valentine's Day each year is 220,000.
• At least 9 million people buy their pets a gift on Valentine's Day
• In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names to see who their Valentine would be, and they would wear the name pinned to their sleeve.

• Gutter Cleaning: Clear debris from the gutters to ensued proper water flow; this includes Willow Wren Park and Water Rail.
• Check for pests and diseases: Monitor plants (Desert Daisies) for signs of pests.
• Conduct irrigation audits: Identify any needs in the poly lines or main lines before the warmer months.
• Willow Wren Park: All of the pebble rock was raked, and the mow curb was cleaned up. The leaves at Willow Wren Park were picked up and this was completed the last week of January.
• Thirty plants were replaced under warranty around the rear area of the Community Center. The plants consisted of Barrel Cactus, Desert Daisies and Greenspire Eounymus.

While on patrol, our drivers are on the lookout for suspicious activity. We write down license plate numbers and report the activity to security for escalation. If we see people going door-todoor we contact security to talk to them and advise them that solicitation is prohibited in North Las Vegas without a permit. Some of these people are here legitimately, others are not. But all of them know we are watching. The patrol drivers also are on the lookout for safety issues. For example, contractors are required to put safety cones around materials that they temporarily place in the street. When they fail to do this, we put out temporary cones and contact the owner, so they make the contactor aware of the rules.
We mark irrigation leaks that we see as we drive. This helps the homeowner who may not be aware of a leak.

Residents are always welcome at the Neighborhood Watch meetings. You're invited to join us for the next meeting on February 19 at 4:30 pm in the Social Hall.

community safer by acting as an invaluable set of eyes in our neighborhood. The patrol car, with its lightbar on top, is a visible presence in Sun City to n e i
and delivery drivers. We're also seen by those who may be intent on committing a crime in our neighborhood. Hopefully, the presence of a patrol car gives them pause and they move on. Scammers also try to prey on our neighbors. These people go door-to-door offering services while pretending to have current work in our neighborhoods.
Last year, I saw a dog walking down the street without an owner He was a small dog who had wandered away. I was able to reunite the dog with his thankful owner
All patrol drivers aim to make Sun City a safer, more enjoyable place to live. Some of our members drive alone while others drive with another patrol member. Patrol is a great way to help the community and get to know our neighbors.

HOW HYPERTENSION AND DIABETES CONTRIBUTE TO HEALTH DISPARITIES IN THE AFRICAN AMERICAN COMMUNITY

Editor's Note: This is the first in a series of events celebrating African American History Month under the title “The Gathering.”

American History Month to learn why Diabetes and Hypertension are closely connected and how this relates, in particular, to the African American community
According to the American Diabetes Association and the American Heart Association, thirty-three percent of African Americans with diabetes also have heart disease. In both male and female diabetics, heart disease leading to a heart attack or stroke is the top cause of death. Adults with diabetes are two to four times more likely to die from heart disease than people without diabetes. Diabetes and heart disease also share the same risk factors, including obesity and high blood pressure (hypertension). Dr Talley will also discuss the importance of prevention, diagnosis, health screening and treatment plans.
In addition, Dr. Talley will discuss how African Americans have made significant contributions to U.S. medicine ~ all the while navigating systemic discrimination to improve healthcare access and quality for everyone.

Carter G. Woodson: Architect of African American History Month and Champion of African American Scholarship
H
“Father of African American History”
By Sonja Bankston-Cullen, Adv. DCAL
Woodson, widely
"Father of African
dedicated his life to the meticulous
African American
society In 1915, at a time when the nation marked the 50th anniversary of emancipation, Woodson founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History. This organization, now called the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), became instrumental in challenging prevailing racist misperceptions and advocating for the recognition of black achievements. Woodson's commitment to education led him to create the first Exposition of Negro Progress and to launch the pioneering Journal of African American History, both designed to elevate black history as a vital field of study
Woodson believed that disseminating African American history was essential not only for instilling pride within the African American community but also for counteracting racist arguments about the supposed inferiority of African American accomplishments. His efforts extended beyond academic circles, reaching
Southerners to learn about their civil rights, despite the challenges posed by the South's separate-but-unequal school systems.
Though Woodson passed away in 1950, his influence continued to grow In 1975, President Gerald Ford officially acknowledged African
importance in recognizing black contributions to American culture. The following year, the ASALH expanded the observance to the entire month of February, coinciding with the nation's bicentennial The momentum culminated in 1986 when Congress designated February as
States. Woodson's unwavering dedication to honoring black excellence has left an indelible mark, ensuring that African American history remains an integral part of American identity

A SALUTE AND FOND FAREWELL TO THE AMAZING STEPPERS DANCE TEAM
By Trish Williamson
For the past 20 years, the name Margo Young has been synonymous with The Steppers, Sun City
A l i a n t e ' s L a d i e s o f Dance. You would see them every Tuesday and T h u r s d a y a f t e r n o o n practicing in the Fitness
S t u d i o f o r t h e i r n e x t performance.
The story of The Steppers started in 2006, when Margo organized approximately 20 people to form a home exercise group after recovering from a serious illness. A short time later, a few
p e o p l e d r o p p e d o u t , a n d t h e r e m a i n i n g members all enjoyed dancing.
Then Margo and T h e S t e p p e r s

M a rg o s t a r t e d a d a n c e t r o u p e serving as director, choreographer and dancer.
“Since the beginning, the Sun City Aliante S t e p p e r s m a d e s t e a d y p r o g r e s s t o fi n a l l y developing this dance ensemble into being recognized as one of the premier senior dance groups in Nevada,” said Margo, the Founder of The Steppers. “It has been such a privilege to work with The Steppers dance team and to witness their accomplishments over the years. Yo u d i d n o t h a v e t o b e p r o fi c i e n t o r a professional dancer, Margo noted. “All you needed was a love of dancing and a passion for having fun. Dancing is also a fantastic form of exercise and a great way to meet new people and bring joy to others.”
The Steppers were very active in raising funds for numerous charities. They have performed for the Candlelighters (raising money to fight c h i l d r e n ' s c a n c e r ) M e a l s o n W h e e l s ; t h e Alzheimer's Foundation; and the Jewish War Veterans.
Margo led the way for the Steppers to get involved in the Ms. Senior Nevada Pageant and she was the first Steppers to win the title in 2009 Other Steppers followed her lead Debbi Halfhill was named as a runner up and
Rita Marantz as a finalist for the contest in later years.
The troupe also performed at the Ms. Senior Nevada, Santa Fe Casino; Aliante Casino; Senior Idol; Senior Olympics winning gold medals; and many Sun City Aliante events, such as the Christmas Tree Lighting and the Hanukkah Celebration.
Reflecting over the past 20 years leading the Songsters, Margo said, “I really appreciate the help of Pam Baltz, who served at my right arm a s C h o r e o g r a p h e r, A r
Costume Designer for many years. I also want to give a shout out to Mal Telloian, who was our only male Stepper for so many years.
“It has been a wonderful journey with many great memories. We traveled to many cities in Nevada to perform. I enjoyed every minute and have made many lifetime friends. I had great support and dedication from all the members, because they loved our dancing as much as I did.”
“At one point, our dance team was 25 members strong, and now we are down to four members. In recent years, it's been hard to find people to make the commitment of time and many have heath issues. We are all sad to have to dissolve the group, but it has been a great ride!” Margo said with resignation.
Sun City Aliante salutes Margo Young and the S t e p p e r s f o r t h e i r a m a z i n g t a l e n t , achievements, and generosity We wish them the best as they close this chapter of their Life's Journey, and look forward to seeing all the members of the Steppers in the months ahead at many of Sun City Aliante's fun activities.

MEET RIO, OR SOME MAY CALL ME RIONARDO
Hi, My name is Rio. Some call me Rionardo, partially, because I only eat my vegetables if sprinkled with a little parmesan cheese or olive oil. My heritage is mostly Bull dog and Shih Tzu, but the Italian in me is probably why I love people so much, LOL!
When I was a puppy, a car crossed my path and injured my spine. A nice lady, Betty, rescued me and I lived with her until my 3rd birthday I lived in a cage most of the day, but when Betty came home from work around 5 p.m., she would spend time with me until her bedtime, then back in my cage until the next day at 5 p.m. Then at age 3, and mostly healed up, Betty gave me to my newly-adopted Mom and Dad, Susan and Mike Long. Now my new mom and dad live at my home with me, and I sleep and am free to roam anywhere in my home I want. Why I sleep in a different spot several times a day if I want!
I enjoy tearing open gifts, especially on C h r i s t m a s m o r n i n g , i t d o e s n ' t m a t t e r whose. Or whenever Mr. Amazon comes to my door to see me! The ding-dong of my doorbell says to me, "I am here Rio!" Such excitement every day! And I will never know when I will find a treat for me, put in a bag, and then into a cheerio box, just sitting there, waiting for me to tear into and enjoy! Such fun!
I am now 5 years old and when starting my walk with my mom or dad I feel great. But as the walk continues, I have to stop. I begin to ache and tire, my arthritis and bursitis from my accident you know Luckily, my folks bought a chariot for me which they push along side of me or behind me on a leash.
When I start to ache, or am just ready for a little rest during my walk, I can hop into my chariot and lay down or pretend to be a hood ornament and enjoy the ride home. I really enjoy my walks, Mom or Dad let me decide where I want to venture off to each day, it's my chance to be the boss! Usually I have this freedom until I get tired, then I hop into my chariot and enjoy a scenic ride home! Though I enjoy my walks to meet and greet new people very much, I do love my friends I cross paths with often. There's Ogden, my best buddy, Molly, Dash, Susan, Oreo, Pixie, Oreo 2 and many more.
I love being the leader of the walk with Mom or Dad, especially, as I love coming to a direct stop out of nowhere, zig zagging from rosemary bush to Texas Sage, my favorites! I enjoy stopping short whenever someone opens their garage door. You never know when someone is coming out to see me! Some may think I am “Casing the Joint,” but it is just the friendly Italian in me I think, LOL. I enjoy the fun of a car tooting as it passes us and calling out , "Hi Rio! " Sometimes they even pull over to pet me and talk to me a bit!
You know, nobody is perfect. I dislike it when passing a possible friend and they start barking, nagging I guess. That turns me off and I usually pick up my exercising pace and run to avoid the noise. I get over it, all of us have flaws, why even me!
I am enjoying life in my retirement home, Sun City Aliante, and on my daily walks, I enjoy meeting new friends and having new adventures. So, next time you see me, say "Hi Rio!" You'll make my day, and you'll have a new friend!
Dictated by me and written by my Dad, from my family, Susan and Mike and my loving Grandma Peggy who just passed and I miss greatly Now, I'll say goodbye and thank you for letting me share my story with you. ~ RIO, a.k.a. Dad (Mike Long)

LGBT + SOCIAL
February was named after a Roman purification festival called Februa which means “month of cleansing.” In modern times, it is widely known for love and affection. Did you know that February used to be the last month of the year and was the last month added to the Roman calendar? It marks the end of winter and start of spring. We celebrate Valentine's Day, Black History, and various health/awareness causes such as the American Heart and National Cancer Prevention month. The United Kingdom celebrates the history of the LGBTQ + community, which the United States. celebrates in June. These are only the most well-known observances we celebrate in February, but there are many more, such as the National Canned Food month, Eating Disorder Awareness Month, and National Library Lover's Month.
February encompasses the themes of love, remembrance, cultural awareness and renewal. We hope you enjoy some or all that this month has to offer, especially Valentine's Day Love is Love!
We meet on the second Wednesday of every month at the Community Center Our next meeting is February 11 at 6 p.m. We also have other social activities during the month, and gladly entertain ideas for other activities. If you want more information on our group or activities, please contact Sheryl at 818-517-0610, Tom at 702-885-9658, or email suncityaliantelgbt@gmail.com.

PICKLEBALL CLUB
Greetings and Happy New Year! My name is Mari Jo Boster, and I am the 2026 President of the Pickleball Club. My Vice President is Elaine Frey, my Secretary is Sylvie Courtemarsh, and my Treasurer is Sue Davis. What a team!
How do you know you're a Pickleball addict? You know when you're desperate to play after a rainy night and find the only dry court at SCA is the tennis court. Then you improvise. We played with 8 picklers and named it Tenickle! It was a blast. Of course we made up our own rules without a "kitchen". That's what we do. We work as a team, encourage each other, laugh at ourselves, enjoy the camaraderie and just have fun. We are never too old for that!
Come join us on the courts. Make a new friend, take a lesson, and get some exercise. Lessons change with the seasons; so, check The Breeze for days and times. Currently they are on Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m. You can also check with Sarah Smith at 702-635-4629 or Felton Hyche at 310-613-2148.
See you on the courts!

In addition, if you ever receive a pop up on your computer warning that your data will be deleted and advise you to call the phone number on the screen ~ it is also a fraud! Just shut your computer down. Wait a minute, turn the machine on and see if the issue returns.

TRADE YOU GREEN GRASS FOR GREEN CASH WITH THE WATER SMART LANDSCAPES REBATE PROGRAM
One look at the calendar tells us winter is still chilling in Southern Nevada. But we'll be thawing out soon—and with the impending arrival of spring comes a great opportunity for you to upgrade your thirsty grass landscape to drip-irrigated, water-efficient plants and trees.

Here's the details and dollars:
· SNWA Rebate: Qualifying homeowners get $5 per square foot for the first 10,000 sq. ft. of grass you upgrade, and $2.50 per sq. ft. after that.
· Extra Savings: Las Vegas Valley Water District customers earn an additional $2 per sq. ft., bringing your total rebate to $7 per sq. ft. (up to 10,000 sq. ft.) and $4.50 per sq. ft. thereafter
· H e n d e r s o n B o n u s : S i n g l e - f a m i l y h o m e o w n e r s i n Henderson can score an extra $575 rebate.
· Tree Bonus: SNWA offers $100 for each new tree installed (up to 100% canopy coverage). A list of qualifying trees is available at www.snwa.com.
Why remove your grass? Well, it takes 73 gallons of water each year to irrigate a single square foot of grass; however, each square foot of drip-irrigated landscaping needs only 18 gallons of water per year to stay vibrant and healthy To apply for the WSL program and for tips to help maintain a healthy landscape, visit www.snwa.com.
