The Paranormal Top 10 List
Top 10 Reasons I’m Taking the Month Off from Top 10 Lists By Karen Frazier, South Sound Paranormal Research & Paranormal Underground Radio
ometimes you just need a break. This is especially true when one’s major writing format is in numbered lists of 10. So this month, I’m taking time off from my top 10 list, and here are my top 10 reasons why. 10. I’ve been abducted by aliens. Saw lots of lights in the sky. Was flung high in the air. Okay, I admit, I was in the back yard on a clear night with a full moon and jumping on the trampoline at the time, but it could have been aliens. 9. I think Bigfoot is pooping in my backyard, and I need to investigate. This isn’t nearly as farfetched as you might imagine. You see, we’ve had a spell of rainy days, and our grass was nearly chest-high. When Techie McScienceGeek was finally able to mow, he noticed that something rather large has been leaving large piles in our yard.
4. I think we have poltergeists. I noticed a few tiny specks of food and stuff moving rapidly across my counters straight toward an ant colony I keep in the wall of my bathroom. Later, I saw little bits of ant poison headed in the same direction. I’m pretty sure that has to be poltergeists.
2. I’m watching a Ghost Adventures marathon. They’re so dreamy. And bad ass.
7. The end is near. I know everyone had their eyes glued on December 21, 2012, but an archeologist friend told me that date could be a few years in either direction. So, my friends, the end is near, and I’m going to spend it doing something I’ve avoided for years — eating chocolate.
5. A New World Order has taken over my home. The dogs have joined the Freemasons and started placing these weird symbols all over my house. That’s what happens when the animals outnumber the people, I guess.
3. I saw an orb. I took the flash photo after I dusted for the first time in a month, an activity I pursue by using a leaf blower.
8. I just traveled back in time. It was weird. I was sitting here listening to the radio when Ronnie Milsap’s “Lost in the 50’s Tonight” came on. One thing led to another, and, well ... I think you can see where I’m going with this.
6. I just saw a crop circle. It was in my backyard. Next to the Bigfoot poop.
1. I’m experiencing a protracted bout of sleep paralysis. Right now, I’m stuck in my bed unable to move with a scary old hag sitting on my chest. As soon as she gets off me, I’ll resume my top 10 lists.

Digital Audio Recorders By Jack Kenna, Rensselaer Paranormal Research and S.P.I.R.I.T.S. of New England
host hunting equipment, paranormal tools, ghost gear, scientific equipment for paranormal investigating ... no matter how you phrase it or what you call it, when it all comes down to it, there is no such thing as ghost hunting gear. It simply does not exist. None of the equipment or tools that we use for investigating the paranormal was ever truly designed for that purpose. There is no equipment on the market today that can detect a ghost, and neither is there ever likely to be anytime soon. Oh yes. I know what you’re saying. You think I’m wrong, and you may even think that you know of at least one piece of electronic equipment that was “designed specifically for ghost hunting.” While that statement may be true, and I will concede that point, none of the equipment you’re thinking of, such as the Mel-Meter, Spirit Box, K-II, E-Pods, REM-Pods, RT-EVP, Full Spectrum or IR Cameras, or any one of numerous other pieces of electronic equipment or cameras, can identify the presence of a ghost. What they can do, at least a few of them, is detect changes in the environment, identify sources of EMF, record sounds levels that we cannot hear with our human ears, and photograph visual spectrums we can’t physically see in. Others of course are just paper weights or dust collectors and not of any use at all for investigating the paranormal. What I intend and hope to do with this article is to try and educate you, the reader, on the different types of equipment on the market today that purport to be designed for paranormal investigating, what they are actually designed to do, and whether or not they are “worth their salt” at all for our field of work. The Digital Audio Recorder OK, on to our first item up for review, the digital audio recorder. This is actually the #1 pick of my three top picks for equipment that “every” paranormal investigator “must” have in their tool box. The audio recorder is the
The majority of tangible paranormal evidence you will collect will be Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP).
most important piece of equipment a paranormal investigator needs to have. Why is this? It’s because the majority of tangible paranormal evidence you will collect will be Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP). Given the importance of this piece of equipment, you want to make sure that the audio recorder you purchase is of very good quality. The more serious you are about investigating the paranormal, the more you have to be willing to spend for true quality equipment. Having said that, I understand that even those of us committed to paranormal research can’t always afford the highest quality equipment available on the market. But we can get very high-quality audio recorders that will only hurt our wallets a little, but not wipe out the bank account. Those of you who are new to the paranormal field, paranormal enthusiasts, or just want to go on an occasional ghost hunt, you can also purchase a decent-quality recorder at a reasonable price. So how do you know what
makes up a quality recorder from one that’s only good for a paperweight? The following is what you need to look for in a quality audio recorder regardless of your level of paranormal investigating. 1. Microphone When discussing microphones in regards to off-theshelf, handheld, digital audio recorders, this is a simple choice of mono or stereo (1 channel recording or 2 channel recording). Even as a beginner or enthusiast, I strongly recommend choosing a recorder with a stereo microphone, as it will help capture a much better quality recording and increase your chances of not only capturing EVPs, but also finding potential EVPs when reviewing your audio because of the better quality stereo sound you get during playback. 2. Recording Format, Mode, and Frequency Response Although it may seem like I’m putting three separate items as one thing to look for, when it comes to digital audio recorders they are actually all directly linked to each other. Also, most information provided by the manufacturers these days only points out the device’s recording formats (MP3, WMA, or WAV) and Modes (48, 128, 192, and sometimes even 320 kbps for MP3 Format); LP, SP, HQ, ST HQ, or ST XQ for WMA format; WAV
8000 Hz–16 Bit, 16000 Hz–16 Bit, 24000 Hz–16 Bit, 32000 Hz–16 Bit, 44100 Hz–16 Bit, or 48000 Hz–16 Bit. (Note: There are also 8 Bit recording modes for each of the Hz frequencies listed for the WAV format, but it is always best to record in the larger 16-Bit file size. The normal/default WAV format setting is 44100 Hz–16 Bit, which is a CD-quality recording and which I also recommend using for EVP work). Recording formats have a direct impact on the frequency response of the recording. Why is this so important? Because both of these directly impact the quality of the audio recording and the frequency range in which the recording is made. These two things directly impact your chances of capturing EVPs. Almost all digital audio recorders made today provide the two recording modes of MP3 (Moving Picture Audio Group or MPEG) and WMA (Windows Media Audio). Both of these formats are compression formats, which mean that when you are recording your audio it will be compressed by the format and mode you choose to record in. I’m not going to get into the details of what file compression does, except to say that when it comes to recording audio for capturing EVPs, file compression is NOT GOOD. Since almost all low-to-mid-price digital recorders today come with only the MP3 and WMA recording options, you really can’t get away from file compression, unless you are willing or able to spend more money on a
Paranormal Underground 11
higher end digital audio recorder that records in WAV (uncompressed) format. What you can do, though, to ensure you get the highest quality sound recording possible at a price that won’t empty your wallet is to look for a recorder that can record in WMA format, with a recording mode of at least ST HQ (Stereo High Quality) and/or MP3 format, with a recording mode of at least 192 kbps. Regardless of the recording format you prefer, by using the highest quality recording settings available you will greatly improve your chances of capturing EVPs and being able to hear them clearly when reviewing your audio. 3. Internal Memory Storage (Flash Memory) Because you want to be recording in a format and mode that generates large files, you want a digital recorder that has a large internal memory storage capacity, also called Flash Memory. Most manufacturers today advertise how many “hours” their recorders can record for, such as 131 hours, 536 hours, and 1,151 hours; but it’s very important to note that these advertised “hours” are estimated at the “lowest” quality recording settings (e.g.: MP3 format at 48 kbps or WMA format in LP mode).
Even still, a recorder that advertises to be able to record 800 hours of audio at these lowest recording settings will still be able to record up to eight or nine hours at higher settings of MP3 format at 192 kbps or WMA format in ST HQ mode. This is more than enough hours of recording time for a long night of investigating. If you want to transfer these advertised “hours” into “memory size,” that can be a bit difficult to do because of the large variation in recording “hours” from manufacturer to manufacturer and recorder to recorder. So to make it simple, if you want to look at memory size (capacity) I would just look for a recorder that has either 1GB or 2 GB of memory. Either of these is more than enough memory for a full six to eight hours of investigating. I personally have four recorders, and each has 1GB of memory. I set each of them up to record with one of our DVR cameras all night (six to seven hours) during the investigation in WMA format in ST HQ mode. And even after that many hours, I still have memory left on the recorder. I once let one of these record all night during an investigation, and it ran for over nine hours before running out of memory.
The nice thing about the new digital recorders is that you usually need to worry about running out of memory before you have to worry about changing out batteries. Most recorders today will claim to run for a full 50 to 70 hours before you need to change the batteries, but I typically find that they will run for at least 12 to 15 hours before the batteries die. It’s important to note that temperature has a big impact on battery life; the colder it is, the shorter life batteries have. This is most likely one reason why we paranormal investigators go through so many batteries, as we always seem to be investigating locations that are unheated, cold, and damp. The good news here is that all the digital recorders today seem to run on “AAA” batteries, so those won’t cost you an arm and leg either. The exception to this is the higher end digital recorders, such as the Zoom family of recorders (H2, H4, H4n, etc.), which use “AA” batteries, but can also be run on their AC adapter. 4. USB Port Since you will want to be able to download your files from your digital recorder to your computer in order to best review them using audio software, or even just to move them from your recorder to your computer to free up space for your next investigation (without having to delete files), it is extremely important to be sure you purchase a digital audio recorder that has either a USB port or a USB plug. This comes as a standard option on most digital recorders today, but there are still some out there that don’t, so you want to be sure to read the specifications on the package before buying to make sure the recorder has a USB connection. Sometimes what looks like a good buy on a digital recorder, let’s say one that comes with 2GB memory, stereo microphone, and high-quality recording modes for a price of $40, is priced that way because it does not have a USB port, so everything that you record on it stays on it unless you delete it. In my opinion, for today’s paranormal investigator, a digital audio recorder with no USB port makes a great paper weight. It’s useless to me if I can’t get the files off the recorder to review them in an audio software program, where I can pull out audio clips of what I believe to be potential EVPs so that I can listen to them in more depth later on — or boost the audio if necessary to better hear the EVP without modifying the original file.
This also allows me to put any EVPs that are found on a CD to give to the client at the reveal, or to just save those great EVPs in smaller files to be able to quickly pull up and play back for friends who are interested and want to hear them. In case I haven’t made my point yet, a USB port or plug is a “MUST HAVE” on your digital audio recorder. 5. Microphone Sensitivity All decent-quality digital audio recorders have a setting for the microphone sensitivity but not all do. The ones that don’t just means that it has only one setting that is built into the recorder and set by the manufacturer. Since there is no way of knowing for sure exactly what this setting is, you want to look for a recorder that has a microphone sensitivity setting option. With some recorders this can be an external switch on the side of the recorder that allows for a choice of up to three option modes, such as Lecture, Conference, or Dictation. Others have option modes on the internal electronic menu of High or Low. When recording for EVPs you want to use the microphone sensitivity mode that allows the microphone to pick up as much of the audio spectrum as possible. In a recorder with a High or Low setting, you want to set the microphone sensitivity to High. In a recorder with the options of Lecture, Conference, or Dictation, you want to set your recorder to Conference mode, as this is the highest sensitivity setting that the microphone has. High sensitivity means that no ambient noise or sounds are being filtered out by the microphone. Again, when trying to capture EVPs you don’t want to be filtering out any sound from your recordings. In my opinion, the above factors are the five most important things you want to look for when choosing a digital audio recorder, as well as how to use them and their impact on recording for EVPs. I know what you’re thinking next: “OK, while all this information is good, what brand should I buy? Who makes the best recorders for my money?” While I didn’t really want to get into brands and models (because they change so often), as much as what’s important to look for, I can give you my personal top ranking for quality digital audio recorders that won’t break the bank. Tune in next month for the details!
A USB port or plug is a “MUST HAVE” on your digital audio recorder.

The Godfather of the Paranormal: John Zaffis Behind the Scenes of the Haunted Collector By Jenny Gurney, Proximity Paranormal
ohn Zaffis is a paranormal researcher born and based in Connecticut, United States. He currently stars in the Syfy paranormal reality TV show “Haunted Collector” and runs the Paranormal and Demonology Research Society of New England, which he founded in 1998. Research has taken John all over the United States, as well as Canada, England, and Scotland. He lectures at colleges, universities, and libraries throughout the U.S. John currently runs the Museum of the Paranormal located in Stratford, Connecticut. He also starred in and wrote the documentary film Museum of the Paranormal, which was released in spring 2010 and produced by New Gravity Media. A documentary film on his work and personal life — called John Zaffis: The World Within and produced by CORE Films (which also produced the paranormal documentary series Scared!) — was released on September 3, 2010. To learn more about John and his research, read on! ***** Q: Can you tell us more about your experience in the paranormal field and of your personal history? John: After 38 years of being involved with the paranormal field, I’m a very fortunate young man. I call myself a paranormal brat because I had an opportunity to grow up and work with Ed Warren, and he was my mentor. Back then we didn’t have any of the equipment. All we had were cameras and tape recorders, and we would abide by a lot of the old methods, like putting baby powder down just to see if any energy or anything would move across it and make any markings whatsoever. Today, I believe very strongly in taking the old world and the new world and actually combining them together.
John Zaffis has more than 38 years of experience studying and investigating the paranormal. He currently runs the Paranormal and Demonology Research Society of New England.
I still have my original camcorder. Every once in a while I still use that and just set it up to monitor in a room. So there are many old methods that I apply that are very critical. Then if we can document something with what we refer to today as our scientific community in the paranormal realm — getting an EVP or getting something on video — that really substantiates things to me.
Paranormal Underground 15
The Syfy TV series Haunted Collector premiered in June 2011. The show features John, his son, his daughter, and three other team members who search for ghosts at reportedly haunted locations. Oftentimes, the team finds an item at the location that appears to hold paranormal properties.
When I was 16 years old, I had an experience. It was the middle of the week, a Wednesday evening, and at the foot of the bed we had a six-foot figure that actually appeared. It was transparent, and it was shaking its head back and forth. I had gone downstairs and was explaining to my mom what I experienced, and my mom really wasn’t one to talk about the paranormal. She was petrified of it. I started thinking about it at that point and started digging into things and started researching. We didn’t have the Internet then, so the only thing I was able to do was actually get books and start meeting people. I was exposed to a lot of different things, and that’s what really got me into it. Then I started digging in even deeper. And the more I read and saw, I realized that people have had paranormal experiences for thousands and thousands of years; all of that intrigued me even more.
normal in the course of your travels?
Q: What was it like working with your aunt and uncle, Ed and Lorraine Warren?
Q: You’re working very hard to gather evidence scientifically. How do you respond to skeptics who say you haven’t proven anything yet?
John: I didn’t look at it like I do today; it was an advantage that I didn’t see back then. I’m very thankful for that time and the knowledge I learned from both of them. I learned so much from both of them. I consider myself very lucky. Q: Your research has taken you around the world. What insights have you gathered about the para-
John: People view the paranormal differently in other countries. They accept the paranormal and talk openly about it. Many religions are open to the paranormal. In fact, when Haunted Collector began airing in other countries, I received many e-mails from people about how they viewed the paranormal. Q: During your investigations, you have encountered ghosts, poltergeists, and the demonic and diabolical. How does this type of work affect you psychologically? John: I have to separate things. When I walk out of my barn, I shut everything down. You have to be able to shut everything down because it can affect your life. I do not think about the paranormal 24/7, unlike what people may think.
John: Well, I can’t disagree with that. We’re gathering a tremendous amount of information out there with electronic voice phenomena, our video systems, and hot and cold spots. We’re gaining all this information. We’re storing it. All of us are working out there doing it, but could we actually get repeatability? No. That’s what we’re
striving for as far as a scientific method per se. Today I know a lot of engineers, scientists, and different people that are intrigued with our field. After speaking with them about how they’re developing some of this equipment, I’m hoping somewhere down the road we’re going to be able to get repeatability. We are working from a spiritual realm, and it’s very hard to get spirits to actually repeat something that they did. If we’re able to achieve that somewhere down the road, that’s going to be colossal in the paranormal field. So when somebody tells me that, that’s okay and I can understand that. But we’re striving for it. We’re working diligently at it from many different angles today. Q: When you go into homes where people have unexplainable problems, how do you determine which item at the location is the cause? John: We do an extensive search with the equipment, and a lot of times there’s multiple items, each with a different story. In the initial investigations in speaking to the clients, we’re trying to determine if they brought in a genuine antique, if they found something at a garage sale, or if they brought back something from their travels, vacationing, and etc. Usually at that point in time I can narrow it down. If the activity started somewhere within that time frame of the owner bringing an item or collectible into the property, it’s an interesting process. The best way I normally describe it is like putting a jigsaw puzzle together, trying to determine exactly what the source is and what item it may be. Once we have determined what the item is and if it is in fact “haunted,” we then take the items to keep them safe. I’ve had the museum for several years now, but it’s a private museum and it’s based on my property where my home is. So it is not something that is open to the public.
the items to either hopefully break that energy or contain it to that individual item Q: Whose work in the paranormal field do you respect the most and why? John: So many to choose from … People who have been part of the field the longest --- I love to talk to those people that have done it that long. Ed Warren, Lorraine Warren, and Hans Holzer are probably the individuals who were most prominent as I was learning and growing up in the field. Many of these people looked at things from different perspectives and shared their information, bringing it to the forefront in our field. I always tell people to gravitate toward us old people (because I’m one of them now) that have a lot of knowledge. There are several people out there who I have a tremendous amount of respect for. They were the pioneers in our field, and they carried those scars of going through those times where people would continuously ridicule them and try to debunk everything they were trying to understand and share with people out there. It’s a difficult field, but I have several mentors out there who I have a tremendous amount of respect for and always will.
“I admire Ed Warren, Lorraine Warren, and Hans Holzer.”
Q: Can you talk about the precautions you take to ensure the powers of the items are contained while on display in your museum? John: Yes, there are many different types of things that I do. I’m a paranormal investigator, and I have to be very analytical. When dealing with a spiritual realm, there are different precautions that I do take. I use sea salt, holy water, and there are a lot of different rituals and different prayers, depending on what that item might be associated with. So there are many precautions that I actually do over
Q: Tell us about Haunted Collector. John: I wanted to do something different that wasn’t a demonology show. I thought haunted items were intriguing … I never thought it would be so conversational as it is now. Many things get cut out of the show, like my debate about removing an item or not. Season Two isn’t as much about the haunted item but more about the haunting. Q: How is it working with all the team members? John: It’s like working with family … it is very special to me to come together as a team to find out about these hauntings. Everyone is treated equally. If one person gets in trouble, everyone gets in trouble. Q: What would our readers be surprised to find out about you? John: I love to cook. When I’m stressed or worked up about something, I cook up a storm. I find it relaxing.

A Course in Psychic Awareness By Jackie Chin, http://psychicconnextions.blogspot.com/
efore you waste any time wondering if you have any psychic abilities, or whether you can actually develop them, let me clear up the issue by saying that you do have psychic abilities and you can easily develop them. Everyone has psychic abilities! The question is: How can you develop them? Would you believe that you can radically increase your psychic abilities by practicing for five to 10 minutes a day? All you need is pen and paper. Don’t think about your psychic abilities as something “special” or “difficult to learn. Learning to use your psychic abilities is no more difficult than learning to bake a cake — you’re just using different ingredients! Defining Psychic Abilities and How to Exercise Those Abilities Before we dive into instructions about how to increase your abilities, let’s define what we mean by psychic abilities. When you are using psychic awareness, you are extending beyond what is already in your psychic realm. Things that are beyond your five senses — that of taste, touch, smell, hearing, and sight. If you are able to access information from your spiritual center, you can accomplish many extraordinary things. With these abilities you can glean information that you could not possibly know about people, places, and things. With practice you can even go to places and see things without even leaving your home, or office. Here’s a simple exercise that will help you develop your psychic abilities. With this exercise your goal is to practice using your spirit abilities to access information that you can’t access with your five senses. Here’s how you do it: 1. Bring pen, paper and a watch or timer to a very public location that has lots of people. Fast food restau-

rants, airports, or malls are good places to start. 2. Seat yourself in a comfortable location where you can easily write, observe people, and see your timer or clock. 3. Pick a person to observe (you will need to observe him or her for 30 seconds). Set your timer for 30 seconds and start writing. 4. Write anything and everything that comes up about that person, whether you can directly observe it or not. It’s easier to start by writing what you can observe about the person (such as hair color, clothing, activities, and so forth). Don’t think about what you are writing, and don’t allow yourself to pause. Don’t worry about whether you’re observations are correct or not. Write as much as you can and as fast as you can. 5. Case Files Of The Unknown: Haunted Sites
By Rick E Hale, Foundations Psychical Research
am not a big fan of ghost tours for many different reasons. As a long-time researcher and investigator of ghosts and hauntings, I’ve always felt that touring a haunted location does not get down to the specifics of a haunted location. Another reason are the tour guides. I’m fairly certain that telling the same ghost stories night after night can become somewhat tedious and, unfortunately, this can lead to the guide being detached from their audience, almost to the point of boredom. And, lastly, there will always be members of the tour group that take the subject matter less then serious, oftentimes heckling the guides and just being nuisances. However, when the opportunity arose for me to go the world famous Stanley Hotel while on vacation with my family in Colorado, I decided to plunk my hard-earned dollar down and take the night ghost tour. I was pleasantly surprised when all my reasons for disliking ghost tours did not materialize. The Beauty of The Stanley Hotel As a guy who is used to bunking in Travelodges and Super 8 motels, the first thing that struck me about the Stanley Hotel was not its stories of ghosts and hauntings, but rather how beautiful and elegant the 140-room, Georgian-Style building was to behold. When Freelan O Stanley, the inventor of the Stanley Steemer automobile, opened the doors of the hotel to accept guests in 1909, he wanted people to understand that this was his little piece of Heaven in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. And, indeed, the hotel and property were a sight to behold. After walking around the property and taking many pictures, I looked at the clock on my phone and saw that the seven o’clock hour was quickly approaching and the tour would soon begin. I made my way to the lower level

The Tour Begins in the Ballrooms At 7 p.m. our guides, Hannah Prow and Kelsey Monty, ushered the group into a small viewing area where they introduced themselves and played a quick five-minute snippet of a documentary film concerning the history and the hauntings that make the Stanley Hotel so well known. After the short film, Kelsey and Hannah led us into a ballroom and took the time to find out about the members of the group and their own personal experiences with paranormal phenomenon. I spoke up, as well as several

clearly see a man manifesting behind the boy. The group was encouraged to take pictures of the small nook where the apparition of the man appeared. To my knowledge no one caught the image of a man or anything paranormal for that matter. All that would soon change in a small room in the Stanley’s basement. A room simply called “Lucy’s Room.” As an investigator of psychic phenomena, nothing impresses me more than watching a spirit manipulate a physical object, and that is exactly what we got on our tour. After we entered the room, Hannah began to tell the stories of Lucy and Paul, two of the spirits said to inhabit the basement. Paul was a groundskeeper that died of a massive heart attack while shoveling snow. But no one really knows the true story behind the spirit of Lucy, only that she inhabits the location. As our guides mentioned Paul’s name, the door that we all came through just minutes before inexplicably closed. After this event, the room fell silent. Did everyone just see what they just saw? The investigator in me compelled me to jump up and check the door for any signs of trickery. And try as I might, I found nothing. No string attached to the door. No spring-loaded trigger under the carpet. No human being ran by and closed the door. Hannah and Kelsey explained that this was a common occurrence in the room. But the best was yet to come.
a bowl on the table. Our guides explained that the spirits of Lucy and Paul were not the only spirits inhabiting the basement. Katey also made her presence very well known. And she loved candy. Kelsey removed a lollipop from the bowl, placed it in her hand, and began to address this spirit child. We all watched in amazement as the lollipop began to ever so slightly rock back and forth in Kelsey’s hand. Again no trickery involved here. Some unseen force was playing with the lollipop. One of the members of the group was so amazed by what she was witnessing, she asked if she could hold the sucker. As Kelsey asked this spirit to knock the candy from the hand of this woman, the woman reported the eerie sensation of somebody touching her hand. As with Kelsey, sure enough the lollipop moved ever so slightly in my fellow tourist’s hand. And then just as it begun, sadly, the tour came to an end. Kelsey Monty and Hannah Prow had another tour to lead. In conclusion, I would highly recommend this tour. The tour was not only fun, but educational as well. And clearly the guides did not get their education from merely watching any number of the paranormal reality television shows. The past comes very much to life on The Stanley Hotel’s tours. I give the Stanley Hotel a five-star rating, and I am convinced that this grand old hotel in the Rocky Mountains is very much haunted. Vrykolaka (AKA Vrykolakas):
A Greek Vampire By Jill Stefko, Ph.D., Suite 101 Contributing Writer
reek vampires? When most people hear the word “vampire,” they think about Bram Stoker’s Count Dracula and Transylvania. People view vampires as the blood-drinking living dead. Eastern Europe is the motherland of most of the vampire lore; however, other countries, including Greece, have their legends about the living dead. The Vrykolaka The name of the Greek version of the Slavic/European vampire has its roots in the Slavic term vblk’b dlaka, meaning wolf pelt wearer. Most vampire legends involve drinking people’s blood. The vrykolaka doesn’t bite the neck of its victims to drink blood. Instead, it creates plagues of infections by walking around towns. The vrykolaka has been blamed for poltergeist activity, but the poltergeist is a totally different creature — it’s an entity agent ghost or human agent RSPK, recurrent spontaneous parakinesis. Some people thought the vrykolaka caused sleep paralysis, similar to Old Hag Syndrome. This idea is based on the notion of the incubus and the Balkan vampire’s proclivity for killing victims by sitting on their chests. Sleep Paralysis usually occurs when a person is supine, falling asleep, or waking up and isn’t able to budge or speak. It normally lasts for a few seconds or several minutes. Victims sense a malicious presence, which often involves feelings of horror and trepidation. Some individuals feel a heavy pressure on their chest. How People Became a Vrykolaka The creature knocked on people’s doors and disappeared if a person answered on the first rap. The person was condemned to death soon and became a vrykolaka. Space Alien Message, WOW!: Genuine or a Fluke? By Jill Stefko, Ph.D., Suite 101 Contributing Writer
here’s a color copy scan of the original computer printout of the Wow! signal, taken several years after its arrival, by the Ohio State University Radio Observatory and the North American AstroPhysical Observatory, NAAPO. It has numbers and letters and “Wow!,” written by volunteer astronomer Jerry Ehman, in cursive handwriting. The National Geographic Channel and the Puerto Rican Arecibo Observatory are working together to try to contact the message’s writers. WOW! Message Discovered Jerry Ehman was a volunteer researcher for Ohio State University’s Big Ear radio observatory, which was closed and dismantled in 1997. He inspected data from the telescope’s scan of the sky for August 15. Then, information was run through an IBM 1130 mainframe computer, printed on perforated paper, and examined by hand. Ehman noticed something amazing — 140 characters and a vertical column with the alphanumerical sequence “6EQUJ5” that happened at 10:16 p.m., EST. He circled it and wrote “Wow!” in the margin, using a red pen. His exhilaration over the piece of esoteric information was from Big Ear’s mission, searching space for radio signals that might be originated by aliens trying to contact intelligent life somewhere in the universe. Ehman saw that this signal came from the direction of the constellation Sagittarius and looked like it could be an alien message. Observatory director John Krauss and his assistant Bob Dixon, who examined the data, were also astonished by it. What Was WOW!? More than 30 years later, the Wow Signal, as SETI institute researchers dubbed it, is the first and best potential evidence of communication from aliens and one of
science’s most baffling mysteries. The institute’s mission is to “explore, understand, and explain the origin, nature, and prevalence of life in the universe.” Ehman and his colleagues worked to rule out other explanations, including satellites, aircraft, or Earth’s groundbased transmitters; however, researchers haven’t been able to prove that it’s a message from space. Ehman told the Columbus Dispatch in 2010, “It’s an open question.”
Theories About Alien Communication Cornell physicists Philip Morrison and Guiseppe Cocconi tried to figure out how a distant alien civilization, if one existed, could try to contact others in the universe, in the early 1960s. They theorized that aliens would use a radio signal because the transmissions require moderately little energy to generate and can travel vast distances across space. They presumed that aliens would be intelligent enough to choose a message that other intelligent beings might understand, even if they had a different language. Chemicals emit distinctive electromagnetic frequencies, which is how astronomers determine the structure of distant planets and stars from their light. Hydrogen, the most common element in the universe, emits a signal with a frequency of 1420 megahertz, so they thought that aliens could send out a signal that mimicked it. Were they right? Today, we still don’t know.
WOW! Difficult to Explain The signal Ehman saw was the first one that appeared to almost precisely fit the description. Every digit on the printout represented the strength of a radio signal, from zero to 35, with intensities over nine represented by letters. Most of the signals were ones and twos. One, as signified by the letter “U” in the middle of the message, was extremely powerful, about 30 times greater than the usual noise of deep space. It was the loudest, longest signal that Big Ear would pick up. The signal was narrowly focused and very close to 1420 megahertz, the frequency of hydrogen. The message was complex to explain. Scientists were bewildered when they traced the signal to a location northwest of the globular cluster M55, a place where there apparently was neither star nor planet. In 1997, SETI researcher Paul Shuch told New Scientist magazine that, if the signal came from aliens, it would have required some remarkably advanced equipment. Supposing that the extraterrestrial beacon was the size of the largest radio telescopes on Earth, the aliens would have needed a 2.2 gigawatt transmitter, infinitely more powerful than any existing terrestrial radio station. The most perplexing thing about the Wow! Signal was that it lasted about 72 seconds and never was detected again, although, in the 20 ensuing years, scientists conducted over 100 studies of the same area of sky. They wondered if aliens were trying to contact humans, wouldn’t they keep repeating their message? In the early 2000s, researchers tried to detect a message, using a 26-meter radio telescope in Hobart, Tasmania, that was smaller than Big Ear, but more technologically advanced. In 2003, Astrobiology Magazine reported that, despite its ability to detect signals only five percent as strong as the Wow! Signal, they found nothing that resembled it.
An inexplicable radio transmission was received in Ohio State University’s observatory.

AN IRREPLACEABLE LOSS The Life and Death of a Poltergeist Agent: Part 1
By Dr. Barry Taff
rue love comes in many forms and occasionally requires us to embark on a very strange, fascinating and unexpected journey through a landscape seldom experienced by others, whose final destination is beyond our comprehension. My friend and colleague, Barry Conrad, took just such an unimaginable trek. Over the past 37 years as a parapsychologist, having lived through cases like The Entity, Hollymont, and San Pedro (“An Unknown Encounter”), which made up an infinitesimal fraction of my files, I was left with way too many sleepless nights, falsely believing that I’d seen, heard, and felt it all. Jaded into complacency, I was sure that nothing could ever really move me again. To put it simply, I was wrong, dead wrong. There was no inkling that I was on the verge of perhaps the most incredible case of my career, one that would affect virtually every single person I shared my work with. A Great Loss Early Tuesday morning, July 25, 2006, the world lost a very unique and uncommon woman — an articulate woman, possessing incredible intelligence, emotional grounding, as well as beauty. However, to film-maker Barry Conrad, the loss of his soul-mate, Lisa McIntosh, to cancer, goes well beyond just another human being who has left the land of the living in which the rest of us still reside. Lisa and Barry met in, what for most, is the least likely to produce a productive and enduring relationship … the Internet. They shared many aspects of life: similar ethnicities, very similar family structures, and perhaps what was most important for them, a never-ending interest in the paranormal. Although the North Carolina native Lisa McIntosh was only 42 years old when she died, she had dedicated most of her short life to the study of paranormal phenom-

ena. Lisa’s interests covered a broad spectrum of phenomena, everything from remote viewing to ufology. Interestingly, what allowed her to personally investigate, rather than just study many of these aspects even more directly, was her meeting and falling in love with my associate — writer, producer, director, cameraman, and paranormal investigator Barry Conrad, a two-time, Emmy awardwinning director of photography, best known for his shows
An Unknown Encounter and California’s Most Haunted, which garnered the highest ratings in the history of the SciFi Channel for a three-hour time block. In fact, Lisa made her producing and acting debut in Conrad’s California’s Most Haunted and then again in Monsters of the UFO. What was not initially known by Barry or myself was that Lisa was far more than just another pretty face whose interests were somewhat askew from the mainstream. In fact, shortly after meeting Lisa in spring 2001, she spoke of moving from one haunted house to another as she grew up. As the very notion of such is literally an astronomical probability, it strongly suggested that Lisa herself was possibly a poltergeist agent.
in summer 2001, there had been more than 57 separate days of poltergeist events (individual events themselves came to 146, which averages out to 12.5 individual events per day over the course of five years), ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous. So pronounced and dramatic were these incidents that if I myself had not been present to experience many of these extraordinary episodes, I would be hard-pressed to believe them. That’s how spectacular some of these outbreaks were. It Began One October It all began on October 13, 2001, the day after Lisa, Conrad, and myself went out to Calabasas to investigate an alleged haunting. However, before we delve into the specific details of the psychokinetic maelstrom that surrounded Lisa McIntosh, several other background essentials must be described so a proper perspective is possible. Barry Conrad moved into his current home in the Glendale/La Crescenta area during January 1997. While Conrad had experienced poltergeist outbreaks in his previous home in Studio City, California, back in 1989-90, they only occurred after Jackie Hernandez, the poltergeist agent associated with the San Pedro case, “An Unknown Encounter,” had visited his apartment. Other than these specific incidents related to this particular case, Conrad’s life had been totally free of such occurrences. Until Lisa moved in, that is.
These photos depicted curious luminous anomalies surrounding Lisa, which were bright pink or orange in color.
A Poltergeist Agent A poltergeist agent is defined as an individual, anywhere from pre-pubescence or adolescence into adulthood, who is plagued with varying degrees of psychokinetic (PK) (mind-overmatter) outbreaks. At the dawn of psychical research in the latter part of the 19th Century, it was believed that these phenomena were the result of noisy, prank-playing spirits attached or attracted to an individual, which is what the German word “poltergeist” means. However, evidence collected by parapsychologists over the last 126 years strongly suggests that these incredible displays of psychokinesis have very little to do with discarnate intelligence (dead people’s spirits), but everything to do with unusual neuro-chemical brain functions. In point of fact, since Lisa moved into Barry’s house

Case Files Of The Unknown: Haunted History Long before the PK volleys began, Conrad shared some fascinating photographs he had taken of Lisa with me. These photos depicted curious luminous anomalies surrounding Lisa, which were bright pink or orange in color. While I thought these images were interesting at the time, I didn’t really give the matter any further thought; that is, until other phenomena began displaying themselves around Lisa. This case is perhaps one of the most perplexing in my files (which now exceed 4,300 cases) in that there was such a high volume of incidents, many of which had multiple witnesses, including myself. Yet, once Lisa became very ill while on location with Barry in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, shooting a segment on the Mothman, for Monsters of the UFO, and was later diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma in late December 2004, the frequency and magnitude of these psychokinetic events markedly diminished. For the purpose of this article, we’ll assume that the poltergeist outbreaks around Lisa formally began on October 13, 2001, although according to Lisa’s own words, her childhood through early adulthood was littered with classic psychokinetic displays. Barry Conrad asked Lisa to live with him in early summer 2001. During that summer, their existence in Conrad’s Glendale home was normal, with not even a glimmer of anything paranormal. Looking back, I believe that this was the calm before the storm. After Barry and I went out to investigate our first case in which Lisa accompanied us on October 12, 2001, their lives were forever changed as a result. There was nothing particularly noteworthy about this investigation other than marginally higher geomagnetic and low frequency magnetometer readings. The Calabasas, California, residents reported the sounds of furniture being moved when it was not. The lid of their washer was torn off by an unseen force and thrown some distance. Various objects in and around the house had been thrown and broken, doors opened, food moved around, gravel in the backyard thrown into sliding glass windows, toys on the lawn moved, knocking on doors, and file cabinets opened on their own. And let’s not forget the old standard of keys appearing and disappearing (apports). However, most of these events happened long ago, or over the span of many years, and only when the family’s
younger relatives were present did anything like the aforementioned events occur again. The very next morning, October 13, 2001, Lisa was upstairs in the bathroom when her hair dryer suddenly turned itself on. Lisa was curious but not concerned, as she assumed that this incident was nothing more than a malfunctioning appliance. Several days later on October 15 while she was working at the computer, it kept shutting itself down for no apparent reason. Again, Lisa didn’t give it a second thought, as PC’s (as opposed to Macs) are known to act quirky now and again. The next event was much more difficult to dismiss as some minor electronic glitch. It was October 17 at around 7:30 p.m. when both Lisa and Barry collectively observed a blinding blue-white flash of light in the foyer of the house from no apparent source. Needless to say, this event caused quite a bit of concern on both Lisa and Barry’s part. However, there was still insufficient evidence to suggest that they were possibly dealing with poltergeist activity. A Poltergeist Outbreak Several days later came the first defining event suggesting that Barry and Lisa were, in fact, dealing with a poltergeist outbreak. Around 1 a.m. both Barry and Lisa are upstairs asleep when they were awakened by the explosive sounds of what came across as heavy furniture crashing to the floor downstairs in the living room. Barry ran downstairs expecting to find his expensive entertainment center destroyed. He found absolutely nothing within the house that could logically explain this classic type of poltergeist chicanery. He went back upstairs and told Lisa he found nothing. As they were about to fall back into slumber, the extremely loud crashing sounds once again emanated from the first floor. Barry again ran downstairs, not knowing what to expect. There was nothing to be found. Returning to bed, he and Lisa spent a very restless night waiting for further activity, which did not occur.

Demonology — The Dark Files
How Do Demons Find Their Way Into Our Lives? By Bishop Jerry Williams, Eastside Paranormal Society & Demonologist
any have asked me how demons make their way into someone’s life. I will say this: Most of us accidentally come across them. Most people look at demons as a religious aspect, but let’s look at how they get into our lives. First, the paranormal field has been greatly influencing many people. So let’s say a person goes to a location they know is infested with demons and they start investigating or actually seek the demons for investigating purposes. This is what we call knowingly accepting the fact that you know they are there. This is your free will being used by your choice to poke around at that demon. God gave all of us free will, and he made us in his image and likeness. However, there was a war that broke out in Heaven, as there were some angels who didn’t like the fact God gave man free will and made man in his image. To some angels, this was an insult and humans should never be above angels. Lucifer was one of God’s most beautiful and loyal angels. When the war broke out, Lucifer wanted more and lead the rebellion with the Fallen From Grace angels. The war, by the way, was not a physical one, but more telepathically and more like a debate. It is unknown how long the war lasted, but the fallen angels were cast to Earth to remain here until the coming of Jesus Christ. So how do they get into our lives? Some invite demons into their lives. Once in, they will try to manipulate and destroy our lives through oppression and possession. Sometimes demons will act like a loved one who recently died to trick you into accepting them. If you accidentally come across them, as long as you leave or stop what you are doing you will be better off. There must be rules set by God, because demons would have destroyed every man woman and child on Earth. We also have found that individuals who lived at

your location or property long before you, may have invited a demon into their location and now the demon lives there. They may stay dormant for years or decades in one area. When they are ready to awake, they will. Invitations inviting a demon in can be made by Ouija boards, séances, EVP work, and other communication attempts. So be careful, and if you think there’s a demon in a location, stop and call in a demonologist or minister that is equipped to handle it. o ghosts and ghouls catch your attention? Are you curious about what lies on the other side? In this article, I’m going to go over some of the basics of paranormal investigating and what tools and equipment are used to make spiritual connections. There are a few different tools you will need to help assist you in your paranormal venture. First and foremost, a video camera should be used to record your entire experience. The general rule of thumb is that you can’t have too many video cameras. Every camera will catch a different view. Since you are going in pretty much blind, a video camera will be your eyes. You can then review the video as many times as necessary to make sure you have seen every second of what was recorded. Due to the fact that most paranormal investigating is done at night, an infrared attachment for your camera is another nice addition to your arsenal of ghost hunting tools. Video is extremely important in any investigation, but the audio is equally important. A digital voice recorder with a USB port to upload the audio files to your computer for more convenient reviewing is perfect to have. Versions with cassettes can also be used in place of a digital one if preferred. The process of recording sounds that are not heard by the naked ear with a voice recorder is called Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP). The next tool that is just as important in paranormal investigating is a digital camera. A camera is used to take random pictures throughout the investigation or in a direction where a sound came from. There is more evidence caught in a picture than the naked eye can typically see. The camera helps freeze the frame and assist in catching anything that may be there. The last tool that is a necessity in assisting in your investigation is an EMF meter. EMF stands for Electromagnetic

Field. This tool is said to pick up the energy that entities put off. This is a great tool to help in disproving findings as well. By using an EMF meter, you are able to determine whether it’s really an entity from the other side or just wiring running through the walls. An EMF meter can be purchased at most hardware stores at a decent price. In conclusion, I hope this helps you with the basics of paranormal investigating equipment. By adding these tools to your kit, you can greatly increase your potential success when investigating.

Inside the Psychic Mind
Where the Psychic Meets Mental Illness By William Becker, Paranormal Insights
had an interesting experience the other day that is something all of us in the paranormal field might benefit by being aware of. Someone contacted me regarding their psychic and other paranormal experiences of late. This person’s description of the experiences kept expanding and became somewhat incoherent as they went rambling in a variety of directions. Then the person said that they were on medication for some mental health issues. Some of the issues sounded like they could possibly be confused with the “psychic” experiences that were claimed. As most people who investigate the paranormal will tell you, there is a very real need to determine if any physical and mental health issues, as well as any medication or other substance use, might be part of the perceived paranormal phenomena. This is also true with those of us working with people and their psychic abilities. For many of us, the desire to help is strong, and we can easily get caught up in the “I want to help” mode and quickly get in over our heads. And, to be perfectly honest, our egos can also kick in with the ideas of “I can do this” and “I know how to fix it all.” We Are Not Mental Health Professionals We might attempt to determine just what part of the person’s experience is mental illness and what is true psychic ability. We can easily delude ourselves into thinking that we really can tell. Well, in most of our cases, that’s simply not true. Not only are we not mental health professionals, but we can easily start misinterpreting what we think we are picking up from the person psychically as we attempt to read what they are seeing. The situation can become even more complicated when the person asking for confirmation of their psychic abilities starts, saying things such as maybe the mental illness isn’t real and the diagnosis is based on people not

understanding that their experiences are actually psychic in nature. This person who contacted me not only voiced that possibility, but also the idea that stopping their medication might increase their abilities and doing so would put them in a more “normal” state. I struggled with this for a bit. I’ve personally had friends with similar mental health issues, and I have done professional work wearing a very different hat with mental health advocacy organizations. I know that there could be some truth to what this person was saying — to some degree at least. I also have read theories from people channeling entities from other realms claiming that mental illness is often simply a case of someone visiting another realm and getting stuck there. The difficulty is, these are theories. And they are made by people without the deeper understanding of the medical aspects of mental illness. When we work with

Inside the Psychic Mind
The Challenge of being a Psychic and a mom By Deborah Lantz, www.facebook.com/yourspiritbeacon
eople often tell me things such as, “Oh, it must be so wonderful to be a psychic” or “I wish I could see what you see.” Well, let me just say this. It is a gift that I have which I gladly use to assist other people who seek out my services, but it is no picnic. Like many moms who work outside of their home, it is a constant struggle between work and family time. Only my juggling act might consist of trying to make it to my daughter’s school for her musical after I drop off our dog at the vet, while at the same time I am trying to ignore a spirit who decided he still wanted to chat with me long after I had completed my reading for his loved one. Yes, this is a day in the life of a psychic medium that is also a mom. As a psychic medium, I can communicate with the dead, as well as look at one’s past, present, and what is coming up in the future. For me, it is all about reading people’s energy. Sounds pretty cool, right? Well, it certainly does have its advantages, but it is not all that it is cracked up to be. What I mean is this. Imagine taking your 14-year-old daughter to the mall on a crowded Saturday afternoon. As you are walking around the mall with literally hundreds of other people, you are immediately hit with their energies. The lady with the red purse is mad at her husband because he refused to go with her to help her pick out the towels for their new apartment. The teenage thugs who are smirking at every female that walks by and you already know what is on their minds. The senior citizen who is sitting by himself looking sad and who is missing his late wife, while you see the spirit of the man’s wife gently laying her hands on her husband’s shoulder. Multiply these few experiences by several dozen, with each of these experiences hitting you roughly within seconds of each other. It is not easy to take in. There are ways to protect oneself from the onslaught of energies, but it is not fail proof. For me, it is as if I have a dimmer switch on in my brain. When I am being called to use my services for readings, for example, I turn my switch on full power. When I am on mom duty, I turn it down low,

which means even if I do not want to tune into energies around me, a few of them still manage to get through. It is very draining on me to be in crowds for this reason. As a mom of two kids who are actively involved in afterschool activities, it can be a challenge. Sitting in an audience at a musical or jammed packed in the stands for a Friday night football game can be a bit daunting at times. At night, while most people are drifting off into slumber, spirits are approaching me. They are usually harmless, benign spirits who want me to pass a message along, but sometimes I get stuck with a real jerk for a spirit who will not take no for an answer. Often these spirits will whisper in my ear as I am trying to get some sleep, or they will try to get my attention by nudging me. I cannot always tell if it is a spirit who just spoke to me or if it is a living being. My poor husband has gotten used to it over the years, but I have asked him so many times, “What did you just say?” My husband just rolls his eyes and tells me he did not say anything, knowing that once again his wife has another unseen visitor. A running joke in our family is, “Mom is just hearing voices in her head again.” Please do not get me wrong. I am grateful for the gifts I have been given, and two of my greatest gifts are my kids. But being a psychic medium and a mom has its own set of challenges.

The Legendary Roosevelt Hotel By Rick E. Hale, Foundations Psychical Research
hat are some of the reasons that a person’s spirit might stick around? Unfinished business, untimely death, a need to stick around and watch over one’s family and friends? All are considered a viable reason, and I agree with them 100%. But what about attachments? In the Buddhist belief system, it is believed that having a strong enough attachment to something can determine your next incarnation, or maybe cause a person’s soul to stick around after death. And what could be a stronger attachment than fame? Being famous is a driving force in the lives of many and could be the cause of remaining in the physical world when your body expires. If what is said about the hauntings at Hollywood’s legendary Roosevelt Hotel are true, they could be proof of this theory. Founded in 1927, the Roosevelt Hotel was bound for greatness. The very first Academy Awards ceremony was held in its Grand Ballroom. Tickets to the event cost $5. The memories of this great hotel do not stop there. Hollywood’s first popular cherubic child actor, Shirley Temple, received her first tap dance lesson at the Roosevelt. It is said that during the rough years when it was a federal crime to get a drink, Errol Flynn, the swashbuckling leading man, ran an illegal gin distillery out of a back room in the hotel’s barber shop. And Marilyn Monroe, one of the sexiest women to have ever graced the Silver Screen, shot her first ad for suntan lotion by the side of the pool. It would seem the Roosevelt Hotel was destined to make not only everlasting memories, but everlasting hauntings as well. In the 1940s, handsome leading man Montgomery Clift stayed in room 928 while filming, From Here To Eternity. In order to properly play the part, Clift had to learn to play the clarinet. Clift, who was well known for really tackling a part in a film, walked up and down the halls of the ninth floor diligently learning the instrument. To this day, people who stay on the ninth floor have claimed to hear the sound of a clarinet being played in the hallways. Some have even claimed to have seen Clift’s spirit with clarinet to his lips walking around in the wee hours of the morning.
The Roosevelt Hotel is said to be home to the spirits of some of the Silver Screen’s most famous actresses and actors, including Marilyn Monroe and Montgomery Clift.
His usual room at the hotel, suite 928, is said to be very active. Strange loud noises have been heard coming from the room at all hours of the day. When staff go to investigate, the room is empty and curiously the phone is off the hook. Marilyn Monroe, one of the Silver Screen’s most beautiful women, was a frequent guest at the Roosevelt Hotel and insisted on staying in suite 1200. This particu-

lar room had a full-length mirror in it that Marilyn would gaze into, making sure she looked perfect before heading out on a shoot or a night on the town. It would appear that this mirror may have not only captured Marilyn’s beauty, but it may have captured her soul as well. Shortly after her tragic and some might say suspicious death, guests who stayed in suite 1200 began reporting something strange and frightening about the full-length mirror in the room. Apparently, when gazing into the mirror, the guest would discover the image of Marilyn Monroe gazing back. Due to the high number of guests reporting the haunted mirror, it has been removed from the room and placed beside the elevator on the lower level, presumably to end the rumors of the leading lady being seen in the mirror. Although, every once in a while when entering the elevator to go up to their rooms, guests still report seeing a fleeting glimpse of the blond bombshell. By all accounts, the hauntings of Hollywood’s Roosevelt Hotel appear to be nothing more than psychic imprints, energy trapped in a location that replays itself when the time is right. I, for one, wouldn’t mind staying there for a night. The clarinet plays a nice melody. And, guys let’s face it, getting a glimpse of Marilyn Monroe is not a bad thing.

hile watching my two granddaughters, I once again realized and remembered the healing power of a washcloth. I don’t know about you, but I naturally use a wet washcloth for many things, like when people are sick or injured and when small kids are around. My grandmother used washcloths for everything. She had cleaning rags, body washing rags, and medicine rags. Now, mind you, the rags had a ranking system, and she knew where they belonged in those three categories. The newest and nicest rags were for body washing. When they got a bit used and pilly or started falling apart, she would put them in the medicine rags pile or move them down to a cleaning rag. She would not keep cleaning rags long, because they would have served their purpose. Out of all the rags I remember the medicine ones the most. Those healing rags performed magic all on their own. If you have never used a powerful washcloth like that, it is a must try. On a headache, a muscle pain, or even cooling down a fever, it works like a charm. Ahhh, instant relief … I have taken these healing rags a step farther. I use them either hot or cold with stones and herbs placed inside. I have sewn washcloths together and used them as the skin of my medicine bags. Depending on what your ailment is, I conjure up a recipe. Some rags are wet and then frozen separately or together with wax paper between them. If you place wax paper inside the pocket, it makes the medicine bag not freeze shut. My herb and stone recipe goes into a muslin bag like the ones you use for tea. Or you can find organza bags for really cheap, especially if you don’t want to reuse the bags a lot. Some people have different ideas about aseptic techniques. If you’re looking for an indirect way to treat your

Magic & Lore: When The Mystical And Paranormal Blur
Awaken to the Wonderment of Weather Lore By Silvermoon Medicyn, www.silvermoonmedicyn.com
eather has always amazed and baffled us since the beginning of time. We have always wanted to control it, because it influences our survival and production of food. Without the sun and the rain, we would not have trees or food; we would become extinct. But even with all the amazing technology, we still cannot predict the weather. We are able to track and attempt to predict the weather, but we have not yet mastered it. As in older times, many today still use signs given by Mother Nature to predict what is to come. Shamans and weather witches have used these signs for centuries to assist their communities in understanding the weather. By using the signs, they helped people move to safety and plan great endeavors. We cannot control the weather; we must learn to live in accord with it. Weather dancing is one of the most powerful tools a shaman/weather witch has. Dancing does not control the weather; we use it to ask Mother Nature to send us signs and the proper weather needed for survival. So we can dance in harmony with her great power. I loved learning about the wonderment of this great planet and her gentle ways of communicating with those awake enough to hear her song. When I was young my grandmother would ask what color the woolly bear caterpillars were in the late autumn. In the Midwest, the woolly bear caterpillars are believed to predict the winter that is coming. The woolly bear has an orange band of fur between the black bands. Katie’s Conspiracy Corner
New Mexico UFO Sightings By Katie Christopher, NEPA Paranormal’s Ghost Detectives
The purpose of this article is to educate readers on the facts behind some of the most popular and controversial paranormal conspiracy theories in existence. There are many things out there being hidden and covered up. But we have a right to know the truth. Each month I will cover a different conspiracy theory — some well known and some a bit more obscure, but all that have compelling evidence supporting the fact that the truth is being hidden by either our own government or a private source. You will be given the details behind each angle of the topic at hand, and in the end, it is for you to decide what you believe. Any questions, concerns, or suggestions are welcome and can be e-mailed to me at KatiesConspiracyCorner@yahoo.com.
hen I initially chose my topic for this month, I intended to cover the UFO sightings at Roswell. I had a contact who was involved in some UFO research near Roswell, and I knew he had some interesting stories that would add so much more to the story I wanted to put out there. After doing my interview though, I came up with so much more than an article on Roswell. I think in order to do this interview justice, I am going to step a bit outside of a restricted area and focus on a larger picture. It seems that Roswell, while most known for UFO sightings, is not the only area in New Mexico privy to these strange occurrences. Some sightings occurred more than 100 miles from Roswell, but all have a common bond that one might not notice unless paying close attention, or knowing insider information that most don’t. I will explore these events as told by my source throughout this article. Lastly, I am excited because my contact on this matter has decided he does not need to remain anonymous. And on that note, let’s begin!
I first met Bruce Pearson at The Red Mill in New Jersey. Over the years I ran into Bruce at different locations, each time learning more about his inside knowledge of UFO cover-ups. (Image source: Syfy.com)
The Red Mill About two years ago, I was at a location in Clinton, New Jersey, called The Red Mill. I was there for the weekend doing a paranormal investigation with my team. The property was absolutely breathtaking, and the small town full of charm. While I was there I met Bruce Pearson. At the time he was part of the organization that handled the mill, and since he has a background in the paranormal, he was, for all intents and purposes, our host for the weekend. Bruce was a kind, interesting, and knowledgeable man who had so many stories. Most of his personal stories he told us centered on UFO research. At that time, he also eluded that the government might not be thrilled

with some of his findings. Over the years, I ran into Bruce several times at different events and conventions within our field, and this past March after I started this article, we ran into each other in Gettysburg and I asked for an interview. Bruce was all too happy to agree. During my interview, I was absolutely terrified by some of the things he told me. I can remember getting cold chills as I heard accounts of what has happened to him over the years, simply because he had information that some do not want him to have. I’d like to start by going over some of Bruce’s credentials, which are more than impressive. Bruce graduated from high school in three years. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism in 2½ years and then obtained an associated degree in broadcast engineering. He also spent a few months working with the government department of state, worked with the ROTC, became an EMT, and even got his pilot license, as well as many other impressive feats. Things began to change for Bruce shortly after he began working at a news station in Roswell, New Mex-
ico, in the 1970s. In his years living in New Mexico, Bruce had some experiences that were truly amazing concerning personal UFO sightings. After finding such compelling evidence of potential UFOs, Bruce put together an extensive report detailing his experiences complete with pictures. Eyewitness Accounts of UFO Activity I asked Bruce to sum up his experiences for the purpose of this article, and this is the information he gave me: “The items I viewed were remarkable for a number of reasons. As a pilot, the most notable aspect of these craft was their ability to accelerate from a dead stop, hover in mid-air, and then incredibly accelerate across the horizon in a matter of seconds, only to stop and resume a hover in the second spot. “They also had independent flight characteristics followed by synchronous maneuvers, and then they would come together to circle, as in a ‘circling the wagons’ type of look. These types of acceleration and maneuvers are not possible due to the physics we understand today. As

Katie’s Conspiracy Corner to their description, it is hard to definitively describe the way they looked due to the movement and the distances; however, I was able to get a few good glimpses through the telephoto lens on the 35mm camera I used to take the pictures on the second evening. What I saw was a semipolished gun-metal/pewter color object that appeared to be metallic in nature. They were smooth and typical UFO saucer shaped in overall form, and as a guess was probably nearly a hundred feet across. “I was struck by what appeared to be a rather sharp edge to the craft, which seemed as if it were sharp enough to cut you should you slide your hand along it. This could be completely inaccurate and must be noted as such due to the nature of the distances, etc., of the sightings, but this aspect was one that stands out in my memory of the incident. The craft exhibited a range of colors throughout the incident that may be a direct result of the thermal distortion that takes place viewing a distant object through air, which varies in temperature and density and can affect the refraction of the light causing an apparent color-shift to the viewer. “I can say, however, that although they were viewed on clear nights, there were certainly object-originated lights on the craft and not just reflections from the moonlight. The colors appeared to range from yellow through red, with bright white dominating the illumination.” Early Morning Calls Become Threatening Word of his report began to spread, and Bruce was contacted by Brian Vike, asking if he would come on a radio show with him and Jeff Rense and describe some of his accounts. Bruce was happy to do so, eager to share his findings with anyone who would listen. The radio show was a success, but the aftermath would soon prove to produce chilling consequences. Two nights after the show, Bruce received an anonymous phone call at 3 am. There was a man on the other line who would not identify himself, but stated he wanted to discuss the recent radio show Bruce had done regarding UFO sightings.
Bruce became very defensive, questioning why this person would be calling at such a late hour. He had a wife and young son sleeping. The man on the other end of the phone persisted and warned Bruce that it was in his best interest to stop talking about his findings. He then proceeded to give Bruce a short but accurate account of personal details on himself, his wife, and his son, even mentioning the karate school his son went to at the time. Bruce, not one to be intimidated, pressed back on the man, almost blatantly asking what would happen if he didn’t keep quiet. The man calmly said, “Bullets are cheap, and people have accidents all the time.” The call was soon disconnected, but the message was clear. Whoever this person was, they were very powerful and connected. And they were going to a lot trouble to make sure this story was kept quiet. Bruce was enraged at the thought of himself and his family being threatened, and he became determined to find out who the person was. He reached out to a contact who he thought might be able to trace the call and detailed what had happened. His friend said to give him some time, and he would see what he could come up with. About an hour later, he called Bruce back and very shakily advised he could no longer work on tracing the number. He said as soon as he started looking into it, he received a call that both his job and his pension would be in jeopardy if he looked any further. He apologized again and asked to be left out of it. Bruce now had a situation on his hands. He was all but certain that this type of threat could be coming from someone within the U.S. government. It didn’t make sense that anyone else could have that type of power. So now the question was, did he just drop it and forget any of it ever happened? Or did he fight back? He knew deep down that if they were going to these types of lengths to keep him quiet, then he must really be onto something, and somehow he couldn’t let that go. There was the question of his own safety though. He wasn’t well known, and if they wanted to really make him disappear, they could. He needed to find a way to contin-

Katie’s Conspiracy Corner with their accounts all around the area. The sightings seemed to focus around New Mexico. After hearing so many stories so widespread over New Mexico, I asked Bruce why he thought it was such an area of interest, and if these are otherworldly beings, what would the draw to the area be? His response was chilling: Nuclear weapons.
ue spreading his message, but protect himself and, more importantly, his family while doing it. A Risky Move Bruce’s next move was a risky one, but it proved to be the smartest choice he could have made. He called up his friend Brian at the radio station he had just done the interview for, and explained all that had happened. The next night, he was on the air again, this time detailing the events that had transpired since his first interview. He spoke to the thousands of listeners about the threats and the phone call in vivid detail. In his mind, he felt the safest way to continue his work with UFOs was to let as many people as he could know that his life was potentially in danger because of it. Bruce never received another phone call, but he was not immediately left alone. A few weeks later, he bumped into a neighbor on the street. His neighbor stopped him to chat for a minute. When he approached Bruce, he said he had been meaning to talk to him about what was going on in his home. He even asked Bruce if he was running an illegal drug operation out of the house. Bruce laughed and quickly denied anything of that nature, but asked why he would bring it up? His neighbor told him that every day after he and his wife left for work and his son was in school, and unmarked car parked in the driveway and watched the house for a few hours, then left. Bruce brushed it off, but he knew that he was still being followed. It was at this time that UFO sightings began to get more and more popular. People were coming forward
A Nuclear Connection? One characteristic of these sightings that one might not put together, unless they have a keen eye for it, is that they are all near or virtually over existing military bases. New Mexico is littered with military bases, and interestingly enough, the majority of the bases these crafts have been seen over house powerful nuclear weapons. Bruce has an interesting theory that maybe they are interested in the technology of our nuclear weapons, so they are making an attempt to get close to them. One can only speculate what the use of such weapons would be to these life forms, but it is definitely an interesting theory that I had not thought of before, and it certainly makes a lot of sense if you think about it. With UFO stories now being so popular, eventually Bruce became less of a person of interest, and soon he was confident that his brush with the government was over. Years went by, and the paranormal and UFOs were now something many parties investigated. Reports were released by the dozens, and in that time, Bruce never deterred from his research. He is one of the most educated and experienced UFO investigators I have ever come across in my years in this field. After this interview, I am also confident in saying he is one of the bravest investigators I’ve ever encountered. As a ghost hunter, people always tell me I am brave for being able to face the unknown. I never really thought about it that way, because I’ve never felt there was a need to fear the dead, but the living, especially those in power, can be scary. It takes a special kind of person to stand up to that for what they believe in, and Bruce is that person. My Opinion on UFO Sightings in New Mexico After hearing all of the facts on this topic, I will admit I’m a little apprehensive about the topics I choose. Do

Tales From the Haunted Heathman Hotel By Rob St.Helen, West Coast Ghost Hunters
ello again from the Haunted Heathman! Where to start? For some unknown reason, the paranormal activity at the hotel has been extremely high for the past few weeks. We had a guest who was staying on the tenth floor come down at 1:30 a.m., packed up and ready to leave. When I asked her what was wrong, she gave me the strangest look and said, “I don’t want to sound like I am a goofball or out of my mind, but there are some very strange sounds coming from my room.” When I asked her where in the room the sounds were coming from, she said from behind the bed, which would be the other room’s bathroom. However, the only problem with that was that no one was in the other room that night. My coworker that night decided he wanted to go up to the room for a bit to see what he could hear. I told him to “go for it.” However, he only spent a few minutes in that room, standing between the bed and wall, before he had to get out due to a very intense and sudden headache that came on. Later that night, he went back up to the room. The air was still very heavy, but this time he could not fit between the bed and wall, as the covers had been moved, more to the wall side. That was enough to “get his heart really pumping,” he said. The woman who had the experience on the tenth floor decided to stay after I told her I could get her into a completely different floor and room. She was OK with that. On that same night, I had something follow me for a few minutes. I was standing on some stairs, and BAM, my left arm immediately felt frozen, and chills went up and down my arm. Without telling my coworker what happened, I walked over to him. A few seconds later he said, “I just got chills all over me.”
Paranormal activity has been extremely high of late.
I walked away, and he said, “They are gone now.” So, of course, I walked back to him. Immediately, his eyes got really big, and he said, “Dude, you have someone following you right now. I am frozen again, just as you walked over to me.” On Friday night (my Monday), my coworkers told me that the past few days the activity continued to ramp up. That last night, there were knockings on the walls after my coworker asked for the spirits to knock. He also heard the sound of the upstairs restroom’s handle being worked. So he went up to check it out, and no one was there. Also, on many of the floors, the eighth floor has been the big winner of late, the shadow man has been making himself known to us as we do our paper walk around at 4 a.m. in the morning. We at the Heathman are kind of puzzled as to why all the activity is happening at this time. It normally ramps up in November. Maybe this is a sign of more activity in the future for us.

Personal Experiences: Reader Encounters
The Trickster By Steve Nakonechny
n July 2012, I had a personal experience that convinced me to refrain from conducting my own personal paranormal investigations. I live in a small town in Florida where I own a small kennel. Most late evenings, I get to spend some quiet time doing research for my book regarding the phenomenology of the soul. One such evening, I was taking a break from the computer and heard a loud metallic thunk from the adjacent bathroom. I peered into the small room and saw the mirrored door to the medicine cabinet swinging back and forth. It abruptly stopped its motion mid-swing and remained ajar! This was extremely unusual as I knew the hinges to the cabinet were very rusty, and the door itself was difficult to move. I tried to replicate the noise by opening the mirrored door wide open and slamming it shut, and, as I suspected, the door refused to swing freely. This unusual activity put my mind on very high alert. Anticipating capturing a paranormal presence, I grabbed my digital camera in order to validate my personal experience. I sat in the kitchen chair with the lights off, my camera and trustworthy canine Bucky, an Alaskan malamute, by my side. He accompanies me on most investigations, where his keen senses serve as a tool to detecting spirit presences. Roughly five minutes into my research, the atmosphere in the room drastically changed. The feeling of you’re-notalone was heavy and pervasive, and it was all I could do to not flee from the room. I breathed deeply to slow my racing heartbeat. At that moment, I knew there was someone or something right behind me. A rush of adrenalin filled my body, and I glanced at Bucky. His gaze was straight through me, as if seeing something directly behind me. A static charge of electricity brought the hair on my neck and arms up, confirming we were not alone. I reached for my camera and then felt a prolonged physical touch on my right ear. I swung the camera up and pointed the aperture over my right shoulder and fired off a burst of shots. The electrostatic charge in the room immediately subsided. I quickly turned on the room lights and browsed through the images that were taken just seconds ago. What I saw in the photographs forever changed my
feelings about conducting paranormal investigations … because staring back at me was a large goat-like head of a beast with flaring nostrils, a shock of hair draped over its nose and a straggly white goatee hanging from its chin! My blood ran cold with fear. Could this be an interdimensional entity from a recent investigation that had followed me to my home? I immediately e-mailed a psychic medium friend and posed that question to him. He felt strongly that it was a “trickster,” an entity related to my recent investigation of our familial home in Connecticut. He advised me not to talk to it or pay any attention to it, including taking photographs! Doing so would greatly increase its power. These days, it’s commonplace to watch on television paranormal investigations being performed by professionals in their field. Many people think it looks like fun and that they’d like to try it themselves. Looking back now at my personal experiences, I can absolutely see the risks and dangers involved when conducting paranormal investigations. Any attempt to communicate to spirits should be left to experienced professionals.

Religion And The Paranormal
Paganism and the Paranormal By Melinda Stum, M.Div., South Sound Paranormal Research
aganism is difficult to universally, or even comprehensively, define. It encompasses a vast diversity of ancient and modern faith traditions that differ in systematic convictions and practices. The infamous, ancient Pagan traditions are those of the Greek, Roman, Norse/Viking, and Celtic cultures. Neo-Pagan traditions are the modern reconstruction (or continuation) of ancient Pagan faith traditions recorded throughout human history and cultures. The prominent reconstructed neo-Pagan traditions are: • Asatru, the traditional Germanic religion of the Norse and Vikings. • Druidism, the traditional Celtic religion. The prominent continuation of ancient Pagan faith traditions are: • Goddess worship, a general term for the worship of a female divine figure. • Wicca, a general term for nature-worship and witchcraft. Unfortunately, this vast diversity in Paganism hinders the ability to comprehensively address its relationship with the paranormal. Although this diversity recognizes the human spirit, the Celtic tradition particularly embraces the disembodied spirit. Therefore, the article will be limited to the Celtic tradition and the paranormal. Celtic Paganism (Druidism) Druidism is the traditional faith of the Celts, who were the people of modern Ireland, the United Kingdom (e.g., Northern Ireland, Scotland, and England), and Northern France. Druids were Celtic priests. The Druid convictions were intertwined with the paranormal, which further influenced their practices.
Celtic Halloween Halloween is consumed with paranormal charm and often traced to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (sowin). Although the festival of Samhain was celebrated on November 1, the Celts held that the prior evening (October 31) blurred the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead. This blurring of the boundary enabled the disembodied spirits to return to the world of the living. These disembodied spirits were believed to cause trouble, damage crops, and ease the process of divination for the Druids. The Celtic Halloween convictions were embodied through a variety of practices. 1. The Celts would adorn themselves with the heads and skins of animals. This was to disguise themselves from malevolent (or trickster) disembodied spirits.

Some use wooden “fews” or other objects as a divination system drawn from ancient Celtic tree lore and the Ogham “tree alphabet.”
2. The Celts would prepare for visitation from deceased ancestors. These preparations included the hospitality of food and beverages. Additionally, the Celts would illuminate a path from their homes to the grave(s), in order to guide the disembodied spirits travel between the worlds on this night. 3. The Celts would ironically leave food and beverage on their doorstep. These preparations were to discourage undesired disembodied spirits from entering into the home. 4. The Druids would embrace the eased divination. These prophecies, or predictions, would guide the Celts through the cold, dark winter.
disembodied (human) spirits. The disembodied spirit of the deceased was transported at death to the Otherworld by Bile (a Celtic God). Their life would continue similar to how it had prior to their death; however, the person would die in the Otherworld and be reincarnated into the world of the living as a plant, animal, or human. Interestingly, the Celts would mourn the soul’s death in the Otherworld at each birth. The process of birthdeath-rebirth would continually elevate the soul into a higher level. The highest level, or realm, is the “Source.” The Source created all things, including the Gods, Goddess, and the immortal soul.
The process of birth-deathrebirth continually elevated the soul into a higher level.
Celtic Divination Divination is the process of obtaining information via paranormal (supernatural) means, which often foretells the future or unveils the unknown. These divinations may be referred to as prophecies, premonitions, or predictions. Although Halloween blurred the boundaries and enhanced the ability of divination, the Druids did not limit their practice to the annual celebration. The Druids would practice multiple techniques to induce divination. These practices included meditation, the interpretation of dreams, the interpretation of sticks thrown to the ground, and interpretation of the flight pattern of birds. Celtic Otherworld The Celtic Otherworld is the intriguing, mystical land of the spirits, including fairies, leprechauns, giants, and
Conclusion The vast diversity of Pagan systematic convictions and practices hinders the ability to comprehensively address its relationship with the paranormal. Yet, the Celtic Pagan tradition (e.g., Druidism) particularly embraced the paranormal, especially the disembodied (human) spirit. The Celts held the existence of the world of the living and the Otherworld. The Celts held that on Halloween evening the boundaries between these worlds were blurred, which enabled the travel of the spirits and the insight of divination. In conclusion, the Pagan traditions (especially Druidism) embrace the paranormal with open minds and hearts.

“The World’s Weirdest Places” & “The Real Men in Black” By Michelle M. Pillow, www.MichellePillow.com
uthor, journalist, and paranormal expert Nick Redfern’s work focuses on a variety of subjects, including UFOs, Bigfoot, Roswell, Area 51, Cryptozoology, Loch Ness Monster, Werewolves, Sea Serpents, and Penthouse magazine features … well, that last one is true, but maybe not so paranormal. Nick recently spoke to Paranormal Underground magazine about his research and writings. ***** Q: In your book, The World’s Weirdest Places, you list your top 25 paranormal-themed locales from all over the world. What inspired you to write about this? Nick: Over the years, I’ve come to learn that there are certain places on the planet that seem to attract far more paranormal activity than others, such as where you might have a small, old English village where people have seen UFOs, werewolves, ghostly manifestations, and much more, all in the same place. Sometimes it’s not just the phenomena that are weird; it’s the location too. So, that’s the theme of the book: It looks at 25 places around the world that seem to be saturated in paranormal phenomena. The book addresses the theories as to why this might be the case, such as worm-holes, portals, and what have become termed window-areas. These are places on the planet that might act as gateways to other dimensions, which may explain why certain places seem to be hotspots. Q: Do you believe in the supernatural? Or are you a skeptic?
In late summer 2004, Nick Redfern traveled to Puerto Rico for two weeks with a film team from the Sci-Fi Channel’s series, Proof Positive, to make a documentary about the Chupacabras.
Nick: I do accept that the world of the supernatural is real, yes. However, I try not to get tied up with belief systems. For example, I fully conclude that something very strange happened at Roswell, New Mexico, in July 1947. I am firmly of the opinion that people see Bigfoot and lake monsters. And I do accept that alien abductions are real. But, as you’ll note from my words, I haven’t used that term “believe.” There is a reason for that: For example, I know Bigfoot exists. But I don’t know what it is, because we don’t have the hard, physical evidence. Therefore, to say “I believe Bigfoot is a giant ape,” would be reckless of me, until we have proof that Bigfoot is a giant ape, or is something supernatural-based instead. So, I know the supernatural is real, but I don’t get caught up in belief systems of wanting it to be this or that, without hard evidence. Q: Which location is your number one must see? Nick: I would say Loch Ness, Scotland. Everyone has heard of the Loch Ness Monster. But, there’s so much other weirdness there too. The famous and legendary occultist Aleister Crowley had a home on the shores of the Loch, called Boleskine House, and tried to conjure up demons from within the loch. There have been UFO encounter sightings at Loch Ness and even a Man in Black case from the early 1970s. There have been reports of encounters with large black cats — “panther”-like animals — in the woods around the loch, and a tale of a ghostly airman from the Second World War having been seen near the water’s edge. So, Loch Ness is definitely my number one! Q: Have you been to all of the locations listed in the book? Nick: No. Of the 25 places, I’ve been to about 15 or 16. However, of the remaining 9 or 10, I ensured that I only

photos or those of colleagues who have carefully studied the relevant people and places firsthand too. Q: Why do you think readers, and society in general, are fascinated by the paranormal? Nick: I think the idea that there might be much more to the world than what we see around us captures imaginations. The idea that there could be hairy, giant creatures roaming the woods, long-necked monsters in our lakes, and UFOs soaring overhead excites and intrigues people, for one very good reason: Everyone likes a mystery of one sort of another! But, I don’t think people imagine things because they want to believe. The paranormal is absolutely genuine, and I think people who have had paranormal experiences want to know what happened to them, so they become fascinated by the phenomena and the search for answers.

Author Spotlight Nick: The Real Men in Black is a full-length study of the phenomena of the MIB who threaten into silence those people who have seen UFOs, had alien encounters, and even people who research and investigate the phenomenon. The book begins with the late 1940s, when the modern era of the MIB began — although there are some earlier reports — and goes right up to the present day. The MIB are still out there! Q: What prompted you to write the book? Nick: Many people assume that the MIB are simply Hollywood creations, the characters “J” and “K” played by Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones in the movies. The films are good fun, but many people don’t realize they got their inspiration from real-life reports of people being silenced by dark-suited MIB after undergoing a significant UFO encounter. So, I decided to write the book to demonstrate that the MIB phenomenon is very real, not just a Hollywood creation. Q: The Men in Black first appeared in the early 1950s to a UFO investigator named Albert Bender. Can you tell us about his encounters with the MIB?
In The Real Men in Black, author Nick Redfern delves deep into the world of these mysterious operatives. He reveals their origins and discusses classic cases, previously unknown reports, secret government files, and the many theories that have been presented to explain the mystery.
Q: Have you ever had a paranormal experience? Nick: I have had a lot of what are termed synchronicities. These are basically what you could call “meaningful coincidences.” That’s to say, meeting someone at the right place at the right time. Or a book falling on the floor and the pages opening at the very ones you’re looking for. Or, finding information on a subject in the most obscure way, but when it’s information you’re actually searching for at that very moment. I never ignore synchronicities, as I believe there is some guiding force behind them. We should follow where they take us. Q: What is your book The Real Men in Black about?
Nick: Albert Bender was the man whose experiences really brought the MIB to the attention of people in the 1950s. He lived in Connecticut and established a research group called the International Flying Saucer Bureau. Not long after it was created, Bender began to get threats from three shadowy MIB. It disturbed Bender to an extreme amount, and he quickly shut the group down and left the UFO subject. He briefly resurfaced in the early 1960s to write a book on his experiences, Flying Saucers and the Three Men, and then vanished again. The MIB clearly scared Bender right out of the subject. Q: Some people have suggested the MIB are government agents. Does evidence exist to support this theory? Nick: Well, I do believe that a few MIB encounters can be traced back to government agencies, particularly so from the 1950s, when the typical governmental “uniform” was a dark suit and tie and a Fedora-style hat. But, many of the MIB reports seem to fall into paranormal categories rather than something to do with the Pentagon or the CIA. Q: Another scenario suggests the Men in Black are aliens themselves. What do you think about that?
Nick: Whether we term them aliens, paranormal entities, or supernatural creatures, my own opinion — based on years of research — is that the MIB are not, for the most part, government agents. That is the imagery portrayed in the movies. The real MIB are very creepy, ghoulish even. They are very pale-faced, skinny, emotionless, not very tall, and seem to give off this atmosphere of dread and a sense of deep hatred of us. Some researchers suggest they might be responsible for some of our vampire legends, as they often surface at night and have a corpse-like appearance. Q: Have you ever been abducted by aliens?
Q: What does the future hold for your work? Nick: I’ll just keep on doing what I do! I’m not qualified to do anything else! As long as I feel I can offer something new and refreshing — in terms of data, news, and theories — to people interested in the supernatural, I’ll keep doing it. Plus, you have to have a passion and enthusiasm for it, which I do. So, as long as I want to do it, I’ll keep writing, whether it’s alien conspiracies or monsters in the woods.
“The MIB may not actually be living beings, as we understand the term.”
Nick: LOL, no! But, seriously, I would like to have an alien encounter in the hope that it might provide some answers as to what “they” are and what they want. Q: What is your personal opinion on who the Men in Black are? Nick: My own theory is that they are something supernatural. I think they may be the inhabitants of a co-existing
realm — a dimension beyond ours, in other words. I also think that they seem to be like a sophisticated “computer program” that is used to silence witnesses to UFO activity. The MIB may not actually be living beings, as we understand the term. In that sense, they may not be unlike the MIB in the Matrix movies.

Spirit Dumps & Solid Waste Landfills:
The Analogy & Environmental Impact By Jill Marie Morris, www.jillmariemorris.com
hey’re all over the place — landfills, dumps, and garbage recycling centers. Huge swaths of land dedicated to what we humans decide to purge: food, diapers, paper products, furniture, yard waste, and practically any other solid waste imaginable (yes, even a body, or two). Collected, often separated, and hauled away, destined to become a rotting heap of sludge and noxious gas. With that said, it should be no far stretch to consider the same may apply with spirit and other energies that are born into the Universe. What exactly is a spirit dump or celestial cesspool? Think of them as pocketed areas that become infested with the most disgusting of energies, be it due to acts of irresponsible dabbling, séances, use of Ouija boards, provoking, existence of active vortices, portals, or actions of ill-will. Sometimes a spirit dump may be a naturally occurring area, existing for as long as the Earth is old. A spirit dump is also a place for negative entities, energies, and elementals to gather, increase in strength, and wreak havoc. It is a build-up of the celestial plane’s most undesirable, and often deadliest, of forces. Spirit dumps and celestial cesspools are the black holes of the universe that suck the life out of the living, and have a true disdain for anything good. Whether controlled by demonic forces, a combination of souls at unrest, wayward elementals, and/or other dark devils, these energies can claim ownership of its territory, turning the most picturesque homes and quaintest towns into Hell on Earth for anyone found trying to survive in its sinister grasp. Perhaps caused by the same fate they bestow, spirit dumps are hotspots for paranormal activity and other phenomena that has often driven the most rational and logic
thinkers to insanity. Clustered together like a tightly knit ball, spirit dumps or infestations need just as much care as would a solid waste landfill. The problem is ... identifying and handling them. Identifying and Handling Spirit Dumps or Infestations In the case of an actual solid waste landfill, ventilation and monitoring devices need to be placed to keep a watchful eye on the gases and other byproducts that build up and fester in these areas. A network of underground, man-made and organic liners are necessary to control the waste, as to protect the environment from dangerous, even deadly, disease, chemicals, and contaminants that can filter not only through groundwater, but through rainwater, and become dispersed in the air we breathe. The same applies to a spirit dump. If left to run amok and seek destruction among the living, a once small area, such as a house, can act like a magnet and attract other
dark energies, and eventually muster enough energy to turn an entire town upside down. The negative energy hangs at the site, impacting anything in its deadly domain. Before making an analogy to a spirit dump, it’s best to have a basic understanding of how an everyday landfill works. The anatomy of a solid waste dumpsite typically consists of (in no particular order): • Bottom Liner • Old & New Cells • Leachate Collection System • Storm Water Drainage • Methane Collection System • Covers & Caps • Ground Water Monitoring Stations The Bottom Liner is a manmade barrier that is laid down into the foundation of the dump to prevent any of the deposited waste from coming into contact with any underlying ground, and groundwater. Old & New Cells are designated areas in a dump that receive the solid waste. After the physical breakdown of the solid waste, liquids form at the bottom of dumpsites. This system consists of a series of pipes and layers of sand and gravel. The liquid sewage, or leachate, is collected via the sump-like action and carted to a holding tank. The sewage is then taken to either a private or public wastewater facility for treatment. This process is known as the Leachate Collection System. Storm Water Drainage Systems control the runoff during heavy rain and storms, and other naturally occurring events. Since the trash is converted from a solid to a gas via the bacteria onsite, methane gas levels need be monitored and appropriately vented in order to prevent explosions.
Spirit dumps and celestial cesspools are the black holes of the Universe. The methane collections system is critical, for safety’s sake. This is known as the Methane Collection System. Covers & Caps are the layers of earth, or soil, that is compacted over the waste to protect the area from exposure. Ground Water Monitoring Stations are manmade stations that test and analyze the water in multiple locations of the dump. This is an important step to make sure that the water does not contain harmful contami-
nants that may filter into groundwater and, ultimately, the air via rainwater. These issues have long been prevalent in today’s society with human waste, and with the world census continuing to climb, is a problem that will impact future generations. In uncontrolled situations involving solid waste, e.g., opening dumping, the danger is exacerbated, be it by roadside littering, composting-gone-awry, or the development of non-dedicated sites. The same applies to spirit dumps. What Does This Have to Do With Spirits and Negative Energies? Energy waste can be generated by living human beings, deceased human beings, negative energies, entities, and other seedy spooks and specters. Spirit waste can impact the environment in similar ways as solid waste. There is, however, an interesting situation that takes places with the handling of the physical body after death that actually parallels what transpires in a landfill situation. For starters, the human body is typically buried or cremated after death. In turn, that leads to the body, or its ashes, being interred at a cemetery, mausoleum, crypt,

or, in some cases, relocated to a planned location, much in the same as solid waste goes to the dump or recycling center. Isn’t that a pleasant analogy? Now that the physical body has been taken care of, it is time to address what may happen with spirit or energy. Religion and faith come into play, but to forego any discussion on burial etiquette for perhaps hundreds, if not thousands, of different belief systems, it’s best to lend generalization and get down to the basics. Many years ago, I began to question the makeup of spirit dumps: What causes a collection of ill-willed spirits, demons, and other sordid energies? Why do they seem to be attracted to specific locations, and regions? What could be left behind, intentionally or unintentionally, after life ends? With each death being unique, inclusive of a final resting place, the human body ultimately decomposes. Even then, human beings still leave behind the tiniest trace of life. Relative to the questions as listed above, it was almost a no-brainer to start with DNA. DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) holds the genetic coding (blueprinting) of all living organisms. DNA has fast become the gatekeeper and puzzle-solver for many aspects of genetic mapping and identification, from genealogy, medical conditions, and diseases to being used as a valuable tool to help solve crimes. After some lengthy conversations and research into this possibility, I considered the possibility of Spiritual
DNA and believe that just as our “physical and genetic” DNA has always existed, Spiritual DNA exists as well. Just as with unseen elements, gasses, and so forth, even though you may not always “see it” does not mean it doesn’t exist. After all, if many on this planet were not concerned about spirit, perhaps religion would not hold such societal regard and esteem — worldwide? Spiritual DNA is left behind at the time of death, creating specific positive and negative energy elements in the environment, which can eventually lead to manifestations such as “ghosts,” or other paranormal phenomena. Taking it a step further, Spiritual DNA will lightly, or heavily, imprint the environment at the time of death. Those who pass with a Light Spiritual DNA imprint tend to be more apt to cross quickly — even instantly — whereas someone who passes with a Heavy Spiritual DNA imprint may become “stuck” in the environment. Noteworthy: Light Spiritual DNA imprints may linger, simply because they are attached to a home, property, or even person, but are harmless and are not negative energies. Spiritual DNA that becomes heavily imprinted on an environment typically stems from a tragic death, suicide, accidental death, or may be the result of someone who was not ready to pass, regardless. It does not mean that they cannot eventually cross over, but it does take longer to raise the energy of a heavy imprint. At times, there is even a need to facilitate or guide the energy by conducting a cleansing and/or blessing, or even a cast-out in cases of nasty buggers. Spirit dumps are indeed a collection of these heavy imprints, as well as other unsavory celestial and elemental energies that commingle and prey on the living. Undoubtedly, infestations and spirit dumps have a negative and profound impact on the living, which provide a food-source for continued survival of the damned. A Real-World Analysis of the Metaphoric Spirit Dump Returning to the anatomy of solid waste landfill, there lies an interesting analogy as to what comes into play with a spirit dump and its relevant, environmental impact. Reexamining the components will further explain this.
Perhaps a bit frank, but nonetheless it is an intriguing comparison. The Bottom Liner: The bottom liner of the metaphoric spirit dump consists of containers to hold the body, such as a casket, urn, crypt, etc. These items prevent the physical body from directly decomposing into the ground and causing a host of unpleasant issues. Old & New Cells: This is an interesting dynamic for a spirit dump. Old and new cells are the equivalent to burial plots, crypts, and location of a body at the time of death. This is the facet that has a direct impact on the environment and frequently is the cause of a spirit, entity, or energy imprint. Be it natural causes or otherwise, the location of a person’s last breath of life has the potential to become a focal point for future paranormal activity — especially in cases of murder and suicide. Recurring deaths in a specific area, given years, if not centuries, can be a prime indicator that the environment is tainted and perhaps infested. Examples of this would also include the sites of massacres, battlefields, and other mass-fatalities. These areas are also the equivalent of “opening dumping” in the spirit world. Leachate Collection System: The analogy of this component is particularly interesting. This is a threshold by which a spirit may, or may not, crossover, given the circumstances surrounding the death. In certain cases,
the environment does not completely “break down” or process spirit, resulting in a residual imprint. In other cases, again, depending upon circumstances and manner of death, it may result in spirit being “stuck” in Limbo. It can also lead to full-blown intelligent imprints and a host of other manifestations. For those that can part from the physical life and cross, then the job of the Leachate Collection System is complete, therefore, holding little negative impact on the environment. Storm Water Drainage System: This aspect of the spirit dump has to do with damage control. Simply put, this is pest control for negative energies. As storm water drainage systems provide in the literal landfill, paranormal investigators, demonologists, priests, clergy, energy workers, and psychic-mediums are called in for assessments and facilitation of “care plans” for locations experiencing activity — or alleged undesirable activity. From the technical aspects, historical research, client interviews, and observation, something has warranted a closer look or plan of action to prevent unruly spooks and suspected infestations from getting out of hand. At times, these individuals are a necessary means of combating the most brutal forces known to man. Methane Collection System: As one may imagine, gas stinks. It’s also toxic and extremely flammable. The methane collection system in a spirit dump is a culmination of multiple facets and various conditions that come together and form the infestation. And yes, sometimes they can produce putrid odors. When an area of land has been super-saturated with negative energy as outlined earlier in this article, the harmful energies strive to take control. In very serious cases involving demons and their like, the buildup of negative energy can have the same lethal impact as that of methane gas: death and destruction. Documented cases involving oppressions and possessions, as well as infestations, have cited foul-smelling odors. From a relatively small location such as a home to a broader area such as a town, or specific region, an infestation can cause
A spirit infestation can cause danger not only to a single individual, but to many.

danger not only to a single, living individual, but to many. This is demonstrated in locations that have had multiple suicides, murders, or other tragedies transpire over a period of time. Covers & Caps: The metaphor for this aspect of the spirit dump has to do with burial of the deceased. Aside from the obvious analogy of placing dirt over a casket, taking it a step further, the actual ceremony and any associated rites is an important part of facilitating spirit’s smooth “transition” to the other side. Too many times those who have been left to die without proper burial can become restless, lack spiritual direction postmortem, or become trapped. This can create many issues for surrounding environments, both immediate and not so immediate. Poltergeists, ornery sprites, and other phenomena may occur, again, taking into account specific details relative to the manner of death, along with the heaviness of imprint. Given the analogy, Ground Water Monitoring Stations work much in the same as actual blessings, prayers, space clearings, and other continued forms of positive encouragement for spirit, in order to promote crossing and foster peace. This aspect is something that begins upon death and continues for as long as the living believes that it’s necessary to create tranquility for the departed. Separate to the covers and caps, this is something that extends beyond the actual last rites and burial. Identifying Spirit Dumps and Taking Action Occasionally, there may be an indication that a space clearing may be needed to prevent further contamination, especially in cases where there has been a recurrence of
tragedy and death at a specific location. Not only is the offering of prayers and blessings spiritually healthy and helpful for those who have passed, but it renders a sense of peace and control to those left to grieve or deal with the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual issues that may arise. In areas that have been inundated with repetitive negative events, or in regions that may be home to naturally occurring vortices and portals, it is important to pay attention to patterns. Histories of paranormal phenomena in a centralized location may be more than it appears. Speaking with the people of the community, conducting historical research, and paranormal investigations are part of deciphering what may or may not be taking place. An overall survey of the negative, and/or positive impact, is also worth factoring into the equation. Homes and buildings can be infested, as can several blocks within a community. If cases are showing unusually disturbing patterns among a family, or the local town folk, and historical data has trended violence in and around that region, inclusive of cases of oppression and possession, it may be time to call in reinforcements. For sake of this article, it is also wise to briefly address geographical issues, such as gasses, minerals, and other naturally occurring formations in a region experiencing high levels of paranormal activity. In certain cases, studies have shown a correlation of existing minerals, such as limestone, magnetite, and quartz, as facilitating the clustering of energies, entities, and other nasty elementals. Some sites have documented cases of paranormal activity having taken place for decades. An important note: Not all of these areas are necessarily riddled with negative energy. Another consideration dating back centuries is that Native Americans, as well as other indigenous tribes, have designated specific areas known as sacred ground. Celebrations and gatherings have occurred on both large and small areas of land, deemed to possess special qualities, and yet not always were they positive qualities. In fact, given the history of some, the power of the land was very dark, if not evil, and the tribes would make effort to atone it or feed it positive energy. Regardless, it was respected, as well as a very serious part of their culture. Think of this as keeping a beast at bay, should it be more negatively impacted.
Take Caution When Dealing With a Spirit Dump Over time, some regions that have had dedicated sacred ground have suffered much hardship, death, and decline of civilized life. Layer upon layer of tragedy has been piled onto the land, and that negative energy has adversely impacted the immediate and surrounding environment. In time, and considering the pooling of negativity, along with the land’s attraction to other negative energies, an infestation may occur. So, what to do with these dumps and cesspools? That is a tough, well-debated question. Some would say that a space clearing (or exorcism, should it have focused on an individual) will dispel the demon(s) and monstrous energies, while others state that it only displaces the evil, leaving it to find a new home. Whether it becomes polarized to a nearby spirit dump or finds a weak link to prey upon and make it their host, this may only result in a simple relocation to the house next door or the neighboring town. Regardless of what does or does not transpire, spirit dumps and infestations are the worst that life and death have to offer. Laymen ghost hunters and huntresses, as well as overzealous demonologists and energy workers,
are no matches for these forces. In fact, they sadly become a snack for the resident sludge, resulting in a host of unwanted issues, such as increased abusive and addictive behaviors, illness, sleeplessness, personality changes, oppressions, and possessions. Eventually, when given enough fuel, they will cause death and destruction. Spirit dumps need to be controlled, yet only by those that are responsible, professionally trained individuals. Infestations are not fodder for thrill-seekers and a pass-the-class-and-get-your-degree demonologist. A celestial cesspool, and its nondescript, destructive powers, knows how to manipulate both humans and the environment — and that is serious business. For those who are experienced, qualified, and accountable paranormal investigators, the job may be tough. Never be afraid to call in reinforcements or clergy who are trained to deal with these situations. Such hotspots are not the place for inflated egos, muscle-flexing, and rendering pride over being safe. And as for a final thought about spirit dumps and how you can protect yourself and the environment … As Ben Franklin so eloquently stated, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Always use protection.
A celestial cesspool knows how to manipulate both humans and the environment.
