MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Hello Residents,

Fall is in full bloom and the early morning crispier air feels so good after a very hot summer Welcome back to our residents who took the summer away from Las Vegas for cooler weather, and now everyone can settle down to another fall and winter in beautiful Sun City Aliante.

You may have noticed that the North Las Vegas Police department has been enforcing the stop sign requirement at Broadwing and Aliante. A number of violators have received a rather hefty fine for failing to come to a full stop, and the police will be setting up additional random dates and times to enforce traffic laws. In conjugation with the stop sign enforcement, I have asked the police to patrol Grand Teton behind Sun City back walls (leading to DR Horton new homes) for speeders especially after dark. As more homes are being built, more cars are on the roads surrounding Sun City, and there are more traffic violations that are beginning to appear Please exercise care while traversing the streets in North Las Vegas.

I can't believe that it will only be several months before you will be asked to participate in electing members to your Board of Directors for 2024-2025. As an advance notice, four (4) seats will be up for election, and you will learn more about the election process as this year winds down. Please spend the time necessary to inform yourself on the qualifications of each candidate as Board members have total influence on the policies and expenditures of your HOA.

I'm eagerly looking forward to the successful conclusion of 2023. Thank you all for continuing to support the policies your Board of Directors implement, in making us a superior place to live while maintaining an entertaining and active lifestyle.

Respectively,

BOD EXECUTIVE SESSION NOTICE

BOARD OF DIRECTORS

INVOLVEMENT IN A COMMON INTEREST COMMUNITY (CIC) 101

When I moved to Nevada after living in Southern California for the majority of my life, I had no working knowledge of a CIC –(Common Interest Community) or any of the other acronyms that I would abruptly be introduced to. I saw my home, I loved my home, I purchased my home… Then reality set in.

Although my realtor was great, a buyer is focused on one thing – “the house they want.” S o , I r e m e m b e r w h e n I r e c e i v e d a l l t h e i n f o r m a t i o n r e g a r d i n g H O A a s s e s s m e n t s , signed an agreement and I began decorating my home. Then a coupon book arrived from two different businesses. I needed to understand where my money was going, how was it used to benefit me, and if I had any input as to how the funds were used. These questions sent me down the dark rabbit hole seeking enlightenment. As I began to try to answer these questions, more questions popped up. I wanted and needed to know what a master planned community is, a subdivision, CCR's, ARC's, Covenants, By-laws… Whew it was mind-blowing. Therefore, being a motivated educator and a believer in active community participation, I began reading and enrolling in Zoom courses (COVID-19 protocol) offered by Nevada Real Estate Department (NRED) Ombudsman's office.

So, for anyone ever wondering exactly what this whole Common Interest Community (CIC) is – here's what I learned thus far A CIC refers to real estate to which a person, through ownership of a unit, is obligated to pay for a share of the real estate taxes, insurance premiums, maintenance, or improvement of and other expenses related to the common elements of the community The Community Center (and all items within it), the Tennis and Pickleball courts and dog parks are a few of the common interest areas within Sun City Aliante. When you purchase property in a CIC, owners agree to pay assessments and are bound by the restrictions on how they can use and enjoy their property regardless if you agree with how the community is managed or the money is spent. Failure to pay assessments may put the owner at risk of losing their home through the foreclosure process.

The members of the Sun City Aliante Board of Directors pictured (l-r) are Sonja Bankston-Cullen, Secretary; Mark Towers, Director; Nancy Prince, Treasurer; Warren Geller, President; Debbie Matthews, Director; Ed Ernest, Director; and Mark Smith, Vice President.

A Master Planned Community has subdivisions. Therefore, the Master Association and the sub-divisions have guidelines and assessments. Sun City Aliante is a subdivision of the Aliante Master Planned Community In our CIC, we pay monthly assessments to the Master Community (Aliante) and quarterly assessments to our Homeowners Association (Sun City Aliante HOA). My trip down the figurative rabbit hole allowed me to understand that as a homeowner in a CIC, I have a voice through the election process for both the Master and Sun City Aliante Homeowners Associations. I can participate in monthly meetings at each level and express my concerns at the appropriate time. I learned that there are Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions (CCR's) that provide the guidelines for allowable and non-allowable practices, behaviors, structural adjustments and additions in our community Not only that, but I learned that there are varied standing committees that exist that any homeowner in our community can serve as a member, when vacancies exist, and/or attend the scheduled meetings.

These committees exist to assist our Board of Directors in making decisions that positively benefit our community.

The Committees in Sun City Aliante are:

• Architectural Review Committee (ARC): - Reviews owner site/home exterior change requests to ensure they comply with community standards of aesthetics and quality

• C o m m u n i c a t i o n C o m m i t t e e : O v e r s e e s t h e w e b s i t e & Committee events and assists the Editor of The Breeze magazine.

• Covenants Committee: Ensures residents are complying with HOA guidelines and other governing documents.

• Election Committee: Oversees the BOD Candidate Election process, including the counting of the ballots and the Finance Committee: Ensures the Association's finances and budgets are secure, and the Association is in compliance with state and federal laws.

• Lifestyle Committee: Assists Lifestyle Director overseeing Chartered Clubs & Special Interest Groups and advises the Board on policies, rules & guidelines for use of Association facilities.

• Patrol Committee: Oversees the Patrol volunteers who observe & report hazards/incidents within the Community to the appropriate authorities.

• Property and Grounds Committee: Oversees the upkeep & maintenance of all Association common areas, including the Community Center

Our Homeowners Association (HOA) contracts with a company, First Service Residential, that provides our community with a manager and support staff to effectively, expertly, and efficiently carry out the day-to-day business of our HOA.

There are so many more nuances that could be shared regarding a CIC, but time and space prevent it. Allow me to close by making an appeal – It is important to be involved in your HOA. If you have never attended a monthly Board meeting, you are welcome to join in. If you desire to participate on one of the standing committees, please attend a scheduled meeting and seek the opportunity when a vacancy occurs. If you have questions and/or concerns share them with Board members and the staff that support our HOA. Attend the Budget workshops and the Annual Homeowners Meeting. Stay informed and become involved in our beautiful active 55+ community.

As I close this article, I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge and commemorate the lives so traumatically taken away on October 1, 2017 and celebrate the resiliency of our great city and community of Las Vegas – We are Vegas Strong! #VegasStrong

Respectfully Submitted,

COMMITTEES – WHY JOIN?

Committees are the backbone of the association. C o m m i t t e e r e p o r t s h e l p t h e B o a r d t o m a k e informed decisions. If committee members are haphazard about their jobs, the whole community suffers.

Most associations have two types of committees; standing and ad hoc. Standing committees perform a continuing function and usually deal with specific a r e a s ( e g , F i n a n c e , G r o u n d s M a i n t e n a n c e , Architecture, or Social Functions). They operate indefinitely, though the members may change.

Ad-hoc committees are created for a specific task – whether to solve a problem or plan a project. A great example is the Ad-Hoc Committee for the Expansion Project of the Community Center from 2018-2019.

Effective committee members are:

1. Interested in the committee. 2. Understand their responsibilities. 3. Willing to spend time on committee tasks. At Sun City Aliante, there are eight committees. Since I came on board in 2017, I have worked with every committee except the Lifestyle Committee and the Communications Committee, but I know most of the members of these two. I can proudly attest that the members of these committees are genuinely committed and desire what is best for the entire community

Currently, we have several openings. I encourage you to visit these committee meetings and see them in action. The only committee meeting that is closed to homeowners is the Covenants Committee. We do not have an opening at this time.

If you want to know about current projects and how they are coming along, come to the Property & Grounds meeting. If you think you have great ideas for social events, then consider joining the Lifestyle Committee. If you like numbers and have a knack for budgeting, the Finance Committee has two openings If you were a former engineer, architect, or construction contractor, then by all means, check out the Architectural Design Committee. Patrol and Communications Committees both have openings as well.

Be a well-informed homeowner; don't rely on social media or your neighbors as your sole highway for information – search for the source and accuracy In 2017, there were so many cottontail rabbits in the community They were flourishing to a point that they invaded homeowners' properties and were eating all the flowers, plants, and shrubs. Then slowly but surely, they started to disappear

A couple of homeowners came to my office and asked me why I exterminated the rabbits. Baffled and shocked, I asked how I could possibly have achieved that. To my amazement, they informed me that they heard “through the grapevine” I rounded up some coyotes to “naturally get rid of them.” Huh?!? What? I could go on with this story, but l won't. Needless to say, I assured the concerned homeowners that I did not execute the rabbits on my own accord. I am pretty sure the City of North Las Vegas had something to do with it. They were after all clearing land to develop more housing and commercial buildings around the community One can logically assume predators were displaced and moved in closer to the community. I don't know – maybe I'm wrong.

If you have questions or concerns, then do your part to participate in the association committees; so, you know what is going on in the community and why certain things are happening or changing. At the very least, read the m i n u t e s p o s t e d o n t h e w e b s i t e , s i g n u p t o g e t e m a i l s f r o m t h e

magazine.

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Hello Residents,

This month I want to focus on health and wellness. Are you doing your utmost to ensure you will enjoy a long, healthy life?

The Flu Season is here, and it's time to ensure you have all the immunizations you need to keep you healthy and safe. It is a proven fact… Flu shots and other immunizations save lives! Remember when your kids started school, and you were required to make sure they had particular shots? There was a reason for that. Various immunizations helped us to achieve great things, such as the eradication of diphtheria, polio, measles, mumps, and chicken pox, to name a few

According to the Medical Director of the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases, the best time to get vaccinated is from mid-September through the month of October That's because the immunity conferred by the Flu shot wanes over time, particularly for older adults. Getting vaccinated too soon could mean losing protections while the flu season is in full swing.

The good news is we have made it easy and convenient for residents to get their vaccinations. We were excited that our Smith's Pharmacy, located on Aliante Pkwy., attended the Home Safety & Health Expo on September 30 and hosted a Vaccination Clinic from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Activity Room of the Community C e n t e r R e s i d e n t s w e r e a b l e t o g e t t h e n e w C O V I D - 1 9 v a c c i n e , p l u s immunizations for the Flu/Influenza (regular and high-dose for age 65+), Pneumonia, Whooping Cough, RSV (for patients 60 and older, especially those with underlying medical conditions) and The Shingles Vaccine.

If you missed the Shot Clinic on September 20, no worries. We have arranged for a second Smith's Pharmacy Shot Clinic on Thursday, October 19 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. This time Smith's Pharmacy will partner with its new parent company, Kroger, to offer a unique, mobile clinic which will be set up in the Community Center parking lot for your convenience from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The traveling clinic will be staffed by our local Smith's pharmacists.

The mobile Vaccination Clinic will offer a wide range of immunizations including: the Regular and High Dose Flu vaccine for people who are age 65+, Pneumonia, RSV Shingles and Tdap (Whooping Cough) and more. If you cannot remember which shots you need, that is not a problem. If you wish, pharmacists can access your shot record and determine which vaccines you need.

Shots will be given on a first-come, first-served basis. Many vaccines are covered under prescription plans, but if a payment is needed, it can be made directly to Smith's Pharmacy. Please remember to bring your insurance card.

I also want to mention October is Breast Cancer Awareness month! This disease affects one out of eight women in the United States every year If your mother, grandmother or other close relative has had any type of cancer, have you had BRAC genetic testing to determine whether you are carrying the cancer gene? This simple blood test could save your life.

According to the Mayo Clinic, more than half of the women in the United States have dense breasts. Usually simple mammograms cannot detect cancer If you are one of those women, advise your physician you want to take advantage of an advanced technique called Molecular Breast Imaging (MBI) which can find the cancer that regular mammograms miss.

Also, are you aware that you could have other types of cancer and have no signs or symptoms until you are in an advanced stage? (Please read the Cancer Awareness article included in this issue for more details.) (Source: National Foundation for Infectious Diseases, CDC)

Happy October and enjoy the delicious foods of the autumn season!

COUNCILMAN WARD 4 RICHARD CHERCHIO

Hello Sun City Residents,

I hope you are enjoying the first few weeks of fall and the welcomed cooler weather! We've been very busy at the City of North Las Vegas, and I am happy to have the opportunity to share with you everything we've been doing.

First, a final reminder to join us at our upcoming 4th Annual Paws in the Park event taking place on October 7 at Aliante Nature Discovery Park. I am happy to share that at the beginning of September, we kicked off Hispanic Heritage Month early at our City Council Meeting by recognizing the business of the month – Juan's Flaming Fajitas! Located in my ward, and as one of my personal favorite restaurants, t h e y c o n t i n u e t o p r o v i d e exceptional customer service and a r e c o m m i t t e d t o p r o v i d i n g culinary excellence for our diverse c o m m u n i t y T h a n k y o u , J u a n ' s Flaming Fajitas, for being a staple in our community!

In other exciting news, the North Las Vegas Police Department held a ceremony to welcome fifteen new police officers to our North Las Vegas family! Congratulations to the Class of 2023-01 from Vegas Valley Police Academy for choosing a career in law enforcement. Your dedication to community safety is truly inspiring, and we are excited to see the positive impact you make in North Las Vegas!

Speaking of our North Las Vegas Police Department, this month at our City Council meeting we recognized our local Olive Garden restaurant for their outstanding support of not only our police officers but our community during a time of tragedy Due to a road rage incident that had occurred, North Las Vegas Police officers and first responders spent hours in the Olive Garden parking lot processing the scene and tending to victims. Olive Garden's manager, Angelica, and her staff invited our investigators inside the restaurant to escape the extreme heat that day and debrief. Without skipping a beat, her team worked together to provide meals for our officers, who had not eaten all day due to the long hours working on the case. Thank you, Olive Garden, for your generosity and support to our North Las Vegas Police officers during the investigation, which helped the case run smoothly and resulted in speedy arrests.

Continuing with public safety related news, the City of North Las Vegas Fire Department recruits have safely returned home from their deployment to assist with the devastating fires in Maui. After a two-week deployment, our brave first responders helped with search and disaster relief efforts in the wake of deadly wildfires. Thank you to our incredible firefighters for your service and dedication to helping those in need.

In case you missed it, the fall watering schedule is now in effect! Make sure to adjust your watering schedule per the Southern Nevada Water Authority guidelines by only watering three days a week and never watering on Sundays. Visit snwa.com for additional information and for watering tips!

So far in the year 2023, our crime rate has been quite low compared to other years and to other Sun City communities in the Las Vegas Valley We still need to be vigilant. When you leave your home, look up and down the street for vehicles that you don't recognize or look out of place.

In recent months, we did h a v e s e v e r a l m a i l b o x e s v a n d a l i z e d P l e a s e remember to take important outgoing mail to the Post Office While our official Post Office is located at 4904 C a m i n o A l N o r t e , L a s Vegas, the Post Office at 6210 N Jones, Las Vegas is closer It is convenient to use the drive up mailbox in the parking lot, but you can use the mail drop inside the Post Office building. There is also a US Mail drop box inside the UPS Store in the Smith's parking lot. If you decide to drop your mail in the mailbox on your street, do so in the morning, shortly before the mail carrier arrives. ONE WAY TO REDUCE YOUR CANCER RISK? BOOST YOUR FIBER!

OCTOBER IS BEST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH - BE PROACTIVE

Breast Cancer Awareness Month, held in October every year, aims to promote screening and prevention of the disease, which affects one in eight women in the United States every year and 2.3 million women worldwide.

Breast cancer starts when healthy cells change and begin to grow out of control and turn into a tumor Tumors can begin in different areas of the breast, like the glands that make breast milk, the ducts that carry milk to the nipple, or other tissue regions.

You already know that fiber is good for improving your digestion. It's one of the reasons your mom was always telling you to eat your veggies.

But did you know that dietary fiber can also boost other areas of your health? Research shows that higher dietary fiber intake can improve cholesterol levels and reduce your risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and colon cancer

How much fiber is enough? As a general rule, women should get between 21 and 25 grams of fiber each day, while men should aim for 30 to 38 grams of daily dietary fiber.

Make progress toward that goal with this advice:

• Read labels. Foods with 2 to 3 grams of fiber per serving are good fiber sources. Foods with 4 or more grams of fiber per serving are even better

• Go whole. Choose breads and cereals with whole wheat or whole grains, like oats, as the top ingredient.

• Bring the beans. Black, kidney, pinto, navy, and other types of beans and lentils are fiber powerhouses. Incorporate them into soups, salads, tortillas, or stir-fry - or as a pairing for grains, like with brown rice or quinoa.

• Mix it in. A tablespoon or two of chia seeds, ground flaxseed or wheat germ added to hot or cold cereal, a salad or baked goods provides a fiber boost.

• Swap them in. Substitute whole grains like brown rice or barley for low-fiber options like white rice or enriched pasta. And if a recipe calls for 1 cup of white flour, you can generally use a halfcup of whole-wheat flour and a half-cup of white flour instead.

• Stock up on fruits, veggies and nuts. Many fruits, vegetables, greens, berries and unsalted nuts are good to great sources of fiber. Fresh is best, but frozen works just as well for some foods, like berries and broccoli. Dried plums, grapes, cherries and other fruits are good options.

• Skip the chips. For a crunchy, satisfying snack, try unsalted popcorn as a whole-grain alternative to processed snacks. If chips are a must, look for whole-grain tortilla chips paired with homemade salsa or a simple avocado dip.

Having a family history of breast cancer, including inherited gene mutations, can increase the risk of developing breast cancer

When it comes to b r e a s t c a n c e r, you have to be p r o a c t i v e , especially if you h a v e d e n s e breasts. You may b e s u r p r i s e d t o learn that simple m a m m o g r a m s may not be able to d e t e c t b r e a s t cancer Learn to know and understand your body.

According to the Mayo Clinic, almost half of all women have dense breast tissue. This can hide cancer during mammograms. Molecular B r e a s t I m a g i n g ( M B I ) u s e s g a m m a c a m e r a s t o fi n d w h a t mammograms miss.

MBI is an advanced technique, but the procedure is simple. A tracing substance is injected into your arm. If any breast cancer exists, it will absorb the tracing substance.

A special camera shows tumors as bright areas.

MBI plus mammogram finds 4 times more breast cancers than mammograms alone. Researchers studied over 2,500 women with dense breast tissue. A total of 66% of breast cancers were missed by mammograms but caught by MBI. Better testing means confidence in results.

Also, you may think you have everything covered with your annual screening - a Pabst smear and mammogram. However, many cancers are silent killers. You may have no signs or symptoms until you have Stage 3 or 4 cancer The best thing to do is to take the initiative, ask for early testing, become well informed about your own body

Ask your gynecologist to give you BRCA genetic testing to find out whether or not you may be at risk for cancer Another simple blood test is the CA 125 which detects Ovarian Cancer These tests will show whether or not you have cancer. Remember, be proactive… the life you save or prolong may be your own!

I ask them, "As you get older, how do you expect to be in a sound physical condition without exercise?" Many have responded, "That's why I'm here to see you."

Of course, our bodies need exercise. But on days when you absolutely can't - or, more likely, just don't want to - hit the gym, here are my top five things to do to stay strong and limber without breaking a sweat.

Vacuum your belly - Instead of doing crunches to build abdominal power, simply suck in your belly, something called "stomach vacuuming." You don't have to lay down on the floor and get dirty because this is an exercise you can do on your feet. Simply stand straight, exhale, suck your belly in and hold for 20 to 30 seconds (or as long as you can.) Do this in reps of 3 to 5. Feel as though you're trying to press your belly button back to your spine. Some people like to hold their breath while doing it, which is fine if you don't feel dizzy This exercise works your transverse abdominis - the muscles that keep your belly flat - in a way that crunches do not.

Clench those glutes - Instead of doing squats and aggravating any knee or hip issues you may have, you can build a stronger, less saggy butt by clenching those butt cheeks. Clenching works the gluteus maximus, gluteus Medius and gluteus minimums - a twerking trifecta. Stand, clench as tight as possible and hold for 30 to 60 seconds. Start with reps of 3 to 5, gradually adding to that over time. As you're working your glutes, clench your abs also. By doing so you will also strengthen your lower back because your glutes and abs help pull your pelvis into a powerful position.

Circle your arms - If shoulder power is your goal, you don't need to press weights to develop it. Extend your arms out to the side and make 10 small forward circles with them. Then make 10 small backward circles. You will probably feel a slight muscle burn after that small amount but try doing three to five sets forward and backward. This will work your deltoids and rotator cuff muscles. Add in larger circles to increase your range of motion. Take the stairs - If you live or work in a building with a staircase, take advantage of it. You may not feel like hiking or jogging, but your quads still need to be worked. It's amazing how walking just a couple flights of stairs can quickly change your perspective about whether you need to exercise your legs. This will help you to develop power and stamina over the long run.

Sit straight up in a chair - In the gym, there are all types of exercises to help promote good posture, like dead lifts, but simply sitting straight up in a chair would help tremendously If you work sitting all day, odds are you're slumping over That puts your spine in an awkward position and leads to back and neck problems. Focus on sitting upright or, if you are able, sit on a stability ball during the day. That will help to keep your back straight up and correct postural problems.

HONOR FLIGHT NETWORK - A PROGRAM HONORING AMERICA'S VETERANS

Resident Ray Wong Shares His Experience with Honor Flight

Sun City Aliante resident Ray Wong recently participated in the Honor Flight Program. “I don't remember how I heard of the Honor Flight, but they were taking WWII and Korean war veterans to Washington D.C. when I applied to the program. I assumed I would have a long wait because I was a Vietnam veteran with a 'W' last name and would be positioned somewhere at the bottom of the 'totem pole.' It took only two years to be called. This Honor Flight is more than well worth the wait time for the journey.”

T h e S o u t h e r n N e v a d a H o n o r F l i g h t F o u n d a t i o n i s a n o n p r o fi t organization founded in June 2013 to honor American Veterans for ALL their sacrifices. Their mission is to bring war veterans to our nation's capital, Washington D.C., and escort them to war memorials which are dedicated to the sacrifices they have made for our freedom. They visit eight war memorials and the Arlington Cemetery observing the laying of the wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier ceremony. There is no cost to veterans.

The Southern Nevada Honor Flight is an affiliate of the National Honor Flight Network, which began in 2005 in Dayton, Ohio. There are now 40 “hubs” around the country They have no paid staff. Their volunteers coordinate fundraising, communication and travel arrangements and meals for the honorees.

“Honor Flight is an impressive program. Our trip was sponsored by America First Credit Union, which hosted our 25 veterans (25) and one guardian per veteran. They came from every corner of America to visit the War memorials of Washington D.C.,” exclaimed Ray. “We crossed paths with two other Honor Flights from Cleveland and Rhode Island, while touring the monuments. It was impressive to witness Veterans of all services displaying comradery in greeting each other with 'high fives' and handshakes as we intersected.”

Ray advises every eligible veteran to apply for this program. “If you are a military War Veteran, I highly encourage you to do this Honor Flight trip to visit the War memorials of Washington D.C. It is a very touching, inspiring and somber experience,” said Ray

They had police escorts and were greeted as VIPs by the public

everywhere they went, including a water salute (airplane wash) by the local Fire Department as their plane taxied from the runway to the terminal at Baltimore Washington (BWI) and Las Angeles airports, Ray said, “My goal on this trip was not to find anyone I knew on the Vietnam wall but found my cousin whom I researched before this trip,” Ray explained. “I wanted to send a photo of his name to his brother and sister, and my high school classmate's relative who was the first Hawaiian killed at the beginning of the Vietnam War.”

Ray has been using a walker while recovering from a heath issue. “When I asked an Honor Flight if I could bring my walker with me, they assured me that they would have a wheelchair for us,” said Ray. “They told me that there is a lot of walking involved when visiting the memorials, and they arranged to have a guardian accompany each veteran during the trip. I am grateful they assigned us a guardian.”

He continued to discuss how much his Guardian helped him. “I wanted to do some walking exercise to recover from stenosis and was using my wheelchair as a stroller walker,” Ray noted. “I had one speed, slow and generated a crowd behind me; then my guardian, Steve, told me to get into the wheelchair to catch up with the normal pacing tour,” he laughingly said. “He caught up with the tour in a hurry by fast-paced walking. Everyone began cheering and applauding as we approached our normal paced Honor Flight.’

According to Ray, “The best way to learn of the Honor Flight is to visit the website HonorFlightSouthernNevada.or g and submit an online application. Someone will contact you for an interview prior to the Honor Flight date. “They told us there is a long wait list he said. “However, they claim that list moves faster than one might think, so that should not discourage anyone from applying. All veterans should have this inspiring experience.”

EXPLORING THE GHOSTLY CHARMS OF TONOPAH AND RHYOLITE

Are you ready for a spine-tingling adventure this October? If you're an active traveler over 55, there's no better way to celebrate the season than by exploring the eerie yet fascinating ghost towns of Tonopah and Rhyolite. These once-thriving communities have been frozen in time, preserving the haunting remnants of their past. So, grab your walking shoes, pack your camera, and embark on a ghostly journey you won't forget!

Tonopah, Nevada: A Silver Lining in the Desert

Our first stop on this eerie adventure is Tonopah, Nevada, a hidden gem in the vast desert landscape. Once a bustling silver mining town in the early 1900s, Tonopah is now a captivating ghost town that beckons explorers with its rich history and eerie ambiance.

Begin your journey with a visit to the Tonopah Historic Mining Park. Here, you'll discover well-preserved mining equipment and can even take a guided tour into a real underground mine. The stories of the miners who toiled beneath the earth will send shivers down your spine.

For those who dare, the Tonopah Cemetery is a must-visit. The graves of miners, pioneers, and even a few outlaws whisper secrets of the past. As the sun sets over the desert, take a haunted walking tour to hear tales of ghostly apparitions and unexplained phenomena. And be sure to spend a night at the historic Mizpah Hotel, rumored to be one of the most haunted hotels in America.

The Mizpah makes a great Mid-Week escape - https://www.themizpahhotel.com/. Tonopah Brewing serves dinner until 10 p.m. with plenty of time left to venture out for a Haunted Walking Tour The menu is a mix of pulled pork, a couple of salads and lots of hearty fare; remember this is an old mining town not a high brow Wine destination! https://www.tonopahbrewing.com/. Another choice, which I have sampled, is the Hometown Pizza open until 9 p.m.; you can eat pizza by the slice at 222 S Main Street, 775-482-9998. Call to confirm hours if going mid-week. Many restaurants due to staffing have odd days that they choose to be closed. The hotel also has a Café for breakfast and a nice dining room open until 9 p.m. for traditional steak and other nightly specials.

The Do It Yourself Haunted Walking Tour covers less than a mile and starts at the Historic Mining Park Gates and ends at the Cemetery https://www.walkntours.com/our-tours/tonopah's-famous-ghosts-haunted-history-tour For more information on Tonopah or to find out when they have local events check their website. https://www.tonopahnevada.com. Tonopah is about a 3 hour drive north of Las Vegas.

Rhyolite: The Ghost Town of Golden Dreams

Next, venture to Rhyolite, just a short drive from Tonopah. This onceprosperous gold mining town in the early 1900s is now a ghostly wonderland of abandoned buildings and surreal art installations. Your first stop should be the Rhyolite Ghost Town, where you can explore the remains of the bank, schoolhouse, and train depot.

Be sure to visit the famous Bottle House, a unique structure constructed entirely from discarded glass bottles. To add a touch of the bizarre to your trip, don't miss the Goldwell Open Air Museum. This outdoor sculpture park showcases strange and surreal artwork, including the iconic "Last Supper" and "Ghost Rider." It's a blend of art, history, and eerie beauty that you won't find anywhere else.

Rhyolite is close to Beatty if you need to spend a night. Places to stay are slim in Beatty NV - The Atomic Inn- local - retro and unique - 350 S First Street- https://atomicinnbeatty.com. The Motel was built to hold individuals working on nuclear and other top secret projects at nearby Nellis and Area 51. Another choice might be The Exchange Club - https://exchangeclubbeattynv.com/ - 119 Main Street, 775-553-2333basic rooms and they offer mini refrigerators in room and swimming pool privileges at another property in town. Remember going to Beatty is a step back in time.

Where to eat - Gemas Café - 101 S 2nd Street, - 775-553-9131 known for their omelets, tacos and authentic Mexican dishes. The other choice might be Smokin' J's BBQ 107 Main Street, 775-553-5160 open until 8 p.m. and they get rave reviews for you guessed it BBQ and all the sides. Rhyolite is about 2 hours from Las Vegas.

As the winds rustle through the empty streets of these ghost towns, you'll find yourself transported to another era. These towns may be abandoned, but their stories live on, waiting to be discovered by intrepid travelers like you. So, gear up for a spooktacular weekend, and prepare to be captivated by the ghostly charms of Tonopah and Rhyolite. Happy ghost hunting!

Hello everyone, we hope you are still enjoying your summer even with the summer monsoon season. At our last Veteran's Club meeting in September, we discussed preparations for the spaghetti dinner, which will be on N o v e m b e r 4 starting at 4 p.m.

The flags went up on September 2 and came down September 16 to c e l e b r a t e L a b o r Day weekend.

For those of you w h o w i s h t o purchase a brick for the Veteran's Club Memorial Monument, please contact Sy Nielson at 702-234-9183. It is a wonderful way to honor those who served and those who are still serving. I hope you all enjoyed the Flag Retirement on September 30. I want to thank the scouts for their service.

I look forward to seeing you at our next meeting on October 17 at 6 p.m. in the Vista Room. I hope you enjoy our milder weather

TULE SPRINGS FOSSIL BEDS BROUGHT TO LIFE THOUGH ART

Art Exhibit Featured at the Centennial Hills Library Through November 30

Did you know we have 2 0 0 , 0 0 0 y e a r s o f g e o l o g i c a l h i s t o r y preserved right in our own backyard? Herds of I c e A g e C o l u m b i a n Mammoth, Dire Wolf, A m e r i c a n L i o n s a n d Bactrian Camels, Saber Tooth Cat, Bison, and I c e A g e H o r s e o n c e roamed the 23,000-acre tract of land called the Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument and some of their remains are buried there.

During the Pleistocene era, or the last Ice Age, the earth's climate changed dramatically, affecting weather patterns and habitats across the globe. Decades of research and investigation have uncovered a compelling and detailed story about change, extinction, and survival at Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument. These stories come to life through paintings by Julius Csotonyi that represent four snapshots in time over the last 100,000 years Discover the science and collaboration behind our understanding of Ice Age Las Vegas and our changing environment in this informative display.

You can view the exhibit at the Centennial Hills Library located at 6711 N. Buffalo Dr., Las Vegas. The library is open Monday-Friday from 10 a.m.- 8 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, call 702-507-6100.
