Dartmouth (4-15-3, 3-11-1) vs. Harvard (6-12-3, 3-9-3) ▶ Fri., Feb. 7, 2014 ▶ 7 PM ▶ Cambridge, Mass. ▶ Bright-Landry Hockey Center (2,850) ▶ All-Time Series: 62-128-12 (203rd Meeting) ▶ Last Meeting: Nov. 30, 2013 - W, 2-1 (Hanover) ▶ Streak: 3-0-0 GAME NOTES ▶FRIDAY’S GAME The Dartmouth men’s hockey team will be on the road Friday night to take on Harvard in Cambridge. The Big Green and Crimson are set to drop the puck inside Bright-Landry Hockey Center at 7 p.m. ▶LAST TIME OUT After a humbling defeat at the hands of No. 3 Quinnipiac on Friday night, Dartmouth came out of the gate quickly the following evening against Princeton. Building a 3-0 first-period lead and a four-goal advantage early in the second, the Big Green were able to hold off a determined Tigers squad in the final stages of the contest for a 5-3 win, leapfrogging them in the ECAC Hockey standings. Four players totaled multi-point efforts in the win, led by Ryan Bullock and Charlie Mosey with three each. ▶SCOUTING HARVARD The Crimson defeated Princeton last Friday night in Cambridge, 3-2, to snap a five-game winless stretch. However, in the first game of the 2014 Beanpot tournament on Monday afternoon, Harvard was handed a 6-0 loss by Northeastern at the TD Garden. Overall, the team is 6-12-3, while its 3-9-3 mark in ECAC Hockey play currently has it just two points ahead of Dartmouth in 10th place. Sophomore Jimmy Vesey leads the team with 11 goals and 17 points in 21 games this season,

while classmate Kyle Criscuolo is a close second in each category with 10 goals and 15 points. Goaltending duties have been split between senior Raphael Girard (5-6-2, 2.63 GAA, .923 S%) and junior Steve Michalek (1-5-1, 2.93 GAA, .910 S%) as each have similar numbers, but Girard’s win-loss record has been better and given him three more appearances in goal. ▶ALL-TIME AGAINST THE CRIMSON The second-most common opponent in program history, Friday will mark the 203rd all-time meeting between the two Ivy League foes. Harvard holds a solid 128-62-12 advantage in those contests, but Dartmouth has won three straight and is 6-1-3 in the last 10 against the team from Cambridge. ▶OLYMPIC FLAVOR It seems fitting that on the same night as the opening ceremonies of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, the two most well-represented teams in terms of Olympic players in ECAC Hockey will square off. Twenty Harvard players have gone on to participate in the Olympic games, including 19 from the United States. Dartmouth’s 19 players, including 18 from the US, is the secondbest figure in the 12-team league. Yale is third among the league’s teams with nine players making Olympic appearances. TWITTER POINTS @DARTMOUTH_MIH IN 140 CHARACTERS OR LESS... No other ECACH teams have more Olympic players in history than Harvard (20) and Dartmouth (19). They meet Fri. during Opening Ceremonies. Friday’s game will mark the 203rd all-time meeting between Dartmouth and Harvard in men’s hockey, second-most against any one opponent. Dartmouth’s 3- for-4 showing on the PP against Princeton jumped the season figure from 16.7% to 19.5% and from 39th nationally to 22nd.

GAME NOTES (CONT.) ▶FIRST CAREER WIN After several hard-luck starts and a tie with Cornell, sophomore James Kruger finally earned his first career victory in net against Princeton. The second-year netminder needed to make just 17 saves in earning the win, including nine in the second period. He had been dealt an OT loss in his first career start on Oct. 25 in Newark against the Tigers. ▶TWO-GOAL GAME Junior Jesse Beamish recorded his second career two-goal game with a pair against the Tigers on Saturday night. The Mississauga, Ontario, native scored the team’s third goal of the first period and added the insurance marker midway through the third. He last had two goals in a game on Feb. 16, 2013 at home against Colgate. ▶THREE-POINT NIGHT Sophomore Ryan Bullock set a new career high with three points in the win against Princeton, scoring once and assisting on two others. He started the night with an assist on the opening goal, only to score his second of the season just eight minutes later on a one-timer from the high slot while on an odd-man rush. He would wrapup his three-point night with an assist on Brandon McNally’s second-period tip-in just 45 seconds into the frame. His previous best had been two points, accomplished twice.

▶CAREER HIGH IN HELPERS Like Bullock, Charlie Mosey factored into three Dartmouth goals on Saturday. Mosey got on the scoresheet first on Bullock’s goal, while also adding helpers on both of Beamish’s tallies. Only once before had Mosey assisted on multiple goals in a game, dishing out a pair on March 1, 2013 in the Tigers’ last appearance in Hanover. He came into Saturday’s game with just one assist this season in addition to his five goals. ▶BACK IN THE LINEUP After missing two games over two weekends due to a suspension handed down by the league, junior Eric Neiley returned to the lineup against Princeton in a big way. Neiley was seemingly the best player on the ice all night for either team, finishing with an assist and a Dartmouth seasonhigh eight shots on goal. ▶POWER FORWARD Brandon McNally’s size (6-2, 215) makes him the perfect player to fill the role of the Big Green’s top power forward. That ability was on display in the most recent outing as he redirected an Eric Neiley shot from the point early in the middle period for the goal that proved to be the game winner. He also created a screen in front of Princeton’s Sean Bonar that allowed Grant Opperman to net the game’s opening tally and set up Bullock’s one-timer on the rush with a well-placed pass across the slot.

GAME NOTES (CONT.) ▶JANUARY SLUMP/FEBRUARY SUCCESS After an 0-for-23 month of January on the power play, the Green stepped things up the first chance they could with the calendar switching to February. In four opportunities with the man-advantage, Dartmouth scored three times as Opperman, McNally and Beamish all managed to slip the puck in the back of the net while skating a man up on Princeton. The 3-for-4 night helped raise the Big Green’s season figure from 16.7% before the game to 19.5% afterward, jumping from 39th in the country to 22nd. ▶SCORING EARLY Opperman’s fifth goal of the season is more than any other first-year player on the roster this season. It also was his seventh point on Dartmouth’s first goal of a game this season, tied with Geoff Ferguson for second on the team behind Brad Schierhorn’s eight. Schierhorn had assists on both of the team’s opening goals this weekend, including Friday night against Quinnipiac on Tim O’Brien’s marker and then on Opperman’s the next day. ▶JUST KEEP SHOOTING Just 24 hours after being held to a season-low 13 shots on goal against the Bobcats, the Big Green bounced back with a season-high 48 against Princeton. The previous high was also against the Tigers as Dartmouth had 40 in the season opener in late October.

UPCOMING ECAC GAMES

After Harvard took Game 1 on a Brian Hart goal at 17:15 to give the Crimson a 2-1 victory, the Big Green bounced back with a 4-1 win in Game 2 before clinching the series with a 6-3 victory in Game 3. ▶IVY LEAGUE DIGITAL NETWORK Friday’s game will be broadcast live on the Ivy League Digital Network. Fans who have purchased the package to watch all Dartmouth home games will also be able to tune in to see the Big Green and Crimson do battle Friday night. After the contest with Harvard, only one regular season road contest with an Ivy League foe remains on the schedule, a Feb. 28 meeting with Cornell at Lynah Rink in Ithaca. ▶STADIUM SERIES Former Big Green defenseman Ben Lovejoy ’06 became the first alum to appear in an NHL outdoor game when his Anaheim Ducks defeated the Los Angeles Kings in front of more than 54,000 fans at Dodger Stadium on Jan, 25. Tanner Glass ’07 is inline to become the second when the Pittsburgh Penguins play the Chicago Blackhawks at Soldier Field on March 1. ▶WHAT’S AHEAD? Following the one-game weekend with Harvard, Dartmouth will be back out on the road next weekend with a trip to the North Country to take on St. Lawrence (Feb. 14) and Clarkson (Feb. 15).

▶2013 PLAYOFF RECAP These two teams played a three-game series in the first round of the 2013 ECAC Hockey Championship Tournament last March in Hanover.

HARVARD • FEB. 7, 2014 The Big Green has won two titles under Gaudet. In 2007 Dartmouth captured a share of its first Ivy title since Gaudet was in net in 1980. The 2005-06 season gave Dartmouth its first-ever ECACHL title. Gaudet was also named ECAC Hockey’s Coach of the Year, making him the second coach to earn the award with two separate teams. He was also a finalist for the Division I Coach of the Year award. Gaudet has now had two Ivy League Players of the Year, Mike Ouellette earned the honor in 2005-06 while David Jones was given the title in 2006-07. Jones was also an All-America, giving Gaudet four back-to-back players to earn that distinction.

Head Coach

BOB GAUDET ’81 Entering his 17th season as head coach of the Dartmouth men’s ice hockey program in 2013-14, Bob Gaudet has firmly established himself in the lore of this century-old program. A 1981 Dartmouth graduate and four-year member of the varsity hockey team, Gaudet has made the Big Green one of the most consistent teams in both ECAC Hockey and the Ivy League during his time behind the bench. In the last several seasons, Gaudet has reached several key milestones, earning his 200th win behind the Big Green bench in 2010-11 and eclipsing the 300-career win mark in the first game of 2011-12. In 24 seasons as a head coach, including the last 16 at Dartmouth, Gaudet has worked with and developed some of the nation’s top talents. Eight former Dartmouth players suited up for NHL teams in 2010-11 alone and nine total in that time. Several more former student-athletes also played in other professional leagues in the last two years, including the KHL, AHL, ECHL and the CHL. Entering the 2013-14 season, Gaudet ranks second all-time at Dartmouth with 234 wins, trailing only Big Green legend Eddie Jeremiah ’30, who racked up 308 victories in 26 seasons with the program. Gaudet’s .508 winning percentage (234-226-59) is the thirdbest mark at Dartmouth as well. After nine successful seasons behind the Brown University bench from 1988-97, Gaudet returned to Hanover for the 1997-98 campaign. In 2010-11, Gaudet and the Big Green made huge strides to return to national prominence. Dartmouth finished the season ranked No. 15 in the nation after posting 19 wins and winning the ECAC Hockey Consolation Game in Atlantic City, N.J. At Dartmouth, Gaudet guided the Big Green to seven straight winning seasons from the 2000-01 season to 2006-07 and had 20-win seasons in 2002-03 and 2004-05. The 20-13-2 record in 2004-05 marked the team’s fifth consecutive campaign above .500, the first time that had happened in school history. Gaudet has also led the Big Green to seven straight home playoff series, and in 2001, the program made its first trip to the ECAC semifinals in 20 years. He earned his 200th career win against St. Lawrence on Feb. 11, 2005 and has a Dartmouth record of 234-226-59 (entering 2013-14).

Gaudet took over Brown’s coaching reins in 1988 and immediately went about transforming the Bears from a perennial cellar-dweller into one of the ECAC’s top programs. During his tenure, Brown steadily climbed in the league standings, from 12th in ’89 to eighth in ’90 and ’91, fifth in ’92, third in ’93, fourth in ’94 and all the way to second in ‘95. Since his return in 1997, Gaudet began the same process at Dartmouth. The Big Green finished 11th his first two years, eighth in 2000, fifth in ’01, third in ’05 and was tied for first in 2006-07. During Gaudet’s time at Brown, the Bears were crowned Ivy League champions twice (1991 and 1995) and, in 1993, made the school’s first NCAA appearance since 1976. In both 1993 and 1995, he was a finalist for Division I Coach of the Year. He was named ECAC Coach of the Year in 1995 after leading Brown to a second-place finish in the league, just one-and-a-half games behind first-place Clarkson. The Bears also spent much of the year in and out of the top 10 in the national polls. Gaudet graduated in 1981 with a degree in visual arts after four productive seasons for the Big Green hockey team. In 1979 and 1980, Gaudet led the team to Ivy League titles and appearances in the NCAA Frozen Four. As a senior, he served as co-captain and was a recipient of the Philip D. McInnis Award for spirit, loyalty and dedication to Dartmouth ice hockey. In 76 career games, he made a school-record 2,129 saves, while allowing only 299 goals for a 4.00 career goals-against average and an .877 save percentage. He had his most successful campaign as a sophomore when he recorded two of his four-career shutouts to go along with a 3.03 goals-against average. He was First Team All-Ivy in 1978-79 and 1979-80, and was a two-time recipient of the Canterbury Society Award for the best Ivy League goalie. Following graduation, Gaudet signed a free-agent contract with the Winnipeg Jets of the National Hockey League. He played for minor-league affiliates of Winnipeg in the CHL and IHL for one year before a knee injury cut short his promising career. Gaudet and his wife Lynne, also a 1981 Dartmouth graduate, reside in Etna, N.H., and have three children: sons Joe and Jim and daughter Kelly. Eldest son Joe graduated from Dartmouth in 2010, while Jim earned his degree from the College in 2012. Both Joe and Jim played four seasons with the Big Green with each serving as an alternate captain in their final seasons with the team.
