What is the London Community Woodshop?  

February. It can be such a difficult month. The shortest of them all but it feels like the longest as winter drags on. That makes it all the more important to find moments of celebration. Fortunately, moments of celebration are not hard to come by when your days are spent helping people break out of old patterns and build new futures. Remember the “Groundhog Day” movie with Bill Murray? He was doomed to repeat the same day and the same results over and over. Finally, with help, he learned important truths about himself, changed some behaviours and attitudes, and broke free of the grip of failure. Our goal is to assist our clients, and indeed, ourselves, to break out of unhelpful patterns and build positive new ones. This will free us to move on toward success. Success may be employment. It may be retraining. It may be advancement within an organization. Or it may be simply overcoming a pattern or routine which has been holding someone back. These are the successes we celebrate, the successes that keep us going forward, and the successes we are so pleased to share occasionally through these newsletters. CREATING NEW  PATTERNS

It is a place where woodworkers can experiment, learn new techniques and start a business.  A space where Do it Yourselfers can work on a project for their home, and community groups can build garden boxes! A first for London, the Woodshop will offer workshops led by local artisans. Contact Sarah to get involved, 519667-7795!

BLAKE'S STORY

A SINGLE FATHER. A FRESH START HOW BLAKE GOT ONTO THE RIGHT PATH!

Blake woke up one day wanting to make a change - today he is working full time and planning a great future!  I am a single father, so I always put my son before myself. That meant I could only work during school hours so  that I could take care of him.  I found myself doing jobs that I had very little passion for. I woke up one day and wanted a fresh start, so I moved to London and started looking at schools to better myself in something I enjoy doing. I found out about Pathways through my girlfriend, and after attending all of the workshops, I registered for the CTT (Construction Technology Training) Program.   I have been working in construction for a long time, but I needed proof of my knowledge. I enjoyed the course and found it very helpful.  For me the most interesting thing was learning all about codes and blueprint reading. Now nothing can stand in my way of bettering my skills and future. Today I work full time at McKenzie Homes. What does this job mean to my family? It means that I am able to support my family and plan a great future.

My Takeaway: If I could talk to someone who is in the same position I was, I would say "take the step and come into Pathways. They were accommodating and very helpful. They helped me get on the right path." 

SECURING EMPLOYMENT IN THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY TODAY Today, more and more there is a need for workers in the construction industry to hold certificates from registered organizations showing that they have safe workplace training. Many people, like Blake, have years of experience in the industry, but no longer have the  required certifications to qualify them for entry level positions.

In the   Construction Technology Training  program all graduates receive the certifications needed to safely work on a jobs site, including:  Working at Heights, First Aid and CPR WHMIS (2015/1988) in Construction Heat Stress and Safelift Awareness Safe Table Saw and Skill Saw Operation Worker Health and Safety Awareness

FINDING PURPOSE   - AND SUPPORT Today Sean has been employed for 6 years at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore, but 10 years ago Sean's wife had just passed away, and as a single father of two boys he couldn't find secure work...

l l i Iw Over ten years ago I found myself a single father of two boys. I didn’t really have the money for a babysitter or childcare, so I wasn't able to do very much before or after school.  But as my boys got older I started looking for work, and as time passed it became harder and harder because I had been out of the workforce for so long - nobody wanted to hire me. Wanting to work, being able to work, and not finding anything, I felt frustrated and defeated. I heard about Pathways through my OW worker and decided to give it a try.  For  the next  few years I was with Pathways on and off, and then things started to turn around. 

I registered for the CTT program and loved it. It was hands-on training in something I like to do, building and renovating. Before the course my expertise was mainly in renovating and building kitchens, but that 8 weeks expanded my skills into other areas, including plumbing and electrical.   During the CTT course I first met Bob, an Employment Placement Specialist. Bob was with me each step of the way. He is a big influence on me.  When I needed to talk he was always there.  About 10 years ago my wife passed away and Bob came to the funeral. That meant a lot. 

Today, my life is night and day from when I first walked into Pathways. It feels like I have a purpose.  Money is not as much of a struggle now. I have been employed as a full times sales clerk at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore for 6 years, and Bob still comes into the store to visit every now and then.

I owe all of this, all of what I have now to Pathways and to Bob. That is how I look at it. I praise everything that I have learned.  Because for me, it’s like they didn’t give up on me, and loyalty means a lot to me. 

My Advice My advice to someone in the same situation today," do the work". If you want to work, you’ll do everything you need to do to get to work. Don’t just expect other people to give something to you – you have to work for it. There were a couple times where I wasn’t doing what I needed to do because I didn’t feel like doing it. But in those moments Bob called me on it.  Now, looking back on it, I know that they have heard it all.  So my advice is just go in and do what you need to do, and you will be happier for it in the end.

My Takeaway: Music When I'm not at the ReStore my passion is music. I play bass in a metal band called Thumb Knuckle and listen to everything from classical music to heavy metal. Music has helped me to get through some of the darkest moments in my life.  I'd encourage you to find your creative outlet!
