CELEBRATING 90 YEARS OF SUCCESS The journey of Patton since 1923

CELEBRATING 90 YEARS OF SUCCESS

Congratulatory Message I am delighted to offer my congratulations to past and current staff of Patton Limited for achieving the milestone of your 90th anniversary. It is a great achievement for a New Zealand company to have survived 90 years supplying refrigeration systems for the primary sector and food industries both in NZ and internationally. The beginning of our export sector was shipping refrigerated meat over to the other side of the world. Today, Patton supplies refrigeration systems to the dairy, horticulture, supermarket and food service sectors with the ongoing challenge of distance from markets and demand for safe chilled foods.

Patton is expanding through investment in export markets. Establishing business partnerships both in Thailand and India reflects your commitment to building an international company and will create spillover benefits for the New Zealand economy. Congratulations to all of you. The success of our companies lies in the passion and the quality of the people working within it. I am sure the knowledge and expertise you bring as a result of your experience at Patton will contribute to the success of the company in the future and the next milestone.

Peter Chrisp CEO, NZTE

It is with great pride and pleasure that I write this for the issue of our publication to commemorate the 90th anniversary of Patton Limited. Although this is a great occasion for us at Patton we also enjoy being able to celebrate it with our partners, associates, customers, and suppliers, who have sustained and supported our Company over many years Although Patton initially started in New Zealand, in the last 10 years the group has expanded its operations overseas to double in size. We now have manufacturing facilities in both New Zealand and Thailand, sales and administrative offices in New Zealand, Australia, Thailand and India and representation in other parts of Asia. This expansion has occurred despite a number of factors that are beyond our control – such as the global financial crisis, exchange rate fluctuations and slowdown in economic growth. While Patton is the oldest current name in the New Zealand refrigeration industry we are continuing our tradition of focusing firmly on the future with innovative and customer focused designs for the Patton Group.

Sameer Handa CEO, Patton Group of Companies

Maintaining our tradition of being part of a family has been one of the hallmarks of our success. Staff commitment and loyalty has always been high. I am proud of the longevity of the service of our staff, a few having spent almost all their working life with Patton. Our 90th Birthday celebrations set the pace for the next milestone, a century of Patton. As we move towards that historic event, I extend greetings to every member of the Patton family, including those who perhaps only engage with us occasionally. This is an occasion to commemorate and to applaud the efforts of all who have helped us achieve this great milestone.

Kiwi Ingenuity at Its Best Blessed with breath-taking scenery at every turn, there is no surprise that New Zealand has an enviable horticultural history but when it came to delivering our produce to far-flung destinations, technology wasn’t originally on our side. Frozen meat had been successfully shipped to Europe from Argentina and Australia since the mid 1870s, but the voyage from New Zealand was even longer. In 1882, after a lot of planning and some genuine number-8-wire thinking, the first successful shipment of frozen meat from New Zealand to Britain took place on the sailing ship Dunedin. This voyage from Port Chalmers to London would go on to pave the way for a successful future in the meat and dairy export industry, the cornerstone of our modern-day economy. The Dunedin sailed on 15 February but once entering the tropics, the crew realised the cold air was not circulating effectively. To save his historic cargo, Captain Whitson crawled inside and cut extra air holes into the walls. Overwhelmed by the freezing conditions, Whitson was pulled out by a rope attached to his ankles and resuscitated by his fellow crew. When the Dunedin arrived in London after three months at sea, all but one slab of meat was in perfect condition. It’s this Kiwi ingenuity that inspires New Zealand entrepreneurs to do great things and our very own business founder, George E Patton was no exception.

Inspiration

Like every success story, Patton Refrigeration began with a focused idea and a commitment to hard work. In 1923, George E Patton set up a business, selling refrigeration to Cantabrians! Often seen around town on his bike with tools and a ladder on his shoulder servicing equipment George was tireless in his efforts and building his start-up. GE Patton Ltd soon produced a range of domestic refrigerators and flip-top ice cream cabinets for the rapidly expanding local market and although the weather outside was freezing, business was booming!

Partly thanks to the country’s growing reputation for refrigerated export of quality lamb and dairy products, Patton had made significant strides in the local market and by the mid-thirties, Patton employees were numbering in the forties; quite an achievement for those times. Further growth followed and after many years of hard work and dedication, George Patton passed away and the company was sold. By the mid-seventies the head office had relocated to Auckland and was developing new and exciting ranges of cooling equipment.
