What Triggers The Brake Pad Sensor?

What is a brake pad sensor? A brake pad sensor is an indicator that alerts you about your vehicle’s brake system. They are designed to break or complete a circuit once the brake pad has worn enough for the sensor to contact the brake rotor. Brake pads are the components in the braking system that create friction to slow your vehicle. They are found in the brake calipers. These function by pressing against the disc brake rotors with friction material to slow the wheels, eventually coming to a halt. With time and continuous usage, the brake pads will eventually wear out over time and need to be replaced. Learn these few steps to ensure if you are having a failing brake pad sensor.

1. Noisy brakes Do your brake pads make noises? This is the most common symptom. If the brake pads have excessive dust buildup, it causes vibration and squealing when the pedal is applied or let off. When your brake pads squeal it can also mean that the pads have worn down to a point where the wear sensor has come into contact with the rotor. Severely worn brake pads will produce a sort of scraping sound when the metal contacts between the brake pad backing plate and the rotor.

2. Vibrating pedal Pulsating or shaky brake pedals is a another sign of failing brake pads. Intensely worn pads can cause the pedal to vibrate when the brakes are applied. If this happens, know that there might be a problem with the rotors. In such a case, it is sensible to take your vehicle to a certified technician to fully examine.

3. Poor brakes Overheated brake pads can slow your vehicle as well. During heavy braking situations, the force and heat generated by braking are presumably higher and thus might lead to hazards if not fixed sooner.

4. Broken pad wear sensor cables Installation should be done carefully. If the pads are placed on the wrong side during installation, the wear sensors might break. The breakage can also be a result of mechanical damage during operation. Sometimes broken cables can also damage the instrument panel, preventing the driver from seeing the warning indicator suggesting the replacement of the pads even if the wear sensor is activated. The damaged cables can lead to extreme wear of the discs and pads, eventually disabling the brake system. Replacing the worn out sensors with a new one can be a solution to this problem.

5. Low-level wet boiling point Paying attention is the key here. Check the level of brake fluid in the reservoir and the wet boiling point of brake fluid while inspecting the brake pads. If the wet boiling point of brake fluid is low, it indicates large wear of the pads and discs or drums as well as leakage in the hydraulic system. Only the wet boiling point will give you a true indication of the brake fluid condition. Once the wet boiling point is less than the required allowable value, the brake fluid must be changed.
