Though technology has solved many problems, we face some environmental issues which are unanswered. Changes in climate, drought, hail-storms, unseasonal rain are not natural miseries. Is Human interference responsible for these calamities? To get an answer, P.D. Mandal started Nisarg Science Research Project for students and common people.

NATURE TRAIL This year too PDM conducted Nature Trails to various locations. However in addition to local, long distance locations were added. Various biodiversity hotspots such as Ponds, Lakes, Creek, Dams, Plateaus, Scrubland and Western Ghats were included. Thus visits were arranged to Kaas Plateau, Bhimashankar, Matheran, Phansad, Nannaj, Bhigwan includimg local trails to parks, wetlands and creek in and around Thane. Climate change and its signs, biodiversityduring various seasons, winter migrants, butterflies, flowers, trees and all other aspects of nature were explained to the participants during the trails. Emphasis on conservation of the various habitats also was a part of the trails. Many experts who specialised in the various fields shared their knowledge with the participants. They explained the importance of each aspect like medicinal plants, trees, wetlands, forests, wildlife which included insects, amphibians and reptiles. There was an enthusiastic response from participants during all trails. Thus the aim of creating awareness about nature and the importance of conservation was achieved.

This year Paryavaran Dakshata Mandal decided to celebrate ‘World Environment Day’ on 5 th June with a difference. Thus the concept of conducting a study tour emerged. A ‘Khadi Yatra’ was planned as a part of the cleen creek movement. The catchy slogan coined by Prof. Athalye(V.P. of B. N. Bandodkar College of science) ‘Swachh Khadi Thanyachi, jababdaari sarvanchi’ was very apt. The day dawed and what made it more special was to see the Press reporters who actually participated in the half day study tour of thane creek. Around 50 participants gathered wearing specially made ‘water drop’ badges and holding placards with different awairness slogans. The excitement was palpable. After a short introduction by Prof. Walavalkar and Dr. Prasad Karnik, there was short felicitation of Pradeep Koli and Anant Tare - the representative head of the ‘koli’ community. The boats were then flagged off by Shri. Anant Tare and the crowd assembled. Each boat had experts who covered all of the biodiversity such as types of mangroves, creek water, birds, reptiles and other flora founa. What stuck the participants was the pollution level which could be judged just by looking at the colour of the water. What was hearting to see, was the welcome and snacks arranged by the local fishing community waiting to welcome the ‘Yatra’ at Vitawa and Diva gaon. Boats then passed through Airoli, Vashi,Bhandup,Vikroli and returned to Mithbunder. In all four different types of mangrove trees were seen in addition to 31 species of birds which included around 10,000 greater and lesser flamingos. It was indeed a fun-filled learning experience, which will remain attached in our memories for a long time.
