Patcham Duck Fayre

Page 1

Welcome to our revived Patcham Duck Fayre and our free programme! We are thrilled to bring back this much loved Fayre to the village on 19th May and we want you all to come along and enjoy the day. Back in August 2018 a Patcham Facebook post asked the simple question ‘Who remembers the Duck Fayre?’ and within a matter of days over 100 people replied with fond childhood memories of kiddy rides on the Elms forecourt, the smell of candyfloss and BBQs, brass bands and the long wooden slide that used to run down the road opposite the Scout hut! Whilst we can’t revive the slide we can promise you the day will be full of fun and entertainment. At this point we want to say a big thank you to the Patcham 44th Scout group who started the event way back in the 1990’s and for giving us their blessing for the revival of the Fayre. The committee – formed in September 2018 - have been working hard to ensure the day is a success and we have tried to keep the ‘vintage-style’ approach but with a modern twist. We are truly grateful to the lovely people who live or have access to their houses along the Old London Road for welcoming us back and allowing the road to be closed for the day. To that end we ask you all to respect their property on the day and put your litter in the bins provided. As you will see from the programme we have extended the Fayre right along the Old London Road and into the grassy area in the Peace Gardens where there will be a big slide, a ’fun’ dog show, an ice cream van and a beer tent for thirsty parents next to a family area where you can stop and rest or have your picnic. Whilst in the park why not try your hand at some circus skills or let the children enjoy some planned activities in the marquee. Coles funfair will be providing rides along the Old London Road and there are craft, trade and bric a brac stalls lining the pavements. The village Memorial Hall will be converted to a tea room with indoor stalls and if you’re feeling competitive why not enter our baking and art competitions to be displayed in the Scout Hut.

Most of all, the day is about celebrating Patcham and all the good things that happen in our community. Any profits from the year will be donated to the Patcham Community Association fund for distribution to local causes, so come along between 11.am- 4.pm and have a lovely day! Don’t forget to join us at facebook.com/patchamduckfayre.

History of Patcham Duck Fayre As far as any of us can recall the Patcham Duck Fayre ran from the mid 1990’s until 2005. Originally run by the 44th Brighton Scout Group, the Duck Fayre took place in the shade of the village’s 300-year-old Elm trees (sadly no longer there) and along the Old London Road. The area in front of the Scout Hut and the Co-op became party central to the smells of candyfloss and BBQ food. With stalls, teas and cakes, games, rides, dance displays, silver bands and the occasional duck wandering round, it used to draw hundreds to the village every year. Nobody is quite sure why the Patcham Scouts called their local fete a Duck Fayre? Rumour has it ducks from the pond on the green outside All Saints Church (pictured above) used to wander down Church Hill into the village and be chased back up the hill with brooms, others talk of herding ducks into town to be sold at the market in the Old Steine? Another theory is that Patcham’s name derives from the Old English Peece or Pacce (pronounced Patch) meaning “watery” or “splashy” which would fit with the fact the watery spring and pond flowed into the Wellsbourne stream at the foot of Church Hill. Nevertheless it’s a great name for a great day! The Revival Committee managed to find a 1999 Duck fayre programme with thanks to Keith and Jeanette Fakes and looking at its contents we are pleased to report that this year’s Fayre has many similar features, but with a modern twist! We also salvaged some of the old Duck placards and signs from the back of the Scout hut which we have placed round the village to connect us to the fond memories we have of the Fayre. If you have time why not broaden your knowledge of Patcham by following out History trail devised by Liz Dwiar. You’ll be surprised how far back the stories of our village go, and if you find any references to ducks – let us know! We hope you enjoy! Patcham Duck Fayre - Sunday 19th May - 11am to 4pm. Page 7

Like the Bake Off, create a ‘duckingmarvellous’ bake to be the toast of the Fayre! Any cake, any size, but with a duck theme. Will yours wow the senses and avoid a soggy (pond) bottom?

Get baking with the kids! Make and decorate some quackers “duckcakes” and ruffle your competition feathers. Cakes must be ‘fairy cake-size’ with maximum 6 on any one plate. Will your tasty treats fit (in) the judge’s bill?

Keep your eyes peeled for some of nature’s mirth. Bring along your most amusing home-grown or store-bought vegetable for judging!

Arrange a bouquet of seasonal flowers from the garden. Something we’ll go quackers for! Bring your own container to be collected after the show.
