Finding Kansas

Horror movies, video games and books have long made our adrenaline pump and nerves stand on end with elements of suspense, surprise or just plain gore. Haunted houses have done a great job of bringing fear into the third dimension. Recent idealist have found new and exciting ways to ensure that participants are not merely scared “stiff ” but are actively involved in the mayhem. Imagine running a 5k being chased by zombies or engaging in a paintball battle with monsters attacking from multiple directions. Outrunning or outwitting those gory creatures that are out to get you can not only be a new way to make your fright night more fun but a pre workout for that November 1st candy binge. There of course is always something for the traditional “scare” seeker. Haunted houses around town all boast of being the most frightful. Choosing the one for you is basically a matter of preference, age and location. Hayrides, pumpkin patches and other activities are available for the faint of heart. Whatever you choose, have a safe and fun Halloween.

hen planning a special event, whether it is that storybook wedding, a dazzling reception, corporate function or any gathering that requires a professional, quality location, Forest Hills Country Club is the perfect venue. Forest Hills, established in 1964, is a family-oriented, member-owned, full-service club nestled in the lovely west St. Louis County suburb of Clarkson Valley in the Greater Chesterfield area. Nationally recognized as one of the most prestigious private clubs in St. Louis, Forest Hills is surrounded by the luxurious homes of Forest Hills Estates. Its warmth and special appeal comes from the numerous amenities offered. LUXURY AND COMFORT The recent $2.8 million-dollar renovation to Forest Hills has given the clubhouse an all new layout including a formal dining room, spacious bar and cocktail area, comfortable outdoor dining patio, a dedicated family dining room and multiple banquet and meeting rooms. With 5,000 square feet and room for more than 300 guests, the Crystal Ballroom is perfect for large banquets and weddings and can also be divided for more intimate gatherings. The Ballroom provides stunning golf course views and opens to a landscaped flagstone terrace for al fresco cocktail options. The expert staff at the Club specializes in planning and organizing every detail of an event. From hosting the perfect wedding reception or golf tournament, to private parties such as bat/bar mitzvahs and birthday and anniversary parties, the detail oriented staff ensures that every event is memorable. While Forest Hills is a members-only club, non-members are welcome to host events through member sponsorship.

Lifetime Memories Are Made Here!

Forest Hills boasts a spectacular 5,000 square feet Crystal Ballroom which can comfortably host 300 guests and can be divided for more intimate gatherings. THE DESTINATION FOR RECREATION Golf Forest Hills is home to one of the premier private golf courses in the St. Louis area. They pride themselves on maintaining 27 holes of golf to the highest standard of excellence for the pleasure of its members, their families and their guests. It has been home to the LPGA’ s Michelob Light Classic from 1994-1999. The 18hole Championship Golf Course was designed by Chick Adams in the 1960’s and later refined by Dick Nugent. Strategically placed bunkers and hazards are among the gently rolling terrain and offer a challenge to all skill levels from six sets of tee boxes. Forest Hills also has a 9-hole Valley Course for the training of beginning golfers of all ages, along with a practice facility, Golf Shop and three putting greens. 27

The Club hosts several charity and corporate golf tournaments throughout the season; groups may contact them and can choose from several all-inclusive packages or select a customized package. The Golf Shop can assist with awards, trophies and personalized gear to make any outing a success.

Fitness and Fun The new aquatic center has two swimming pools- one for families and one for adults only. The family pool has a beach entry and six Olympic length swim lanes while the adult pool offers a tanning deck and unique underwater seating; the area is surrounded by lush plants and flowers to create a relaxing oasis. For members who are looking to work on their tennis game, both hard surface and clay courts are available for members to enjoy. The Club also hosts a number of junior golf, swim and dive teams, junior tennis and other classes for kids. THE TOTAL PACKAGE With stunning views, first-class dining, and superb service and amenities, Forest Hills Country Club provides everything required to make any event unforgettable. This testamonial says it all. “The level of service of Forest Hills Country Club is unmatched. We would like to once again thank you for helping us hold a first class event. I know you and your entire staff go to great lengths to ensure a flawless, top of the line event.” Dale Turvey, Turvey & Associates.

Missouri’s Weinstrasse Take a Scenic Trip Through Wine Country

W

ith the weather finally cooling into fall’s welcome chill, it’s time to get out and feel alive again. The trees may not color as beautifully as we’d like because of the summer drought, but the appeal of enjoying nature at its most accommodating is still reason to celebrate. What better way to get outdoors and reconnect with nature than to take a lazy, relaxed trip along the highway that offers the best wines in the most beautiful settings in Missouri. Highway 94 in St. Charles County gives a sweeping view of the Missouri River Valley and is nationally recognized as the very first federally approved American Viticultural Area. With only 15-square miles to call its own, our Weinstrasse (wine trail) produces some of the finest wines in America. Our geographic diversity made this area uniquely suited to wine production. Flooding in the Missouri River Valley in 1872 caused the river to change its course, leaving behind a distinct soil type in the Augusta area. The vineyards planted here in the years following the floods yielded crops that began receiving widespread recognition for their distinctive flavors and profiles. Through the years, the vineyards throughout the Weinstrasse have gained international attention and local acclaim, winning multiple awards. Visitors to the wineries enjoy an experience in taste and scenic beauty and relaxed sophistication that rivals any other in the country. Discover these award-winning wines at four family owned wineries: Sugar Creek, Augusta, Balducci, and Montelle—along with several other outstanding wineries— and enjoy more than 100 different selections in wines. With so many locations and wine choices, you’re sure to find your own favorite place to visit again and again.

Ken and Becky Miller and son, Chris Lorch

In 1984, Ken and Becky Miller sold everything and moved from Kirkwood to their dream property in Defiance. In the years following, their leap of faith has yielded a business that gives them great joy. Ken’s grandfather, Michael Belmonte, came to America from Italy. He had a passion for wine-making that coursed through generational veins. Sugar Creek Winery offers a signature red wine, called “Michael’s” that pays tribute to Ken’s grandfather and his influence. Becky’s son, Chris, learned about winemaking in Napa Valley and brought his expertise home to Missouri to join them as their winemaker. April through November, the weekends at Sugar Creek in Defiance are alive with music, food and a relaxing atmosphere. Whether you choose to sit outside on the terraces, visit the tasting rooms or lounge in the parlor of this turn-of-the-century Victorian home, you will find your visit an unforgettable experience. Their wines and other offerings sound as delicious and unique as the winery itself. Names like Blackberry Thicket and Raspberry Patch mingle with other estategrown selections and give a variety of choices for every palate. 38

Whether you decide to enjoy your wine here or take it home, you will taste and appreciate the Millers’ personal touch. BALDUCCI VINEYARDS 6601 Highway 94 South, Augusta www.balduccivineyards.com 636-482-VINO (8466) Fall is the perfect time to treat yourself to the view from Balducci Vineyards. Atop a hill overlooking 76 acres of farmland, vineyard and countryside, you will find it easy to relax on their scenic terraces and inside the tasting room. Rick and Carol Balducci, who established the vineyards in 1988 and opened the restaurant and wine garden in 2001, want your family to feel right at home. Nic, their son, is training to become the new winemaker. Carol runs the restaurant, serving award-winning fare similar to their Balducci’s Restaurant in Maryland Heights, which they’ve owned for 37 years. And Rick is in charge of the vineyards and other phases of the business. With so much acreage and a magnificent setting, Balducci’s can accommodate groups and occasions of any size. They invite you to sample their wines and special beers, dine in their restaurant, or just bring a blanket and picnic basket for your own version of Paradise. Their wines, both red and white, range from dry to sweet. Their best seller is a Riesling-style wine called Sonata. Visit for the atmosphere, historic view, incredible food, and - of course- the outstanding wines. Rick and Carol Balducci

In Good Taste

Tasty Tidbits from Eateries in and Around Chesterfield Screwcaps vs. Corks... There are a dozen reasons why sealing a bottle of wine with a screw cap is better than wine sealed with a cork. There is only ONE reason sealing a bottle with a cork is better than a screw cap. There is a sense of “ceremony" invoked in opening a bottle of wine sealed with a cork. THAT'S IT! That is the only advantage a cork has over a screw cap. Realistically, screw caps make more sense. This is not the screw cap that sealed your Boone's Farm when you were young. The screw cap today is called a Stelvin Closure. The design of this closure was prompted because more and more wines were becoming tainted by a chemical called T.C.A. This chemical affects wine mainly through the corks that seal the bottle. T.C.A. can also taint or "cork" a wine through infected wood barrels, pesticides and preservatives. A "corked" bottle of wine has similar characteristics to smells such as moldy newspapers, wet dog or a damp basement. Screw caps protect the wine from becoming tainted more than a cork. Studies by Wine Spectator in 2005, tasting 2800 wines, found 7% of bottles sealed with a cork were tainted with T.C.A. Less than 1% of wine sealed with a Stelvin Closure were corked. Between 2001 and 2004 all wines from Australia and New Zealand sealed with a screw cap went from 1% to 70%. Some of the most expensive wines in California are now sealed with a Stelvin Closure; i.e. the 1997 Plumpjack Reserve Cabernet. Finally, a lot of customers misunderstand the reason why a server at a restaurant brings you the bottle you ordered, opens it in front of you, hands you the cork and pours you a small taste. You are to feel the cork for moisture to assure you of proper storage. You smell and taste the pour to make sure the wine isn't corked. The server isn't concerned whether you like the wine or not. They want to make sure the wine isn't corked. Let's begin to embrace wines sealed with a screw cap. It is much better for the wine. Provided by Gary Bilder, owner of Lukas Liquor. In the Mood for Pasta? Pasta Ligurian • 1 lb. pasta, linguine or fettuccine • 4 oz. extra virgin olive oil • 4 cloves or 2 heaping tbs. of minced garlic • 5 oz. small cubed feta cheese • 3 1/2 oz. diced sun-dried tomatoes, oil drained • 5 oz. coarsely chopped parsley • 1 lb. peeled deveined shrimp Bring a large saucepan of salted boiling water to a rolling boil. Add pasta and cook until al dente, approx. 5-7 minutes. Drain. In a large skillet heat the oil with red pepper flakes over medium heat so that the flakes flavor the oil. Add the shrimp and saute 1-2 minutes. Reserve the parsley. Add all remaining ingredients and heat until hot. Add pasta and toss. Season to taste. Garnish with chopped parsely. Serves four.
