Section 2

Review of Past Knowledge

Instructions: 1. Go to URL 2. Click “Play” 3. Click “Start” on the game

To play game:

4. Once the game starts, follow the instructions until the game is complete

http://www.curriki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Coll_Antonius/FizzysFirstN umbers

-The purpose of this game is to review the sequence of numbers to make learning addition and subtraction easier.

Section 3

Introduction of Addition

Lesson Plan: 1. Begin lesson by watching video: http://www.curriki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Coll_Group_KhanAcade myMathGroup/Addition?bc=;Coll_Group_STEMSharing.3-5S TEMCollections 2. While watching this lesson, try to remember important tips that we will review later 3. In the video, pay close attention to how the problems are shown visually, by using pictures. This makes addition and subtraction easier to learn and remember.

4

Section 3

How to do Addition: 1. Look at the numbers given in the problem 2. Make the problem into a visual problem, by using drawings to solve the problem, such as using circles like in the video 3. Count how many items you drew to add up the total

Example problems to try: (make sure to show your work by using drawings) 2+3 = ? 3+5 = ? 7+6= ? -answers will be on the next page

v

Section 3

Answers from Addition Problems: 2+3 = 5

3+5 = 8

7+6 = 13

-Count how many you got correct from the beginning problems, and compare that to how many you get correct in the end of the lesson

vi

Section 4

Introduction of Subtraction

Lesson Plan: 1. Begin lesson by watching video: http://www.curriki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Coll_Group_KhanAcade myMathGroup/Subtraction?bc=;Coll_Group_STEMSharing.3 -5STEMCollections 2. While watching this lesson, try to pay close attention to the strategies that they use in the video that will help you solve the problems 3. Remember how they draw the pictures that help with visuals

7

Section 4

How to do Subtraction: 1. Look at the numbers given in the problem 2. Just like addition, try to use visuals and draw items to solve the problems 3. This time, instead of counting the total number of items, you will cross off items and count how many are left, which is a main principle of subtraction

Example problems to try: (make sure to show your work) 4-3 = ? 10-5 = ? 13-4 = ?

viii

Section 4

Answers from Subtraction Problems:

4-3 = 1

10-5 = 5

13-4 = 9

-Count how many you got correct from the beginning problems, and compare that to how many you get correct in the end of the lesson

ix

Section 5

Practice Problems

Subtraction Practice Problems: 1. 9-5 = ? 2. 6-3 = ? 3. 17-8 = ? 4. 9-9 = ?

Addition Practice Problems:

5. 14-6 = ?

1. 4+ 5 = ? 2. 5+6 = ? 3. 16+ 7 = ? 4. 8 + 8 = ?

-we will review all of these answers in class -make sure to show all work and drawings for the problems

5. 10 + 5 = ?
