2014 - 2015
patten free library annual report
More than you’ll ever know
Thank you! What an exciting year we had together at the Library! The Teen Library Council transformed our basement into a Halloween Haunted Insane Asylum, scaring 80 daring visitors and raising over $200 for teen programming. For three weeks during the holiday season our patrons made anonymous donations to pay off $675 in fines and restore borrowing privileges for some of our youth cardholders as part of the first annual Giving Tree event. In May Library supporters headed over to Gelato Fiasco to enjoy a delicious treat served up by Patten Free celebrity scoopers and raised nearly $500 for the Library. We strive to be a hub of intellectual and cultural life in our community. In order to do that, we have to listen to what inspires and intrigues you. Our youth and adult programming reflects these interests with attendance soaring over 10,000 this past year! Recently, when George Mitchell gave a talk on his new book, the community room was standing room only – we had to turn away 20 people at the door! One former Morse High School student drove five hours home from vacation to attend the talk. Events like these remind us of how important our role is. Although the Library is more than just books, we recognize the importance of maintaining a varied selection of items for our patrons to explore. In the last year we added 5,946 new items to our collection in the form of books, DVDs, CDs and audiobooks. And our interlibrary loan program connected patrons to over 26,000 items from 188 different libraries throughout the state. We couldn’t do any of this without the support, generosity, and curiosity of you, our donors and patrons. Together we raised a little over $76,000 for the annual fund for our 2014-2015 fiscal year and thousands more through individual fundraising events. Because of you, we are able to continue to grow and meet the needs of our community. Thank you for being our inspiration and for making the Patten Free your Library.

John Patten Society Generosity has been the hallmark of Bath area citizens for generations. The John Patten Society is the latest embodiment of that spirit. Created by the Board of Trustees in 2003, it honors individuals who have shown exemplary leadership by contributing to the Library’s Endowment Fund. Gifts that qualify an individual for membership include a donation of $5,000 or more, designating the Library in one’s will, or including the Patten Free Library in planned giving. Through such gifts or bequests, each Society member follows the visionary legacy of Capt. John Patten who laid the groundwork for what is today’s Patten Free Library. “...the health of our civilization, the depth of our awareness about the underpinnings of our culture and our concern for the future can all be tested by how well we support our libraries.” ― Carl Sagan
Friends of Patten Free Library Friends of Patten Free Library are concerned citizens who understand the importance of advocacy and support for the excellence of their library. This year Friends came from over 170 households in our community and beyond. Together this volunteer organization raised over $40,000 for PFL. This was raised from hard work at the Annual Heritage Days Book Sale, the Children’s Book Sale held during the National Children’s Book Week, a Holiday raffle, and the library bookstore, which experienced the best year since the Friends opened it down the hill from the Patten Free Library in 2007. Some of the Friends’ funds went to the Teen Writing Contest, Children’s programs, Saturday Club sponsorship, and a Memorial Book Fund in the name of a wonderful active member of the Friends. Come see the library bookstore at 194 Front Street in Bath from Monday- Saturday 10 am – 4 pm. At the bookstore you can donate books, find gently used books, CD’s, puzzles and enjoy a great relaxing place to browse. The Friends donates books to other organizations such as the Salvation Army, and the Bath Food Bank for their children’s Book Cart. The Friends’ Annual Meeting is Monday October 5th at 7 pm and is open to the public. Renowned author with Midcoast Maine roots, Sigrid MacRae, will be the speaker about her book A WORLD ELSEWHERE – An American Woman in Wartime Germany, published 2014.
