Home wanted for La Siesta Charity Library 15 years ago Meg & Fred Wright started a Charity Library at their home in La Siesta during which time in the region of 55,000 Euros has been donated to local charities & other good causes. It started on a very small scale the first donation being 20,000 Pesetas to ARC on the 9th January 1999 Towards the purchase of a new ambulance. It took two years to raise this amount . It was not until 2003 when there was lots of publicity for the new Age Concern center & ambulance, which the library was going to support, that it really took off with lots of new customers going along to choose books. This meant that help was needed in booking in and out the books and a few local people were able to do this. Fred reckons that between 800 and 900 customers have used the library during this time. The library has also acted as social gathering for some and means of exchanging information on a variety of subjects. It will be greatly missed by lots of people in the community. There are approximately 10,000 books which as near as possible are kept in different categories .At present the library is open for 2 hrs a week during which time on average 360 books go out A charge of 25 cents per book is made for the hire. Of course it takes Fred a lot longer to put them out and back again in order ! With regret Megan and Fred will be closing the library on 4th December and are looking for a local charity to take this over. They will be assured of plenty of instant support. So if anyone knows of someone who has the room and can take on this commitment please call 96 678 5513. Megan & Fred would like to take this opportunity to thank their helpers, customers, and those that have supplied new books and hope that La Siesta Library can continue to help the local community.

Book Review By Nick Morton

A DARK TIME William Patrick Hackett It’s 1967-68, the time of ‘flower power’ and the peace movement, draft dodgers, bra- and draft-notice burning, riots and Vietnam. Alex Danza is a disillusioned psychiatrist working in the psychotic jungle of a New Jersey prison for the criminally insane. But he’s had enough, and intends to leave and enjoy a career change. Unfortunately, his most cunning patient, Malcolm, doesn’t want the good doctor to go. The conflict of minds between these two characters is quite chilling, and is the set up for devastating events that affect the prison and Danza. O’Neil, one of Danza’s private patients, stumbles away from suicide, saved by Angie, Danza’s ex fiancée. Angie, a political activist, goes on a peace mission to Vietnam and vanishes. O’Neil is drawn to Vietnam to discover what happened to Angie, and ends up in a Vietnamese monastery devoted to the obliteration of the self. This is a journey through madness and self-destruction, for Danza, O’Neil, Angie and Malcolm. Then O’Neil becomes embroiled with a soldier who creates a pagan mythology around Angie. And worse, roaming the jungle is a psychotic killer … It’s a dark time, where a strange redemption is at hand, an awareness of something beyond the nihilism of the period, something on the other side of good and evil. This is one of those big and long American novels that defy definition, with several characters seemingly disconnected until the connections are made none of which seem contrived. The odyssey we share with Danza and O’Neil is believable and traumatic. I certainly sensed a layer of nihilism running through the tale. What indeed is the point of a life? Maybe examining that question in the so-called ‘flower power’ period, where everything wasn’t all about ‘love’, gives us one answer; it was just as dark and nasty as any other decade. In fact, ultimately, life is to be lived. This book has the potential to become a powerful movie; a tour de force.

Freewheelers Another Ship, another Port. Freewheelers are certainly fond of their cruise liner visits. This is the third ship visit that Richard has set in motion although it has to be said that once agreed by the team Alan does most of the donkey work, sending out the information to 100 e-mail addresses, answering all the many questions that follow the initial announcement and issuing final instructions. Thanks Al. With members of the Jaguar Owners Club also invited to join, the quota of 50 was soon reached, in fact the number could have been doubled had the cruse liner authorities allowed it. An early start was required for this one and many commented they were not used to getting up before it was light. The start rendezvous was at Pilar de la Horradada. 9.00am! The Liner has an interesting history. Built in Wismar, East Germany in 1965 for the Soviet Union's Baltic Shipping Company and launched as the Alexandr Pushkin after the Russian poet. It operated on the Trans-Atlantic Leningrad - Montreal route. It had a strengthened hull in order to navigate the Baltic. After a refit in 1970s a disco was added making it the first Soviet ship to have one. In 1990 the ship was laid up in Singapore, 1991 sold to Oriental Lines who renamed her Marco Polo and took her to Greece where she had a near total reconstruction. The rebuild took 2 1/2 years to complete. In 2010 she was acquired by Cruise & Maritime Voyages and operates as a one class cruise ship out of Tilbury. Current tonnage: 22,080 GT, has a speed of 20.5 knots, a crew of 356 and a passenger capacity of 820. At a length of 176.28m and a beam of 23.55m it is the smallest cruise ship we have visited but undoubtedly the one with the most interesting history. After passing through passport control we were met on board by our hosts and directed to Scott's bar for welcoming drinks and an introduction to Marco Polo. The party was then split into three groups And given a guided tour of all the public areas and an idea of what life is like on the cruise Liner. Tour completed and questions answered it was off to lunch. An excellent 3-course meal of high quality and with wine a-plenty. Another fine outing with the Freewheelers. Check out the website:

Carp r us November will see some of the Clubs Anglers visiting Catalu単a again, for a different style of fishing to what we can expect to do on the Costa Blanca. The result of the Clubs Summer series of Matches is a win for Ian Dalzell so congratulations to him on a fine effort. In the next few weeks the Clubs Match fixtures for 2013 will have to be submitted to the Medio Ambiente, via the Fishing Federation for Approval. The water levels at the moment are very low and without rain or snow melt this winter the situation could become very desperate next year. Here in Valencia Province some of the Embalses are as low as 3% full or just over 97% empty. The Club held a Race Night with a Bring & Buy sale at the beginning of October with profits going to the Clubs Charity the Alzheimers Society. Thanks to all concerned for their help. Our Quiz nights are an ever popular event and the dates for these can be found on the Clubs web site at The Clubs home is at the Bar El Alto La Dolores which can be found just off the N332 between Guardamar and La Mata.

Quesada played host to a touring side from Tamworth England on Saturday 13-10-12 and all had a lovely morning. The visitors started off with a flourish and we had to work hard to contain them, but as time went on I think their journey and the heat caught up with them and Quesada had a good win on six rinks and lost on one. We had a light lunch and they went on their way and said they enjoyed it immensely.

The Rascals

The Rascals

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas for The Rascals Rehearsals are now well under way for the Rascals Christmas Show entitled "Disney Delights and Christmas Crackers". This years theme is designed to please everybody, the first half is set with children in mind, and includes songs and comedy from the popular Walt Disney story book. There will be bits from Aladdin, Snow White and Cinderella, whilst the second half is a glitzy Christmas Sing-A-Long spectacular featuring every-one's Christmas favourites. Rascals are renowned for their wonderful and professional costumes and this year the costume department have been working hard to maintain and improve that accolade. All Rascals ticket sales go to charity and over the last 19 years or so they have raised ten's of thousands of Euros for well deserved causes. The first show is in Los Montesinos on the 1st of December and the second at the Virgin Del Car-men Theatre in Torrevejca on the Tuesday December 11th. Please con-tact Sue on 96 678 4874 to reserve your tickets. Full details are available on Rascals new web site is

So Who Will It Be !!

Drivers Standings Driver

Sebastian Vettel

Fernando Alonso

Kimi Raikonen

Mark Webber

Lewis Hamilton

Jenson Button

Felipe Massa

Nico Rosberg

Romain Grosjean

Sergio Perez

With Kimi Raikonen’s surprise win in Abu Dhabi coming too late to give him a chance to win the title, only two drivers remain in the Fight, Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel & Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso. With only 2 Races & 50 points up for grabs it’s bound to be a close run finish. But with Sebastian’s reliability problems seemingly sorted out, he has to be favorite, but never right off Fernando’s chances, regarded by many as the best driver on the grid today if anyone can put a stop to Sebstian’s reign It ia Fernando Alonso. My personal opinion ? Go get him Fernando !!!!

Cantabile Female Voice Choir Cantabile female voice choir is a friendly and sociable group of ladies who take their music seriously. Their repertoire ranges from religious and classical to traditional, folk, popular songs and music from the cinema and shows. While their songs are predominantly English, they sometimes sing in Spanish, German, French and Latin. Musical Director, Jennifer, produces training CDs to help the ladies learn the music. They perform several concerts each year, and through their musical efforts, Cantabile has donated a fair amount of money for charity, for example: The Alzheimer’s Association, the Stroke Awareness Association, La Siesta and Campoverde Churches. They are now rehearsing for two Christmas performances: a formal concert on December 8th at La Siesta Church (entrance 5Euros) and on December 16th at Sacko’s Bar in El Limonar (4Euros) – this latter supporting Help the Aged and including loads of carols for all to sing. Both concerts begin at 7pm.Cantabile rehearses every Friday from 2-4.30 pm at La Siesta Church. If you are interested in joining the choir or receiving information on their concerts, Please contact Jennifer: tel: 966796866 or chairperson, Phyl: 965077457 email: Cantabile also has a website:
