Easter Traditions...

Across the Globe I n the United States, Easter is celebrated by dipping eggs into dye, Easter egg hunts, receiving Easter baskets, everything from rabbits to eggs being consumed in the form of sugary confections, family feasts, and attending church. These and several other traditions have roots in foreign countries. The St. Louis area consists of a multitude of ethnic groups; each of whom brings different traditions to this holy day.

GERMANY Here, Easter is celebrated from Good Friday to Easter Sunday. Mass is held on Saturday, and Sunday is known as Family Day, where families eat an Easter lunch; cookies and eggs are hidden. Other traditions include dying hollow eggs and hanging them on trees and shrubs during the week of Easter and burning leftover Christmas trees to remove any signs of winter and move on to spring. FRANCE The church bells that normally ring every day in France stop from Thursday before Good Friday through the day before Easter to remind Christians of Jesus’ death. They begin to ring again on Easter, telling Christians that “Jesus is alive again”. Eggs are a large part of the Easter traditions in France; children search for them in their rooms, gardens, and yards. Traditional Easter games include children tossing eggs into the air (the first one to be dropped the loser), and eggs being rolled down a slope, which represents the stone that was removed from Jesus’ tomb. ITALY Easter here is similar to how it is celebrated in France. The pretzel was originally an Easter treat (the twist shape representing arms crossed in prayer).

Live Music at the Weinstrasse Wineries www.moweinstrasse.com

On Easter, families have a feast on a table decorated by dyed eggs that have been blessed by a priest. Italy claims to be the country that first invented the chocolate egg. MEXICO

Augusta Wine & Beer Garden 5601 High St 636-228-4301 augustawinery.com Free live music Sat & Sun, 1-5 pm Starts in April. Check website for schedule.

In Mexico, Easter is part of Holy Week (Palm Sunday through Easter). During this week, some Christians in Mexico participate in Passion Plays, which are reenactments of the Last Supper, the Betrayal, the Judgement, the Procession of the 12 Stations of the Cross, the Crucifixion and the Resurrection. A solemn parade is held in the dark with those in the parade holding statues of Jesus and Mary on Good Friday (when Christians mourn the death of Jesus). Easter is celebrated on the last day of Holy Week. IRELAND Easter is celebrated in Ireland from Good Friday through Easter Sunday. In Ireland, Christians often do not eat until midday, do not burn or shape wood into something else, fish or hunt, use nails, move, “or begin any important enterprise” (Easter Around the World). On the Saturday before Easter, priests bless and distribute holy water. The holy water is sprinkled onto each member of each family, their home, and their cattle. On Easter Sunday, many eggs are not only eaten but dyed and decorated as well. By: Amanda Gertner 14

COVER STORY • INNSBROOK

Your Special Day

Stress-Free! Who is going to call the caterer? Who’s in charge of transportation? Where are all the guests going to stay?

T

o say planning a wedding can be stressful at times might be an understatement. You’re looking forward to a perfect day with the love of your life, but you’re constantly worrying about little details. Wouldn’t it be amazing if you could have the wedding of your dreams without the stress? Innsbrook Resort is in the business of making that dream a reality. Set amid rolling hills and sparkling lakes, Innsbrook is a picture-perfect wedding destination. Since it offers everything you would want for a storybook wedding in one place, Innsbrook is perfect for couples who want an elegant, stress-free wedding without the headache of calling dozens of different vendors. We recently sat down with Jeannie Mueller, Innsbrook Wedding Coordinator, and Dan Thomas, Innsbrook Executive Chef, to get an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at what makes a wedding at Innsbrook so special.

Q

What advice do you have for a bride when she’s looking for a wedding venue?

Jeannie: “I know every bride out there has been thinking about this day since she was a little girl. She has a specific thought in her mind about how things should look and what she wants for the day. So choosing a venue where the wedding coordinator really listens to you and understands what you want is one of the most important things.”

Q

Does Innsbrook meet these criteria?

Jeannie: “Absolutely. As wedding coordinator at Innsbrook, I know that on the big day I have one shot to get it right. And I take that job seriously. Also, Innsbrook offers a lot of cool, unique things that not many other venues have. I mean, picture yourself at your rehearsal dinner at a rustic farmhouse, sitting on hay bales beside a big bonfire. Then you and your guests can spend the night at Innsbrook, and wake up on your wedding day right here. The groom and his buddies can even play a round of golf in the morning if they want to. Everything’s right here in one place. How neat is that?” 21

Q

So what else makes Innsbrook such a unique and special place for weddings? Jeannie: “First of all, it’s 7,500 acres of pure beauty. From the lakes and the almost endless outdoor wedding locations to the elegant banquet rooms, there’s definitely something for everyone.” Dan: “I agree. We have multiple locations for ceremonies, like our lakeside Lake Aspen Stage, an outdoor field with a tree canopy or a rustic farmhouse setting at our equestrian center. We can cater in a tent in a field of wild flowers or just about anywhere at Innsbrook.”

Q

Planning a wedding can be stressful at times. How does choosing Innsbrook for your wedding help take the stress out of planning? Jeannie: “It’s almost a one-stop shop here. Innsbrook offers overnight accommodations for guests, storybook carriage rides for the newlyweds, excellent cuisine, and top-notch service. I don’t want the bride to worry about anything that day, I just want her to walk in and be beautiful. Who’s your photographer? I’ll coordinate with him. What’s your favorite kind of wine? I’ll have a glass in your hand when you get here.”

Q

If you could give a couple just one piece of advice for planning their wedding, what would it be? Jeannie: “Go to a menu tasting where you can really taste the quality of the food that’s being served. Meet the chef and don’t be afraid to ask questions.” Dan: “As executive chef, I like to

meet with the bride-to-be. On the site tour we will help guide her through her thoughts for a perfect wedding day. We’ll show her dining rooms, table settings, and even set up that one-on-one tasting. This is a very special and memorable day for the bride and groom, and they can expect to be well taken care of by our expert staff at Innsbrook.” For a bridal tour of Innsbrook or to request a bridal planning guide, call (636) 928-3366 ext. 884 or email weddings@innsbrook-resort.com TimeOff Magazine / Mar-Apr, 2013

Good Luck Traditions For Your Wedding Day 1. Rain on your wedding day? Some say it’s actually good luck. An old wives’ tale explains that when “tying the knot”, rain on the union makes the bond stronger and harder to break. 2. For good luck, Egyptian women pinch the bride on her wedding day. Ouch! 3. In Sweden, a bride puts a silver coin from her father and a gold coin from her mother in each shoe to ensure that she'll never do without. 4. In Holland, a pine tree is planted outside the newlyweds' home as a symbol of fertility and luck.

TIMEOFF TREASURE HUNT

Make Your Wedding

STAND OUT! C

ouples all around the country are tasting cakes, fussing over seating arrangements and buying tuxedos and dresses. Wedding season is once again upon us. A themed wedding will make this joyous occasion all the more memorable. Try these ideas for an unforgettable experience. Book-Themed For the couples who appreciate the written word and are not ashamed to be called “bookworms,” a theme from their favorite book will personalize their special day. Book themes can be from any novel, such as “Harry Potter”, “Alice in Wonderland”, “The Chronicles of Narnia”, “A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream”, “Anne of Green Gables” or “The Great Gatsby”. Venues, cake decorations from the book and props can set the mood. Art-Themed Couples who are interested in art can express their creativity in an artthemed wedding. The art theme can be done several ways; from holding the wedding in an art studio splattered with vivid colors, holding the ceremony

in an art museum or being centered around a specific form of art or favorite art piece. Fantasy-Themed The fantasy-themed wedding is romantic and magical. Normally thought of as a children’s theme, adults enjoy the wonder and beauty as well. Venues and decorations inspired by famous fairytales set the appropriate mood. Mythology-Themed Norse, Greek, and Roman mythology are popular forms of mythology used as wedding themes. Decorations reflecting the mythology such as cake toppers and centerpieces set the mood. Food from the mythology’s country of origin can also be served to create an extra sense of authenticity. If the couple’s family and friends are feeling adventurous, the wedding party could wear togas (depending on the origin of the mythology). The

bride and groom can dress up as well if they so choose. Music-Themed Couples who choose music as their theme have everything from Rock ‘n Roll to Reggae to incorporate into their wedding. The couple can walk down the aisle to a song being performed live, use cheap instruments (such as guitars) as guest books, or even weave song lyrics into their vows. Movie-Themed It is difficult to find anyone who does not enjoy a night at the movies. Couples can get extremely creative with this theme. The invitations or savethe-date cards can look like ticket stubs, the couple can walk down the aisle to a famous movie theme song, and treats (such as popcorn, Red Vines, and Raisinets) can be served during the reception; the possibilities are endless.

TRENDS in

he mercury is rising, schools are letting out and families across the country are going on vacation. Vacations can sometimes be difficult to plan— especially if there are family members of all ages going on the trip. Families are looking for vacation spots with good food, nice hotels, and activities that everyone can enjoy at a reasonable price. One of the most popular vacation spots for families year after year is Orlando Florida’s Walt Disney World. This world-famous theme park is divided into six parts; Magic Kingdom Park, Epcot, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park, Disney’s Blizzard Beach, and Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon. Disney characters roam the entire park, thrilling small children and bringing out the kid in adults. Disney World features shopping, a variety of shows, and rides ranging from the extreme— like the roller coaster Big Thunder Mountain Railroad—to the less intense, such as Dumbo the Flying Elephant. The rides, life-sized characters, and the iconic Cinderella’s Castle appeal to both children and adults. Downtown Disney and Disney’s Boardwalk offer nightlife for teen and adult guests. Besides Disney World, tourists in Orlando can enjoy SeaWorld and Universal Studios Florida, which now includes The Wizarding World of Harry Potter; the new theme park based on the Harry Potter books and films.

Ocean City, Maryland is one of the many beaches that the east coast is famous for. Ocean City features sandy beaches with waves crashing on the shore and a boardwalk that is almost three miles long. Visitors can ride their bikes or the tram before the sun sets, when the boardwalk’s arcades, rides, and performances open. Ocean City will offer free movie screenings and concerts on the beach, and Family Beach Olympics during the summer of 2013. The famous wild ponies of Assateague are a must-see that is a mere nine miles from Ocean City. For a west coast adventure, San Diego, California is a popular choice. San Diego is home to several museums and parks, including Balboa Park, the Natural History Museum, Air & Space Museum, and SeaWorld. LEGOLAND is located just outside of the city limits, and will open a LEGOLAND Hotel on April 5, 2013. The hotel will have three LEGO themes; Pirate, Kingdom, and Adventure. Of course, one of the most celebrated attractions in San Diego is the San Diego Zoo.

Family Vacations

Galveston Island (off of the coast of Texas) is another hot spot for exploring theme parks and a bit closer to St. Louis than Orlando. There are two parks on the island; Moody Gardens, which is “part theme park, part garden and houses its own rainforest, a stellar aquarium, and the Discovery Museum (“10 Best Vacations…”).” The second park, Schlitterbahn Water Park is open year-round, converting to an indoor park in the offseason. Pleasure Pier, which re-opened in 2012 after being damaged during Hurricane Ike, is home to a 100-foot tall Ferris wheel, a log flume, two roller coasters, and the tallest swing ride in Texas.

Cruises and resorts in (or to) the Bahamas, Mexico, and the Mediterranean are hot because they include meals, activities, and accommodations. Vacationers love the convenience of an all-inclusive package. According to Brenda Blechle, the owner of Gulliver’s Travel, “there is {are} also several pre-arranged tours (known as escorted tours) that are designed specifically for families. They will include destinations and activities that the entire family will be able to participate in and enjoy.” Whether relaxing on the beach or screaming on the steepest slope on a roller coaster, enjoy your escape from the daily grind. Business Happenings From Dog-Trainer to Successful Business Owner

For turning a home-based dog training business into two successful locations with nearly 50 employees and a host of pet services, WestInn Kennels was recently selected for the Business Spotlight Award from the Economic Development Roundtable of St. Charles County. Back in 1994, Sharon West began working as a certified dog trainer to help educate

the public about proper pet care. Eventually some of her students started asking her to help care for their dogs while they were on vacation. Today her successful company, WestInn Kennels, operates a “K-9 Bed ‘n Breakfast” in Dardenne Prairie and a 20,000-square-foot “Everything Under One Woof” location in Wentzville. WestInn Kennels provides boarding, grooming, retail pet supplies, group classes and private instruction. They are also members of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT) and a Better Business Bureau Accredited Business. Upcoming Events dents. The Center houses two theaters and an art gallery. The 1,200-seat “Broadway-style” Bezemes Family Theater, with its full orchestra pit, can host large scale Broadway musicals, concerts, celebrity appearances and dance programs. The Emerson Black Box Theater seats up to 250. With the flexibility of no permanent seats or stage, it can be arranged for traditional theater seating, theater-in-the-round or even classes or rehearsal studios. The Boyle Gallery is large art gallery located just off the main lobby of the Center. The design of the gallery gives it the capability to display many different art forms. You can find sculpture, fine art, or even fashion exhibits in the Gallery. Audiences have thoroughly embraced the theater, as evidenced by its remarkable growth. Since the Center's opening in 2008, it has served over 100,000 guests. Growth this year has been impressive, as evidenced by the number of sold out performances. In the 2011-12 season, there was a total of five sold-out performances. However, half way into 2012-13 season there have already been seven sellouts, effectively tripling the 2011-12 sellouts in just one year. To continue providing top quality entertainment, education in the arts, and cultural expansion, the Board of Directors is establishing the Lindenwood Arts Endowment. The board has committed $2 million and is now raising an additional $1 million. This endowment will help to expand the programs at the Center to attract even larger audiences, bringing artistic enrichment to the surrounding community; improve current academic arts programs; fund scholarships; and provide access the theater’s state-of-the-art facilities to nonprofit groups. 27
