*Distribution of Eco friendly bags at the exit CSR Initiative - Looking Ahead: Our campaign “Say No to Plastic” will be launched during the Ghantasala 96 anniversary in Oct 2018. This will be an effort to convert our audience into goodwill ambassadors, who will carry the message through 960 eco-friendly bags, that will be distributed among the audience, well-wishers and sponsors. Last year Kala Pradarshini distributed 950 indigenous saplings, in a small effort to mitigate global warming, on the occasion of the Ghantasala 95 anniversary celebrations.
With an urge and motivation to do something about the lack of younger artists taking up Indian Arts, we decided to promote young artists and provide them with opportunities to perform. The cultural wing of Kala Pradarshini was formed under the guidance of Hon’ble Justice (Late) Shri K.S.Bakthavatsalam. Since 1998, the cultural wing of Kala Pradarshini has organized several thousand performances - Vocal, Dance and Instrumental, in an effort to preserve and promote the cultural heritage of traditional art forms. Each year festivals are organized showcasing talented youngsters and eminent international and national artists to perform. We curate three main festivals annually: - our Annual Arts Festival, Ghantasala Samarpanam & Puraskar and Thyagaraja Aaradhana. Kala Pradarshini is proud to have introduced several art forms for the Chennai audiences. We have actively promoted other Indian dance forms apart from Bharathanatyam, such as Kuchipudi, Odissi, Sattriya, Kathak, Mohiniattam, Kathakalli. Equal importance is given to musicians as well. It has not been an easy path financially as an NGO, however with determination, we strive to work harder and overcome obstacles. We are thankful to the support of the Ministry of Culture, Govt of India, Sangeet Natak Akademi, patrons, generous corporate sponsors, parents of the enrolled students, volunteers and the Ghantasala family’s personal contributions, without which, we would not be able to serve and give back to the
society in a meaningful way. With sufficient funding we will be able to mobilize more art forms and encourage more in the next generations to continue and prevent an art form from dying. Donate/Support Us www.kalapradarshini.com
GHANTASALA Correction: fifth paragraph- It should be UN, not UNO -
While the world and the music lovers showered tributes to the legendary singer, while Universities and roads were named after his genius, while temples and charities were founded by several, since 2007, his daughter-in-law Parvathi Ravi Ghantasala, believed it was better late than never to pay a family tribute to the legend himself. The “Ghantasala Samarpanam” was founded, which showcased his songs in various dance forms. This further went to prove that his songs and compositions were suited for all forms of classical dance.
After 10 years of immense success of the Ghantasala Samarpanam, we instituted an award “Kala Pradarshini Ghantasala Puraskar” from the Ghantasala family, to the contributors in the field of arts and philanthropy.
The inaugural awards were presented to Dr. S.P. Balasubramaniam, Dr. Padma Subramaniam and Dr. Nallikuppusamy Chetti. Further 95 artists of Kala Pradarshini performed for the evergreen hits. Kala Pradarshini being in the midst of young generation also believes in other sustainable fields and in that effort distributed 950 sapplings
The 96th Anniversary is being curated in equal grandeur with a plan towards the centenary celebrations. More details of this event in October coming soon.
Saint Thyagaraja – Poetry in Dance
Kala Pradarshini pioneered a unique way of honoring the prolific composer Saint Thyagaraja through Dance. The idea of showcasing the composer’s “Pancharatna” through dance was revolutionary and novel. We sailed through a lot of criticism and broke the perception that this tribute could be paid through music only. Kala Pradarshini went on to make Thyagaraja Aaradhana through dance one of the most differentiated ways of paying tribute. Over the years, other organizations and artists have replicated this idea in order to spread the richness of the Thyagaraja philosophy.
Annually, since 1998, we curate five eminent artists/institutions who are carefully choosen to present each of the pancharathna kritis, all in one evening. Given the choice of performers, this is one of the most looked out for events.
We sincerely thank our Venue collaborator Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan every year to support this endeavor.
