Spring 2011 - Week 1

Special basketball edition!

Cole’s Future Burns Bright Every good college basketball team needs a leader. Someone to take the team to the next level. Someone who can be counted on to set the standard on and off the court. Someone like Norris Cole. Norris, a 6’ 2” senior from Dayton, Ohio, was named a first-team All-Horizon League selection last year and has already been named the conference player of the week twice this year. One of the top-rated point guards in the country, he leads the Vikings in points, steals, assists and free throw percentage. This past summer Norris attended the Deron Williams Skills Academy in Chicago, an elite camp open to only the top 10 collegiate point guards. He hopes to someday face Deron, an all-star point guard for the Utah Jazz, on an NBA court and according to most, including head coach Gary Waters, there’s a chance Norris could do it. His talent is turning heads in Cleveland and around the country. Featured in the Plain Dealer newspaper several times as well as Scene Magazine, Norris was named one of Cleveland’s

30 Most Interesting People for 2011 by Cleveland Magazine. He has a profile on the ESPN NBA draft tracker and has been proclaimed as the new king of hoops in Cleveland. NBA scouts are said to be watching closely. When not on the court or dreaming of playing in the NBA, Norris works hard in the classroom. A health science major and a member of the National Honor Society, his focus is sports medicine and he communicates often with his mentor Cleveland Cavaliers head trainer Max Benton, whom he met through a mentoring program started by head coach Gary Waters. As hobbies, he names watching killer crossover compilations on YouTube, finding new apps to download to his iPad, playing Call of Duty on Xbox and traveling home to Dayton. Free time is hard to find this time of year but Norris wouldn’t have it any other way. Whether it be in the weight room, film sessions, practice, games or during travel, classes and study, Norris gives it his all and represents what Viking basketball and the talented, hard working students of Cleveland State are all about.

CSU basketball has made the NCAA Division I March Madness Championship Tournament in each of the last three years! The women’s team in 2008 & 2010 and the men in 2009.

At 6’ 6” and 195 lbs., sophomore forward Tim

I played for an AAU team in Chicago and Tai Streets, a former NFL wide receiver, was our coach. One day Tai called and asked a few of the guys on the team if we were up for a day of basketball. Later that day we pulled up to the huge house with the number 23 on the gate and I had a feeling it was Michael Jordan’s house but I just couldn’t believe it. We drove through the gate and up a long driveway. We walked into a building and I caught him out of the corner of my eye – it really was Michael Jordan. We played basketball with him all day at his indoor court. That was the best basketball day of my life. -As told by Jeremy Montgomery, CSU junior guard from Chicago, Illinois

If you ever get the urge to meet the biggest Carrie Underwood fan on earth – seek out sophomore forward Kaila Montgomery from Canada. She ran into Carrie before her concert at the Wolstein Center and keeps her special photo memory in her cell phone.
