Moments of Impact “You have to tell yourself there’s nothing you can’t do”

NEW BEGINNINGS START HERE EVERY DAY!

HIGHLIGHT WELCOME! You could almost hear the collective sigh of relief around Pathways as this unrelenting winter finally gave way to a few warm and sunny days. We had spent much time sharing our frustration and misery at the fatigue and illness the many long and cold days carried with them. Similarly, that sense of hardship that seems never ending is what so many of our clients endure from day to day, and helping them move through that to the “Spring” of employment and self-sustainability is why we each do what we do. In the first 4 months of 2018 over 80 Ontario Works’ participants have found employment through the combined efforts of Ontario Works and Pathways. Over 80 individuals have had the chance to leave the long winter of hardship behind and see the signs of a new life to come. It is not hard to get out of bed and come to work when you have the opportunity to be a part of that every day! We hope you enjoy this newsletter as we again focus on the great work accomplished each day by the caseworkers and staff at OW and the team at Pathways, all working together for the good of our clients, working together to bring some sunshine into their world! - Jerry, Director of Client Services

MY FIRST CAR IN 14 YEARS

“You have to tell yourself there’s nothing you can’t do” This is my first car in 14 years. It's good to know I have it. To know I can go out in the country driving if I want… that I can drive back and forth to work.” I’ve never had any other job in the past 25 years where I’ve made this much money. I have a great boss, who is always telling me that I’ve done a great job... I am happy. Being on welfare is just an existence, and barely that. You have little money and that’s it. Now I am saving to move into a larger apartment.

MOMENTS Inspiration

THE A-HA, LIFE CHANGING, CONFIDENCEBUILDING, ONE-STEP FORWARD MOMENTS

Impact "YOU GAVE ME THE CONFIDENCE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE I NEEDED TO GET MY FOOT IN THE DOOR" - RAY

Inspiration I completed an intake appointment with a young woman.  She was coming out of an unhealthy relationship and trying to navigate life as a single mother with 2 young children.  She heard about the Construction Technologies Training program and wanted to participate.  There was one problem though: she wouldn’t be able to get to Pathways on time to attend the programs unless she could arrange before school care for her children. She had been on a waitlist at the school for this service for quite some time and didn’t know when or if she would be accepted.  She didn’t want to give up, so we booked her to start the workshops a month away to give her time to look at options.  She made the most of that month, calling and emailing the school regularly.  She told them about the course and how important it was to her.   The week before she was booked to start workshops, she called me.  She had just heard from the school, 2 spots had opened up in before school care and they were offered to her, starting Monday morning! She was beyond excited and said that prior to coming here, she felt she didn’t have a lot of options, but now she had a chance to make a better life for herself and her children. Hearing the joy, excitement, and genuine happiness in her voice about starting was contagious and a wonderful moment for me as her Employment Counsellor!         - Christina

INTERVIEW: WHY I DO THIS WORK

LORI QUATTROCCHI I have worked for the City of London for 18 years and began Casework with the Ontario Works Program almost 14 years ago. Prior to Casework I worked in a few other departments, most notably Child Care Services, where I assisted families with the Child Care Subsidy Program.  It was here that I learned the value in helping families and decided that my next move would be in to Caseworker with Ontario Works. What I enjoy most about the job, are the people!  We meet individuals from all walks of life and from Countries all over the world, many people with stories to share.  I believe strongly that the agencies we partner with provide great tools to our clients and these tools can assist the clients in moving forward to employment. In particular, I think that the Skills Training Programs at Pathways are fantastic!  They offer specific program related training, certification and co-op experiences. We partner with so many great agencies to assist clients with targeted needs! The programs and workshops provided also help boost their skills and confidence and gives the clients a chance to build friendships and connections in the community. There is not one specific client story to share because there are actually so many that motivate me!  The biggest joy and motivation in this job is when I build a relationship with a client and they trust me to help them.  Within my limits, my goal is to help them navigate their way through their barriers and provide guidance and direction, so that they can move forward.  I am happy when clients see me as a “person” that is there to help and not just a “worker” behind a desk.  I love it when my clients are happy to share their good news and bad news and are appreciative for what I do, this means they trust me and we have built a relationship; that is was motivates me the most.
