LIVE FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT J WINNER: Seattle Children’s Theatre
Now in its 44th season, the award-winning Seattle Children’s Theatre is one of the 20 largest regional theaters in the country, and voters like how it empowers young people to make new discoveries about the world around them. Under artistic director Courtney Sale, the 2018–19 season should be brilliant, with productions of “The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show,” “And in This Corner: Cassius Clay,” “The Velveteen Rabbit” and “The Diary of Anne Frank.”

Seattle Children’s Theatre
The youngest of fans love to rock out with Caspar Babypants, aka Chris Ballew, the lead singer of the Seattle rock band The Presidents of the United States of America. He’s made 14 albums that contain his kid-style (but parent-friendly) music, and his packed shows are fun for the whole family. StoryBook Theater won voter approval for its sensoryfriendly performances specifically designed for individuals with autism, neurodiversity, Asperger syndrome, Down syndrome and other sensory-processing disorders and special needs. Presented at five venues in the Seattle area, these 55-minute musicals are a hit with kids (ages 3–10) who love catchy songs and clever stories. Kindie rock fans schedule nap time around shows by The Not-Its for good reason: The group’s up-tempo shows keep everybody happily screaming for more. Voters agree that there are few things better than enjoying live music at ZooTunes at Woodland Park Zoo. Kids can dance, parents can picnic, and everyone (even the howler monkeys) can sing along with the musicians playing beneath the zoo’s gorgeous tree canopy.
RAINY-DAY REFUGE J WINNER: KiDiMu — Kids Discovery Museum
The vote tally tells us that hopping a ferry to Bainbridge Island for a visit to KiDiMu — Kids Discovery Museum is always a good idea. This hands-on, please-touch children’s museum brings sunshine to rainy days. The Waldorf-inspired Totally Tot space is a calm oasis for the youngest of visitors and their caregivers. And it’s a toss-up when it comes to deciding who likes making pictures more — kids or parents? — with the giant, colorful pegs on the Light Wall in the museum’s Science and Literacy Hall.
On the Kitsap Peninsula, Ahoy Kitsap wins buckets of votes for its active climbing structures, with a café right next to it, so adults can relax. Readers love Ahoy for its all-day-play admission policy, its positive staff, cleanliness, great play equipment and amazing birthday parties. Voters with the very young in mind adore PlayHappy Café, a Lynnwood indoor play space for kids newborn–6. Of course, it’s easy to love PlayHappy, with its separate space for infants and crawlers, a café with free Wi-Fi, enrichment classes and fabulously decorated birthday-party rooms. Roo’s World of Discovery is a family mainstay because it’s both a place for children and a community for parents and caregivers. Beyond open hours for play in its Montessori-inspired play space, it offers low-sensory hours, parent groups, play groups, workshops and even coworking opportunities, during which your kids play, supervised, while you cross off the to-dos on your list. A North Seattle find, Seattle ReCreative is part “creative reuse” retailer and part community art center. It blends teaching skills such as fine art, woodworking and sewing with a modern-day mission to find new life for materials that would usually end up in a landfill. Shop for secondhand crafty supplies; sign up for a kid, adult or family class; or drop by with your littles for art-infused playtime. >> ParentMap Family Directory 2018 • 5

With its frequent appearances across camps and classes categories over the years, we know you think Wilderness Awareness School absolutely rocks. You love that your kids foster a connection to nature while acquiring practical skills, such as tracking and recognizing edible plants. “The counselors and the program completely engaged my son,” according to one mom’s testimonial. “For a high-energy boy, he embraced learning to be quiet and observant in the woods.”
FINALISTS Your votes for South Puget Sound’s Camp Gallagher speak to how much you appreciate these confidencebuilding overnight camps for middle school and high school kids. Campers not only engage in classic summer-camp activities like boating and crafting, they also practice leadership by planning their own group excursions. “No better place to relax and enjoy being unplugged so you can play with your kids!” wrote in one Golden Teddy voter. When a camp begins with a two-hour, fun-filled 4:55 PM “Da Boata” ride to its Vashon Island locale, it’s easy to see why campers adore Camp Sealth — Camp Fire of Central Puget Sound. Campers can attend Classic Camp, Horse Camp or an array of specialty camps, including Nocturnal Camp, during which campers stay up all night and sleep all day. Your votes showed serious love for the Girl Scouts of Western Washington’s many camp options, noting how its programs impart a major girl-power message to your tweens and teens. Choices include day or overnight camps, a huge slate of interesting specialty camps, horse camps and leadership camps at locales

WILD NATURE CAMPS
J WINNER: Wilderness Awareness School
Perhaps your kids were apprehensive about their first camp experience, but Wilderness Awareness School has topped this category so many times that we’re betting your kids are begging to go again. The organization’s programs give a great many city kids a huge dose of nature, along with the skills needed to really relish their time outdoors. Day camps and programs for young kids begin with basic skills, while overnight camps and expeditions for teens impart serious survival techniques. And parents love the exceptional staff: “The counselors seem to really ‘get’ the kids and the fact that each child is an individual and has different needs,” says one parent in a website testimonial.
FINALISTS Parents can’t stop talking about Seattle Parks and Recreation’s Community Nature Programs. Campers learn about Pacific Northwest ecology through hands-on activities at multiple locales, including Magnuson Park, Camp Long and Carkeek Park. parentmap.com/golden-teddy
Professional environmental educators introduce kids to Seattle’s largest city park at Discovery Park Nature Daycamp (Seattle Parks and Recreation). Four distinct habitats and 8 miles of trails make this camp the perfect place for kids to learn about nature without leaving the city limits. Voters already know Nature Vision day camps foster a love of nature and environmental stewardship in every camper. This summer marks a growth year for this organization, with new day camps in Bothell, Shoreline and on Mercer Island joining the already robust lineup of camps. Parents rave about the caring yet challenging environment at Seattle Audubon Nature Camp. While campers have been exploring nature at this camp’s Magnuson Park locale for more than 30 years, this year parents can also choose offerings at its new location at Explorer West Middle School in West Seattle.

Camp Gallagher, a favorite among teens, continues to garner votes for its
awesome family camp weekend. The South Sound gem offers sunny, sandy adventures plus swimming, crafts, campfires and all the best summer camp fare — for the whole family. At Cazadero Performing Arts Family Camp Northwest, adults rekindle their enthusiasm for music or theater while children explore their new interest in the arts. For more than 30 years, families have been making memories at “Caz Northwest,” located on Puget Sound’s beautiful Key Peninsula between Olympia and Gig Harbor. “An amazing way to connect as a family — something for everyone!” writes one happy camper. Family getaways at the North Cascades Institute Environmental Learning Center offer a premium “camping” experience, no tents necessary. Participants sleep in comfy rooms, eat healthy, family-style meals in the dining hall and soak up the stunning North Cascades scenery all day long. Families take a leap with group courses offered at SANCA — School of Acrobatics & New Circus Arts, including ones focused on the flying trapeze, youth trampoline, Baby & Me and the unicycle. “My niece absolutely loves the place and can’t wait to spend another summer there,” writes one Golden Teddy voter. >>

Families of kids with serious medical conditions love Camp Korey for the carefree fun it offers to campers. While medical personnel on staff support campers, children can forget about their illnesses by focusing on adventurous activities like boating, horseback riding and “stage night.” Your votes showed your adoration for Camp Prov, a program that welcomes both kids with special needs as well as their siblings, ages 2–10. Skilled staff and teenage “buddy” volunteers assist campers, so everyone can partake in typical summer camp fun: swimming, music, nature, storytelling and more. Every Body’s Circus program at SANCA — School of Acrobatics & New Circus Arts offers individual lessons, group lessons, inclusive classes, and camps that benefit children and adults with a range of special needs. The school knows circus is a therapeutic art and hand-craft its offerings 9:26 to PM fit participants’ needs, including learning differences, behavioral issues, trauma- and mood-related disorders, sensory and processing issues, ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, hemiparesis, spina bifida, visual or hearing impairment and other physical challenges. Voters are glad that Social Skillz Theatre School of Tacoma is a place where all neurodiverse children and teens (3rd–12th grade) can learn together. AMAZING ARTS CAMP OR CLASS
PITCH-PERFECT MUSIC CAMP OR CLASS
J WINNER: Sunshine
Winner Seattle ReCreative attracted your votes for its art classes and camps, which emphasize process over result. Kids already are explorers who like to experiment, and Seattle ReCreative gives them the tools, materials — lots of them recycled — and the space to unleash their creativity. Among summer camp themes is one that focuses on constructing rockets, marble runs and kaleidoscopes, while another combines art history with making art, and each day includes outside time if weather permits. Seattle ReCreative offers workshops and programs for kids and adults all year long.
FINALISTS Arts Aloft earned your votes for its classes, which
let kids ages 4–12 experience the pleasure of artistic experience while learning the techniques of a grand master. Summer camp themes revolve around topics that kids love, including The Magic Tree House, Percy Jackson, Minecraft and Harry Potter. Your votes showed high regard for Early Masters Art School, an art history school for kids ages 8 and older in Seattle. Summer camps and workshops in art history and painting focus on myriad artists and styles, and students bring home wall-ready masterpieces for their adoring (parent) audience. Parents rave about the interactive learning, music and arts programs offered at Illumination Learning Studio. Illumination offers a compelling cultural, performing and fine arts curriculum, which includes instruction in music, drama, voice, art, yoga and language. Parents and kids love the three-week sessions at Summer Fun, a performing and visual arts day camp for kids ages 7–12, with locations in various Seattle schools. One parent testimonial reads, “They are able to harness the energy and passion of the kids. The production at the end of the three-week camp will astonish you with humor, dance, puppets, costumes and music.” parentmap.com/golden-teddy
Voters sent in a mountain of accolades to make Sunshine Music Together a winner yet again in this category. SHOPPING + SERVICES
From safety equipment to toys and clothes, kids need a lot of stuff. Thankfully, these reader-sourced recommendations for the best stores and services take the pain out of shopping. Read on for the places that offer quality customer service and great selection to help parents find what they need when they need it. — Gemma Alexander
COOL KIDS’ CLOTHING SHOP J WINNER: Kids on 45th
When it comes to kids’ clothes, readers tell us that consignment is the way to go. This year’s winner, Kids on 45th, adds a new twist on secondhand attire. Yes, you can browse the store in Wallingford (you guessed it, on 45th) and you can shop online. But you can also subscribe for seasonal wardrobe updates through a customizable subscription box for each kid. You choose the types of items you’d like in each shipment and update your child’s sizes each quarter. It’s like Christmas morning four times a year.
ESSENTIAL BABY OR MATERNITY SHOP J WINNER: Village Maternity
Since 1983, Village Maternity has been independently owned and operated in Seattle, with a second generation joining the well-loved University District shop in 2012. Village Maternity’s carefully curated selection helps mothers-to-be look and feel their best in clothing that is as fashion-forward as maternity wear gets. Jellycat stuffed animals and clothes that are as soft and comfy as they are cute delight babies. The shop doesn’t neglect practicalities, though; staff are trained to help customers find the best-fitting nursing bras, and the store carries a wide selection of pump parts.
FINALISTS Tacoma’s Channing Baby & Co. is the newest addition to the region’s high-end baby boutiques. The owners of this fresh, tightly curated shop are parents of toddlers themselves, and they refuse to compromise on either form or function. Everything in their parent-friendly shop is as stylish as it is practical. Also a finalist for Cool Kids’ Clothing Shop, Hopscotch Consignment Boutique in Bellevue is a favorite for maternity wear and baby supplies. Shoppers love the stylish, current- >>

Bellevue readers love Hopscotch Consignment Boutique, which sells seasonal, stylish children’s clothes for ages newborn–10. As one happy shopper said, “Love love love this place!! . . . This is definitely my go to consignment store in the Eastside.” You can preview and even buy some of the best items online, but visit the Bellevue Plaza store to see the full inventory. There’s no disputing the consensus among readers that the thrice-yearly Jack & Jill Consignment Sale is “the best sale of its kind” in the area. The sale, held at the Lynnwood Convention Center, features stylish baby and kids’ clothing, gear, furnishings and more. The next event is Sept. 28–30. Rhea Lana’s Consignment Event is a nationally run, locally organized seasonal consignment event, so it takes a little planning to attend. Sign up for its e-news to be notified when an event in Tacoma is scheduled or shop its new online store for currently available items. Issaquah’s consignment store Small Threads for Kids emphasizes quality and timeless style in the seasonally appropriate children’s clothing it sells. Loyal customers praise
the bargain prices and the cheerful, we’re-all-family-here atmosphere. “You can find some really nice, high-end clothes and other quality items there for kids without spending a fortune,” says one shopper, explaining why consigners choose store credit over cash payments.

season maternity clothes and baby gear, which includes strollers, high chairs, backpacks, swings, pack-and-plays, baby seats and toys. Select items are available online, but the store in Bellevue Plaza has a much wider selection. Another Cool Kids’ Clothing finalist that also hits the mark in this category is the thrice-yearly Jack & Jill Consignment Sale at the Lynnwood Convention Center. It doesn’t sell maternity wear, but its baby clothes, toys, diaper bags, feeding supplies, strollers, car seats and other baby gear are too good to pass up. The next event is Sept. 28–30. South Sound families love Rhea Lana’s Consignment Event, voting it a finalist for both kids’ clothes and maternity and baby gear. It takes a little planning to attend, so sign up for its e-news to be notified when an event in Tacoma is scheduled or shop its new online store for currently available items.

You won’t find the latest name-brand, must-have toy of the season at Top Ten Toys. Something else you won’t find? Toy guns. Commercialism and violence are replaced by old-fashioned delights, such as puppets and train sets, at this longtime favorite and multiyear Golden Teddy winner. Kids and parents love the store’s broad selection of thoughtfully curated toys and books that promote learning and creativity. This local establishment also offers playtimes and story times, a free create-your-own-gift-wrap area, toddler play area and a friendly staff with a mission to “keep healthy play alive.”
FINALISTS With locations in Kenmore and Redmond, Snapdoodle Toys is as beloved by parents as by kids. Besides offering a chance to explore educational and imaginative toys, Snapdoodle gives families around the Sound “Crafternoons” and drop-in art classes. And don’t worry about becoming parched while exploring; Snapdoodle offers a complimentary latte or cup of tea to shoppers, along with free gift wrapping. When it comes to books, The Elliott Bay Book Company, on Seattle’s parentmap.com/golden-teddy
Capitol Hill, is hard to beat. Kids might not care about the daily readings and author events, but they will love the children’s book section, which is larger than some bookstores and anchored by a castle worthy of childhood fantasy. Teens will appreciate the Elliott Bay Underground, the bookstore’s convention-breaking, teen-led young adult book group. Third Place Books was founded in 1998 in Lake Forest Park with the intention to create a community around books and the ideas inside them. Twenty years later, the community has grown to include locations in Ravenna and Seward Park. In each location, Third Place has achieved its goal, offering a fun, comfortable and safe place for people of all ages to browse, relax, read, eat, laugh, play and talk. Featuring a variety of unique educational toys for all ages, White Horse Toys, in Issaquah, is touted for its quirky charm and knowledgeable staff. “The space is really well-organized, which I think is important because toy stores can be really overwhelming,” says one reviewer. That’s especially true when you have more than 17,000 toys in a 3,000-square-foot space.
SUPER KIDS’ SALON J WINNER: Kids Club
Haircuts and wiggly children — what could possibly go wrong? Kids Club, in Seattle’s University Village, turns a potential catastrophe into a pleasant experience. Sharing space with Kids Club’s toy and clothing store, the salon features car-shaped chairs and junglethemed murals. “The staff is friendly and patient!” says one reviewer. “They also offer toys and treats to the kids — and a balloon when we’re done!” Whether the challenge is your child’s hair type or their temperament, the salon at Kids Club can get you both through the process tearfree. Its $34 half-hour hair tutorials are priceless for many families.

Kids Club and Salon
FINALISTS “My kids won’t get their hair cut anywhere else,” says one mom about Sharkey’s Cuts for Kids, which has locations in both Bellevue Square and Seattle’s Ballard Blocks. Besides the usual car-shaped seats, it has added Xbox stations, a Tween Lounge and spa parties to the mix of amenities. Discounts for cash payments, military families and parents who get their hair cut with their kids sweeten the deal even more than the free balloon and lollipop included with each haircut. The “we’re ready when you are” walk-ins-only approach of Snip-its kids’ salon in Bellevue is welcomed by any parent who has had to deal with a last-minute change of plans brought on by a child’s sudden stomach bug or a meltdown. The kid-focused approach is equally in evidence once you arrive: Kids get a welcome video, video games and when they’re all done, a prize. In addition to haircuts, services include ear piercing and lice prevention. Snip-its stylists also receive special training to meet the needs of children with autism in conjunction with Autism Speaks — need we say more? Frances Grace Salon, in Mill Creek, is a fullservice salon with a dedicated kids’ room, where kids younger than 10 can enjoy toys, games, videos and a mechanical elephant ride. Two of the salon’s stylists specialize in handling kids who have a hard time with haircuts. One happy reviewer says, “Our kids used to hate going to the barber. Now they all want to go first.” It’s the one place nobody likes to go to, but that everybody is grateful for. Lice Knowing You, with multiple locations around the area, won’t give you or your kid a stylish new ’do. But when that red “lice” letter comes home with your child from school, the salon’s $15 Wet Head Lice Check will give you peace of mind that you’re lice-free. And if you aren’t, its staff will get rid of the lice for you ($100/hour, billed in 15-minute increments) with a 30-day guarantee. Families appreciate Lice Knowing You’s no-nonsense, nonjudgmental approach and the education (including tips for avoiding future problems) that comes with the service. >>

FABULOUS FURNITURE SHOP FOR KIDS
Wallingford is the place to go for bedroom furniture today. From organic crib mattresses to solid wood bunk beds, you’ll find what you need for your kid’s room. A small children’s play area with books and toys under the staircase will keep kids occupied while you’re looking. The Old Cannery Furniture Warehouse in Sumner may be off the beaten path, but it’s worth the drive just for the unique shopping experience, even if you don’t need new furniture. A hobbit-style fudge factory in an ancient tree and suspended G scale trains traveling through the showrooms are sure to please the kids, while parents appreciate interest-free financing, classic styles and down-to-earth prices.
J WINNER: IKEA
O COURTESY IKEA.COM PHOT
The circumstances of college life — constant change and tight budgets — apply equally to kids’ rooms. So, it’s no wonder that parents return to their first furniture store when shopping for their kids. IKEA furniture looks good, costs little and lends itself to creative adaptation as kids’ interests and abilities change. Now that delivery starts as low as $29, you don’t even have to drag the littles through the store’s labyrinthine aisles to get the goods anymore. But if you do visit the Renton store, there’s still the prospect of Swedish meatballs and Daim candy bars to keep kids moving forward.
FAVORITE FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHER
FINALISTS In past years, readers praised the good design and high quality of the classic, vaguely nostalgic, yet practical Land of Nod furniture collections. Now Nod has been folded into the Crate&Barrel brand as Crate&kids. Families seem to agree that the company has achieved its goal of combining “Crate&Barrel’s modern, elevated style with the heart, lively spirit and energy kids are made of.” A bonus? The new line seems to hit a somewhat lower price point. It’s natural for new parents to turn to their favorite grown-up furniture store for their kids’ rooms, especially when the offerings are as charming as those from Pottery Barn Kids. Pottery Barn Kids has the same clean, relaxed style as its grown-up counterpart. Personalization through monogramming and upholstery options are especially appreciated in spaces as intimate as the nursery. Its West Elm collaboration collection is a playful variation on the mid-century modern style. It may have started out as a waterbed store in 1972, but our savvy readers know that the family-owned Bedrooms & More on 45th St. in

Seattle-based artist Whitney Hardie specializes in the unique service of birth photography. Inviting someone into your birthing space is a big decision, and incredibly personal. Hardie remains on call for her clients and stays with them from labor through the first hour or two of the baby’s life, quietly capturing the moments of strength and emotion that are a part of every unique labor. In a few weeks, the new family receives about 120 photos and a 20-page photo book.
FINALISTS Forget the department store photography studio; Puget Sound–area families want truly memorable portraits. That’s why you voted Kiley Riffell Photography, run by a photojournalist whose work has been used by BBC Nature, NPR and “Science” magazine, among your favorite family photographers. One mom says, “Kiley is so talented and fun to be around.

run by husband-and-wife team Ophelia and Chris de Serres just off State Route 99. Although The Inc. opened its doors less than two years ago, it’s already a two-time Golden Teddy finalist. Voters love its modern approach to child care, which includes a drop-in preschool, a coworking space down the hall and a Cowork/Coplay Community Room for the very young. Families rave about the range of options offered by The Nest. This Woodinville-based center has a preschool program for kids ages 2 and a half years old through pre-K, four hours of daily enrichment classes for kids ages 2 and a half to 6, and classes for kids as old as age 9 during school breaks. Across the street from Alderwood Mall, Time4Kidz Playcare is not only convenient, it’s a fun place for drop-off, high-quality child care for toddlers up to age 10. Offerings include before- and after-school care, Saturday “kids’ night out,” and language and ballet classes.

Returning winner Seattle Nanny Network has been solving child-care dilemmas for more than 20 years. This network aims to be the “HR arm” for child-care professionals, offering both nannies and the families they serve peace of mind. And as your kids grow up, it’s good to know this network recently expanded its mission by adding a scheduled ride service for kids, for those parents who need less than a nanny but more than a taxi service.
FINALISTS CareWorks takes the inherent stress out of finding a perfect caregiver
for a growing family. As one website testimonial reads, “CareWorks made a very difficult transition — from home to work — a pleasurable one. The process and the results greatly helped to abate inevitable anxieties about leaving my baby with a caregiver.” Readers tell us they are more than happy to leave the child-care vetting and scheduling to Poppy, whether they’re looking for a nanny or date-night sitter. The Nanny Consultant, aka Kyla LopezPerkins, provides a one-stop shop when it comes to finding nannies, household managers, doulas, night nannies and newborn care specialists in the Greater Seattle area. Bellevue-based West Coast Nannies touts itself as a “helping hand for the modern age.” Indeed, one website testimonial says hiring this agency “will be one of the best decisions you will Roo’s World of Discovery make for your children or your career!” >> ParentMap Family Directory 2018 • 33

POSITIVE PARENTING GROUP OR CLASS J WINNER: PEPS
A Golden Teddy winner for three years in a row, PEPS (Program for Early Parent Support) has helped Puget Sound–area parents adjust to parenting for more than three decades. These neighborhood-based parent groups increase family wellness while growing community between new moms and dads.
FINALISTS Since 1980, Kirkland’s Lake Washington Toddler Group has helped build strong and healthy families by providing parents and toddlers with a semi-structured classroom environment in which they play, learn and create together. For families with children ages newborn to 5 years old, South Seattle College Cooperative Preschools offers affordable preschool classes at five neighborhood locations. Parents and children learn together in these classrooms, and parents love getting to know other parents while kids have their first school experience. Amy Martino of Sun and Moon Child blends her background in child psychology, various professional certifications and ancient wisdom to help parents raise physically and emotionally healthy, confident children. She uses astrology to gain a deeper understanding of a child’s needs for nurturing, while teaching parents the skills needed to foster deep connections with their child. Play comes first at Woodinville Toddler Group, a cooperative parenting education program that serves parents and kids ages 5 months to 4 years. Parents play and learn alongside their children, and every classroom fosters community connections that help build strong families.
