GAME NOTES ▶ THIS WEEKEND The Dartmouth men’s hockey team will wrap-up its two-weekend homestand against Clarkson and St. Lawrence this Friday and Saturday at Thompson Arena. The Big Green were swept at home last weekend by Union and Rensselaer and are still seeking their first win of 2013-14 ▶ LAST TIME OUT It was rough going last weekend with a 7-2 loss to Union on Friday night and a 7-1 defeat to RPI the following evening. All three of Dartmouth’s goals in the two contests came in the third period while on the man-advantage, but were too late for the home team to make a comeback bid. ▶ SCOUTING CLARKSON The Golden Knights have surprised a lot of the pundits this season as they were picked 12th by both the coaches and media prior to the start of 2013-14 and are now currently No. 16 in the

USCHO National Poll. Clarkson has earned the ranking with a 7-2-1 overall mark and a record of 1-1-0 after one week of ECAC Hockey play. A balanced attack has seen 17 different players record the team’s 27 goals so far, while the backend has also solidified with the eighthbest scoring defense in the country at just 2.10 goals allowed per game. The Golden Knights are also winning close contests, posting a 4-0 record in one-goal games. Ben Sexton leads the team in scoring with nine points (1g/8a), while Allen McPherson and Joe Zarbo have posted four goals each. Sophomore Greg Lewis and freshman Steve Perry have split time in goal with nearly identical (and impressive) stats. ▶ ALL-TIME VS. THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS Clarkson has traditionally been strong in its match-up with the Big Green, winning 67 of the 99 all-time meetings between the programs. Friday will mark the 100th match-up between the two with the Golden Knights holding a 67-

Eric Neiley began the season with a 3-game goal-scoring streak, the best stretch of his career at any point in the season It took Dartmouth 4 games to reach 5 PPGs this season, while it wasn’t until the 9th game last year that the team reached that figure

GAME NOTES (CONT.) 25-7 advantage. Each team earned a victory on their own home ice last season with fourgoal wins as the games were 5-1 Dartmouth in Hanover and 4-0 in favor of Clarkson in Potsdam. The Big Green are just 16-30-4 at home against the Golden Knights in 50 contests, but have won the last two in the Upper Valley. ▶ SCOUTING ST. LAWRENCE The Saints are coming off its ECAC Hockey opening weekend that saw them tie both Yale and Brown on the road by a score of 3-3 in each outing. Senior Greg Carey, who led the league in points last season with 51, is back and continues to put up big numbers on the scoresheet, leading the team in assists (9) and points (13). Younger brother Matt Carey, a freshman on the roster, is the team leader with five goals through the first eight games. Matt Weninger remains the team’s starting netminder for the fourth straight season, posting a 3.02 goals-against average and a save percentage of .897 en route to a 3-2-2 win/loss mark. ▶ ALL-TIME VS. THE SAINTS Like Clarkson, St. Lawrence has owned a decisive advantage against the Big Green all-time, holding a 54-33-3 record against the team from the Upper Valley in the series that dates back to the 1949-50 season. However, it has been much closer when the games have been played in Hanover, as the Saints are 23-21-1 in 45 games.

The two split wins last season with the road team earning the victory in each instance. Just two years ago during the 2011-12 season, the Green and Saints played five times, including a two-game sweep in Canton by Dartmouth in the first round of the ECAC hockey Tournament. ▶ POWER-PLAY POINTS Dartmouth was 3-for-10 against the Dutchmen and Engineers in the first weekend of league play. Friday-night goals from Eric Neiley and Andy Simpson were followed by another manadvantage tally from freshman Troy Crema on Saturday against RPI. The last time Dartmouth had two power-play goals in a game was Feb. 1 of last season in a 2-2 tie at Union (2-for-3). The last time the team had three PPG in a weekend was at the start of 2012-13 when it was 1-for5 vs. Yale and 2-for-4 against Brown at the Ivy Shootout in Providence. ▶ AT IT AGAIN Junior Eric Neiley continued his hot start this past weekend with a goal and an assist against Union. His third-period tally gave him a goal in three straight games to open the season. Only one time previously had the Warminster, Pa., native managed goals in consecutive games and had never scored three times in a three-game window prior to this season. He leads the team with four points thus far.

▶ FAST FIVE The Big Green have just eight goals this season, but the last five have all come on the power play. It took Dartmouth until its ninth game of the season to score that many man-advantage markers in 2012-13, doing so on Nov. 24 at Boston College (1-for-4). ▶ SIMPSON SCORES Junior Andy Simpson picked up his first goal of the season and the fourth of his career 1:51 into the third period of the Friday-night tilt with Union on a slap shot from the point. In three games played, Simpson has three points thanks to a two-assist game against Brown at the Prudential Center on Oct. 26 and now ranks second on the team in scoring. ▶ FIRST POINT Making his collegiate debut, freshman defender Josh Hartley recorded his first career point with an assist on Troy Crema’s power-play tally against RPI. Hartley’s shot from the halfboards was redirected below the circle by his classmate for the lone Dartmouth goal of the evening. ▶ ALSO MAKING THEIR DEBUT In addition to Hartley, defenseman Brandon Kirk and forward Grant Opperman pulled on the Dartmouth sweater for the first time this past weekend. Opperman suited up against Union, while Kirk appeared against the Engineers. ▶ JUMPS IN, GET POINT Also assisting on Crema’s goal was sophomore winger Connor Dempsey as he made his 2013-

14 debut on the line chart. Dempsey started the play by working the puck from below the circle to Hartley for the initial shot attempt that Crema was able to redirect. ▶ DOESN’T HAPPEN OFTEN A win on Friday would snap the two-game skid on home ice for the Green and White. The last time Dartmouth fell in three straight games played at Thompson Arena was two years ago when it lost to Yale (Jan. 28), Union (Feb. 10) and Rensselaer (Feb. 11) during the 2011-12 campaign. ▶ UPPER VALLEY CONNECTIONS Familiar faces to fans in the stands this weekend will be seen on the ice Saturday night as St. Lawrence will bring Hanover High graduate Patrick Doherty, Canaan native Gavin Bayreuther and Dartmouth transfer Brian Ward to town. Ward left halfway through the 2011-12 season to once again play in the USHL without having seen game action in a Big Green sweater, returning to the collegiate ranks with the Saints after sitting out last season. ▶ WHAT’S AHEAD? The Big Green will make its first ECAC Hockey road trip of 2013-14 next weekend as it heads back to the Garden State for a Friday-night (Nov. 15) contest at Princeton before venturing northward on I-95 for a Saturday-night (Nov. 16) meeting with the defending league regular season champion and national runner-up Quinnipiac.

CLARKSON/ST. LAWRENCE • NOV. 8-9, 2013 The Big Green has won two titles under Gaudet. In 2007 Dartmouth captured a share of its first Ivy title since Gaudet was in net in 1980. The 2005-06 season gave Dartmouth its first-ever ECACHL title. Gaudet was also named ECAC Hockey’s Coach of the Year, making him the second coach to earn the award with two separate teams. He was also a finalist for the Division I Coach of the Year award. Gaudet has now had two Ivy League Players of the Year, Mike Ouellette earned the honor in 2005-06 while David Jones was given the title in 2006-07. Jones was also an All-America, giving Gaudet four back-to-back players to earn that distinction.

Head Coach

BOB GAUDET ’81 Entering his 17th season as head coach of the Dartmouth men’s ice hockey program in 2013-14, Bob Gaudet has firmly established himself in the lore of this century-old program. A 1981 Dartmouth graduate and four-year member of the varsity hockey team, Gaudet has made the Big Green one of the most consistent teams in both ECAC Hockey and the Ivy League during his time behind the bench. In the last several seasons, Gaudet has reached several key milestones, earning his 200th win behind the Big Green bench in 2010-11 and eclipsing the 300-career win mark in the first game of 2011-12. In 24 seasons as a head coach, including the last 16 at Dartmouth, Gaudet has worked with and developed some of the nation’s top talents. Eight former Dartmouth players suited up for NHL teams in 2010-11 alone and nine total in that time. Several more former student-athletes also played in other professional leagues in the last two years, including the KHL, AHL, ECHL and the CHL. Entering the 2013-14 season, Gaudet ranks second all-time at Dartmouth with 234 wins, trailing only Big Green legend Eddie Jeremiah ’30, who racked up 308 victories in 26 seasons with the program. Gaudet’s .508 winning percentage (234-226-59) is the thirdbest mark at Dartmouth as well. After nine successful seasons behind the Brown University bench from 1988-97, Gaudet returned to Hanover for the 1997-98 campaign. In 2010-11, Gaudet and the Big Green made huge strides to return to national prominence. Dartmouth finished the season ranked No. 15 in the nation after posting 19 wins and winning the ECAC Hockey Consolation Game in Atlantic City, N.J. At Dartmouth, Gaudet guided the Big Green to seven straight winning seasons from the 2000-01 season to 2006-07 and had 20-win seasons in 2002-03 and 2004-05. The 20-13-2 record in 2004-05 marked the team’s fifth consecutive campaign above .500, the first time that had happened in school history. Gaudet has also led the Big Green to seven straight home playoff series, and in 2001, the program made its first trip to the ECAC semifinals in 20 years. He earned his 200th career win against St. Lawrence on Feb. 11, 2005 and has a Dartmouth record of 234-226-59 (entering 2013-14).

Gaudet took over Brown’s coaching reins in 1988 and immediately went about transforming the Bears from a perennial cellar-dweller into one of the ECAC’s top programs. During his tenure, Brown steadily climbed in the league standings, from 12th in ’89 to eighth in ’90 and ’91, fifth in ’92, third in ’93, fourth in ’94 and all the way to second in ‘95. Since his return in 1997, Gaudet began the same process at Dartmouth. The Big Green finished 11th his first two years, eighth in 2000, fifth in ’01, third in ’05 and was tied for first in 2006-07. During Gaudet’s time at Brown, the Bears were crowned Ivy League champions twice (1991 and 1995) and, in 1993, made the school’s first NCAA appearance since 1976. In both 1993 and 1995, he was a finalist for Division I Coach of the Year. He was named ECAC Coach of the Year in 1995 after leading Brown to a second-place finish in the league, just one-and-a-half games behind first-place Clarkson. The Bears also spent much of the year in and out of the top 10 in the national polls. Gaudet graduated in 1981 with a degree in visual arts after four productive seasons for the Big Green hockey team. In 1979 and 1980, Gaudet led the team to Ivy League titles and appearances in the NCAA Frozen Four. As a senior, he served as co-captain and was a recipient of the Philip D. McInnis Award for spirit, loyalty and dedication to Dartmouth ice hockey. In 76 career games, he made a school-record 2,129 saves, while allowing only 299 goals for a 4.00 career goals-against average and an .877 save percentage. He had his most successful campaign as a sophomore when he recorded two of his four-career shutouts to go along with a 3.03 goals-against average. He was First Team All-Ivy in 1978-79 and 1979-80, and was a two-time recipient of the Canterbury Society Award for the best Ivy League goalie. Following graduation, Gaudet signed a free-agent contract with the Winnipeg Jets of the National Hockey League. He played for minor-league affiliates of Winnipeg in the CHL and IHL for one year before a knee injury cut short his promising career. Gaudet and his wife Lynne, also a 1981 Dartmouth graduate, reside in Etna, N.H., and have three children: sons Joe and Jim and daughter Kelly. Eldest son Joe graduated from Dartmouth in 2010, while Jim earned his degree from the College in 2012. Both Joe and Jim played four seasons with the Big Green with each serving as an alternate captain in their final seasons with the team. ▶ FIRST TIMERS Sophomore Jack Barre and freshman Troy Crema picked the perfect time to find themselves on the scoresheet for the first time as members of the Big Green. On the big stage of playing in an NHL rink, both Barre and Crema found the back of the net. Barre got Dartmouth on the board for the first time this season by knocking in a rebound at the top of the crease just 3:40 into the third period on Friday night. Crema got his first goal on a redirect of an Andy Simpson point shot just as a second-period power play was expiring Saturday against the Bears. ▶ CAREER DAY Simpson finished the game vs. Brown with two assists, helping to set up both McNally and Crema’s goals against the Bears. Ten previous times, Simpson had posted one assist in a game as Saturday helped set a new career best in both assists and points. ▶ GETS THE NOD, SPLITS THE TIME Making his first start in goal, sophomore James Kruger turned aside 17 Princeton shots Newark. Kruger had made just one appearance in relief as a freshman last winter, but looked sharp when tested at the Prudential Center. A positive sign for the forwards could’ve actually

served as a hindrance to the second-year goalie as Dartmouth possessed the puck far more than its opponents, outshooting the Tigers, 40-20, limiting the Minnetonka, Minn., native’s ability to find his rhythm. ▶ HOME COOKIN’ In 2012-13, Dartmouth was 12-5-1 in games played at Thompson Arena. Those 12 wins were the most of any Ivy League program and ranked third in ECAC Hockey behind Quinnipiac (15 in 22 games) and Rensselaer (13 in 19 games). The 3.44 goals per game (62 total) in those contests were the second most by any ECAC program, trailing only Colgate’s 3.88 (66). ▶ LEADING THE WAY Junior Tyler Sikura was named team captain following last season by a vote conducted by the team. Sikura is the second junior in the last three seasons to don the ‘C’ on his sweater after Mike Keenan was tabbed for the 2011-12 campaign. Sikura’s selection has made him the 132nd captain in the team’s 108-year history.
