THIS WEEK Dartmouth (2-11-2) vs. Boston University (7-9-2) ▶ Wed., Jan. 8, 2014 ▶ 7 PM ▶ Boston, Mass. ▶ Agganis Arena (6,300) ▶ All-Time Series: 28-45-2 (76th Meeting) ▶ Last Meeting: Jan. 15, 2008 - W, 3-1 (Boston) ▶ Streak: 1-0-0 GAME NOTES ▶WEDNESDAY’S GAME The Dartmouth men’s hockey team is back in action Wednesday night against Boston University at Agganis Arena. Faceoff between the Big Green and Terriers is set for 7 p.m. ▶LAST TIME OUT For the second straight game, Dartmouth played to a draw Friday night. Against No. 20 Vermont in Burlington, the Green and White earned a 1-1 tie inside the unforgiving confines of Gutterson Fieldhouse. Dartmouth took a 1-0 lead in the late stages of the second period and was able to hold off a resurgent Catamounts team to salvage the non-conference tie. ▶SCOUTING BU The Terriers will host Dartmouth Wednesday night, playing their fourth ECAC Hockey opponent of the season and their second in as many games. BU fell, 7-4, to Harvard on Saturday night, dropping to 7-9-2 overall this season. The game with the Crimson saw the teams go a combined 5-for-12 on the power play with the Terriers converting on three of their four chances. This season, sophomore defender Ahti

Oksanen leads the team in scoring with 14 points on a team-best 11 assists to go with three goals. Classmate Danny O’Regan, a San Jose draft pick, has six goals, the best mark among all BU players. Despite being whistled for 18 PIMs against Harvard, the Terriers are one of the least penalized teams in the country this season (10.1/50th), while also boasting the seventh-best power play (23.3%) and the 15th-best penalty kill (84.3%). Sophomores Matt O’Connor (6-4-2/2.83/.924) and Sean Maguire (1-50/2.64/.923) have split goaltending duties under first-year head coach David Quinn, a former Colorado Avalanche assistant and the BU associate head coach during the 2008-09 championship season. ▶ALL-TIME AGAINST BU Former ECAC rivals, these two historic programs have not met since Jan. 15, 2008, a 3-2 Dartmouth win in its first-ever trip to Agganis. All-time, BU holds the 45-282 advantage, including a 21-15-1 mark in Boston. The last win for the Big Green against the Terriers prior to 2008 was a 4-3 victory Jan. 6, 1982 in Hanover.

TWITTER POINTS @DARTMOUTH_MIH IN 140 CHARACTERS OR LESS... The Big Green will take on BU for the first time since Jan. 15, 2008 Grant Opperman scored Dartmouth’s lone goal at UVM, his teamleading fifth point on his team’s first goals of games this season. Wednesday marks the 4th of 5 straight games against Hockey East teams (UNH remains)

GAME NOTES (CONT.) ▶CHUCK THE GOALIE Bouncing back from his most difficult start of the season, sophomore netminder Charles Grant stopped 33 shots against Vermont Friday night in Burlington. Grant had to make more than 30 saves for the third straight game and the fifth in his last six starts as he recorded his second tie of the year and fourth of his career. ▶GRANT’S GOAL The lone Big Green goal against the Catamounts came off the stick of freshman winger Grant Opperman. The Minnesota native beat UVM’s Brody Hoffman between the pads with a turnaround snapshot at the 16:13 mark of the second period to give the visitors the 1-0 lead. For Opperman, it was his fifth point of the year on Dartmouth’s first goal, tying with Brad Schierhorn for the team lead. ▶RANKED OPPONENTS Dartmouth’s streak of consecutive games played against ranked teams ends Wednesday night as BU is currently not in either poll this week. The Green had previously played four straight ranked teams (No. 10 Union, No. 5 Providence, No. 17 Northeastern, No. 20 Vermont) and will also take on this week’s 20th-ranked team in UNH on Saturday night in Manchester.

▶HOCKEY EAST AGAIN The appearance of BU on the schedule marks the fourth-of-five straight games against Hockey East teams for Dartmouth. Never before in the 107-year history of the hockey program has the team played five straight non-conference games against opponents from the same league. Last season, the Big Green played Hockey East teams in four-of-five games with a contest against Bentley breaking up the stretch. ▶CLOSE GAMES LATE Since coming back from Thanksgiving with a home game against Harvard on Nov. 30, Dartmouth is 2-3-2. In those seven matchups, the Big Green have outscored their competition and are a +1 overall. All three losses have been by just a goal, while also earning a 2-1 win against the Crimson, a 4-1 win at No. 8 Yale and ties with Vermont and Northeastern. ▶HARTLEY ADDING OFFENSE Freshman defender Josh Hartley continued to get his name on the scoresheet with an assist against Vermont. Hartley followed up a career game against Northeastern which saw the British Columbia native score twice with the second helper on Opperman’s goal against the Catamounts. Hartley joins sophomore Ryan Bullock as

AT BOSTON UNIVERSITY • JAN. 8, 2014 The Big Green has won two titles under Gaudet. In 2007 Dartmouth captured a share of its first Ivy title since Gaudet was in net in 1980. The 2005-06 season gave Dartmouth its first-ever ECACHL title. Gaudet was also named ECAC Hockey’s Coach of the Year, making him the second coach to earn the award with two separate teams. He was also a finalist for the Division I Coach of the Year award. Gaudet has now had two Ivy League Players of the Year, Mike Ouellette earned the honor in 2005-06 while David Jones was given the title in 2006-07. Jones was also an All-America, giving Gaudet four back-to-back players to earn that distinction.

Head Coach

BOB GAUDET ’81 Entering his 17th season as head coach of the Dartmouth men’s ice hockey program in 2013-14, Bob Gaudet has firmly established himself in the lore of this century-old program. A 1981 Dartmouth graduate and four-year member of the varsity hockey team, Gaudet has made the Big Green one of the most consistent teams in both ECAC Hockey and the Ivy League during his time behind the bench. In the last several seasons, Gaudet has reached several key milestones, earning his 200th win behind the Big Green bench in 2010-11 and eclipsing the 300-career win mark in the first game of 2011-12. In 24 seasons as a head coach, including the last 16 at Dartmouth, Gaudet has worked with and developed some of the nation’s top talents. Eight former Dartmouth players suited up for NHL teams in 2010-11 alone and nine total in that time. Several more former student-athletes also played in other professional leagues in the last two years, including the KHL, AHL, ECHL and the CHL. Entering the 2013-14 season, Gaudet ranks second all-time at Dartmouth with 234 wins, trailing only Big Green legend Eddie Jeremiah ’30, who racked up 308 victories in 26 seasons with the program. Gaudet’s .508 winning percentage (234-226-59) is the thirdbest mark at Dartmouth as well. After nine successful seasons behind the Brown University bench from 1988-97, Gaudet returned to Hanover for the 1997-98 campaign. In 2010-11, Gaudet and the Big Green made huge strides to return to national prominence. Dartmouth finished the season ranked No. 15 in the nation after posting 19 wins and winning the ECAC Hockey Consolation Game in Atlantic City, N.J. At Dartmouth, Gaudet guided the Big Green to seven straight winning seasons from the 2000-01 season to 2006-07 and had 20-win seasons in 2002-03 and 2004-05. The 20-13-2 record in 2004-05 marked the team’s fifth consecutive campaign above .500, the first time that had happened in school history. Gaudet has also led the Big Green to seven straight home playoff series, and in 2001, the program made its first trip to the ECAC semifinals in 20 years. He earned his 200th career win against St. Lawrence on Feb. 11, 2005 and has a Dartmouth record of 234-226-59 (entering 2013-14).

Gaudet took over Brown’s coaching reins in 1988 and immediately went about transforming the Bears from a perennial cellar-dweller into one of the ECAC’s top programs. During his tenure, Brown steadily climbed in the league standings, from 12th in ’89 to eighth in ’90 and ’91, fifth in ’92, third in ’93, fourth in ’94 and all the way to second in ‘95. Since his return in 1997, Gaudet began the same process at Dartmouth. The Big Green finished 11th his first two years, eighth in 2000, fifth in ’01, third in ’05 and was tied for first in 2006-07. During Gaudet’s time at Brown, the Bears were crowned Ivy League champions twice (1991 and 1995) and, in 1993, made the school’s first NCAA appearance since 1976. In both 1993 and 1995, he was a finalist for Division I Coach of the Year. He was named ECAC Coach of the Year in 1995 after leading Brown to a second-place finish in the league, just one-and-a-half games behind first-place Clarkson. The Bears also spent much of the year in and out of the top 10 in the national polls. Gaudet graduated in 1981 with a degree in visual arts after four productive seasons for the Big Green hockey team. In 1979 and 1980, Gaudet led the team to Ivy League titles and appearances in the NCAA Frozen Four. As a senior, he served as co-captain and was a recipient of the Philip D. McInnis Award for spirit, loyalty and dedication to Dartmouth ice hockey. In 76 career games, he made a school-record 2,129 saves, while allowing only 299 goals for a 4.00 career goals-against average and an .877 save percentage. He had his most successful campaign as a sophomore when he recorded two of his four-career shutouts to go along with a 3.03 goals-against average. He was First Team All-Ivy in 1978-79 and 1979-80, and was a two-time recipient of the Canterbury Society Award for the best Ivy League goalie. Following graduation, Gaudet signed a free-agent contract with the Winnipeg Jets of the National Hockey League. He played for minor-league affiliates of Winnipeg in the CHL and IHL for one year before a knee injury cut short his promising career. Gaudet and his wife Lynne, also a 1981 Dartmouth graduate, reside in Etna, N.H., and have three children: sons Joe and Jim and daughter Kelly. Eldest son Joe graduated from Dartmouth in 2010, while Jim earned his degree from the College in 2012. Both Joe and Jim played four seasons with the Big Green with each serving as an alternate captain in their final seasons with the team.
