Foreigner house registration update Contrary to popular belief, foreigners can be named on the Tabien Bahn, or house registration book. In fact, there are two colours, the blue one for Thai nationals and the yellow for aliens residing at that address. The blue document is very useful for Thais as it is used for all official notifications requiring proof of address, voter registration, military draft, etc. But what is the point of foreigners applying for inclusion in the yellow book? The process is certainly not compulsory so there is no need if you don’t mind queuing at embassies and the Immigration Bureau to obtain proof of who you are and where you live for various bureaucratic procedures, or that your official documents are genuine. The yellow book avoids the need for these various bureaucracies and the only criterion is that you live

City Hall deals with all house registrations at the address in question. Another perk of the yellow book is that the foreigner receives a special ID card with an identification number accepted for all official purposes. There is no single list

of required documents to make an application as the process varies somewhat from area to area. Here, in greater Pattaya, the latest regulations now in force are exhaustive probably because there is a large proportion of

foreigners residing for most or all of the year. First of all, you need a one-year visa and a certificate of residence from the Immigration Bureau. There is also a need for two face photos, one inch square, Continued on page 4

and two Thai witnesses with their personal ID card and blue book. After that the process becomes more complex in the most recent regulations. Your passport needs to be guaranteed by the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs which recently announced that it needs to see first an embassy stamp of

confirmation. In most cases, this will require a special trip to the relevant embassy in Bangkok. The passport also needs to be translated by a member of the Institute of Translators also found in the Ministry. Translations completed by ordinary translation companies will likely be rejected on technical grounds. Another recent change concerns the need to provide your birth certificate, again officially confirmed through the process known as legalization. This process can be convoluted. For example, the British embassy in Bangkok cannot legalize a birth certificate and will refer you to the Legalization Office in Milton Keynes, UK.

The document must then be separately legalized by taking it to the Thai embassy in London, personally or by courier, for the next stage of the process. Finally, the document must be collected and then needs to be stamped and signed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bangkok. Mövenpick Hotels and Resorts unveils fresh, new logo

New visual identity inspired by upscale hospitality brand’s heritage and contemporary Swiss values The international Swiss hospitality company Mövenpick Hotels and Resorts has unveiled its new logo and corporate identity. Drawing inspiration from the legend of the brand’s origin, the clean, contemporary new visual identity also reflects the warmth, self-assurance and characteristic ‘Swissness’ that shines through the forward-looking

company’s properties, and staff, across the globe. Since its inception in 1948 with the opening of its first restaurant in Zurich, the Mövenpick brand has expanded to encompass wine, fine foods, and a hotel business which has blossomed to become the largest member of the Mövenpick family. With the Mövenpick Hotels and

Resorts portfolio flourishing, the time was right to refresh the brand identity in order to reflect the quality, relaxed confidence and amiable efficiency of today’s Mövenpick. London’s strategic brand design agency Bulletproof was briefed to create the new visual identity, and went back to Mövenpick’s roots for inspiration. Legend has it that the founder, Ueli Prager, named his company after the simple, elegant yet efficient movements of a seagull – or “Möwe” in German, and a bird form has been a constant in the brand’s logo ever since. Bulletproof reimagined this element, imbuing it with “new depth and movement to let it soar over a cleaner, more modern word marque within a contemporary suite of Mövenpick corporate colours.” Bullet proof notes that “The power of the bird icon continues

an extraordinary, human touch of personal detail. Reflecting this philosophy, Mövenpick will adopt a new photographic approach focused on capturing candid, natural moments of wonder that hotel teams create for guests. Nick Bosworth, VP brand and marketing, Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts said: “Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts is deeply proud of its Swiss heritage. But in a world that’s becoming ever more global – and with our own international footprint of hotels growing each year – we needed a corporate identity that would connect at a deeper level with consumers in every market. Bulletproof understood our global challenge implicitly, creating a corporate identity that makes the brand relevant to the modern, global consumer while staying true to our Swiss soul, and flooding our communications with the life and vibrant colour that only global travel can bring.”

Visa and TAT launch festive campaign with great rewards for tourists

2017 Global Duty of Care Awards now open for submissions The International SOS Foundation launched the annual 2017 Global Duty of Care Awards, recognising organisations and individuals who drive excellence in the mitigation of travel, health and security risk and contribute to effectively protecting workers overseas. Following the success of the inaugural awards in 2016, which attracted applications from organisations around the world, the awards have been expanded for 2017 with the addition of four new categories and once again are adjudicated by a prestigious judging panel. The global call for submissions is now open to all organisations, institutions and non-governmental organisations. The 2017 Global Duty of Care Awards will be presented in

Bold secondary colours offset the new Mövenpick corporate red, bringing life to the brand and adding vibrancy and variety to hotel brochures and communications.” A new service philosophy, We Make Moments, will also come increasingly to the fore, bringing together the brand vision, values and core behaviours to create memorable moments for guests. These moments might be in the form of recognizable Mövenpick brand signatures like Chocolate Hour – interactive popups offering a quintessentially Swiss chocolate experience, whether in hotel lobbies each day or even ‘on the road’ at industry events! Equally, they might be ad hoc, intuitive individual gestures that elevate apparently effortless ‘ordinary’ efficiency with

nine categories. Winners will be announced at the awards gala dinner and summit on June 29, 2017, Thursday, at the Maritim Pro Arte Hotel, Berlin, Germany. Organisations and individuals may download the nomination form at www.dutyofcareawards.com. Entries may be submitted via email at info@internationalsosfoundation. org. The awards entry period closes on March 10, 2017, Friday. The awards shortlist announcement will be on April 10, 2017, Monday.

News Disruptive new booking engine gives hotels and travellers a unique combination of real value and ethical hospitality

A revolutionar y ne w hotel booking engine named Traveliko officially opened its extranet and started onboarding hotels last month. The platform is specifically designed to promote fair, ethical, value-added travel while helping make the world a better place. The concept was developed by a group of travel industry veterans concerned by the increasingly unbalanced commercial landscape in the global hospitality and travel industry. They decided innovative measures were urgently needed to re-balance travel business ethics, to give back pricing control to hotels and to set a code of honour benchmark for online hotel and hospitality services. “Traveliko challenges the status quo by offering an alternative to the current OTA systems which often see hotel operators crippled by high commissions and pressured to lower their room rates in order to guarantee exposure on a handful of dominant travel websites,” says Yann Gouriou, the company’s co-founder, an ex-hotel general manager and CEO of Unicorn Hotels and Resorts, a hotel management company based in Bangkok. “Traveliko not only promises the best available rate every time guests book a room online, it only takes a flat 10 percent commission which is significantly lower than the OTAs currently dominating the market. Traveliko also donates 20 percent of the net commission earned to projectoriented charities selected by guests in the country where the hotel is located.” Ahead of its official launch to consumers in Q1, 2017, Traveliko has already signed up several international hospitality companies, including Absolute Hotel Services, Centara Hotels and Resorts, Red Planet as well a number of smaller chains and independent hotels in Thailand, Sri Lanka and the

Maldives. “Because of Traveliko’s fixed low commission, the booking engine has also been optimised for selling additional hotel products that hoteliers would not want to sell anywhere else. At the end of the day, it will give customers more options and an overall better experience. The booking engine was built from the ground up with a focus on offering a custom tailored hotel room booking experience. It’s mobile friendly and easy to use.” says Bjorn Harvold, chief technical officer. Rather than being driven solely by the bottom line, the business is based on a partnership model that aims to save hotels money on commission and focus on giving their customers a better experience. Natalie Glebova, Traveliko’s brand ambassador and former Miss Universe, says “If existing OTA’s were giving back 20 percent of their commissions to worthy causes the travel industry could make an enormous difference in terms of helping people, animals and the planet.” “We are serious about changing the online booking industry and we have spent a long time building a new standalone OTA from scratch. We are personally contracting all the hotels on the platform ourselves. It’s something that’s not being done anymore because white labeling seems to be the name of the game. The problem is that white labeling doesn’t offer anything new, which is why we are very excited about the features and opportunities we can offer hoteliers and travellers, and even more excited that we will be launching the site to consumers in the next couple of months so we get to hear what they think about it,” added Gouriou. Hotels looking to join Traveliko simply visit https:// hotelier.traveliko.com.

Our Community Anyone for tennis Tennis has long been a popular sport here in the Kingdom of Thailand, made more so in 2003 when home grown talent Paradorn Srichaphan reached a career high at number nine on the world rankings. Compatriot Tamarine Tanasugarn may not have reached the same rankings as her male counterpart, but for more that 20 years, until her retirement in June 2016, she became a household name and a sporting superstar here in Thailand. In 2012, the Thai Tennis Lovers was set up by Belgian national and long time resident in Thailand, Mark Kolenberg, to not only encourage more people to play tennis, but also to offer its members advice on improving their game, nutrition and fitness. In 2016, the organisation changed its name to the International Tennis Lovers, ITL, and currently there are more than 700 members worldwide, many who are Thai, or live in Thailand or have an association with the country.

by Derek Franklin

In early December the First ITL International Tennis Championship took place at the Melita Tennis Club, located at Na Jomtien Soi 27. The three-day mixed doubles tournament saw 64 players from 20 countries competing for the winner’s trophy, which was won by alumni from Thammasat University, Nattapat Anusithajul and his female partner Punjaporn Ditthin But not only do the members of ITL play tennis, they also raise funds and goods to donate to the Father Ray Foundation, Pattaya’s largest charitable organisation, today taking care of and educating more than 850 underprivileged children and students with disabilities. The ITL is open to players of any level, any age, gender and ability, you don’t have to be a future Grand Slam champion to join, you just have to enjoy playing the game. As part of the group’s end of year activities, Aleenta Phuket Resort & Spa hosted a glamorous “Into the Blue” Pure Blue Foundation fundraising event on December 26 by the soft sands of Natai beach. The evening included delicious food and live entertainment by Air

Grand Hyatt Luxury, Towering Taipei 101 and Stinky Tofu plastic bags,” says Madame. I notice the smooth traffic, good lane discipline. No old diesel pick-up trucks, only small family sedans and compact SUVs. Mostly new cars by John K. Lindgren including luxury Beemers, Mercs, Range Rovers and Jags. Japanese motorbikes are missing from the streets. But Taiwan made scooters everywhere and roomy, canary yellow Toyota taxi vans. Living the Grand Hyatt Taipei Life Grand Hyatt Taipei one of the very best luxury hotels in Asia. This monumental 500-room property sits in the middle of the commercial and convention epicenter of Taipei city, only a two minutes’ walk from the now iconic, towering Taipei 101, the world’s 5th tallest skyscraper. The hotel's entrance driveway is palatial and matches the white marble ground floor lobby cum atrium with a feng shui fountain, massive high pillars, spiraling crystal chandeliers and a mega size bouquet of aromatic snow-white lilies. Here we are welcomed the ever so helpful Marketing Communications Manager Paul Ou. Check-in procedure is swift and courteous. Tired and bored of always waiting for the lifts (elevators)? Not here! Brand new cars and they arrive almost instantly. Our Grand Club Premier King guest room greets us with sophisticated touch of Chinese and western decor elements 50 square meters of deluxe living space with a separate bedroom area featuring a king size bed with cozy duvet and plush feather pillows. From the windows a vista of Taipei and the surrounding green mountains. On the bedside table a small square vintage analog Seiko alarm clock. Anice touch in this uber digitalized-optimized-touchscreen world. Infotainment: two 47-inch flat screen HD televisionsand high-speed Wi-Fi. The large bathroom in grey marble tiles boasts a big tub plus a separate walk-in high-pressure rainforest shower cubicle (with a seat). On the shelf a collection of delicious smelling June Jacobs bathroom amenities. Taiwan Gastronomy Time for dinner: Yun Jin Chinese restaurant on the 2nd floor. The vibrant colors and oriental design create a rich and elegant ambiance with comfortable seating and impeccable service. The gastronomy; a wide range of delectable Sichuan, Taipei 101

Hunan, Shanghai, Hangzhou and Taiwan specialities. The menu and wine list provides excellent value for money compared to high-end Bangkok Chinese restaurants. We decide for a Crispy long tail anchovy for starters. Anchovy a la Chinoise – simply delicious. The main course Spicy cooked Taiwanese beef, bean sprout and Sichuan peppercorn. Served in a big red bowl. More than enough for two persons. The melt-in-the-mouth premium beef accompanied by all the good spices. Thumbs up! From the wine list a Masi Agricola Bonacosta Valpolicella Classico 2014. One of the tough guy author Ernest Hemingway's preferred Italian wines. Cheers! In Taiwan there's no government tax only a 10 percent service charge. Then comes the dessert: Sesame taro rolls. Coated sesame seeds and thin crusty outer layer. Inside soft yummy filling. Compliments to Yun Jin's head chef Ben Hsieh and the kitchen and service team. What is a stay in a5-star hotel without a spa treatment? It's like Champagne sans bubbles. Grand Hyatt Taipei’s Oasis Spa is a rejuvenation for body, mind and spirit. Our recommendation the Sugar Body Scrub and Polish. This must be the remedy, par excellence for those jet-lagged travelers arriving across the Pacific from LAX or SFO. Our stay includes access to the 22nd floor swank Grand Club Lounge with all-day gourmet coffee, premium tea and mouthwatering, evening cocktails and canapés. And, of course the daily Asian and Western breakfast buffet. One of our favorites: the freshly pressed 100 percent carrot juice accompanied by crispy Taiwanese bacon and omelette with a half a liter of freshly brewed Italian Illy coffee. The lounge guests are a mix of Asian and Caucasian, business and pleasure or “BLEISURE” as the affable, tall General Manager Sammy Carolus puts it. Khun Sammy a veteran Grand Hyatt hotelier. Previously with Grand Hyatt Bali, Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok and before Taiwan at the helm of the Hyatt Regency Hua Hin. The Taipei night markets are a not-to-be-missed experience for every visitor. We chose Tonghua market. Walking distance from Grand Hyatt Taipei. This is a pedestrian, bicycle friendly and safe city. Temperature a pleasant circa 25 degrees Celsius. Arriving from the main street you can't miss the illuminated entrance to Tonghua market. Step right in and immerse yourself in the vibrant busy bazaar with more than 100 vendors offering a bewildering array of foods, clothes, Taipei 101 Observatory

For the foodies, gourmands a must-try is garlicky noodles with black vinegar and chili oil washed down with the Taipei iconic bubble tea i.e. sweetened milk tea chewy tapioca balls. Then the "Stinky Tofu", the legendary fermented speciality that actually tastes much better than it smells. In Thailand we have (some say rotten smelling) durian in Taiwan Stinky Tofu. Both “specialities” should be tried on your exotic food list. Taipei 101 – 508 meters Last day of our sojourn. The super-skyscraper Taipei 101. Number of floors. 101, of course. Height: 508 meters. Gross weight: 700,000 metric tonnes. With an architectural design similar to that of a growing bamboo stalk Taipei 101 is a superstructure that incorporates many traditional design themes. For example, the dragon-like symbols which are incorporated on the corners of the building to ward off negative energy. Beginning at ground level, you can

enjoy five floors of international exclusive designer brand window shopping. But, not to be missed is the basement offering inexpensive lively food courts and a gourmet supermarket. The 5th floor. Let's embark the elevator, a record-breaking high-speed pressurized lift which will shoot up to the 89th floor. Acceleration 7.9 meters per second! The observation decks on the 89th and 91st floors boast stunning, sweeping views in every compass direction. While at the top, take a good look at the massive steel pendulum hanging in the center; the world’s largest and heaviest tuned mass damper which stabilizes the tower against big lateral movements from tropical typhoons and earthquakes. Tempus fugit. Time for DEP in four hours China Airlines (CI) late evening flight to Bangkok. Back to the airport in the BMW 7 Series.

All this is just a Taiwan appetizer, an introduction. We'll be back! There’s plenty more to see, to do and so much exciting food to taste in Taipei. Not to mention the rest of this enchanting island once a Portuguese colony Ilha Formosa, "Beautiful Island". A new must go Asian destination offering value for money and most of all Taiwan's welcoming acceptance for all visitors. “TIME for Taiwan,” says Khun John and Madame Bunnag-Lindgren. GARDEN CAFE @ AVANI PATTAYA RESORT & SPA Offers both urban entertainment and idyllic tranquility in one of the most beautiful locations in the area >> from L1 7:30 to 10 pm is only B.650 net. We chose to start with a salad, crisp and vibrant as only hydroponic can be. We followed this with BBQ prawns, big, tender and juicy with those essential charred spots that bring out the sweetness and flavour. The buffet was packed with Thai salads, traditional curries such as chicken in coconut milk and massaman or fish red curries plus loads of mixed vegetables. Also presented are many varieties of rice dishes, a popular noodle station serving stir-fried soba noodles with a choice of chicken, prawn or vegetables plus an ocean of polar fresh seafood, BBQ fish and Chinese red pork. Then, of course there’s the dessert table laden with beautifully crafted confections and pastries. Our main courses were served from the extensive a la carte menu. Chef had chosen two fish dishes for us, grilled butterfish with miso sauce and sea bass with masala sauce (B.390). The passion fruit masala was a delightful accompaniment to the pan-fried fish and the butterfish, lightly grilled, was complemented with subtly steamed vegetables and an interesting riceberry rice. This is a new variety of rice that has been bred in Thailand; it’s a gorgeous dark reddy brown colour and

packed with nutrition. These dishes are available under the heading “Honest Food” where the ingredients speak for themselves their quality and freshness shining through. Pumpkin risotto with asparagus, truffle paste and walnuts is an interesting option plus oven-baked chicken breast served with grilled asparagus, potatoes and sun-dried tomato tapenade (B.350) also appear

under this headline. Grilled items include an array of fish (Norwegian salmon), premium steaks, Australian Angus ribeye, tenderloin and T-bone with a choice of New Zealand lamb cutlets and organic pork cutlets. The Thai menu comes highly recommended with many atypical dishes such as Thod Mun Sam Sahai, a mousse with fried shrimp, crab and pork served with kaffir lime leaves and chilli paste with a portion of plum sauce on the side. Next time, we’re definitely going to plump for this starter. Spicy papaya salad is there, naturally, as is a larb with either chicken or pork. There’s also a trio of “local” curries such as clear soup with minced pork, tofu, spring onion and celery, spicy river prawn curry flavoured with chilli, lemongrass and lime, or Tom Kha Gai (chicken curry with galangal, lemongrass and coconut milk) and that’s just the appetizers.

Grilled butterfish with miso sauce

The heartier offerings present a deluxe Phuket lobster wok-fried with onion, celery and yellow curry powder, massaman curry served with a fusion twist of mashed potatoes and wok-fried asparagus with black mushrooms. To round off a perfect meal why not treat yourself to a duet of chocolate enhanced with raspberry coulis, tiramisu, or sweet mango and sticky rice. Most desserts are only B.170 net and the informative menu tells you whether the dish contains nuts, is spicy or suitable for vegetarians.

VERANDA RESORT PATTAYA

Hosts a Wine Tasting Experience Showcasing Wines from the New and Old Worlds

Hotel designer and developer Veranda Resort Group has planted its flag on a new location situated on Na Jomtien Beach. The development is a hotel and condominium project with the condo scheduled for completion in the New Year. Lines are clean and the décor contemporary with masses of sea-inspired details. There is recycled wood on the reception ceiling designed to imitate the form of ocean waves, and many water features that run alongside the hotel’s attractive walkways. Mick and I were visiting to join the other wine lovers at the hotel’s “Wine Tasting Experience”. The event was held on the penthouse floor with jaw-dropping views out over Na Jomtien’s beach and bay. There’s also a stunning walkway out over the sea with transparent walls for a complete (if a little scary) walk over the sea with full vision left and right of the beautiful bay. A flute of Jacob’s Creek Sparkling Trilogy was the first pour of the evening which we enjoyed with a kiss from the ocean in the form of the famous Fine de Claire oysters. These tasty mollusks are finished in knee-deep Claire (a rectangular salt pond) for a minimum of one month which fattens them up and gives

them a sweeter taste. These were delicious and with a sip or three of the sparkling it was a perfect prelude

to the tastes to come. A Brancott Estate Sauvignon Blanc was the next pour, soft yet lively and crisp, it is the ideal match with prawns or salmon. This is an extremely popular Kiwi “Savvy” and the 2015 vintage won Silver Outstanding at the International Wine Challenge 2015. Marinated salmon gravlax and seafood cocktails made model companions for this well liked wine. Next up was a Campo Viejo Tempranillo which was paired with mini skewers of grilled tuna Nicoise salad and the best cheese board and selection of cold cuts we had enjoyed for a while. Big bold flavours from this 100 percent Tempranillo from one of the best known Rioja houses and it made very good friends indeed with the maple glazed BBQ ham at the carving station. Another Brancott Estate wine,

this time South Island Pinot Noir. Mini beef burgers and a roasted lamb and goat’s cheese tower were the selected dishes to complement this excellent wine. The final pour of the evening came from a full-bodied and smooth Campo Viejo Reserva served with a soft, tender beef tartar and a smoked duck salad that was moist and flavourful. All through the tastings, the pasta station was creating a trio of pastas smothered with classic tomato sauce plus, of course, Bolognese, pesto or cream sauce together with a choice of ham, mushrooms, roasted garlic, chilli, bell peppers and generous amounts of

Spa Time at AVANI Pattaya Resort Feels Refreshingly Different Contemporary, pure and relaxed, AVANISPA is a place to leave life’s complications behind and enjoy the beauty of simplicity. Minimalistic style is designed to stimulate the senses. Spa facilities blend function with aesthetic appeal with five double treatment rooms and two pool pavilions where natural elements and the refreshing outdoors combine effortlessly with holistic body massages and skin treatments. A straightforward, flexible and individual approach reflects AVANI’s passion for the details that matter. Instead of booking a specific treatment, guests reserve a slot of time. The spa journey begins with a consultation to identify problematic body zones. A treatment is then chosen from one of these four results-driven options; Boost, Balance, Calm and Purify. Then it’s time to relax while an AVANISPA therapist customises a treatment just for you, from the ideal aroma, music and lighting, to the refreshments and pre- or posttreatment rituals. Spa guests get to tune out the world while enjoying treatments that combine AVANISPA’s expert touch with leading spa products. A revitalising Boost is the perfect tonic for low energy, a weak body and tired mind. Following a pretreatment body tapping ritual, specialist therapies recharge, rejuvenate and stimulate. For instance the Refresh Smoothie body scrub of botanical extracts is loaded with antioxidants. Massages give an Energy Rush with Thai techniques, and make a Deep Impact by working

into sports muscles. A reviving ritual to reawaken is followed by a zesty cup of orange and ginger tea. Creating Balance does a world of good if a person’s emotions bounce from high to low or they feel out of synch. To get back into a natural flow, Balance therapies ground the body, mind and mood. Treatments include a Fresh Factor body scrub infused with ruby crystals and organic flowers, and an Herbal Harmony body massage using a heated herbal compress to warm and relax muscles, followed by a soothing massage with a harmonising essential oil blend. To reawaken, gentle stretching techniques reground the body. Overworked, overwhelmed and stressed out can make it difficult to relax and get a good night’s sleep. Calm experiences melt muscle tension, settle nerves and quiet busy

thoughts. Yoga breathing before the spa treatment eases guests into peace and stillness. Calming therapies include the Gentle Rhythms massage using soothing aromatic oil and flowing techniques to de-stress. For a serene glow, the Feeling Smooth body scrub combines jade crystal, organic jasmine and aloe vera to rehydrate and comfort sensitive skin. A post-treatment brew of warm herbal tea offers a relaxing ending. Environmental toxins, a poor diet and indulgent lifestyle all take their toll. With specialist techniques and products to detox the body and deep cleanse skin, the search for purity comes with a touch of heavenly pampering. Purify treatments kickstart the body’s natural cleansing and detox process. A Radiant Reflection removes impurities and dead skin in a body polish of Thai herbs, charcoal,

Getting rid of Double Chin A double chin is a layer of subcutaneous fat around the neck that sags down and creates a wrinkle making the owner appear to have a second chin. As we age or gain excess weight, the musculus mylohyoideus, which is the muscle underneath the chin, loses elasticity and the area plumps up when you gain weight. If losing weight with by Dr Natnicha Loichuen exercise and a healthy diet doesn’t help you lose your double chin, you can try massage to help you lose it naturally before you resort to cosmetic surgery. If your double chin is genetic, these strategies are unlikely to have a major impact. Obesity is one of the primary causes of a double chin, but others don’t have time too much to do workout because of busy schedule at work or some other activities, that’s why there are easy and a non-invasive way to cut the fats in just a short time. A shot that dissolves fat will offer people with a double chin a way to get rid of it without surgery and we called that Mesolipo. The Mesolipo shot dissolves excess fat deposits in just the right place and it helps you lose inches, improves your body shape and contour, and smoothens and tightens your skin. It removes fibrotic, hardened connective tissue and hence improves the appearance of your skin. A cocktail of vitamins, amino acids, minerals and supplements is administered in a specific area of your body which tightens the skin and breaks down the existing fat cells. The liquefied fat will be flushed out naturally from your body through the lymphatic system. The procedure uses finest needle into the targeted area so there is no anaesthetic or numbing cream needed.

Before

After

One treatment takes only 5 minutes. There is no downtime with the Mesolipo shots so you can immediately return to your everyday life. Radio Frequency is a non-surgical means of “reshaping” the body and the face from beneath the superficial layer of the skin. This method uses sophisticated devices specifically designed to treat men and women’s most common skin aging problems like wrinkles, excess fatty tissues, or cellulite. The method utilizes radio frequency waves which is basically heat energy meant for tissue remodeling and production of elastin and new collagen. Unlike invasive procedures which primarily affect the most superficial layers of the skin, the resulting heat of the Radio Frequency treatment works mainly on the deepest layer of the skin, the dermis, without affecting the upper layers that are above it such as the epidermis. As heat is a stimulation that promotes contraction of the underlying tissues, especially at the dermis level, soft tissues found within that area of the body compress, realign, and even produce new collagen, a process that normally takes many months to complete. With healthy new collagen present from the deepest level of the skin, exposing such soft tissues to further radio frequency waves help sculpt and tighten those tissues into a more youthful and elastic surface. Mesolipo and Radio Frequency is a very good combination to get rid of the double chin. And in line with this, we do have a promotion for the combination treatment to easily trim down your double chin. For as low as 6,000 baht you can have these two treatments.

Muay Thai Oath by Rory Coughlan

The Yok Khru, each Ajarn (master) can have different styles of Yok Khru. The ceremony, where the student presents an offering to their master. The offering can consist of incense sticks and candles. Money and other objects can also be presented, depending on the requirements of the master. When the students have gathered all the required materials to offer, they proceed to their master. The master then accepts the offering and initiate the students the basic movement of Wai Khru, namely, Thep Panom position and the movement of Prom Si Na (Four-faced Promma), and then progressing to Yang Sam Khum (Three-step Movement). The master demonstrates all these traditional and graceful movements for the benefit of his students who will then be required to

imitate him. Some masters might begin teaching the students immediately, kicking, punching, to practice tricks, making full use of feet, knees and elbows as well as footwork. Some might make their students engage in sparring with partners until they became fluent. When fluency is attained, the ceremony of Wai Khru or Yok Khru begins. Often masters prefer to have a number of well-trained students before they initiate the Wai Khru ceremony. The oath ceremony is a kin to an oath of a gentleman, the oath given to the master by the student that honesty is far more worthy than one’s life. Any boxer who thinks to contravene this oath might offend face with ruin without fail in the future. The master shall teach and the boxer shall give the oath that I will ensure that I am clean, strong and behave with honesty and integrity. I will not bully those weaker than myself. I will undertake good deeds to the benefit of others and be loyal to the nation. I will avoid causing trouble of any kind. We will be united and help one another whenever possible. There is an old saying that “Anyone who has not behaved in accordance with the oath shall be doomed”.

Responsible Travel, the online travel agent specialising in responsible tourism, reveals its predictions for key destinations and trends colouring travel in 2017, driven it says, by an increasingly polarised tourism industry. With the results of Brexit and the Trump vote in, Responsible Travel believes that tourism will become more polarised than ever before in 2017: one side dominated by a climate of fear and mistrust of strangers and the other trailing a growing trend for authentic and intrepid experiences. Halted by fear: Destinations perceived as ‘unsafe’ will be avoided by many travellers as mainstream travel companies choose to capitalise on their fear; marketing holidays that provide a safe ‘home-from-home’, away from local people and real experiences. The continued growth of the cruise industry, Turkey’s decrease in tourists and the fact that Tunisia continues to be closed highlight this trepidation. In the meantime, Tenerife (a traditionally ‘safe’, home-from-home destination) looks set to welcome its highest number of visitors ever recorded. Feel the fear and do it anyway... Responsible Travel cites its own rapid 22 percent year-on-year growth as indicative of an ever increasing trend for authentic, intrepid experiences as travellers become more driven by the ‘experience economy’. The company has recorded a 49 percent increase in revenue from Iran holidays, often cited as a more ‘unusual’ destination. It is also the more adventurous travellers, according to Responsible Travel, who are becoming more engaged with responsible tourism issues, backed by research which reports an increase in interest in Iran

Norway

responsible tourism over the last couple of years. WHERE’S HOT FOR 2017? Croatia Responsible Travel reports that Croatia is its second best-selling destination, with a 20 percent increase – reflecting its appeal for holidaymakers looking for more authentic experiences. It offers an abundance of locally sourced fresh food, delicious, locally-produced wine and a warm welcome from local people keen to embrace tourism as the country recovers from the civil war of the 1990s. Iran Since British Airways restarted its connection to Tehran, the upwards trend of visitors intrigued by the unique culture, and new experiences offered by this country doesn’t look to be stopping in 2017 with Responsible Travel recording a 49 percent increase in revenue from Iran holidays. Norway Northern lights and winter holidays away from the ski slopes

photo: Activities Abroad

continue to rise in popularity as tourists seek new experiences. But the unique opportunity to also go whale watching is a huge draw for visitors to Norway and is driving a 38 percent increase in revenue – as consumers turn away from captive whale encounters, to more ethical alternatives. WHERE’S NOT? USA Responsible Travel has seen a 57 percent decrease in revenue from US trips and expects a lower level of demand to continue through 2017. A combination of Trump and the effect of Brexit on the strength of the pound means that the US is not the destination of choice for responsible travellers in 2017. Burma It seems that for 2017, Burma’s bubble has burst. Pent-up demand for a chance to visit this ‘untouched’ destination has increased prices, meaning it is no longer a cheap destination. It will take a while for infrastructure to catch up with visitor numbers, and until it does it seems the Burma shine has worn off.

Thailand International Motor Expo 2016 – “TIME”

automotive by John K. Lindgren Editor-in-chief: carsanook.com

Annual Year-end Auto Exhibition at IMPACT Muang Thong Thani It was “TIME” again, the 33rd edition of the yearly motor expo cum sales extravaganza kicked off with the participation of 36 brands of cars/ trucks and 19 brands of motorbikes including iconic nameplates such as Aston Martin, Rolls-Royce, HarleyDavidson and Royal Enfield. Car sales went down 17 percent and motorbikes climbed up 38 percent. The 2016 Motor Expo (December 2-12) was themed “Connect the World... Connect People: Smart Vehicles” and the big event went ahead as originally planned with activities appropriately amended plus stringent control over how models were attired as well as the cancellation of the 'Smart Pretty Vote'. This exceptional ruling was put in place with due respect to the recent passing of the country's late King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The late Thai monarch passed away on October 13, 2016 at the age of 88, after 70 years on the throne. Highlights from the exhibition floors featured a great variety of vehicles from a limited edition BMW two-door coupe to a glimpse of pending massmarket seven-seat crossovers. First the BMW M4 GTS Coupe with only 700

units available in the world, a fierce, souped-up Beemer M4 propelled by a 500-hp 3.0-liter turbo engine with racy exterior and interior trim. The price a cool 14 million baht. Two prototype/concept crossovers: Hyundai Enduro Concept from South Korea is purely a show car that blends a three-door hatchback body with SUV stance. A four-seat crossover with pronounced styling cues like the oversized black flared fenders. Under the bonnet a 2-liter turbo unit hooked up to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The Japanese rolled out Mitsubishi XM Concept vehicle. A crossover MPV with futuristic angular design is Mitsubishi's compact people carrier developed to compete with Honda BR-V. Expect the new 'Mitsu' XM with seven seats to be productionready next year. More exhibition snippets: The German, Munich based BMW introduced a price-leading version of the 330e plug-in hybrid in sport luxury guise costing 2.599 million baht. From Stuttgart, the new Mercedes-Benz C250 Coupe. Now locally assembled in CKD form to help bring down its price to 3.24 million baht in Sport and 3.59

million baht in AMG Dynamic trim. From the Thai-Chinese MG a smaller 1.5-liter petrol engine with directinjection and turbo power. The MG GS compact SUV now joins the bigger 2.0-liter model in Thai showrooms. Price range: 890,000 to 990,000 baht. The European motorcycle brands displayed cool big bikes including: BMW, Ducati, KTM, Triumph and one three-wheeler (tricycle) Piaggio. All the bike stands attracted big crowds of onlookers. said that while vehicle bookings at the event failed to hit the organizer's expectation of 50,000 units, most distributors expressed satisfaction with the figures given the current situation. Toyota saw the most booking at 5,124 units, followed by Honda (4,902), Isuzu (3,620), Mazda (3,434) and Ford (2,441). In the premium segment Mercedes-Benz secured the most bookings with 1,722 units, while BMW came second with 979 vehicles. Chalatchai added that motorcycle bookings fared better that expectations, led by GPX (1,109),

Vespa (1,059), Yamaha (1,040), Honda (791) and Stallions (722). Inter-Media Consultant Co, the organizer of Thailand International Motor Expo 2016, concluded that the vehicle bookings tallied 40,364 units from November 30 to December 12 (including Press/VIP day), down 10.1 percent from year 2015. Totally 32,422 cars/trucks were booked, down 17.1 percent while motorcycle bookings shot up 38.2 percent to 7,942. Happy & Safe Motoring Year 2017

2016 – What a Year It Was!

Looking back at the past year, I clearly remember that it started with some rather exciting headlines that ultimately defined the year itself. As opposed headlines in the first days of 2015, such as ‘Numbers of tourists from Russia falling by the minute,’ 2016 headlines foretold another boom year ahead with throngs of Chinese tourists and predictions of 30 million tourists by the end of 2016. Yes, 2016 began as a year of great hope that record numbers of Chinese would visit Thailand and leave behind stacks and stacks of yuan to energize the Thai economy and help fund Pattaya businesses.

Unfortunately, with the ‘zero baht tours’ policy imposed by the Kingdom and with the Chinese setting up their own tour and real estate companies, the competition has been more than a challenge for us locals to tap into. As 2016 rolled on, it was not enough to bolster an already somber and declining real estate market. The year started with exciting n e w s f ro m Te r r y Bl a c k b u r n , managing director, Property Report Asia Magazine and Asian Property Awards events. He reported that

Ensign Media’s assets and operations had become part of PropertyGuru, Asia’s leading online property portal group. Indeed, Property Guru had a banner year, holding their worldclass property awards events in eight Southeast Asian nations and in China. And in conjunction with each event, they presented their industry-leading Property Report Congress, which was extremely successful last year. Back to early 2016 when things were not moving along so well, Bart Walters—a top real estate journalist on the Eastern Seaboard—wrote an article asking, ‘Where are the buyers?’ In response, I requested Bart’s permission to reprint the article in

to Thailand and that up to one million were expected by the end of 2016. Another bright spot in 2016 was when the Phoenix Gold Golf and Country Club was given the Kings

Furthermore, another new organization was making big news for our Asia Pacific region: the ASEAN Real Estate Networking Alliance (ARENA). In late August, the group presented the ARENA

Cup Golf Tournament for three years in a row, starting with a handsome prize of US $750,000. For the first time, the King’s Cup was jointly sanctioned by The European Tour, which received 25 spots for its players at the Phoenix Gold Golf and Country Club.

Conference & Expo in Bangkok, where I gave my ‘Asia Pacific Middle Class Explosion’ presentation to an audience of almost 500. Almost immediately thereafter, a large contingent of Thailand’s property professionals travelled to Incheon, South Korea, for the Second International Realtors Conference which drew participants

Pattaya Today because his points really hit home and made a great case as to all the elements affecting real estate. Yes, an excellent article about a tough real estate market. Well done, Bart Walters! To c o m p o u n d t h e t o u g h economic outlook, we had a relatively new military government that inspired me to write a piece I called, ‘Not a Good Time for Expats.’ It focused on the issues facing the country and its new prime minister, Prayut Chan-o-cha, who was facing much scrutiny. Last May I was in Washington, D.C., as a delegate of the National Association of Realtors® (NAR), which was hosting its annual Mid-Year Legislative Conference for several thousand members from around the world. We visited Capitol Hill where we conferred with top government officials at the House of Representatives. Soon thereafter, I was appointed to the NAR International Board of Directors. On my return to Pattaya, I was greeted with the news that the Russians were coming back! Yes, incoming tourist figures were showing that Russian holiday makers were beginning to return

Actually we had a pretty exciting series of events to finish the year starting with the Property Report Congress Thailand where I was the Congress Chairman. That evening was the spectacular Thailand Property Awards and gala dinner. Next stop Singapore, where I was the Thailand panel moderator for the Property Report Congress Singapore. Later that evening I presented the coveted Best Green Award to Deutsches Haus Ho Chi Minh City by Deutsches Haus Ho Chi Minh Stadt Ltd. for Best Green Development (South East Asia). So while it may have started on a relatively negative note, the year 2016 actually did have some real high points and, I would say, money in the bank for our real estate future here on the Eastern Seaboard.

The ASEAN +3 (China, Japan and South Korea) and in fact the entire Asia Pacific rim actually had a good year. Some countries, like Vietnam, Philippines and Myanmar, had a great year filled with progress and unification for all in the region. That can only be the foundation for better years to come!

Procedures for the Registration of Birth, Death, Marriage and Divorce Notification of Birth A birth occurring in Thailand is  legally recognized  under Thai Law only if it has been duly registered at the District Office. If one of the parents is not a Thai national, it is advisable to also report the birth of the child to their respective embassy, who will issue a consular report of birth abroad or a birth certificate. For birth taking place in the house, the host or the mother (or any assignee) must notify the local registrar within 15 days of the birth. For birth taking place outside the house, the father or the mother or the assignee must notify the registrar of the birth district or of a district convenient to the place of birth within 15 days to 30 days of the birth. The penalty for failing to do so is up to 1,000 baht. Documents required in making the notification of birth: A) The identification card of the host, or the father, or the mother B) The host’s copy of the house registration book C) Same as (A) with the assignee’s identification card as another option

citizenship and the absence of legal impediments to their getting married. The completed declaration documents will then have to be translated into Thai by an approved translation office and legalized by the Legalization Division, Department of Consular Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bangkok. Supporting Documents: 1. Valid citizen identification cards of both applicants 2. The host’s copy of the house registration book 3. Two witnesses with citizen ID cards 4. Birth certificate(s) or house registration book(s) of offspring (if any) 5. Proof of divorce registration in case either applicant has a previous registered marriage 6. Consent of both parents given in person if applicant is a minor (i.e. under 20 years of age) Once registered, the marriage will be considered legal according to Thai law and will be recognized throughout the world.

Divorce Registration If the marriage is registered in Thailand, an uncontested divorce in Thailand can be obtained by appearing in person at the registration office, or at the embassy or consulate where the marriage has been registered. Supporting documents: 1. Valid citizen identification cards of both applicants 2. The host’s copy of the house registration book, both copies of the marriage certificate, personal name change certificate (if any) 3. Two witnesses with citizen ID cards, divorce agreement 4. Birth certificate(s) or house registration book(s) of offspring (if any) The divorce agreement is the settlement agreement between parties on the division of assets and on issues of child support, child custody, children’s living arrangements and visitation rights. It is recommended to settle on these important matters beforehand to ensure that there are no disagreements before going to the registration office.

Notification of Death In Thailand, any death of a foreign national or a Thai citizen must be reported to the District Office or to the police within 24 hours. If a foreigner dies in an apartment or a hotel, the landlord or the hotel manager will be required to report the death with the deceased’s passport and death certificate, if available. The District Office or the police will, within seven days, inform the foreigner’s embassy of the death and the embassy will, in turn, notify the next of kin as soon as possible. If the person dies in a hospital, a death certificate will be issued by the doctor and the police will file a report. The body will be released to the family within two to three days if the cause of death is without any complications. There shall be a delay in the release of the body if the cause of death is suspicious, or a criminal act is suspected, because an autopsy will have to be performed first. When the death is confirmed, civil death certificate will be issued by the District Office. Marriage Registration Marriage registration in Thailand can be done in any registration office within the country. Foreigners start with affirmations from their respective embassies in Thailand confirming their

Business News GM Thailand open market boosts sustainable growth General Motors Thailand and Chevrolet Sales Thailand managing director, Wail Farghaly, told the Thailand Automotive Institute’s CEO Forum that economies of scale and open markets were critical to the ASEAN automotive industry becoming more globally competitive. The CEO forum – entitled “Vision for Thai Automotive Industry Master Plan 2017 to 2021" – sets directions for the Thai automotive industry in the next 10 years. It is a forum for formulating policy frameworks, national strategies, measures and long term action plans for industry development. The participants included CEOs from automakers, parts manufacturers and other stakeholders at Impact Muangthong Thani. “To enhance global and regional competitiveness, economies of scale in production and sales must be achieved,” said Farghaly. “In order for Thailand and other ASEAN manufacturers to gain greater access to export markets, individual countries will need to open up their own markets to more global competition. Meanwhile, each country must be specialized on specific products.” GM and Chevrolet Sales Thailand focus on their core product: pickup trucks and SUVs, which represent 60 percent of the total auto market in Thailand. The company recently launched all-new Colorado and Trailblazer to the Thai

market. “As the largest and most capable auto manufacturing industry in ASEAN, Thailand can lead and will certainly gain from pioneering free trade efforts. These efforts include continued progress of the ASEAN Economic Community to eliminating barriers to trade and adopting common and globally recognized standards across ASEAN,” added Farghaly. For new technology such as

electric vehicle (EV), Farghaly said the technology exists – such as in the Chevrolet Bolt – but it needed to be supported by infrastructure and a preferential tax structure for all types of EVs, to drive consumer demand. Supporting more efficient powertrains into the future, the company also hopes that in markets around the world, governments can provide clear and transparent direction on the future regulations for emissions and CO2.

Youth Focus Differentiation in the Classroom by Ayesha Rahman It’s a term that every teacher has heard: differentiation. Differentiation is defined by the Training and Development Agency for Schools as ‘the process by which differences between learners are accommodated so that all students in a group have the best possible chance of learning’. In recent decades it has come to be considered a key skill for any teacher, especially those of mixed-ability classes. But what does it really mean? In a large class, differentiation works on  three key aspects which can be summed up as follows: Readiness to learn, learning needs and interest. These differences may sound rather broad, but by

applying effective methods of differentiation, it is possible to cater for quite wide variations among learners. One of the core methods of differentiation is, by task, which involves setting different tasks for students of

different abilities. Collaborative learning has many well-documented benefits such as enabling shy students to participate more confidently in class, but it’s also a useful method. Small, mixedability groups allow lower achievers to take advantage of peer support whilst higher achievers gain the opportunity to organise and voice their thoughts for the benefit of the whole group. Grouping also allows roles to be allocated within the team which cater for each member’s skill set and learning needs. Resourcing, in this method it’s important to recognise that some students can work with more advanced resources than others, and that it is possible to use multiple materials in order to approach a topic from different angles.

In the traditional classroom, activities are completed within a single time frame, irrespective of the level of difficulty for some students. The result is that more advanced learners can be held back to the speed of the less able ones, and at the other end of the scale, some may simply find it impossible to keep up. When differentiation is used in planning, the available time is used flexibly in order to meet all students’ needs. Students who quickly grasp core activities need not be held back because their classmates need to spend more time on the fundamentals of a topic. They can instead be allocated more challenging extension tasks in order to develop a more

rounded understanding of the subject matter. Differentiation by outcome is a technique whereby all students undertake the same task but a variety of results is expected and acceptable. Differentiation by dialogue is the most regularly used type of differentiation in the classroom. With this technique, the emphasis is on the role of the teacher, who must facilitate problem solving by identifying which students need detailed explanations in simple language and which students can engage in dialogue at a more sophisticated level. The teacher may also employ targeted questioning to produce a range of responses and to challenge the more able students. Verbal

support and encouragement also play a crucial part in this technique. Differentiation in the classroom is all about understanding that we are dealing with a group of diverse individuals and adapting our teaching to ensure that all of them have access to learn. It should be an on-going and flexible process which not only profiles students initially but also recognises progress and areas for improvement and adjusts accordingly to ensure learning needs continue to be met. In short, it shifts the focus from teaching a subject to teaching the students.  Ayesha Rahman is a Year 1 teacher in Mooltripakdee International School.

Singapore International School of Bangkok commemorates 15th Anniversary with ceremony to unveil all-new secondary complex

Singapore International School of Bangkok (SISB) commemorates two major milestones with a ceremony last month to commemorate the group’s 15th Anniversary, as well as the launch of the new Secondary Complex. The event was presided over by Wong Kai Jiun, chargé d’Affaires a.i., Embassy of the Republic of Singapore, who unveiled the Merlion statue of the new Secondary Complex. Distinguished guests, Chen Jiang, counsellor, Embassy of the People’s Republic of China and Nontigorn Kanchanachitra,

independent director / chairman of The Board of Directors of SISB Group, as well as some 300 guests including dignitaries from Embassy of the Republic of Singapore, Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, Singapore-Thai Chamber of Commerce, Malaysian-Thai Chamber of Commerce, Office of the Private Education Commission and valued partners and representatives from various international schools and corporate institutions also joined the management, staff, parents and students of SISB

for the event. The event featured performances by the students of SISB and the Youth Philharmonic Orchestra of the China Conservatory of Music from Beijing in the new Creative Arts & Media Centre (CAMC) of SISB Pracha Uthit campus. The new Secondary School Complex, which spans 9.5-rai (built-up area 26,600 sqm), is the largest investment of the SISB Group to date. “This new Secondary School Complex is a testament to SISB’s commitment towards providing students with a

holistic learning environment where they excel academically and acquire skills and competencies that allow them to become global citizens in the 21st century.” said Koh, chief executive officer, SISB Group and Chairman of the

School Governing Board (Pracha Uthit). Koh added “In the next 15 years we envision ourselves to be a school of choice with a holistic environment for our students to experience a unique learning journey,

and prepare them with diverse skills and abilities to become world leaders, innovators, entrepreneurs, athletes, performers and develop compassion for the less fortunate and care for the environment.”

This & That The Man With The Golden Gun Lives!

Popular Conspiracy Theories When he was in power Muammar Gaddafi was a lover of conspiracy theories, so it’s not surprising they are still swirling around him. For example, he used to put around that the Pan Am Lockerbie plane bombing in

1988 was the work of Iran (avenging American attacks on them) or of South Africa (hiding a diamond smuggling enterprise by ensuring the evidence was lost) or even of the USA government (looking for an excuse to close down

Reports of Gaddafi’s death exaggerated

the loss-making Pan Am). Once the Arab Spring revolt got under way, Gaddafi tried to pass the buck once again. The revolt in his country, centred on Bengazi, was really a secret conspiracy between the US president Obama and Al Qaeda to introduce Sharia law into Libya. Remember that Obama was a secret Muslim with a fake birth certificate! But is Gaddafi really dead now? Was he really found hiding in a drain pipe and dragged out into the sunshine to be beaten up and fatally shot in his home town? Well, not everyone believes so. Now that the fine detail is starting to emerge, the possibility that the execution of Muammar Gaddafi was a carefully crafted illusion has to be considered, at any rate by dedicated conspiracy theorists. They say that one of the glaring errors is the huge number of weapons and shooters involved. The grainy and blurred images of Gaddafi’s last minute or so of life are not convincing evidence, say the conspiracy

The Liberating Power of Brexit by Isidoros Karderinis The referendum of June 23, 2016 regarding Britain’s remain at or exit from the European Union, through its subversive BREXIT result - the first major, painful defeat for the under German control European Union of the banks and multinationals, undoubtedly shook the dominant British and European political and economical system. This will power of the sovereign British people can not be violated-that is thrown in the bin of rubbishby any tribunal, parliament or government, because such a development would be clearly undemocratic aberration. The British, taken as a whole, are not the people of a protectorate who might have perhaps a slave mentality. They are the proud people of a great country that in the past has been an empire and today is one of the world's largest economies. The British therefore, who are also the winners of two world wars, have developed a highly dignified attitude and behavior. So, the British citizens who endured with unprecedented fortitude and bravery the fierce bombardments of the Nazi air force in World War II, would not be able to accept, -against any short-term negative economicc impacts arising from the BREXIT-, the German domination and leadership in the European Union. Thus, the incredible surprise

of the German political leaders and far away standing bureaucrats in Brussels caused by this amazing, liberating for the ordinary people result, on that promising and sunny dawn of June 24, 2016, does not comply in any way with any historical knowledge and thorough data analysis. Germany's assiduous effort to put under its complete control the European people and level once again the continent –this time not by the use of military weapons as in the past, but the use of economic ones-, presents similar, ignorant of history characteristics. It is obvious that the Germans, who cannot control in any way their great political and economic power, are completely ignorant of the history, and so now, find themselves -by mathematical determinism- on the verge of a new defeat that will come through the imminent, unraveling of the European Union. The European Union, which in 1993 through the Maastricht treaty replaced the until then EEC, is basically a by default unnatural and defective political and economic union of states with different political, legal, economic, military and cultural levels, but as well a union of people who feel like strangers to each other, without any mutual and brotherly feelings of solidarity Thus, the grandiose pronouncements and unrealistic visions for a democratic and prosperous from end to end

European Union could not but be bitterly ruled out. Germany, taking advantage of the impacts of the crisis erupted in September 2008 through the grandiose collapse of the banks (Lehman Brothers), and invoking -of course- the Maastricht Stability Pact and the need for reform packages so that the negative effects of the crisis can be confronted, has been implementing since then -with exaggerated dominance- a kind of economic totalitarianism, mostly against the weak Member States of the European periphery. The anti-grass roots economic plans of the strictest neoliberal austerity imposed by Berlin have indeed leveled the societies of the southern Europe countries. In Greece, -which is certainly the most typical example of the pilot implementation of these incredibly absurd and economically irrational policies-, unemployment has increased dramatically to 26.8 percent of the workforce, while 36 percent of the Greek population lives below the poverty line. In Italy, 24.4 percent of the population is facing the risk of poverty and social exclusion. In Spain 22.2 percent of the households live below the poverty line and more than one in three children, -that means 2.6 million, - are facing the risk of poverty and social exclusion. In Portugal, one in four children lives below the poverty line and a total of about

proponents. The colonel’s own body guard fired the fatal shot, but his mission was to eliminate a Gaddafi double in glorious technicolour and to allow Fuzzyhair to escape. Those mobile phone images shown round the world should win the Academy Award for the best foreign film of 2011. So you are urged not to believe a word of it. Gaddafi still lives and will be returning from Niger shortly to resume the civil war and lead a large army to re-conquer Tripoli. Or, in another version, he will turn up in Argentina in 10 years time masterminding the casinos or planning to make his very late retirement on the planet Mars. By that time he’ll be nearly 80 years old, so he had best get a move on with any extra-terrestrial plans. Still not convinced? In the so-called drainpipe assassination, Gaddafi’s daughter Aisha just happened to make a phone call to dad just moments before he died. Of course, he wasn’t able to answer the phone as he was being beaten up at the time,

or at any rate his stand-in double was. But wait a moment, say the conspiracy lobbyists. What was Gaddafi doing carrying a mobile phone when being hunted by NATO and the Americans with all their hi-tech equipment? His daughter would be sentencing him to death by calling him when the Americans were obviously monitoring his every movement. One of the grainy images of Gaddafi’s death, or of the volunteer standing in, shows a UFO standing by in the sky. Ah, so maybe Gaddafi’s murder was supervised by aliens who disliked Gaddafi’s hairstyle or wanted to steal his golden gun? You may recall that photos were shown in 2001 claiming that UFOs supervised the destruction of the twin towers in the suicide mission (9/11) of that time. UFOs can explain just about anything. Incidentally, one conspiracy theorist has come up with the notion that it’s not Gaddafi in the grainy photos of the so-called

murder because that guy is wearing a wig which comes off during the struggle on the back of a pickup truck. Or perhaps you prefer the associated theory that the corpse of Gaddafi in the morgue later on is wearing the wrong sort of wig. As he was starting to smell and decompose in the meat fridge by day three, few people ventured near enough to examine his hair. At length you have to decide why anybody would go to all this trouble to pretend that Gaddafi was dead. Well, maybe he just wanted to escape to live and fight another day. Or maybe somebody influential wanted to smuggle him out of the country. According to one conspiracy buff on the internet, the Americans wanted to smuggle Gaddafi out of the country as he has enough gold hidden away to solve the US economic problems and ensure that Obama wins the next presidential election. It’s a shame you can’t believe everything you read on Facebook.

two million people - 20 percent of its population- live amid poverty and destitution. In the same time, Germany has clearly received unprecedented economic benefits. Its extremely big profits arise from the transfer of investors’ money to «low risk» German bonds due to the crisis plaguing the eurozone. Especially after 2009, yields on German bonds have reached the bottom of the barrel, while in some cases (eg 5-year German bonds) reached negative interest rates. That means that Germany not only does not pay to borrow, but on the contrary, investors -given the insecurity in the euro zone- pay it in order to safeguard their money. Thus, in five years time (20102015), Germany has managed to save a total of EUR 100 billion, equivalent to 3 percent of its GDP, precisely because of the dramatic reduction in borrowing costs. So, it is more than obvious to every benevolent observer that the European Union -and surely the extremely neoliberal eurozone- operates in the interests of the hegemonic and dominant Germany at the expense of other Member States and mainly at the expense of the southern Europe countries. The extremely high trade surpluses achieved by Germany, -eg. in 2013 it had a trade surplus of 200 billions thus remaining a highly competitive state, -are certainly due to the great German economic machine but in the same time they are scandalously increased by the unfair eurozone monetary system.

Germany for the first time in many years, apart from its economic boom, has become a first rate international player, given that its political leadership has found itself at a key position thus being able to represent the other European countries, without being asked to. So Great Britain’s - the first military power, a permanent member of the UN Security Council and the country with the third largest contribution to the EU budget- exit from the European Union, represents a fatal blow to the international status of the European Union and first of all to the status of Germany. In the same time, the European Union institutions and decision-making processes lack democratic legitimacy and they are distant and inaccessible to the ordinary European citizen. Thus, a deep democratic deficit directly opposing the founding treaties of the European Union and grossly violating the original declaratory core of values, is clearly visible The people of Europe do not exert absolutely any direct influence on the important European Union decision-making institutions –i.e the European Council with its strong centralized role and the European Commission with its highly bureaucratic and technocratic nature- while these institutions have absolutely no accountability to the citizens. On the other hand, the directly elected European Parliament, which is based in Strasbourg, does not possess by no means sufficient powers and continues to be a weak

link. In conclusion, the European Union which has been reduced into a type of German colony, despite the illusions cultivated by certain political circles, is not willing to change or improve, or even acquire a democratic, social role. Thus came the great time for the enslaved countries within the European Union and the euro zone to follow the shining example of Great Britain and the proud British people, to break their steel shacklesand get liberated, looking forward with a widespread hope and optimism. This & That Your Pattaya Horrorscope

by Karen Burns, www.UrbaneWomen.com

How To Make Him Fall In Love With You Getting a guy to notice you is one thing, but how do you get him to really pay attention?

What’s more, if he thinks there are other guys interested in you, his competitive nature will kick in – guys always seem to want most the girl they think they can’t have! 5. Work On Your Listening Skills

by Professor Blunt

(Jan 23-Feb22)  Aquarius You are hoping that 2012 will

be a lot better for you than 2011. Well, it won’t be. You are still stuck in Pattaya with a poor, frozen pension and prices are going up all the time. Thousands of Aquarians have already been cremated in Pattaya and, to be absolutely frank, you are just another one waiting in line for the inevitable. You remember with fondness the 1960s which was the last time you could go around naked without people laughing out loud. Pisces (Feb23-Mar22) Your memory is going from bad to worse. You can recall what you were doing on the day Kennedy was shot but have no idea which dvd you watched last night. However January 2012 promises to be full of surprises for you. These could include a demand for back tax from your home country’s internal revenue service or an email from a former lover who wants to borrow a lot of money again. Aries (Mar23-Apr22) You are far too fond of your own voice which is one of the consequences of being born with ram’s horns. You would love to post a Youtube video of yourself giving a lecture on The Milky Way, but you are too thick to understand how to do it. Whenever you get up to speak at any of the local expat clubs here in Pattaya there is always a rush to the buffet if not to the general exit. This saves the organizers holding a fire drill. Taurus (Apr23-May22) Like all bulls you are very earthy which is another way of saying you don’t shower often enough. You feel you are going absolutely nowhere in life and this is exactly so. The most exciting thing likely to happen to you in 2012 will be sitting in a baht bus with a flat tire or standing behind a group of Russians in the hamburger queue or being in the immigration office when there’s a power cut. Gemini (May23-Jun22) You are popular only amongst people who are attracted to schizophrenics. You like to imagine you are a cross between Plato and Shakespeare but, in reality, you are a mixture of Tony the Tiger and Woody Woodpecker. Many Geminis are bisexual but they should rejoice they are not hermaphrodites which would mean they could never undress in public as well as being hard to spell for illiterates such as you. Cancer (Jun23-Jul22) It’s surprising you came to Pattaya to live because your idea of an exciting time is an argument with yourself in the bathtub. Hitler’s deputy was a Cancerian although, to be fair, he argued with the rubber duck rather than with himself. One of your greatest obsessions is your belief that people are screwing you although this is not the case in the sense that you would like. It would help if you picked your nose with just one hand.

We’ve got seven things you can do that will soon have him eating out of the palm of your hand and eager to take it to the next level! 1. Tone It Down A Notch When we want someone to pay attention to us, we have a tendency to want to give and do things for him, to show our interest and affection. But it can actually have the opposite affect by appearing too needy or overbearing. Guys don’t like feeling smothered by a girl, and will be turned off by someone who does too much. 2. Laugh A Lot Of course you don’t want to go overboard and look crazy, but guys love a girl that laughs at their jokes. Being a good sport about taking a joke is also a very attractive trait and can have him looking at you a little closer. Don’t be afraid of letting go a little bit and having a laugh with him! 3. Always Look Your Best

One of the quickest ways to anyone’s heart is to let them know that you care about what they have to say. And men love it when they feel like you’re really listening to them. If you listen carefully, you can pick up hints about the things that are most important to him, which helps you get to know him better. Don’t forget to ask him questions that require more than a “yes” or “no” answer – if you can show interest in the things he likes, even better! Be ready to give your opinion on his interests, but don’t dominate the conversation. 6. Learn To Maintain Eye Contact Eye contact is a sign of honest intention, so making romantic eye contact can help improve your odds with your crush. If you catch his eye from across a room, let your eyes linger a moment longer than normal. Let him know you’re looking at him. If you get one on one time with him, make sure you look him in the eyes while he talks and let him know that all your attention is on him. A shy glance with a smile is another way to make his heart flutter. 7. Be Yourself

Facts are facts – they call good looking people “attractive” because they attract the opposite sex. But you don’t have to be a model to be attractive; you just have to take care of your appearance. Make sure you’re always clean and dressed nicely. Sexy is okay, but don’t overdo it. Dress in clothes that flatter your body so that you can be confident; confidence looks good on everyone. 4. Don’t Be Too Easy To Get It might seem a little like playing games, but being a little hard-to-get works! Guys don’t always want the “low hanging fruit”, they’d rather have something that’s a little harder to get. When it’s more of a challenge, they value you more.

This is the most important thing of all – always be true to yourself and who you are. Don’t change yourself or deny things that are important to you just because you think it will make him like you. If you start pretending to be what you aren’t, sooner or later you’ll end up being miserable. The strongest relationships are created when people are honest with each other and create a union built on trust. (Jul23-Aug22) It’s odd to  Leo think of you as a born leader of men as you are in reality a doormat for people to walk over. To try and compensate for this you kiss mirrors a great deal, especially when you are in the nude. Research has shown that most people arrested for disgusting sexual practices, such as necrophilia, are Leos. You like to think of yourself as a lion but the only connection is that you both have slimy noses and a cleft lip. Virgo (Aug23-Sep22) You are obsessed with cleanliness which is why you seldom venture onto Beach Road at night. In fact you rarely leave the house as you are usually on your hands and knees scrubbing the floor with a magnifying glass. One of your phobias is to find the water in the bathroom has been cut off just after you have had sex. There’s no need to worry as hiring a prostitute is way out of your budget. You have a great fear of cat hair. Libra (Sep23-Oct22) You are obsessed with your own selfimportance. You have already joined fifteen Rotary clubs but have not been elected to the committee of any one of them. You are aware you are a complete jerk but persist in seeking out advice in the most unlikely of places, for example the weekly TV schedule and advertising hoardings. The best thing about you is you can explain, when drunk, the difference between café au lait and café latte. Scorpio (Oct23-Nov22) Sadly you are wrong about nearly everything. You think a computer hacker needs a kitchen knife and that an Indian meal is a Red Cross parcel. Fast food to you is finishing a hamburger and chips before the waitress has brought the knife and fork. You even sent your condolences when the wife of a dead African dictator asked you if she could put her husband’s cash in your bank account. You must avoid The Walking Street at all costs. Sagittarius (Nov23-Dec22) Your new year resolution is to be able to buy a sequined dress to wear, but that’s unlikely if you are a tubby man in his late 60s. Amongst your other unfulfilled desires are to buy highheel shoes, which unfortunately are not made in size Euro 48, and to fit into a nurse’s uniform. This latter hope is also impossible as the only thing that will fit is the hat. Your application to join the Tiffany show chorus is unlikely to be acknowledged. Capricorn (Dec23-Jan22) All Capricorns are dishonest persons of the worst kind. Most politicians were born under this sign but often lie under oath when questioned about the matter. When you were at school, you read Cinderella six times trying to work out how to steal Prince Charming’s jewelry. It is assumed that, following a nuclear war, only cockroaches and Capricorns will survive. This will mean that possessing a mobile phone will be pointless.

Conquer Greenwood

by Derek Brook

Pattana (Stableford) It seems that the trip to Pattana is a monthly trip these days, and the ‘nines’ to be played on the day was to be the B and C nines and started us out on the most difficult hole to tee off on. Yes the dreaded B1. With water right and left you have to hit a good drive to stay on the short grass, and I thought I had, until my caddie said the dreaded words ‘Nam’. Sure I have heard it before. As said in previous reports this is a clubhouse with class and on this day the drive up there was probably one of the best I have seen. The road was quiet and there were no hold ups at all. Just thought I would mention that as sometimes the drive is horrific. Back to the golf, and surprisingly there was a fair bit of water on the course, or soggy bits, and other parts were hard and a bit bare. All in all, the course was in reasonable condition with the greens fast and true. We did

Younger wins by lengths KhaoKheow An eager group of 18 golfers headed out to Khao Keow to tackle A and B nines in that order. The conditions were overcast and with little wind about it seemed perfect for good scoring…that changed quickly when the wind appeared from nowhere and made play that wee bit harder. Greetings were handed out to Jayson Schembri and Shane “Jockey” Young after both spending approximately three months back in cold, wet and windy Melbourne. Jockey did well getting up to play given he was brutally assaulted by his coffee table during the previous evening. Further questioning on the subject only resulted in the synopsis that details were sketchy. Also a welcome to newcomer Dave Maw from Cambridge, UK. Not too many of our crew at The Swan have studied there! Mind you a few should have Phd’s in talking shite. Farewells were handed out to Alex Field and Frank Riley who are both returning to Oz. Only one division was required and only one player really got the better of the course. Steve Younger saluted the judge, eased down on the line, as his 38 points seen him seven points clear from second placed Lorraine Percy’s 31 points. Three players were tied on the 30 points, with Jayson Schembri winning the countback with an 18 point back nine, which promoted him into third spot. JC Lhoste was fourth and John Coetzee had to be satisfied with fifth. Things are winding up (or is it winding down) for the Tropical golfers. Golfer of the Month, Golfer of the Year, New Year party, and oh yes, some mighty fine golf! Lots of new faces, too. With quite a few golfer/month points at stake, 23 Tropicals made the trek out to Greenwood to play the B and C links, in that order for a change. Greenwood is in good condition! Nice fairways (some weed killer would help), and those famous contoured greens. Many a nice chip to the green rolled off in some oblique angle. A few fairway spots were even a bit muddy. We asked the caddies if it rained recently, but no they just keep it well watered. Remember to do that in a few more months please. Greenwood is a little long but forgiving course, and winning scores are usually respectable. Such was the case. A-Flight (0-22): Tom Herrington (c/h 18) claimed the best score of the day with an inspired 40 points! It seems like Tom is motivated by something. Next came Brian Gabe (18) with a proud 35

Greenwood winners Mick Coghlan (L) and Tom Herrington points. Good back nine Brian, with two birdies! Bob Britton (19) made his long drive (as in car) worth it by claiming 34 points and third place. B-Flight (23+): Mr. Mick “I never win anything” Coghlan (26) was B-Flight champion with an elegant 37 points! Mick has wore out a pair of shoes with all his

recent trips to the podium. Next came Dave Cooper (27) with a fine 36 points, and Reg Cochran (33) can hold his head high with his 35 points. Near pins: Rob Brown (2), Patrick Poussier Long putt: Bob Britton Best front nine by a nonwinner was John Anderson, and back nine Patrick Poussier.

Bunker Boys Golf Colin succeeds around dangerous waters by Peter Grey

A smallish group of 14 golfers headed out to a rare visit to Parichat, a course we have only used once previously on a sound recommendation of our currently injured colleague, Jeremy Dobbs. With the knowledge of the vast amount of water hazards on the course, there was a pensive mood as we gathered on the first tee. The conditions were fine, but with a notable breeze making club selection a little tricky. Back at The Growling Swan bar the lost ball count was discussed just as much as the stableford scores. Greetings were handed out to “Scratch” Handicapper Pieter Zwart and Mark “The Viper” Stapleton. Only one division was required and all top three players returned very good scores. Colin Stielow was the winner with a very fine 41 points, closely followed by John Coetzee on 40 points. John also won 2 NTP’s and a longest putt to cap off a fine day. First timer Pieter Zwart ran a close up third with 39 points.

Results: A Grade (0-36): 1st - Colin Stielow (27) 41 points 2nd - John Coetzee (23) 40 points 3rd - Pieter Zwart (0) 39 points NTP’s: 2 D For 6John Coetzee 11 Dave Maw 14 John Coetzee Longest Putt’s: 9 - John Coetzee 18 - Keith Buchanan

Back at the Growling Swan, we enjoyed chicken fried rice which disappeared rapidly. D-For was let off his chain to collect donations, the Swan’s players and punters are a very generous bunch and keep giving to D-For. All are thanked for their continued contributions to assist the needy children of Pattaya. For serious golfing with a dash of fun (and compulsory sledging), the Growling Swan welcomes golfers of all persuasions. We generally play on Mondays and Thursdays at any one of the fine courses around Pattaya. We also encourage women to play. Contact Peter Grey for bookings or any information on 086 1503 086.

Winner Colin Stielow with runner up Pieter Zwart. Foo was played by Andy Zwarts with Tony Cook observing.

Bowls The Growling Swan also caters to the bowls enthusiasts. Bus transport departs the GS on Sundays at 10 am for open grass bowling at The Retreat. The cost including return bus transport, bowling fees and a hot lunch is less than 400 baht so great value for a day out.

Paul Maw shows the way to go!

Mountain Shadow (white tees) Stableford   A small group of only 14 players for the trip to Mountain Shadow, which was in good condition, with consistent greens despite being on the slow side. A group of what appeared to be poor golfers teed off before our first group but play was brisk with no hold ups. Overall scoring was average with only a few golfers showing any form. First place on the podium went to Tony Scrambler who shot a very respectable 37 points, beating his handicap but was very keen to sell his set of Calloway clubs back at base. With that score perhaps he should reconsider that idea. Second place went to Geoff Parker who is still showing consistent good form after his win last week. One shot further back in third place was Andy Gray on 35 points. Shot of the day went to Geoff Parker who pulled his tee shot left on the first par three, hit a tree beside the green, his ball bounced kindly back on to the green to claim a near pin, perhaps it’s all the pool practice paying off. Results: 1st - Tony Scrambler (13) 37 points 2nd - Geoff Parker (13) 36 points 3rd - Andy Grey (27) 35 points Near Pins: Nial Glover, Geoff Parker, Colin Greig (2)

Greenwood B&C (white tees) Medal Once again a small group of 14 players made the trip up 331 to the Greenwood course. Due to overnight rain, the course was wet in places so the pick, clean, and place rule was applied. The course was in excellent condition with inconsistent greens that had the good putters confused. Today’s medal round was played on B and C courses with a mixed bag of scores, some very respectable and a few not so good. Colin Greig showed that the lower handicap golfers come to the fore in a medal round winning from Frank Quinlan and Neil Carter both a shot back. Our new slow play policy of putting the slower golfers off the back of the field seems to be working as the final four ball came in one and a half holes behind the group in front but fortunately there was no one behind them to complain. Colin Greig won two near pins for the second time this week and people are now looking at ways to induce a bout of gall bladder pain to slow him down a bit. A question that

Silky Oak Country Club Have to say it was a small field (no pun Alex) that became even smaller when we had a pull out as the bus was being loaded.Today’s outing to Silky Oaks GC an enthusiastic, and dare I say it, optimistic group of golfers. Overcast conditions prevailed all day and although rain threatened us we managed to stay dry and play in superb golfing weather on a superb course. This course is still a work in progress at present but most if not all seem to enjoy the experience. Anyway with such a reduced squad we decided to pay all novelties and 1st and 2nd positions only. It was Paul Maw

keeps arising after golf is why do some of the more consistent golfers who win or place week after week somehow never seem to lose any shots on their handicaps but the longer handicap players going through a bad patch are quickly put under review and have their handicaps cut by two to four shots based on their best two scores over the past year? Surely it would be fairer to handicap those players who play more than 70 games with PSC each year on the best 10 out of the last 30, 40 or 50 games and not on only on the best two. Results: 1st - Colin Greig (10) 73 Net 2nd - Frank Quinlan (33) 74 cb 36 back 9 3rd - Neil Carter (14) 74 37 back 9 Near Pins: Colin Greig(2), Nial Glover, Neil Carter. Navy (north & west) Stableford Seventeen keen golfers assembled at the M Club for the trip to the Plutaluang Navy course which is not a favorite of many of the Bunker Boys due to the coarse nature of the grass as well as a few other issues such as the condition of the bunkers which are a resting place for the numerous dogs. On the way into the course, we noted that the South/East courses looked very busy, so we were relieved to find we had been allocated the North/West courses. After a quick check in we proceeded to the tee off area to find a couple of groups of locals waiting to play, however, we didn’t have to wait too long for our first group to commence play. Overall the speed of play was on the slow side which caused frustration for many golfers, as it was difficult to build any kind of momentum. It was noted that one of our group had adopted the Padraig Harrington approach to his game with multiple practice swings before addressing his ball, unfortunately, that’s where the similarity ended. The slow play situation was not helped by a few caddies who showed a distinct lack of interest in proceedings and were always well behind the play. The eventual winner, Andy Grey, playing off 27 when his UK handicap is 14, had many scratching their heads. It can only be put down to the many vagaries of the PSC handicap system. It is also noted that newly returned Nial Glover has won a near pin in every game he has played this week. The race for “Golfer of the Month” has narrowed down to a handful of players with Colin Greig leading the way, closely followed by Mr Consistency himself Geoff Parker. With three games remaining, there is time for Geoff to add to his already burgeoning collection of monthly trophies.  Results: 1st - Andy Grey (27) 39 points 2nd - Michael Brett (20) 36 points 3rd - Colin Greig (10) 33 points Near Pins: Neil Griffin, Nial Glover, Michael Brett, Jimmy Carr

NTP’S 3rd - Dave Maw 6th – John Coetzee 8th – Stu Rifkin 14th – MashiKaneta 16th – Colin Steilow

Worthy winner Paul Maw. that showed a clean pair of heels with a great score of 43 points. John Coetzee found a small enough Piano to hit its target coming in second!

Results: 1st – Paul Maw (15) 43 points 2nd – John Coetzee (23) 39 points

LFP 9th – Dave Maw 18th – John Anderson Back at The Swan we had no welcomes or goodbyes. So we did as all red blooded males

did “We got on the Drink.” So on to next week’s fun and games Thursday Parachat the course that has a reputation of eating balls. Monday Treasure Hill then Thursday we head to Greenwood for the monthly mug! I look forward to seeing you all there.  The GS is a “friendly” golf outlet and caters for and encourages all golfers, young and old, male or female to have a hit on any of our weekly

outings. We generally play Mondays and Thursdays at one of the many fine golf courses in and around Pattaya. Contact Peter Grey if you are interested in playing on 0861 503086 Lawn Bowls The Growling Swan also caters to the bowls enthusiasts. Bus transport departs the GS on Sundays at 10 am when they go to The Retreat.

You & Your Pets

Start the New Year with a Pet

If you’re considering starting 2017 with a new four-legged friend, recognize there are both pluses and minuses attached to such a decision—not to mention a few crucial decisions you need to make before you begin to visit animal shelters or pet stores. For example, do you want a dog or a cat? Adult or newborn? Male or female? Will he or she live indoors or out? Do you want one or more companion? Will you buy or adopt? And so on… The first question—dog or cat?— may be easy to answer depending on whether you’re a dog person or a cat person. The typical dog person usually reflects some of the qualities found in most dogs: high energy, faithful, easy to get along with and extroverted. Just to confuse matters, those qualities are often found in many cat people as well. Cat people generally prefer to spend time on their own, are usually ready to try new things, are curious, unconventional in thinking and actions, and more prone to worry than dog people. So which are you--remembering that these are merely generalities? It’s important to recognize at least some of these traits both in the animals and in yourself, and then select a pet that matches you at least in some respects. Dogs have rightfully earned their reputation as man’s best friend. No matter the size or breed, a dog provides a lifetime of love and loyalty. They are social animals that thrive on human companionship. If you do not have the time or inclination to provide that care and companionship, don’t even consider adopting a dog.

Beyond which, even the best dogs must be trained. They bark, jump up, dig, tug at the leash, or even growl and bite. To curb bad behavior, you need to teach your dog what’s allowed and what’s not. Some dogs are easy to train, while others take more time and practice. If you’re not ready for all that, you might consider adopting a cat or two. Cats are famously independent and low-maintenance. They don't need to be bathed or taken for walks. They can be left on their own for hours at a time—usually asleep. Even though cats like to do their own thing, they still need plenty of love and attention. You’ll have to devote some time each day to playing with your cat, grooming her, or just giving her some TLC. Some cats love to socialize, but others prefer to stay hidden, especially when new people visit. In fact, your friends may not even realize you have a cat! Cats who weren’t around people enough as kittens may be skittish. Even the friendliest cat will jump off your lap and sashay off when he’s had enough of your attention. If you’re looking for a playmate, it doesn’t get much better than a dog. Most breeds are playful and love to be outdoors. A dog can be a great companion for jogging, hiking, or a leisurely stroll in the park. If you’re trying to get in shape, Fido is a fantastic exercise companion. Exercise is as important for dogs as it is for people. Note, too, that all dogs shed at least a little, even breeds thought to be better

for people with allergies. The longer and thicker the coat, the more dog hair you'll find on your clothes, rugs, and furniture. Dogs' coats can also get dirty and matted, so expect to bathe and brush your dog or pay someone to do it for you.

Cats for You is a great and much needed service in our area, but Paul and Sandra point out that adopting a cat or kitten is a longterm commitment with costs such as feeding and veterinary fees. Many adopters find it’s a good idea to adopt two animals so that they can enjoy each others’ company as well as yours. Contact Paul and Sandra on 0852875004 or look at their useful website http://cats4youinpattaya.webs.com/

Grace and kids

For obvious reasons this lovely family of three special cats must go toa new home together. They are indoor cats here so would be great forsomeone who lives in an apartment, they are very friendly but will need a while to get used to a new home and family When it comes to cuddling, cats take the prize. And most cat owners will tell you the sound of a purring cat is deeply soothing. In fact, when researchers looked closely they found stress levels and blood pressure dropped slightly in people who snuggled up to a purring kitty. Then there’s the litter box. It’s essential if you have an indoor cat, and cleaning it every day is mandatory. If you get more than one cat, you’ll need more than one litter box. On top of that, whichever species you choose, you will have to make visits to the vet, make feeding choices, think about neutering your furry friend, buy toys, treats and bedding, and get ready to change your life—mostly for the better.

Some tips to help provide for your pet’s well being.

Boning Up While it’s a good idea to give your dog something to chew on, bones may not be the best choice; they might be too sharp, too brittle and splinter, or too large yet ingested—all of which are risky to your pet. That said, chewing is a normal canine behavior and provides dental benefits. Consider getting your furry friend a safe chew toy. Perhaps something that can be stuffed with food or treats that is nearly indestructible and also provides some of the same benefits as bones do in terms of chewing and mental stimulation. If and when you do give your puppy a bone to chew on, remember to avoid chicken bones; they splinter easily.

Cats for You in Pattaya

Standard raw bones can be dangerous, too, since there is a potential for food-borne disease from the bacteria present on raw meat. Thoroughly cooking bones can prevent food-borne disease, but this may make the bones softer and more likely to splinter.

Going to the Dogs...

Shelley

This lovely young lady is very friendly but a little shy until you get to know her. She had 4 brothers and sisters who went to new homes a long while ago, she was sick when she was small and so missed the opportunity to be chosen. Her mum "Zero" is here as well, they would make a perfect pair for someone.

Zero

Zero is an old timer and spends most of her time chilling outin the garden in some shady spot or other.. She loves her food and will run at a great pace as soon as she hears a tin of tuna being opened !!

Bella and Jacko

This lovely pair Bella and Jacko have been with us for a while now, both are friendly and although they are not brother and sister they are soul mates and we thought it would be nice to re-home them together if possible.

Cat Corner Tip Finger Licking Good

The pug is living proof that God has a sense of humor. ~Margo Kaufman Cats hate the water because their fur does not insulate well when it’s wet. One breed, the Turkish Van, however, likes swimming. Bred in central Asia, its coat has a unique texture that makes it water resistant.

The song “Auld Lang Syne” is sung at the stroke of midnight in almost every English-speaking country in the world to bring in the New Year.

Does your cat make a habit of licking your fingers? There are several possible reasons. The most common is that your cat simply likes the taste of your sweat or hand lotion. On the other hand, it may be because licking in general can be a comforting behavior for your cat; it may be linked to nursing. But if your cat licks you excessively and shows other signs of anxiety, check with your vet.
