UK APPOINTS NEW envoy B rian Davidson is to succeed Mark Kent as the UK ambassador to Thailand in September 2016 after spending much of the interim period learning the Thai language. He is currently the UK’s consulgeneral in Shanghai and was previously in the same position in Guangzhou. He has good contacts with senior Chinese business gurus, a fact of great importance in view of growing trade between China and the UK and Beijing’s increasing diplomatic and political significance throughout pan-Asia. British ambassadors these days are seen as front-line promoters of British economic interests overseas. A Cambridge University law graduate, Mr Davidson joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 1968 as a desk officer for Eastern Europe. However, he undertook Mandarin language training and became a second secretary at the British embassy in Beijing from 1988 to 1992, the first of several Chinese positions. He also served as an analyst on terrorism and international security and held senior positions in the British diplomatic presence in Vilnius and Canberra. In September 2014 Mr Davidson married his
American boyfriend, Scott Chang, in a ceremony officiated by the British ambassador at his residence in Beijing. Same-sex weddings are legal in UK law and can be performed at 22 British consulates worldwide, including mainland China (but not Hong Kong), Russia and Azerbaijan. Neither China nor Thailand recognizes gay marriages and Thailand currently refuses to allow same-sex weddings even in foreign embassies. Some commentators speculate that this could change in the near future. At the time Mr Davidson wrote in the social media, “It means that, finally, our family
and friends can witness the moment we commit to love and cherish each other. I am very proud that the law in the United Kingdom today affords me the same rights as any other British national to be married to whomever I love.” He takes up his position as British ambassador in Bangkok following many changes in the diplomatic world in recent years. Some services, for example the issuing of passports and visas, have been semi-privatized and significant financial cuts imposed by London have found their mark. Thus, as regards the British embassy in Bangkok, many more
decisions about individuals are made in London than used to be the case. Boosting British trade is now seen as taking centre stage. The UK is already Thailand’s biggest trading partner throughout the European Union. Mr Davidson will be expected to maintain and expand that prominence. The new ambassador will also need to take note of the complaints by many British nationals in Thailand about the reduction in front-line, consular services. News Deals in drugs Drugs hidden to help mama in fruit
A married couple have been arrested for possession of quantities of yaba and crystal meth which they allegedly then sold to customers on Jomtien beach. Police searched the room of Suwit Iamyim, 41, and his wife after receiving a tipoff from a reliable source. The couple told investigators they were unemployed and desperately needed cash to support their children locally and a mother upcountry.
An Iranian man was arrested by police in a sting operation after he was suspected of buying illegal substances from other Iranians and re-selling them to tourists. Undercover officers, pretending to be customers, made an appointment in a Jomtien supermarket car park and arrested Reza Rostami, 31, who then led them to his flat where 51.90 grams of crystal meth were discovered in his closet. The alleged drug specialist admitted selling the substances because he had no money and wanted to enjoy himself. He had advised his suppliers to hide the drugs in fruit so as not to arouse suspicion or cause his arrest.
7-Eleven robber strikes again
A man used a knife as a threatening weapon as he held up a 7-Eleven convenience store on the corner of Sukhumvit Road and Soi Toongklom-Talman, and forced staff to hand over 1,500 baht before zooming away on a motorbike. Staff told concerned police later that the man was wearing a green T-shirt
and jeans but was hiding his identity with a crash helmet. Checking the CCTV, investigators said a similar-looking person had been up to mischief in a nearby convenience store in recent weeks. They promised a full effort to try and track down the scoundrel.
Woman dies in temple accident

A tragic incident occurred in front of Putthiwararam temple, Nong Plalai district, when a car struck the temple wall and caused the sudden death of the driver, 25-year-old Apinya Ninsalab. There were no witnesses to the accident and police investigators are assuming that she may inadvertently have dozed off whilst driving. The car appears to have run onto a footpath and then crashed into the outer wall of the temple.
Yet another fatality has occurred on the road near the railway crossing at Moo 6, Tambon Nong Plalai, when a car crashed into a pickup as the traffics lights were out of order. The dead man in the car, driver Meth Chotipanang, 42, had multiple wounds on his head and body. A female passenger was thrown clear and is in the intensive care section of a government hospital. Local people said the area is a notorious blackspot as drivers tend to ignore the flashing yellow lights and do not cross with caution.

Budget helps the poor
Banglamung District Chief Chakorn Kanjanawatta presided over a meeting to decide what to do with a 5-million baht budget which has been allocated by the interior ministry to support those with inadequate incomes. It was decided that the budget
should be distributed in the eight sub-districts of Banglamung to reduce people’s problems, but no final decisions were made about the specific disbursement which will be decided at a subsequent meeting.

News Chonburi Real Estate Association launches at Royal Cliff Grand Hotel Expensive bags At the moment, only superstore Makro in Pattaya has abolished plastic bags in the interests of the environment. You either take your own carriers or walk out with the goods in your trolley. It works well. Now the government is saying that an amendment to the 1992 environment act means that shoppers will need to pay extra if they want plastic bags at a retail outlet. At the moment, shoppers are being encouraged not to expect plastic bags at some stores on the 15th of every month. Plastic bags, which have an indefinitely long life after being discarded, create 2.7 million tonnes of rubbish in the country every year. No date has yet been set for the introduction of the latest move to require you to pay extra for plastic bags. Don Mueang champion Don Mueang international airport is the world’s busiest for low-cost carriers, ahead even of Las Vegas, according to the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation. The Thai airport served 22.5 million passengers in the first eight months of this year, a surge in traffic of 50 percent compared with the same period in 2014. Currently major low-cost airlines operating at Don Mueang include THAI Smile, Nok, Nok Scoot, Thai Air Asia, Thai Air Asia X and Thai Lion Air. More airlines from Japan, China and South Korea are queuing up to join them. Critics say that the airport is short of parking bays and is in dire need of investment in such facilities. Border run restrictions Thai immigration authorities have resurrected a former policy of refusing 15- and 30-day visa-stamp holders to visit the border on a single-day visa run. They are being advised to visit Thai embassies in Vientiane or Phnom Penh, or wherever, to obtain a 60-day tourist visa. However, the latest ruling does not affect holders of 60- or 90- or 365-day visas who have a useable re-entry permission. The ruling does not appear to apply to visitors coming by air provided they spend at least one night away from Thailand. The golden rule at present is to check with the company of your choice, doing border runs by bus, to obtain the most up-to-date information as it applies to you. Don’t forget TIT (This Is Thailand).

Retirement visas Anyone with a retirement visa who has borrowed money from a friend to make up his or her 800,000 baht on a short-term basis or a couple of days or a week, can’t do so in future. According to Bangkok immigration, the cash must have been in your bank personal bank account for two or three months, depending on whether it’s a first or renew application. Your bank account will apparently be scrutinized to check about late payments. Of course, you can still use an embassy letter if you have income abroad for all or part of the 800,000 baht requirement. Every embassy seems to have rather different rules about the financial documentation, if any, they expect to see. Ongoing Jet Skis It just goes on and on. One of the biggest public sores in Pattaya – the Jet Ski scams – continue to plague tourism at a time when it needs every bit of help it can get. There have been committees galore, promises to impose sanctions on evil operators and suggestions that the new Tourist Court would solve the issues. Complaints about the Jet Ski menace have poured in from embassies, especially the Chinese and the Indian, but still no concrete action. The most recent City Hall meeting achieved nothing more than a hope from distraught officials that everyone would cooperate to end the misery. One thing is for sure – the Jet Ski operators are a really influential lobby in our fair city. Flood ally The recent Pattaya floods certainly put the resort city on the front pages of local and international media. Pattaya’s civic officials did manage to divert some of the flood waters on Sukhumvit Road to the 10 square kilometer city centre area into a most effective water basis: the new underpass, now under construction, helped magnificently in diverting unwelcome water into the new (temporary) reservoir. Some lobbyists are already saying what we need are more huge holes rather than new concrete surfaces. It’s an ill-wind that doesn’t blow any good luck, as they say. Value for money Here’s an ad hoc list of good value meal options in Pattaya. Nobody has lobbied us – it’s just recommendations from readers. A really good buffet said to be at Thai Garden Resort, 399 baht, which operates in the evenings with options changing regularly. We also hear good reports about the buffet at Cherry’s out there on Third Road as well as the great spread at the lunchtime buffet at the Hilton Pattaya. In the Jomtien Complex, both Yupins and the Ritz offer excellent meals, with abundant choice for under 400 baht and the drinks are very reasonable too. On Mexican food, you can’t do better than Mike’s, just off Thappraya Road, whilst the best veggie food is likely at Five Stars on South Road, corner of Third Road.

A 21-year-old man shot himself in the head after his father criticized him for not helping his mother in the shop. Anupap Boonrod, the father, told police he saw his son Totsawat playing on his computer instead of helping to create a profit for the family business. He admitted foolishly leaving his gun on the table and, following a
furious row, Totsawat shot himself in a state of anguish. On discovering the sad reality, the young man’s mother threw the gun outside where it was promptly picked up by two youths on a motorbike who promptly fled the scene. Police said they were following up on the two youths but had no description. Tosawat died in hospital.
Mobile phone suspected in fire Police are still investigating the causes of a fire in a Central Road, Pattaya, apartment house which caused 500,000 baht of damage to one room. Concerned locals raised the alarm after noticing that they were choking because of the intense smoke billowing from an open window. Firefighters squirted for almost an hour and assisted residents to vacate the building. Luckily no one was injured. The room’s owner, Narueporn Sermwiset, 44, said she had forgotten to unplug from a socket her mobile phone charger. But investigators said there might have been other electrical faults, such as a stereo still in its socket.

Civic officials hosted a DIY contest for schoolchildren at the Diana Garden Resort, North Pattaya. There were a number of project-based learning strategies to discover and improve critical
thinking and communication skills. Contestants from primary and secondary school sectors played their part and the winners were awarded scholarships to the total value of 200,000 baht.
Help for the disabled
Pattaya City Hall officials donated a quantity of walking sticks, zimmer frames and wheelchairs to members of the community who need assistance with mobility. Deputy
Mayor Wattana Jantanawaranon said the general idea was to make sure everyone got access to social welfare on a more equal footing.
The local branch of the YWCA and school authorities led 80 students to help grow coral reef at Toei Ngam beach in Sattahip. This was part of the environmental protection project and was designed to help the children understand the importance of assisting nature wherever we can in this increasingly polluted world. The YWCA also handed out 146 pairs of glasses to Ban Nongprue School students with eye problems.

Snap Judgment Whither now Thailand? The decision by a junta-nominated committee to vote down the suggested constitution was not unexpected. Even if the document had been the subject of a public referendum early next year, it would have likely failed at that point too. There were too many unpopular clauses in the constitution – an unelected prime minister on occasion, an extremely complex voting system, a special panel which could overrule the elected government of the day – for the regular Thai parties to have swallowed. Members of the Thai junta surely know this was too hot a potato to handle. So we are now back at square one and a new committee will have six months to prepare a new document. Whether this one will include similarly controversial clauses is unknown at this time. However, the new panel is unlikely to repeat all of the recentlydiscarded document lest it frankly appears ridiculous in full public view. It is likely that the complex voting procedures will be amended, at any rate to some extent, and it is to be hoped that the next proposed constitution will be shorter than the last. Written constitutions cannot be a series of detailed laws and penalties but rather a framework in which elected officials can operate. What is clear is that military rule will continue in Thailand until the middle of 2017 with Prime Minister and ex army chief General Prayut Chan-o-cha holding extraordinary powers under what is generally known as Section 44. The Bangkok bombing atrocity apart, the junta has brought order to the streets on an ongoing basis. Most Thais will likely shrug and get on with their daily lives. Real revolutionaries in Thailand have not so far broken cover to campaign against the junta and this situation will likely not end anytime soon. Whatever its faults, the junta has its hand firmly on the tiller when it comes to political opponents, social critics and the like. After all, the events of May 2014 provided the 20th coup in Thai history since 1932, so the military has built up an amazing quantity of experience when the subject is a putsch. Nonetheless, the elephant in the room is the Thai economy. Indeed, some commentators are saying that the junta has manoeuvred to stay in power longer than expected precisely to avoid leaving office whilst the economy is in poor shape. Recent Cabinet changes certainly suggest unease with the current economic condition of Thailand. Exports have fallen 4.9 percent during the first half of 2015 and incomes in rural areas, where 34 million Thais still live, have shrunk. Although the current government seems committed to massive spending on 17 so-called mega-road and railway projects, an infrastructure-related structure such as that will not have a serious impact on domestic demand for years. Real GDP growth has slowed too and the bombing at the Erawan shrine in Bangkok will deter some income-generating tourism, at any rate in the short term. General Prayut has now put in charge of the economy Somkid Jatusripitak, the architect of many progressive economic policies under exiled Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra who still retains great support in rural Thailand because of his populist schemes and incentives. General Prayut’s government also recently set up a national savings fund, which has taken years to come into being, aiming to help up to 30 million Thais without pensions. All eyes are now upon Khun Somkid to see if he can achieve the same sort of turnaround which he managed more than 10 years ago. It won’t be easy this time around as the world situation is very different. In particular China’s economic boom seems to be in trouble. The saying goes that when China sneezes the rest of the world catches a cold. Many commentators are saying that Somkid must be radical and introduce two extremely controversial proposals to jolt the country out of the economic doldrums. These are dramatically to raise rural incomes to spur domestic consumption and aggressively devalue the baht massively to boost exports. But both of these measures would upset the Bangkok elite and the traditional ruling class in Thailand. Thus, they can remember the awesome devaluation of 1997 when many fortunes were wiped out. For a time the whole economy seemed likely to collapse and that discredited the stewardship of the ruling elite. That in turn led to the adoption of a liberal constitution, cancelled by an earlier coup in 2006, and paved the way for the rise of Mr Thaksin, whose policies also weakened the traditional power of the elites. Thus, it is likely that if the current junta wants to be successful in its extended grip on power, it must embrace tough measures that run contrary to the vested interests of the junta’s key allies. That is the central issue for the next two years. Indeed, it is just as much political as it is economic.

In response, the UK government advises travellers and expats to refer to the British embassy Bangkok website which explains in some detail what the embassy can and cannot do for Brits in trouble. In particular, embassy officials cannot
get people out of jail, find them jobs, pay their bills or give or loan them money. As Mr Davidson travels round Thailand and meets British groups, he is likely to hear a great deal about expat expectations in a rapidly changing world.

The Ministry of Public Health in conjunction with the Ministry of Tourism and Sports launched the 2015 Discover Thainess Streets and Markets of Clean Food Good Taste project, aiming at assuring and elevating the good sanitation of all markets and street food vendors in Thailand. The project recommended 17 food streets and 13 fresh markets in the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s (TAT) 12 hidden gems that tourists must not miss when they are in the Kingdom (Lampang, Phetchabun, Nan, Buri Ram, Loei, Samut Songkhram, Ratchaburi, Trat, Chanthaburi, Trang, Chumphon, and Nakhon Si Thammarat).
Over 900 delegates of the Minor Food Group attended the Manager Conference 2015 at the Royal Cliff Hotels Group and Pattaya Exhibition And Convention Hall (PEACH). Minor Food Group’s top executives along with managers from different outlets across Thailand converged at PEACH for three productive days of team building activities, insightful seminars and breakout meeting sessions. Recreational activities promoting camaraderie and encouraging team work on problem solving was also a part of the weekend event.

All food streets and fresh markets listed have passed the Ministry of Public Health’s criteria and been awarded the Clean Food Good Taste logo and the Clean Fresh Market certificate, respectively. In addition, all participating restaurants and food vendors must pass the following criteria: Clean Food Good Taste; no sale of alcoholic drinks and cigarettes; no use
of foam food containers; must provide serving spoons; have clean restrooms, and are equipped with wash basins. The fresh markets must pass the criteria of environmental sanitation, food safety, and consumer protection. Under the 2015 Discover Thainess Streets and Markets of Clean Food Good Taste project, all 12 local health stations in collaboration with
the provincial health offices and the provincial administration offices have organised meetings and seminars, guiding local restaurants and food vendors on the Clean Food Good Taste concept and on using natural materials as food containers. Thus far, restaurants and food vendors of the food street on Khuang Muang Road in Nan are 100 percent free of foam food containers.

Spay and neuter event Pattaya 2015 Thailand’s increasing population of stray animals, based on the data provided by the Department of Livestock, has grown out of control to an estimated 8.6 million dogs. One single dog pair can produce 67,000 new dogs within six years. Within these nine days a team of veterinarians and volunteers will be traveling to different locations to assist temples, shelters and private entities which will also include the Homeless Dog Shelter of Royal Thai Navy Sattahip and Mabprachan Animal Shelter located in Chantaburi to
sterilize and neuter as many dogs and cats as possible to tackle the problem. Since stray animals are an issue for the entire community these two organizations have received astonishing support from local hotels, businesses

Nothing comes between dog lovers and their beloved companions, particularly in the United States where a new survey concluded that nearly four in ten Americans would choose their pet over their partner. Researchers found that 38 percent of dog owners love their dog more than their romantic partner or spouse. Dog owners even admit that they’d be slightly more devastated by their pet running away than they would if their lover ran away. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being completely devastated, a runaway dog averages a 9.0; a breakup with a partner averages 8.8.

We thought our “extreme” city of Pattaya offered just about every kind of leisure opportunity but, as usual it always surprises us by pulling yet another rabbit out of the hat, this time it bleats not grunts or purrs. A few kilometers outside Pattaya (opposite Regents International School Pattaya on Highway 36) sits a pastoral playground named simply Pattaya Sheep Farm. Owned by Chang Siam, it is an idyllic attraction for all the family. Here the sheep roam freely but will come running when a bottle of milk is in the offing. They never seem to tire of being fed the nutritious white liquid and for B.20 it will make for a memorable moment for the kids. Other attractions include donkeys, Shetland ponies, deer, white buffalos, alpacas, a Ferris wheel, a shooting gallery, souvenir shops, an aviary and so much more. A veritable zoo-cum-fair ground-cum-carnival at an admission
charge of only B.50 (little ones under 110 cm have free admittance) it’s a definite ‘baaaagain’. Mick and I visited in the evening to review the rustic restaurant called The Barn Steak House. The restaurant closes at 8 pm so come early. This is a big “barn” seating approximately 400 people inside and out with a big menu to match crossing from east to west with ease. Kids have their own menu featuring nuggets, chicken balls, fingers and sandwiches priced at B.150. Beers and wines are available and we set off our dinner with an excellent glass of Sauvignon Blanc while chatting with the owner, Greg Phatnamrob. Appetisers are diverse offering a light lunch option or a tasty starter. We tasted the baked mussels (B.260) which were big, plump molluscs coated in molten cheese having been toasted under the grill and served with garlic bread. Cheese

2015 FEI World Jumping Challenge The 2015 FEI World Jumping Challenge, Category A (120-130 cm), B (110-120 cm) and C (100-110 cm), was held at the Horseshoe Point Pattaya last September 18-20. This is the 37th year that the challenge has been held worldwide. This competition was created originally to provide less experienced jumping riders to compete in an international level without leaving their respective countries. The FEI World Jumping Challenge made a big contribution to develop jumping, one of the equestrian disciplines in the Olympics, and the most popular worldwide. Up to today, riders who participated in the Challenge are successfully competing in the elite level worldwide. This year, the challenge has introduced a new format â€“ three events organized throughout the year, instead of only one. Horseshoe Point, despite the onslaught of typhoon Vamco, with tons of rain and massive flooding in Pattaya, continued the first event, and had a good result with participants in all three categories. The course plans were designed by Guilherme Jorge (BRA) who will also be the Course Designer in the Rio Olympics 2016. The Ground Juries were Pakin Chamswat (THA), Phutthihat Sethchaivut (THA) and Zherwin Acosta, DVM (PHI). The Final of the World Jumping Challenge 2015 will be in Bulgaria; the qualifications for the final will be based on the results of Category A. The Category A in Thailand will also be used as a qualifier for the shortlist of the THA National Team for Show Jumping.

Caesar salads come with options of grilled salmon or chicken and are extremely popular plates throughout the day as are the soups (creamed corn, mushroom or spinach), but starting at only B.220 the pasta dishes are bestsellers, especially their signature seafood with spicy sauce. Ours came bursting with flavours and topped with two sizeable prawns. Mix and match your own pasta dishes with a choice of spaghetti, penne, linguine or fettuccine. The Barn Steak House specialises in premier cuts of Australian prime beef. Weighing in at 250 grams the tenderloin tops the list at B.630 closely followed by sirloin, rib eye and a hearty serving of T-bone with a weight of 400 grams for the carnivorous trencherman. We chose the Barn lamb burger which was a truly delicious ground patty of the lamb homemade in the Barn’s style. Other lamb dishes include the Barn Penang or Massaman curry which again we tasted and liked. Accompanied by roti bread it was an excellent bowl of profound aromatic spiciness complimented by the crispy flat bread just screaming out to be dunked into its rich goodness. So much more on this menu from grilled pork ribs, through roast chicken (B.270), a mixed sausage platter, grilled grouper and a whole gamut of gourmet Thai food featuring a spicy salmon salad with chili paste or a selection of green curries and Tom Yam soups plus fried rice dishes. It was now time for desserts and they are scrumptious in the extreme from banana split to crème brulee, to crepes, panna cotta and gorgeous rich chocolate brownies which with a dollop of creamy ice cream would put the finishing touch on any fun day out with the family. Drifters coordinates are posted at the neighbouring marina and yacht club which periodically results in flotillas of sailing boats (The Drifter Dash) descending on their sandy doorstep to enjoy the hearty victuals and many cold ones before heading back to the club. What’s on the menu? It all started with pizzas and they are undoubtedly still the bestsellers. We followed this with a Buffalo Mozzarella and a fresh tomato salad (B.150), and a substantial serving of chilli cheese fries. Creamy cheese makes such good friends with smoked salmon and here they are joined by soft sweet crab meat with a touch of salinity – it was a winning combination. Since the launching of Weight Watchers 52 years ago in Brooklyn, New York, the concept has expanded around the world, has been replicated by hundreds of competing organizations, and has attracted millions of overweight and obese women and men seeking to shed extra pounds through such support systems. But now a study published in the American Journal of Public Health suggests that most obese people who don’t get some kind of weight-loss surgery will never achieve a “normal” weight. (The Centers for Disease Control classify a BMI of between 25 and 29.9 as “overweight,” anything above that as obese.) Data for 76,704 obese men and 99,791 obese women from the United Kingdom were analyzed over the course of nine years, and researchers found that the annual probability of reaching a normal weight was just 1 in 210 for obese men and 1 in 124 for obese women (obese = 30.0–34.9 BMI).
For those with morbid obesity (BMI = 40.0–44.9), those odds decreased to 1 in 1,290 for men and 1 in 677 for women. In contrast, a systematic review conducted last year found that at 12 months, Weight Watchers was associated with 2.6 percent more weight loss than those who were in a control group. Weight Watchers programs use a science-driven approach to help participants lose weight by forming helpful habits, eating smarter, getting more exercise and providing support.
Need help with your bags? Have you recently begun to notice that you have bags under your eyes? It’s a common problem and there are some common solutions. Puffy eyes are often brought on by the build-up of water, often stemming from allergies, a cold or a sinus infection. You might also consider trying a neti pot to irrigate your nasal cavity. (The device looks like a small teapot.) It can help relieve fluid buildup caused by allergies, sinus congestion, or a cold. A third option is to switch your sleeping position. Thanks to gravity, sleeping on your side or stomach can encourage fluids to collect under your eyes. If you're a side sleeper, you may notice a heavier bag on the side you sleep on. Try sleeping on your back and add an extra pillow under your head.
Other everyday habits including rubbing your eyes frequently, going to bed with makeup on, and excessive drinking, can contribute to under-eye bags, too, because of irritation or dehydration. Eye bags are common and usually not related to your health. But if your bags appear suddenly and you're not suffering from allergies, a sinus infection, or a cold—and they don't improve when you try the lifestyle steps mentioned above—see your doctor; some thyroid or kidney problems can cause under-eye fluid retention.

10th Thailand Property Awards crowns the Kingdom’s best developers Marking its first decade as an institution that helped put Thai real estate on the radar, the Thailand Property Awards 2015 honoured the Winners and Highly Commended in an exclusive, black-tie awards gala held at the prestigious Plaza Athenee Bangkok (a Royal Meridien hotel). Established and up-and-coming developers in Bangkok, Phuket, Hua Hin, Chiang Mai, Khao Yai, Samui and Eastern Seaboard vied for a total of 29 categories over three sections: Developer, Development and Design. Three-time nominee SC Asset Corporation PLC claimed the biggest award of the evening for Best Developer, beating ‘MQDC’ Magnolia Quality Development Corporation Limited, which received a Highly Commended certificate in the same category and was also presented a Special Recognition in Corporate Social Responsibility. Completing at least 50 successful projects in the last five years that are focused on creating sustainable and “lively neighbourhoods”, SC Asset was a shoo-in for the year’s top honour, as well as for the Best Housing Development (Bangkok) award, which was given to its Granada Pinklao project that features practical design and
friendly amenities. The Chatuchak-based developer also became a Highly Commended winner in the Best Affordable Condo Development (Bangkok) for its Centric Tiwanon Station project. Another three-time nominee Absolute World Group emerged victorious, this time in the Best Boutique Developer category. Considered one of the current leaders of the vacation club ownership industry in Thailand, the company is also known and respected for building an impressive boutique collection of forward-thinking resorts with an environmentally-conscious approach. The firm also bagged two Highly Commended honours for current developments on Phuket and Samui. It was also an exciting evening for Minor International PLC, which was the most nominated developer of this year with five nods for the company and its subsidiaries. The group won the judges’ approval for
Best Residential Interior Design for The Residences by Anantara, a project undertaken by its Hua Hin Resort Co., Ltd. unit, and also took home four Highly Commended certificates: two in Design, and one each for villa and hotel developments. In a departure from the various award categories, the evening held a moment to honour Minor International’s founder, CEO and chairman, WIlliam “Bill” E. Heinecke, who was presented the Real Estate Personality of the Decade award by the editors of Property Report, Ensign Media’s industryleading publication, for being a shining example of a true leader in Thai luxury real estate. It was the only award not selected by the independent panel of judges.
While the Thai market has been affected by political tension and changes, a fluctuating economy, and concerns of a potential bubble in the last few quarters, the industry has remained solid, particularly the high-end, luxury, villa and retail segments in the Thai capital. Bangkok-focused Pruksa Real Estate Public Company Limited certainly has had a great year. The developer received two highly coveted development awards – Best Luxury Condo Development (Bangkok) for Ivy Ampio, and Best Affordable Condo Development (Bangkok) for Chapter One: The Campus Kaset – as well as one ‘Best of the Best’ award for Best Condo Development (Thailand), which went to Ivy Ampio.

Business News Facebook opens office in Thailand Facebook celebrated another milestone in Southeast Asia with the official opening of its Thailand office. “The opening of this office builds upon our commitment to Thailand and reiterates our investment in supporting the growth of Thai businesses, and making it easier for consumers to connect with each other and businesses in more meaningful ways,” said Dan Neary, vice president, Asia Pacific, Facebook. “With a small team now based in Thailand, we are strengthening the support we offer partners, and delivering on our mission to make the world more open and connected.” Thais are the most avid users of social networks in Southeast Asia, spending an average of 2 hours and 35 minutes per day on Facebook. In Thailand there are more than 34 million people on Facebook who use the platform regularly every month and more than 94 percent of people that come
back to Facebook every month in Thailand do so on mobile (source: Facebook data, as of June 2015). Facebook’s popularity, coupled with a projected increment for advertising spending on digital media to reach 10 billion baht in 2015, makes the platform a valuable tool for businesses wishing to make an impactful connection with Thais. Locally, 70 percent of Thais are connected to at least one SME Page on Facebook, while over 1.16 million businesses have an active Page on the social media platform. Added Neary, “Prior to us having an office here in Thailand, we had always supported Thai businesses and consumers through our regional team based in Singapore. We are able to do that better now with a small team on the ground here in Thailand. Our goal is to help Thai businesses get more value from being on
Facebook, and also to help people use Facebook to stay connected with friends and family.” In addition to announcing the opening of its office in Thailand, Facebook also announced the availability of Instagram ads in Thailand. With 7.1 monthly actives on Instagram in Thailand (as of June 2015), the availability of Instagram ads provide a new suite of ad formats on a self-serve basis. From September 2015, the Instagram community in Thailand will gradually see ads appear from launch partners including Air Asia (@airasiathailand), dtac (@dtac), Lazada (@lazada_th), Tesco Lotus (@ tescolotus) and Zalora (@zalorathailand). Through technology that leverages the best of Facebook's ads infrastructure, it's now easy for advertisers on Instagram to target their message more effectively and reach people based on what they care about.

Thai market continues to be dominated by local investors Supported by international investors continuing to diversify their real estate portfolios, Asia Pacific has recorded a steady flow of international capital, with investment turnover increasing by 9 percent year-on-year to US$13 billion in H1 2015. CBRE’s Asia Pacific Investment Guide 2015 provides a comprehensive overview of the investment terms, foreign ownership restrictions and key investment features of 15 markets. Richard Kirke, managing director, CBRE Capital Markets Asia Pacific, said, “Asia Pacific’s real estate is continuing to demonstrate strong, sustained fundamentals. Relative to the volatility being witnessed in global equity markets, APAC real estate provides investors with superior risk-adjusted returns.” Diverging Approaches: Deregulation and Curbs Real estate-related levies are playing a larger role in selected markets with the aim of curbing speculative investor activity. A number of markets have already imposed preventive measures: In 2013, Singapore introduced a more rigorous debt servicing ratio while Hong Kong doubled the stamp duty on foreign property investments. Other markets are also planning to
introduce new tax measures. Taiwan has announced a new capital gains tax, effective January 1, 2016. The current luxury tax will be abolished and replaced with the capital gains tax, while China’s value added tax (VAT) will be widened to encompass a broader range of real estaterelated services. Ada Choi, senior director, CBRE Research Asia Pacific, said, “In recent years, country governments have increased taxation and tightened lending on property transactions as part of wider cooling measures in domestic markets. Despite the higher financial burden on real estate investment, the investment demand in Asia Pacific remains high. These policies are therefore expected to largely remain in place.” “We’re also seeing more investors showing a preference for core assets— which require lower leverage ratios—and being backed by international and regional institutional capital. As a result, they are less affected by the limitations on leveraging and the higher transaction costs which are aimed at dampening speculation,” Choi added. Conversely, a number of emerging economies, particularly in the Southeast
Asian region, have relaxed restrictions on foreign direct investments in a bid to attract overseas capital to boost domestic growth. Deregulation measures include permitting full foreign ownership of properties in markets like Vietnam and full ownership of luxury residential condominiums in Indonesia, whereas India and China are allowing for more flexible investment policies such as lowering minimum capital requirements and the easing of exit norms. The Thai market continues to be dominated by local investors because of the restrictions on foreign ownership, specifically the prohibition on foreign entities owning land. "At a developer level, foreign investment is restricted to bona fide joint ventures such as these agreed between Mitsui Fudosan and Ananda Development Public Co., Ltd. along with Mitsubishi Estate and AP (Thailand) Public Co., Ltd. to develop condominiums,” said James Pitchon, executive director – head of Research, CBRE Thailand. Individual foreign investors can buy up to 49 percent in area terms of a condominium development, but the requirement that all funds must come in from overseas as foreign currency
(effectively preventing foreign investors from borrowing locally) remains in place. “In addition to the ongoing urbanization and rapidly expanding middle class in many emerging economies, the policy shift of some governments to more open foreign investment policies sends a clear and positive signal to international investors. Given these additional incentives, coupled with many global funds still being relatively underweight in APAC, it is not
surprising that capital seeking real estate is at record levels,” said Kirke. With more forthcoming relaxation measures expected, it is anticipated that there will be a notable reduction of barriers to market entry for foreign direct investments in the coming years. Nevertheless, investors should be mindful of domestic restrictions on capital repatriation and currency volatility and plan accordingly.
Thailand projecting turnaround in visitor arrivals from Russia by Tourism Authority of Thailand, www.TATnews.org The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) proceeded normally with its participation in the International Russian Travel Market-Leisure (OTDYKH-Leisure) trade show as part of its ongoing objective to maintain a high marketing profile across all source markets. The Thai delegation to the OTDYKHLeisure, the most important travel trade event in the Russian market and CIS countries, was led by H.E. Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, minister of Tourism and Sports. TAT has been participating regularly in the show since 1995. It has played a major role in helping make Russia one of Thailand’s top 10 sources of visitor arrivals. The trade delegation included over 14 Thai exhibitors representing hotels, tour operators and travel-related agencies. The Thai Pavilion this year bore the “2015 Discover Thainess” marketing theme with interesting activities organised alongside including the Thai Fight for the Thailand Fan Club at the Ray Arena, which was designed to tap the growing Russian interest in Muay Thai boxing. TAT also celebrated its being awarded as the ‘Most Active’ national tourism organisation (NTO) at the OTDYKHLeisure. There are only two NTOs receiving this award, another is Dubai’s Department
of Tourism and Commerce Marketing, United Arab Emirates. Russia is Thailand’s largest source of visitor arrivals from Europe. It is also one of six countries that contributes more than 1 million annual arrivals, and one of only two countries that generates more female visitors than males. In 2006, Russian visitor arrivals totalled 187,658. By 2014, this number had surged to 1.6 million Russian visitors. In January-July 2015, Russian visitors to Thailand totalled 506,071. Thailand, like many other destinations popular with Russian visitors, is feeling the impact of the decline in Russian outbound travellers. However, TAT is confident that the Russian economy will soon be back on track. This year, Thailand is projecting between 900,000 to 1 million Russian visitors. One reason for this projected turnaround is the outcome from the April 2015 visit to Thailand by Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev. The visit was explicitly designed to boost bilateral trade, economic and investment between Russia and Thailand, which is Russia’s biggest trading partner in ASEAN. The two countries agreed to increase the trade turnover up to US$10 billion by 2020. Russia is looking to increase its import of fruits and vegetables, meat and
fish products from Thailand. At the same time, Russian companies have offered to help Thailand with the implementation of major infrastructure projects, especially in the railways sector. The two countries also signed a tourism cooperation agreement covering the period 2015-2017. The Thai government has welcomed Russia’s plan to establish a cultural centre in Bangkok. This year, TAT launched a Russian version of its smartphone application “The Maze”. This app is designed to match the travel preferences of each individual with the appropriate choice of products, services and destinations in Thailand. It is available for download from the website http:// tourismthailand.ru/maze/ Road shows and marketing workshops will also be conducted in major Russian cities. This is in addition to the most recent marketing event, “The Romantic Thailand Campaign”, which was launched in May 2015. For the first time, 122 couples from Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Azerbaijan and Georgia took part in this online competition. Six winning couples were hosted to experience a fabulous Thai wedding ceremony and honeymoon between July 28 and August 9, 2015. The entire trip through the best tourism attractions of Bangkok and Phuket was massively covered via social media in a
unique new format of an online show. Russians can obtain a 30-day visa-free facility at major international Thai border checkpoints. As of September 2015, there are seven direct scheduled flights per week between Bangkok and Moscow operated by Aeroflot Russia Airlines. In addition, numerous scheduled and charter flights operate between major cities in Russia, the CIS countries and Thailand. At the OTDYKH-Leisure, the Russian trade was informed about the
agreement to further develop the U-TapaoRayong-Pattaya International Airport for commercial purposes. The first phase includes a new passenger terminal, which is expected to be completed in June 2016 and capable of handling 3 million passengers a year. This will help Thailand better handle the growing demand by scheduled and charter flights from Russia to land directly at the U-Tapao-Rayong-Pattaya International Airport.

Thai Inheritance Law What happens to my assets in Thailand if I don’t have a last will and testament? In Thailand, when a person dies without a last will and testament, the intestate’s assets must be distributed in accordance with the law. As stipulated in the Civil and Commercial Code Section 1629, there are six classes of statutory heirs in Thailand. Each class is entitled to inherit in the following order: 1. descendants 2. parents 3. brothers and sisters of full blood 4. brothers and sisters of half blood 5. grandfathers and grandmothers 6. uncles and aunts The right of a surviving spouse to share in the estate of a deceased spouse arises automatically from marital status. Spouses who are under separation do not lose the right of inheritance to one another as long as divorce between them has not been granted according to law. Ordinances awarding such rights on a surviving spouse make the spouse a statutory heir. Before any distribution of the estate to the relatives, half of the estate (community property or in Thai, sin somros) will belong to the spouse, if any, and the other half will be distributed accordingly. Can a foreigner acquire a free-hold condominium by inheritance? A foreigner who acquires a condominium unit by inheritance, either as a legal heir under a last will and testament or as a statutory heir, shall acquire the property ownership if the condominium unit is within the foreign quota and the foreigner qualifies for ownership. Otherwise, it is required by law that the foreigner shall dispose of the unit within one year from the date of acquisition. If it is not disposed of within such period of time, the Director-General of Land Department shall have the power to sell the condominium unit on the foreigner’s behalf. Can a foreigner acquire a land by inheritance? Foreigners are not allowed to own or inherit land in Thailand. Any foreigner who inherits land must dispose of the land within one year as prescribed by the Director-General of Land Department. If such time period elapses, the Director-General shall have power to dispose of such land. Can a leasehold property be inherited? A major disadvantage of lease in Thailand is that the contract and the right of possession is terminated upon death of the lessee and is not automatically transferable by inheritance. Although the lease agreement must include a succession clause, this does not offer full legal guarantee for the lessee’s heirs. How are debts due by the estate managed? The creditors of an estate are entitled to be paid

only out of the property of the estate. Debts due by the estate shall be paid in the following order and in accordance with the provisions of the Thailand Civil and Commercial Code concerning preferential rights: 1. expenses incurred for the common benefit of the estate 2. expenses incurred for the funeral of the deceased 3. taxes and rates due by the estate 4. wages due by the deceased to any clerk, servant or workman 5. supplies of daily necessities made to the deceased 6. remuneration for the administrator Unless otherwise provided by the deceased or by law, the property of the deceased shall be appropriated to the payment of debts in the following order: 1. property other than immovable property 2. immovable property expressly appropriated to that purpose by will, if any 3. immovable property to which the statutory heirs are entitled as such 4. immovable property bequeathed to a person upon the condition that he shall pay the debts of the deceased 5. immovable property bequeathed under general title 6. any specific property bequeathed under a particular title Any property appropriated under the foregoing provisions shall be sold by way of public auction, but any heir may prevent such sale by paying, to the extent required for the satisfaction of the creditors, the value of the whole or part of the property as may be determined by an appraiser appointed by the court. A statutory heir or a legatee under a general title is not bound to execute legacies under a particular title for more than the amount of property received by him. The administrator is not bound to deliver the estate or any part thereof to the heirs before one year has elapsed from deceased’s date of death, unless all the known creditors of the estate and legatees have been satisfied by the performance and distribution.
As HMRC in the UK keep nibbling at the edges of the QROPS regime, it is clear that the tighter and more difficult they and the existing schemes can make it to transfer your money, the better. Since its introduction, as an attractive alternative for expatriates, the rules have just become tougher and tougher for those of us who benefit from taking their hard-earned pension pot out of the hands of the UK taxman. It’s not only the rules and regulations that have hardened; many UK providers of individuals’ existing pension holdings have increasingly tried almost anything to delay moving the pension holders’ money out of their coffers. Many regularly say they will only send out information by post, rather than email or fax, even though there are several perfectly ‘secure email’ systems available; it’s ridiculous. By post to the far reaches of Southeast Asia from the UK can take 10 to 14 days – all time the client’s money remains in their bank account not the beneficiary’s! We have now reached the conclusion that ‘Customer Service’ Departments are a euphemism for NO SERVICE. The corporates and institutions that use these delaying tactics seem to think it is their money. The truth is that if you delay several hundred, or thousands of transfers for a number of months, that’s a hefty chunk of interest these providers are receiving, even at today’s rates. Also, every year the UK budget comes around, it’s no longer a matter of ‘will he make changes to pensions and QROPS, in particular, it’s a virtual certainty that some bureaucratic stumbling block, or benefit entitlement will be negatively affected. Those of you with pension pots in more than one scheme can often expect months of delays before starting to reap the benefits of a QROPS. Keep in mind, all the time your money remains in a UK scheme, the following will apply: How can your If you die pension be before age 75 passed on? Lump sum

It’s important to remember that if your funds are in a UK scheme and are free of income tax at the time of your death, inheritance tax will still be levied above the then current thresholds at, currently, 40 percent unless 10 percent of a net chargeable estate is left to charity, then a reduced rate of 36 percent applies. UK non-residents’ funds transferred into a QROPS are exempt from both UK income tax and inheritance tax on death, able to leave their fund intact for dependants. Our advice, to those of you that are considering moving your pensionfund into a QROPS, is think about doing it sooner rather than later. Importantly, changes to benefits and/or other regulations surrounding QROPS only affect new members and are not imposed retroactively. Thailand Property Awards 2015 Eastern Seaboard Winners! This year’s Thailand Property Awards once again proved to be another spectacular event with the gala dinner well attended by the country’s real estate elite. We saw another sold out event of more than 500 guests, including a well-represented Eastern Seaboard contingency. All of the leading real estate agents, property developers, interior designers and architects from throughout the nation's housing, condominium, commercial and hospitality industries were in attendance at the Athenee Crystal Hall, Plaza Athenee Bangkok ‘A Royal Meridian’ on Wednesday September 16. The evening began with an entertaining reception, where you could enjoy fine wines and appetizers while mixing with the industry elite, including most of the top developers, designers and hoteliers in Thai real estate. Following a four-course dinner which featured a classical music sextet, the gala awards presentation began. Without question these highly regarded and much sought-after awards once again showed themselves to be the highest symbol of achievement that a company or an individual can aspire to in Thailand’s residential real estate industry. This year’s event was hailed as an outstanding success, owing to the efforts of its organizer, Terry Blackburn, CEO

Trust me, I didn’t get an ‘F’ grade for French because I possessed a profound appreciation of irony whilst doing my GCSE’s at 16 years old. When changes were made to the British National Curriculum recently, leading to the publication of a new curriculum in September 2014 there were some notable directives on how teachers are to approach literacy teaching from the beginnings of Key Stage One onwards. One stand-out theme which has been given
prominence in the British media, as it was eluded to many times in the new Curriculum document, is the drive for

Students at Garden International School (GIS) celebrated Roald Dahl Day by hunting for a golden ticket. In true Willy Wonka-style, students bought 1,000 bars of chocolate, in the hope that their one would contain a lucky ticket. If they found one of the six golden tickets, they were rewarded with a Roald Dahl book, chocolate and other prizes. Around 10,000 baht was raised, which will go to a local charity. a more deliberate focus on explicit grammar, punctuation and spelling teaching. This has led some commentators to interpret such changes as an attack on regionalised, colloquial and ethnic patois with a subsequent elevation of middle-class, formalized language. That being said, based on my experience with teaching ESL (English as a Second Language) I feel confident that a more structured approach to language teaching will be beneficial to children studying English in Thailand. Over the past six years, while teaching English-based
curriculums in Thailand, I’ve noticed that, academic intelligence aside, those children with English-speaking parents assimilate rudimentary spoken and written grammar more smoothly and more quickly that those with parents who can’t or don’t use spoken English regularly whilst communicating with their children at home. The lack of recreational reinforcement for many ESL learners means that by the age of 10, these students can easily be as far as two or more years behind in terms of syntax, vocabulary development, conversational skills and reading fluency compared to those similar children, of similar academic intelligence who hear significantly more English in their home environment. In summary, kids that hear a language spoken correctly on a regular basic learn that language more quickly and more accurately than those denied this opportunity. Proverbially speaking, ‘practice makes perfect’, so for those children that don’t receive consistent reinforcement in their foreign language studies, I’m happy to support the idea of young children having more explicit reinforcement
regarding English language structures at school. For those children who have limited access to spoken English and grammatical tuition, the lack of opportunity to overhear and mimic accurate examples of English grammatical structures may lead children to mimic poorer interpretations that they hear ambiently in social scenarios. Or even worse, children might have no recourse but to revert to learning English by reading the local public signs. Have a grammatically correct 2015. Unless your dog is properly trained, he not only will side-track you along your route, he also will dictate the speed at which you walk and, more distressingly, can cause you to trip and fall. Tens of thousands of dog owners start out for a stroll with Fido only to end up in a hospital emergency room because their pets have pushed them over, pulled them down, or caused them get tangled up in the leash and tumble to the ground. The best way to avoid such accidents is through obedience training. It’s fun for your dog and prudent for you. On the topic of walking your dog, keep in mind that on most days in Pattaya the temperature averages about 30 degrees or higher, and with the sun beating down on the ground, streets and sidewalks can reach

a sizzling 56 degrees. That’s hot enough to cook an egg in five minutes. And it can do the same to your dog’s sensitive foot pads. Asphalt or concrete temperatures of 60 or above are hot enough to cause burns, permanent damage and scarring after just one minute of contact. Beyond which, the heat reflected from such hot footpaths, pavement and sand can also elevate your pet’s body temperature and increase the risk of deadly heatstroke. If you wouldn’t put your dog in a frying pan, please don’t make him or her walk on hot pavement. Always test the pavement with your hand before setting out (if it’s too hot for you to touch it is too hot for Spot). Take your walk early in the morning or after sunset when it’s cooler; carry water and take frequent breaks.

This cute kitten was rescued along with her mum and three brothers and sisters from the roof space of an apartment building. We don't really know her character just yet as she has only been here for a day or two but she does like lots of cuddles.
This is another of the four rescued kittens; this one is camera shy and would rather be stuffing her face than posing for a photo. Dottie also loves to be picked up and cuddled too. There are two more cuties in this family so be quick to come and reserve one.
This lovely Tabby boy was rescued from a local market: he had an injured leg and was limping badly. He was found to have a nasty bite wound which was treated with antibiotics. He is now fit as a fiddle and runs about the place like a puss possessed.

Ambassadorial visit The Irish tricolour was flying outside the Sukhumvit Road offices of the Father Ray Foundation on Friday, September 25, to welcome His Excellency Brendan Rogers, the first resident ambassador of Ireland to the Kingdom of Thailand. Upon his arrival at the Foundation, the ambassador was welcomed by Father Peter Pattarapong and Brother Denis Gervais, president and vice president of the Foundation respectively. Also there to welcome the ambassador was a large group of toddlers from the Father Ray Day Care Center, all dressed in traditional Thai costume and enthusiastically waving the flags of Ireland and Thailand, as well as a sizeable contingent from the local Irish community. Accompanied by Deputy Ambassador Alan Farrelly, Ambassador Rogers was making his first official visit to the Father Ray Foundation, in particular to the Redemptorist Vocational School for People with

The ambassador spent some time meeting more than 200 students at the school, impressing them with his knowledge of the Thai language. He also met with Meunchai Kaewna, a former student who was born with no arms and who has overcome many obstacles to become a teacher of TV repair at the school.

Ascott, CapitaLand Hope Foundation and iCare Thailand Foundation create a brighter future for children in Chiang Rai CapitaLand Limited’s wholly owned serviced residence business unit, The Ascott Limited (Ascott), and the Group’s philanthropic arm, CapitaLand Hope Foundation (CHF), organised the first CapitaLand International Volunteer Expedition to Chiang Rai province. The expedition reached out to over 500 students of Doi Wiangpha Pittaya School through the iCare Thailand Foundation. Close to 50 volunteers from CapitaLand, including staff from Ascott, helped improve the rural school’s facilities to create a better study environment and brighter
future for the students. The volunteers comprised senior management and staff from Thailand as well as various countries such as China, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Vietnam. Doi Wiangpha Pittaya School is a Thai government school located within the Golden Triangle area of Northern Thailand, a 10-hour drive from central Bangkok. The school provides education to over 500 children from kindergarten up to 9th Grade, with 50 children living on the school premises. Aside from painting the school’s exterior and
refurbishing the playground, amongst other tasks, to upgrade the school, the volunteers conducted a specially designed lesson, named the “CapitaLand Little Architect Programme”, to enable the children to learn building construction concepts in a simple, yet fun way. The volunteers also brought cheer and bonded with the children through a wide array of interactive activities such as team sports as well as arts and craft. To mark the start of a new school semester in a meaningful way, all students received a surprise gift of CapitaLand schoolbags, stationery and
school shoes. This is part of the “My Schoolbag” programme supported by CHF that has been benefiting underprivileged children since 2009. Through #100KHopeHours, CHF seeks to rally the public to volunteer their time, skills and effort for charity, highlighting the message that everyone can contribute in different ways to benefit the community. Local Sports PSC Tropical Golf Fitz Club holds 6th Tennis Tournament from BJ’s by Derek Brook
Fitz Club – Racquets, Health & Fitness staged the 6th Tennis Tournament garnering over 30 players from around Thailand. Keen tennis players gathered at Royal Cliff’s fitness centre as Antonello Passa, general manager of the Royal Cliff Hotels Group, along with Fitz Club’s team welcomed participants and supporters to the event. The tournament included two types of matches: Singles
Open and Singles 45+. The matches adopted the roundrobin system which allowed competitors the chance to play several matches against friendly opponents. Towards the end of the tournament, Tos Peung-Rassamee, winner of the Singles Open, and Niphit Sricharoen, winner of the Singles 45+, were each presented with trophies and prizes including 5,000 baht in cash and BBQ buffet dinner vouchers for two.
Winners relaxing Green Valley (Stableford) We’ve been to this course a few times over the years and it has always been a pleasure to play. I remember walking down the road from the ‘old clubhouse’ with old type spikes clumping down the road and teeing off on what is now the second hole. There have been a few changes over the years, many that have not been an improvement in my view, but we have still been left with a course that ranks with the best in the area. The course is a fairly open course and thus the wind always seems to be there as it was on this day, and in general the course was in good condition with maybe the fairways a bit spongy. We were away on time and the round progressed well although with a spongy fairway we had little run and
the course seemed to play long. Amazing how the course seems to get longer as we get older. Mind the rain held off and we had a good walk around. Soon showered it was a quick bite in one of the fine restaurants they have here, before into cars and back to BJ’s. Most of the players usually eat at BJ’s when we get back but that usually takes little time and it was soon into the results. The winner on the day was Tom Cotton with a fine 39 points on countback over Mashi Kanata in second. In third was Andre Van Dyk with 37 points on countback over Graham Buckingham. Martin Todd makes a statement! Twenty-one players arrived at The Growling Swan with an appointment to take the trip up Highway 331 and take on the very popular Greenwood GC. Cannot report what took place on the buses, as I did not make the trip myself. But I am sure it was the usual banter of what players were anticipating from this outing. Judging by the way that Brad Todd was sent off by Russell Calcutt I would hazard a guess he would have slept the entire trip. We played A and B nines, off the White tees and at 6,200 yards (approx.), with no run it made it a tough day for all. Of course, as usual the tricky par 5s sorted many out. Course was in good condition and as always the greens were playing on the tricky side.
The weather was warm with no rain in sight but, as the day got longer the lack of breeze made it somewhat uncomfortable. On the return to The Swan we greeted many red faces and that had nothing to do with scores, more to do with lack of sunblock. Martin was on the day with his trip to Japan not affecting his golf, second was Jim Groves taking that position (on countback) from Steve Jones who looked to have his putter working. After some overnight rain we expected Pattana to be somewhat wet and we headed off from the Phantom Bar a few minutes before our scheduled 8:30 am departure time. With a last minute withdrawal due to illness we were left with three groups and arrived at the course after a 47-minute drive. We were granted our request to play the A nine so A and
B it was and after presenting ourselves at the A1 tee we had to wait for a couple of groups to tee off but we managed to get our first group away right on time at 10 am. The groups ahead were playing the fourperson scramble format which we thought would be fairly quick but we soon found out it was the opposite and we were waiting on almost every shot.
The weather was great, not too hot with a nice breeze and the golf course was in very good condition although quite wet after the overnight rain but we declared before the start that it was to be preferred lies on the fairways. Story of the week was the double-header from visiting Paul Bolton as another 38-pointer took him to the top for a great week of golf. It had been pretty continuous rain for the last 48 hours and the decision was made not to play in such wet conditions. In the end it was a mistake as the skies began to clear and by the afternoon it was dry and gorgeous. It was such a shame as we had 36 guys signed up to play today; we will reschedule in October. Leo, John and monkey business! The Growling Swan welcomed back Fred Cuypers, Keith Buchanan and Alan Taylor, whilst Kevin Waycott’s alter ego, Leo, rocked up in garish, non-matching iridescence. Leo deservedly endured the mocking from the remaining 23 starters. Several of our stalwarts have headed to Japan for a golfing smorgasbord, so our field of 24 was fantastic. Our destination was Bangpra, the affectionately named ‘monkey course’ and the day turned out to be most eventful. Firstly, there was an unfortunate tee-time mix up and our six groups had to wait some 45 minutes for other groups to clear and then on-course the monkeys proved to be prevalent, extremely brazen and aggressive. Leo had his day’s fruit portions nicked early on; however, his caddy was distraught after losing her mobile phone. Brad Todd lost his durries and dutifully offered a light to the perpetrator, but was
rudely ignored. Be warned, they are very brazen and the resident sleeping dogs are outnumbered! We played off the white tees. Monkeys aside, the course proved to be in excellent condition and the undulating slick greens were immaculate. The course, with minimal run, played long after overnight rain and whilst most combatants struggled in vain on the ‘lightning fast’ greens, a few returned good scores. John Davis and Leo Wanka won their respective divisions and Sal Brizzi enjoyed a respectable 34 pts. Adrian Schmidt, Ebrahim and Rob Motea gratefully received some choccies for their modest returns. How to Tell If He’s lying to you
There’s nothing worse than the feeling that your man might not be telling you the whole truth. Maybe he told you he was working late, but someone mentioned seeing him somewhere else – and now the specter of him with another woman is floating through your mind. He Can’t Stop Fidgeting Lying makes people feel uncomfortable, and it shows in their body language. He may play with his keys or blink too often – both examples of the kind of fidgeting behavior that goes along with lying. He may run his hands through his hair frequently, in an attempt to calm or sooth himself. 2. He Avoids Personal Conversation One of the great aspects of being in a relationship is the level of comfort you have that allows you to share the more private details of your life. But your man keeps those details secret and doesn’t let you in to his inner thoughts. While some men are truly uncomfortable sharing deep thoughts, liars use it as an excuse to avoid saying anything that may get their tall tales discovered. 3. The Details Get Mixed Up Telling a lie means the liar has to remember all the details of his story. Sooner or later, he’s bound to forget something he told you before and change a fact or say the wrong thing. Keep your ears open for things he says that don’t make sense with the rest of his story.
