Prosumption There has been a marked development of users becoming more engaged in the production of services. In the words of Alvin Toffler, they have become ‘prosumers’ – producers as well as users of services. They are playing a critical role in areas from health and education to recycling and the energy management of the home. Some of this remains at the level of the individual household, but there are a growing number of mutual interest groups and support structures – such as reading groups, asthma networks, homework clubs, or gardening groups – as well as citizens engaging in formal activities through volunteering.
