Final call to enter ahead of World Water Day
With only a few days to go, the SA Post Office urges learners to get writing. The International Letter Writing Competition which concludes on 31 March 2013 highlights World Water month this March 2013. This year’s theme “Write someone a letter explaining why water is a precious resource,” ties in with the International Decade for Action “Water for Life” 2005–2015. In celebrating World Water Day, the SA Post Office in partnership with the Department of Water and Environmental Affairs, has issued a limited edition stamp set. The stamp collection captures the United Nation’s theme of International Year of Water Cooperation. The purpose of the stamp series is to highlight and create awareness for the world’s most precious resource - water. The SA Post Office invites learners up to
the age of 15 years to take part in the 42nd International Letter Writing Competition. The Universal Postal Union (UPU) runs the competition annually and the winning entry from each country competes for the title of “best letter writer”. The SA Post Office has provided additional incentives for participants with different prize categories. · The provincial winner walks away with R5 000 and R15 000 for their school. · The school with the most entries will win R10 000. · The national winner wins R15 000 for themselves and R25 000 for their school · The national winning letter will be sent to the UPU for consideration for the International Prize. “The entries for the highly anticipated letter writing competition are coming in fast. However, I would still like to appeal to those
learners who haven’t entered to get involved as this competition has been designed to enrich young minds with use of the written word,” commented SA Post Office Senior Manager Corporate Citizenship, Angela Abrahams. The competition which has been endorsed by Wildlife Environmental Society of South Africa (WESSA) has 10 water saving tips. • Only use your dishwasher and washing machine when it is full. Doing so can save more than 3000 litres per month! • Place a water bottle filled with water in your toilet cistern. It will reduce the amount of water used for flushing. • When cleaning out fish tanks, use the water for your plants instead of throwing it away. • Only water your garden early in the morning or in the evening to minimize water loss through evaporation.
• Shorten your shower by 2 minutes and you can save up to 500 litres a month! • Install a rain sensor on your sprinklers so that they don’t switch on when it rains. • Install water-efficient showerheads. They can save up to 3000 litres per month. • Spread a layer of organic mulch around your plants to retain moisture. • Turn off the tap while you’re brushing your teeth and you could save about 100 litres per month • Encourage your school and community to promote water conservation- start projects, and run events and competitions! Eienaars wat hul huise opknap om die waarde te verhoog voordat hulle hul eiendom verkoop, moet gewoonlik mooi dink watter opknappings die beste onmiddellike opbrengs op besteding gaan meebring, maar eienaars wat beplan om onbepaald in hul huise aan te bly het ’n baie wyer keuse om veranderings aan te bring wat in die tussentyd ook hul eie leefstyl sal verbeter. “Dit beteken natuurlik nie hulle kan hul huis goedsmoeds in ’n paleis omskep in ’n buurt waar die meeste ander eiendom beginnershuise is nie. Dit sou dan moeilik wees om sulke uitgawes te verhaal wanneer hulle wel eendag besluit om te verkoop, maar dit beteken dat hulle projekte wat ’n rukkie langer gaan neem om kostedoeltreffend te wees met vrymoedigheid kan aanpak. Die vyf beste opknappingsprojekte om lewenstandaard te verbeter sowel as om waarde oor die langer termyn toe te voeg volgens terugvoering van verbruikers is die volgende:
* Beter sekuriteit. Bring ’n alarmstelsel aan of verbeter ’n bestaande een. Bring buiteligte of ligte wat aanskakel as ’n stroom verbreek word aan. Versterk jou buite- en motorhuisdeure - jy sal groter gemoedsrus hê en jou huis sal groter aftrek onder voornemende kopers kry indien jy later besluit om te verkoop. * Beter energiedoeltreffendheid. Behoorlike isolering, ’n sonkrag-warmwatertenk, ’n hittepomp, ’n windturbine of selfs ’n reënwatertenk sal meebring dat jy in die toekoms elke maand geld aan water en krag gaan bespaar en dit sal ook ’n groot bonus vir toekomstige kopers wees. * Buitegeboue. As jy bediendekamers of selfs ’n motorhuis het wat in ’n mooi eenmanof eenslaapkamerwoonstel met ’n badkamer en kombuisgeriewe omskep kan word, behoort jy nie te huiwer nie. Jy kan die woonstel verhuur om die verband in die eerste jare van huisbesit te help af te betaal en dit later as ’n wooneenheid vir jou tieners, of as gasteverblyf of selfs as ’n tuiskantoor benut. Dit sal beslis aftrek onder toekomstige kopers kry, veral as jy in die tussentyd ’n veilige motorafdak opgerig het om die motorhuis te vervang. * Bykomende badkamer. As jy beplan om minstens die volgende vyf jaar die eiendom te bewoon, is dit die moeite werd om ’n byko-
mende badkamer te bou as die huis net een badkamer het - of om ’n derde badkamer in ’n huis met twee badkamers te bou. Dit is ’n redelike groot en duur projek maar dit sal almal se lewens vergemaklik - geen lang toue voor die badkamerdeur nie en geen getwis onder die kinders nie - en dit sal waarde toevoeg wat beslis oor die mediumtermyn verhaal kan word. * Tuiskantoor of studeerkamer. As jy reeds ’n onbenutte vertrek of buitegebou het wat as ’n kantoor toegerus kan word, is dit beslis ’n goeie idee. Indien nie, is dit die moeite werd om ’n rustige werkplek weg van leefruimtes af in te rig. So ’n ruimte kan benut word as ’n plek waar kinders ongehinderd huiswerk kan doen of as ’n mediasentrum vir die gesin.
Soveel mense werk deesdae van die huis af dat dit boonop in die toekoms hoogs waarskynlik ’n sterk verkoopspunt gaan wees .

JDD samel E-afval, speelgoed en klere in Jong Dinamiese Dames (JDD) is weer soos in die verlede besig om fondse in te samel met die insameling van e-afval, speelgoed en gebruikte klere vir ’n aantal projekte wat beplan word. Elektroniese afval sluit in enige ou stukkende elektriese toebehore soos broodroosters, drukkers, mikrogolfoonde ensovoorts. Al hierdie e-afval en klere word verkoop en die fondse teruggeploeg om behoeftes in die gemeenskap aan te spreek. Die speelgoed sal geskenk word aan skole
waar die kinders min/geen speelgoed het. Skenkings kan by Boomstraat 40 (die ingang by Harry’s Cheesecake) afgegee word weeksdae tussen 09:00 en 16:00 en Saterdae tussen 09:00 en 13:00. Daar kan ook gereël word om die skenkings af te haal deur 072 9932 339 te skakel. Die insameling word tot einde April gedoen.
