The True Nuts and Bolts of a Startup Business What they don’t tell you about starting Your Business Starting a business can be a challenge and a risk for anyone involved. There are many seminars and business groups that can tell you how start it. Unfortunately most of these groups are in the business of teaching people stuff that may or may not work for you. They are making money on your ignorance at the expense of taking money away from your business. The reality is that there are general rules and some specific stuff to success in business. To be successful in business you need to satisfy 1 or more of 3 main rules. 1. 2. 3.

You need to have a product or service that no one else has. You need to have a product or service that is less expensive that other business selling the same products or services. You need to make the customer feel good about buying from you rather than competitors.

These are the Business main rules to be successful. The other stuff is more social and mental than an actual rule. Obviously you have to have a marketable product or service. This has to be for you, the best product or best service that money can buy. Ask yourself would you buy it, and why would someone buy this from you. Put in the 3 rules that I mentioned earlier and see if your product or service measure up. Sun Tzu wrote a book called (the Art of war) and it tells that to win a battle, planning is paramount. “Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win”. Look at business like a war. Plan the business out fully and plan for success before you start your business. Many fail at this task because they don’t have a clear and concise action plan. You will need to plan for what to do on the first day and beyond. With anything else in life there will be challenges and pitfalls that can hurt you emotionally but you need to get hit and learn from the experience. Stay focused and positive. Whatever you believe, will be a reality so if you think and focus on failure you will be a failure. If you think and focus on success you will be a success. Part of this positive thinking process you can use to create Your Brand. Brand is basically what your company name means to a customer. Put simply, your “brand” is what your prospect thinks of when he or she hears your brand name. When you think Rolex, you think luxury, so when you make your company, think about what a customer will think when your company name is mentioned. By developing your company with this in mind, will give you a sense of pride to what you are doing. Depending what you are selling I would start developing the Brand name, Business logo, letterheads email templates, and website based on the logo. Once the letter head templates made you can use this for company letters and business contracts. This makes your company feel more professional. This can be made with MS word, Paint, Photoshop, or other software that is readily available. If you have this done this can cost you $35 an hour or more.

Now that we have the Brand aspect out of the way, the next steps are the planning stages for your business. Do you need a business license, or federal tax id? If so when you get your Tax ID from the county building then you can open a business account with your brand name and establish a credit line. Now once you get to this point you should look at full company planning. Look at your current job and take notice of how it’s structured from management structure to flow structure and try to model your business after a company that is already established. Take note of processes and failures in your current job chances are that you will have these same issues when you start you own. If you don’t have a job, try to get a job doing what you will be doing for your own . Your knowledge is your investment. The more you do for yourself the better you are since at this point you can’t afford much, this is called Bootstrapping.

If you are doing a lot for yourself, spreadsheets’, flyers, brochures, letterheads, and all of the branding and accounting don’t expect to get much sleep. You may be doing more than 40 hours a week. If your business is product based or technology based where startup capital is needed then you have to get a loan. This can be done at a bank as a loan or pitch to a private investor. The amount you should be asking for should be based on quotes from people and services that you will need for your business startup costs, and 3 to 6 months of running money to give you time to get established. There are companies that charge you to have you meet up with an investor but this can cost a lot of money. This is where planning is fundamental. Very few people will want to invest in an idea; they want to see what you are doing or what you are selling. Looking professional (letter heads, company logos professional website), and having your financial plan (MS Excel workbook with charts and formulas) looking and functioning superbly will make an investor more sure that you are a good risk. Having infinite knowledge in what you are doing will ensure that an investor won’t loose his or her money on you. This may take some time but developing a pitch and a business plan is paramount.

Now at this point hopefully you got you’re funding. This is the exciting part and also where the work begins. Planning fully means that by this point you have an action plan. You have to by this point know what contractors you will be using, know what employees you may be using, have a demographic of potential clients, quotes from advertising agency’s or ad firms that you can use, accounting strategy, (what is a tax write off and what is taxable) and potential vendors for inventory if needed. The rest is up to you at this point.

Remember when I told you to take notice about the ways of how your past job ran? This is where that knowledge and experience comes in. The day to day grind that you and your employees will be doing is now in your hands. For the opening and startup advertising, use social media. It’s not expensive and by using Facebook for Business you can target your advertising to a large multitude of people with the common interest. LinkedIn and google plus, are also platforms to use for basic advertising. This is where your target demographic comes in. Once you know who your clients are, you can use social media to target these people in a low cost ad campaign to get potential customers.

The Gentleman’s EDC What’s in your pocket One of the marks of a gentleman is being prepared for any occasion, whether it being personal , casual or business. In some cases people actually notice these things. I personally try to have the EDC (every day carry) items match what I'm wearing since it makes me look like I pay attention to details in all aspects of my life which can come in handy when looking for a job. I also try to use items which are now not in use in everyday life like a fountain pen or a pocket watch or even a zippo lighter which compliments what I'm wearing at the time. When googling for edc gear you will find all types of stuff from knives , guns, flashlights to multitools, and all of which are mostly utilitarian by nature and in some cases tactical. My approach to EDC is more geared toward function and style. In todays climate, people fear knives and guns which I can understand but if you have the need for carrying a knife it would draw less attention to carry something which looks vintage than tactical and server the

purpose that it was intended for. As far as a gun you can stylize it but its basic function is to create fear and act as a deterrent for ones who threaten your safety and right for self preservation. These upcoming articles will highlight various types and purposes of the modern day EDC for gentleman. This also goes along with the Gentlman EDC you tube channel which will further highlight what and why items are to be used and various styles which can accentuate the type of person you are and wanting to be.

The knife the pen and the lighter

o you may ask what is the importance of these items. First and foremost these items should be in everyone’s pocket because you will use one or more of these items at lease once a day if not week. The lighters I have used not many times but a flashlight I have used more often at work but the lighter I have used at a more casual setting. As stated earlier I try to match these items to complement what I am wearing but I try to maintain the functionality of what I'm carrying.

The Pen Useful for signing receipts, checks or writing down notes. Fountain pen may be a bit more for style but when was the last time you saw someone using one.

The Knife Modern packaging is a bit more nowadays for security reasons so don’t think you are going to use your teeth to open anything. So you will definitely need this if you intend to buy anything at a store FYI.

The lighter This one is more for those who smoke but if an emergency situation comes up you are prepared or if an opportunity comes up for you to try a fresh cigar or you need light or heat you are ready. If there is a woman that you want to swoon and she smokes you can offer her a light. I'm sure you will get points for this move. For more details in a visual form items will be featured on the gentleman's edc YouTube channel so please subscribe.

How to make money using You Tube This site features the ideas of becoming a gentleman from apparel, every day carry, educate, methods to making money and videos from events that happen around the Tampa Bay and St Petersburg area. This was made as a project to see about making money using the YouTube method. This uses monetization to earn money based on subscriptions. The reality is this, you will need thousands of subscribers to turn a profit. To do this the content must be interesting or have plenty of content in a variety of topics to attract multitudes of different potential subscribers. Video gears and video editing software is also a must so up front capital is needed to get started. Now to do this on a budget, a modern cell phone has great video capabilities to accomplish this task. There is a multitude of free software out there for video editing like for instance OBS. This software is surprisingly good if you can find it. Internet to be able to upload to youtube will be needed Now of course a decent pc or mac is the last piece of gear . If you have the time and the content that you are willing to share you can be the next internet video star. Believe it or not if you have a gmail account you technically have a channel. You just need to register and do some validation and your in. I tested and started to make some money but not enough to support myself but I started this as a control group without telling people to subscribe. Now I'm going to include more content and pushing subscriptions. So stay tuned and ill see how much this can make and ill share details on the channel as a video on the GEDC.

The Gentleman’s Every day Canteen (The Flask) The Earliest Flasks The earliest flasks, also called canteens, were made of leather and remained popular through early American history, even used by soldiers in WWII. They were larger than the silver and glass flasks that gained popularity in the early 1800’s

Masonic Flasks When the Masonic Lodges met in local taverns in the early 1800s, they were served food and drinks after meetings, but were responsible for bringing their own liquor. As window glass gained popularity, glass flasks were created as a by-product. These flasks, once cooled, hardened, and removed from their molds, would carry anywhere from a pint to a quart of liquid. Elliptical, or ovate in shape; with flat or convex sides, Masonic flasks rose to a shoulder, or tapered directly into a short neck. This particular design allowed them to fit conveniently and discreetly in a pocket.

Many of the glass houses were run by Masons, or had Masonic employees, due to the high demand of masonry during this period. Thus, a variety of Masonic symbols were often etched into the molds for decoration. As a result of the fire needed for the creation of glass, flask houses frequently burned to the ground. This meant that there were always new designs being created, while older ones were, by necessity, discontinued. Collecting these old glass flasks has become a past time for some, kept not only for their beauty but for their historical value.

Silver Flasks The silver flask also gained popularity during the 1800s. While smiths experimented with various metals, silver and pewter were found to reactive least with the liquids they held. Silver became more popular as it was believed to enhance the properties of alcohol; meanwhile pewter was sometimes contaminated with lead. Silver flasks are prized by collectors for their beauty, resilience, and high quality. They are often placed at a higher value than most other flasks.

Hip flasks began to appear in the form that we recognize today during thecocktail shaker 18th century, and were initially used by members of the gentry. But there have been less compact versions of flasks in use for several centuries. They say that in the Middle Ages, they would cut out the insides of certain fruits, and fill the fruit with liquor.

During the 18th century, women would take pig’s bladders, fill them with gin, and hide them under their petticoats, to smuggle them onto British warships. When prohibition started in America, in the 1920s, the state of Indiana banned the sale of hip flasks and cocktail shakers.

Why Are Hip Flasks Curved? Hip flasks have traditionally been thin, with a curve and size whose shape alludes to the human kidney. The reason for this curve is simple: so that it can easily be pressed against one’s body so that it is better concealed. A curved flask fits better in a front or back pocket as it will press against one’s leg or thigh. Even a flask that is kept in someone’s boot or sock can be pressed against the leg well.
