A JOURNEY THROUGH OUR OWN LITTLE WASTE WORLD - PART 3

Biomedical plastics can be autoclaved if separated at source just like biomedical glass and metal sharps. The last three categories, in fact, can be sold to recyclers if properly sterilized, shredded and washed. Such a management is possible only if biomedical waste is segregated at source.

Dr. Sanjay Joshi

The improper handling, treatment, storage, transport and disposal of waste can lead to serious problemswhich are highlighted below. The entire waste from a healthcare establishment, which includes noninfectious as well as infectious waste, if unsegregated and untreated is mixed with the rest of the waste in a healthcare establishment, will convert the entire noninfectious general waste (75-80%) also into infectious waste. The indiscriminate disposal of sharps within and outside institutions leading to occupational hazards like needle stick injuries, cuts, and infections among hospital employees, municipal workers and ragpickers. Injuries due to the sharp especially among rag pickers and hospital / municipal workers increases the incidence of Hepatitis B, C, E and HIV among these groups who transmit these diseases to others in the community and also succumb to such fatal diseases.

Undestroyed needles and syringes being circulated back to us (Recycling), through unscrupulous traders who employ the poor and the destitute to collect such waste forrepackaging and selling in the market. Reuse of disposable like syringes, needles, catheters, IV and dialysis sets are causing spread of infection from healthcare establishments to the general community. Disposal of hospital waste and veterinary hospital waste in municipal dumpsite resulting in animals especially cows feeding on the blood soaked cotton and plastics, and this in turn leading to diseases like bovine tuberculosis which through milk can infect humans. The indiscriminate dumping of untreated hospital waste in municipal bins increasing the possibility of survival, proliferation and mutation of pathogenic microbial population in the municipal waste. This leads to epidemics and

increased incidence and prevalence of communicable diseases in the community. Incidence and prevalence of diseases like AIDS, Hepatitis B&C tuberculosis and otherinfectious diseases increasing due to inappropriate use, storage, treatment, transport anddisposal of biomedical waste. Chances of vectors like cats, rats, mosquitoes, files and stray dogs getting infected orbecoming carriers which also spread diseases in the community. There is thus an urgent need to keep the infectious waste separate from non-infectious waste. This is because the infectious waste which only 10-15% is, if mixed with non-infectious waste which is 80-85% can render the entire waste infectious. Segregation of waste at the source of generation also helps in minimizing the amount of waste to be treated besides enabling more efficient treatment of each category of waste. For example, the anatomical waste and animal carcasses, if segregated, are the only types of waste which need to be incinerated according to the Biomedical Waste Rules. Similarly, biomedical plastics can be autoclaved if separated at source just like biomedical glass and metal sharps. The last three categories, in fact, can be sold to recyclers if properly sterilized, shredded and washed. Such a management is possible only if biomedical waste is segregated at source. General waste too can be managed effectively within healthcare establishments if separated into dry, non-infectious waste for recycling and wet waste for

composting. Scientific Waste management leads to - Cleaner and healthier surroundings. - Reduction in the incidence of hospital acquired and general infections. - Reduction in the cost of infection control within the hospital. - Reduction in the possibility of disease and death due to reuse and repackaging of infectious disposables. - Low incidence of community and occupational health hazards. - Reduction in the cost of waste management and generation of revenue through appropriate treatment and disposal of waste. - Improved image of the healthcare establishment and increase the quality of life.

38 parachute. Palms and mangrove species disperse their seeds through water. Seeds with hooked spines on their surface travel to places with the help of animals, which carry them on their fur. No wonder several species of Ficus (figs) grow on other plants, old structures and monuments despite of having very minute seeds, since they are excreted by birds and mammals feeding on them. In fruits like nutmeg with aril (present inside the fruit) is attractive to the birds which gobble the seeds along with the aril. This aids in seed dispersal. Once dispersed, germination takes place immediately if the conditions are adequate or the seed remains dormant till everything is just right. Orchid seeds do not have reserve food material and have to depend on a fungus to germinate. The location decides whether the embryo lives to see the light of the day or dies away. The appropriate surroundings help in seed germination. Moisture, temperature and sunlight are the drivers which help in growth of the plumule and radicle from a seed. With adequate moisture, the tough seed coat withers off and helps in sprouting. The seed always waits for the favourable conditions; here is where the seed dormancy plays a role. Mangrove species exhibit vivipary wherein the seed germinates while still in the fruit, attached to the parent plant. The root developed by the seedling penetrates the soil immediately after it gets detached from the parent plant. Dispersal to wrong locations can be harmful too. The islands on the globe have to be vigilant and take every

precaution from invasion of exotic seeds which may threaten their wildlife. Hence, the tourists are checked thoroughly. Seed banks An idea to preserve the seeds was born when scientific community realised that alteration of ecosystems and climate change is taking a toll on many species. Plants were being pushed to the brink of extinction and the concept of seed bank was born. One such is the Millennium Seed Bank project at Kew (London). The largest ex situ plant conservation programme in the world focuses on preserving seeds. They have successfully conserved 13% of the world’s wild plant species. Uses Most of the human diet consists of seeds like the cereals – rice, wheat, jowar, nachni; pulses – tur, rajma, matki; spices – poppy, mustard, pepper. Seed of sunflower, safflower yield cooking oils. Oil from castor seeds is used as an insecticide. Some seeds are pretty and are woven into ornaments such as necklaces, armlets, anklets and bracelets. In 1985, Sir David Attenborough buried a time capsule in the foundations of the Princess of Wales Conservatory. It contains seeds of basic food crops and endangered species and won’t be opened until the year 2085. The seeds of plants it holds may have become rare or extinct till then. As we end the last article in the series titled ‘the Plant life’, the incredible journey in the Life of Plants begins here....
