NOTICING THE UNNOTICED An awareness session

Last but not the least, the Common Krait was really a remarkable sight as it was the longest snake seen with milky white bands all over its body.

Benitta M. Babu

on snakes was held on 12th August 2017 to enlighten the teen minds about snakes, their importance in our community, about snake bites and also to unleash them from the popular myths and misconceptions. It was a thrilling hour where the snakes were displayed and fascinating facts were simultaneously shared. We had the opportunity of actually feeling almost each one of them which would probably be impossible for us if not for this event. Starting with the non venomous ones, the skittish rat snake as their name implies, rats are their favourite food. They are mostly found in fields where farmers like them to eat rodents. The slender Montane trinket snake had a distinctly banded forebody and is mostly found in thick evergreen forests as well as in towns. The Common kukri snake had glossy smooth scales and continous bands from neck to the tail. They mostly remain hidden in mounds, piles and under wooden logs. The green vine snake which is mildly venomous are long, slender yellowish green snakes that look just like vines, which provide them with excellent camouflage when they are up in the trees. The stout sand snake had a long, slender body and covered with smooth scales. Now coming to the venomous snakes, we all had equal elements of fright as well as excitement within. Starting with the Bamboo pit viper, it had lightly keeled scales with eyes having a vertical pupil. The Russel's viper was really huge and long with a dorsal

pattern consisting of 3 rows of black oval spots. They have really large fangs and are mostly found in hilly areas. The king cobra had a really prideful and at the same time an intimidating posture. They have an excellent sense of smell and night vision and also a really loud hissing sound. Last but not the least, the Common Krait was really a remarkable sight as it was the longest snake seen with milky white bands all over its body. By the end of this exceptional programme, the mindset about the yet scary and harmful creatures was absolutely transformed and we all gained a new perception about these creeping beauties.
