My Top Three Paranormal Investigators
n the same vein as Karen Frazier’s monthly Top 10 list, I thought I would give my input on who I consider the top three paranormal investigators of all time. Why the number three? Well, three struck me as a nice number. With three being a mystical number associated with important things, such as the Christian trinity, the three acts in a story, and my favorites, the Three Amigos and The Three Stooges, it also is commonly found in mathematics, science, and religion. So, here it goes, my top three paranormal investigators.

Digital Audio Recorders: Part 2 By Jack Kenna, Rensselaer Paranormal Research and S.P.I.R.I.T.S. of New England
For Part 1 of this article, see our June 2013 issue.
n last month’s Equipment Update article, I promised to give you my personal top ranking for quality digital audio recorders that won’t break the bank. And here they are!
1. Olympus Digital Voice Recorder, Model: DM-620 (Approx. Cost: $150) This one may have a few extra functions that you don’t really need for paranormal investigating, such as the expandable memory card slot, but the high-quality TRESMIC 3 stereo microphone system makes it worth the price for the serious paranormal investigator. 2. Olympus, Model: WS-700M (Approx. Cost: $110) In my opinion, this one is a great investment for the seasoned or serious investigator. It has all five of the above-recommended requirements, with a 4GB internal flash memory for extended recording time. 3. Olympus, Model: WS-600S (Approx. Cost: $84) If there is any recorder out there that exactly meets my five requirements for a quality audio recorder for paranormal investigating, then this is the one. It has everything the seasoned to beginner investigator needs to capture quality recordings and easily download their files for review, at a very reasonable price. 4. Olympus, Model: VN-8100PC Digital Voice Recorder (Approx. Cost: $63) This is actually an excellent little recorder for the beginning investigator or paranormal enthusiast. The only drawback to this recorder is that it does not have a built-in stereo microphone, but it does have a microphone input that you can plug a separate external mic into. This allows you to upgrade the recorder to a better microphone later on if you so desire. I actually own this recorder and have used it on many investigations as a standalone recorder, set up with a DVR camera, to capture audio during the entire night’s investigation. It has worked out very well, and I have
6. Sony Digital Voice Recorder, Model: ICDUX512 (Approx. Cost: $110) This is another excellent recorder for the seasoned and/or serious investigator. Again I like this one for its ability to record in PCM (.WAV) format for recording uncompressed audio and stereo sound. It also has the ability, like the Sony ICDSX712, to accept a microSD card for expanded memory storage. 7. Sony Digital Voice Recorder, Model: ICDAX412 (Approx. Cost: $84) This is the last of the Sony recorders I would recommend, even for the beginning investigator or paranormal enthusiast. It has the all of the five qualities that are laid out above, plus it has the microSD card memory expansion option. And the price is very reasonable. Higher-End Digital Audio Recorders If you want to invest into a much higher end digital audio recorder, I would recommend one of the following. But remember, these high-end recorders come with a higher price tag: captured several quality Class A and B EVPs with it. I’m sure you’ve noticed that my first four recommendations are all Olympus brand recorders. This is because, based on my own personal experience, Olympus manufactures a high-quality, durable, and reliable recorder. The sound quality that they produce is excellent, even in the lower cost models. I own five of their recorders and have accidently dropped more than one of them from at least a four-tofive-foot height on more than one occasion, and they still perform as if nothing ever happened. The menu functions are easy to access and easy to figure out, and the record, stop, play, and volume buttons are always easy to find and use. With that said, I also can recommend the following Sony brand recorders for the budget-conscious investigator: 5. Sony Digital Voice Recorder, Model: ICDSX712 (Approx. Cost: $150) There are a couple of reasons I like and recommend this recorder, especially for the serious investigator. First, it can record in PCM (.WAV) format. Second, I like the two-position adjustable stereo microphone, which enhances your ability to capture high-quality stereo audio recordings. And third, I like the microSD card capability for expanding the memory. I also really like the price, given the advanced functions this recorder has to offer.
1. Zoom H4 Handy Portable Digital Recorder (Approx. Cost: $250–$300) This model features high-quality, built-in X/Y stereo microphones that are better than CD-quality recording capability, large memory (32GB), and the ability to run on AC power or “AA” batteries, making this well worth the price for the seasoned and/or serious paranormal investigator.
Higher end recorders come with a higher price tag. 2. Zoom H2 Handy Portable Digital Recorder (Approx. Cost: $130–$150) This is another great recorder for the seasoned and/ or serious paranormal investigator. Its 360-degree sound recording in CD quality on two or four channels makes this a great advanced recorder. Not only can you capture the highest quality recordings, but you can also use the software that’s included to tell what direction a sound or voice is coming from.
3. RT-EVP Digital Recorder & Spirit Box (Approx. Cost: $275–$290) This is currently the only digital recorder that has been designed and built by a paranormal investigator for paranormal investigators. Although it does not meet all of the five requirements I have defined above, it does record in .WAV format and, of course, has the great function to be able to listen to your recording in “Real Time” while you’re recording it with setting anything from a one-to-60-second delay. The advantage of this is that if you do capture an EVP, you will hear it within seconds after it’s captured, which may allow you to respond to it. The other great function of this device is the built-in Spirit Box, so it’s actually two devices in one. You can also record your Spirit Box session on the device while performing it, so you can review it later and save any potential evidence you might have captured. It also now has an 8GB memory, which is very helpful for this device given the large file sizes that are created with the higher quality recording modes it has. This is a fairly complicated device, though, so I really only recommend it for the serious/experienced paranormal investigator. I personally used this device during several investigations and had some very interesting results with it using the built-in spirit box function. And also being able to hear EVPs as they were captured allowed us to ask potentially more relevant questions during our EVP sessions.
Research Digital Audio Recorders Before Making a Choice You can of course find out more about all of these recorders on the Internet. All of these items can be found either online or at some of your local electronics stores. The last three items can be found online at Amazon.com, eBay, GhostShop.com, and numerous other online stores. That about covers everything in regards to digital audio recorders that you will need for your paranormal investigating. I hope that you find all of this information helpful or at least informative. You can also find much more detailed information about all of these products online. Digital audio recorders described in this article can be found at www.bestbuy. com. Once there, in the search box, type in “Digital Audio Recorders” and click on the spyglass icon. Now I’m NOT recommending or even suggesting that you buy from Best Buy. It’s your choice where to buy from. But I am recommending that you go to the Best Buy Website to review their specifications and do a comparison check on these recorders, as Best Buy’s Website provides great detailed information on all the products they sell.
This device comes with a built-in Spirit Box.

Black Cross Paranormal: Thinking Outside the Box
By Cheryl Knight
orn and raised out West, Ryleigh Black spent most of her childhood growing up on a reservation in Arizona. Since childhood, she was brought up with a belief in the Wiccan religion. Then, as a young teen, she moved to North Eastern Pennsylvania and lived with her grandmother. “I’ve pretty much been interested in the paranormal all of my life,” Ryleigh said. “And when I moved in with my grandmother, her house was filled with spirits. And not the kind you drink!” In fact, in earlier years, Ryleigh’s bedroom had been used as a “viewing room” for the family members who had passed. “I would see them in my dreams and describe them, what they looked like, their names, right down to their clothing, to my family. And my mom’s side, being Russian Orthodox, simply told me to pray and there was no such thing.” But Ryleigh continued to read everything she could get her hands on regarding the paranormal. Later, the family discovered glass negative photographs that included many of Ryleigh’s deceased family members that she had earlier described in great detail. “That raised some eyebrows,” Ryleigh said. In 2008, Ryleigh founded Black Cross Paranormal with her husband, Stephen, who is co-founder, lead tech, and lead investigator for the team. The family-run team also includes Ryleigh and Stephen’s son, Ryan. Ryleigh recently talked to Paranormal Underground about her interest in the paranormal, her team members, and her investigative techniques. ***** Q: Tell us about yourself. Ryleigh: I was in the coast guard for 16 years as a flight medic with Search and Rescue. Now I’m retired and live with a family all my own in Rhode Island. I model, surf, ex-

ercise, fish, cook, clean, heck — I’m the perfect housewife — in my own mind! I’m a mom and a step-mom. I’m in love with my husband, and I absolutely love my little dog, Lilly. On top of all that, I’m a paranormal investigator and I host my own radio show, Club Para. Q: Tell us more about your paranormal experiences. Ryleigh: My first experiences were in my grandmother’s home in Pennsylvania. I was so interested in the paranormal. And, finally, books started to come out at the library in the 1980s so that I could read up on it. Then I discovered that I wasn’t crazy after all! Well, In 2008, Ryleigh founded Black Cross Paranormal with her husband, Stephen, a little, but we all have to be don’t and son, Ryan. They now investigate mostly historical locations. we? Otherwise we’d go insane. My first experience was hearing my grandfather’s work boots walkwe had between eight to 12 people. But after having some ing up and down the stairs late at night. That experience opened and is a junior investigator in training), and myself. We the door for me to explore and investigate so much more find this to be the perfect balance and it works for us. Ryleigh: I would have to say that the audio side of investigating interests me most, because I get to hear the spirits, whether it be last words, cries for help, residual or intelligent communications, etc. I know that there’s a lot of unfinished business with many of these spirits. For me, it’s letting them know that their words are actually being heard and that they are not forgotten.
Q: Talk about your team members. Ryleigh: Our son, Ryan, has been involved and interested in the paranormal for about five years now. He’s always been interested in spooky stuff and loves Halloween. He’s always wanted to watch all the shows on TV and has grown up learning how to respectfully investigate. He’s a very well balanced kid. Ryan has been raised in the Catholic religion, but also understands and respects the Wiccan and other belief systems. He’s an honor roll student in school, and is totally into sports. He loves basketball and currently wants to go to Syracuse. He starts high school next year, and if he was at all unbalanced, we would never allow him to investigate. He’s a very solid, good kid, and he knows there is so much more out there than what he’s been taught through religion due to his own personal experiences. He’s inves-
“I discovered I wasn’t crazy after all!”
Q: Tell us about Black Cross Paranormal and its mission. Ryleigh: I had founded Black Cross Paranormal back in 2008 along with my husband Stephen. We both had our own very unique experiences and had been investigating, but nothing formal like a team. The team went through many phases, and at one time

tigated side by side with some very big names in the community as well! He’s a true professional and has learned respectful techniques and proper use of equipment. My husband, Stephen, never had any paranormal experiences as a child. In fact, it wasn’t until he was well into his thirties that he had his first experience — a full body apparition, what he likes to call the Holy Grail. That was 12 years ago, and Stephen has been dabbling in this field ever since. He’s a very technical person, so he naturally takes the lead with equipment and setting things up in the background. He developed and manages our Websites, blackcrossparanormal.com and clubpara.com, and does a lot of video work as well. He’s extremely creative that way! He does amazing photography work (a lot of my modeling photos were taken by him), as well as post-edit work with promotional photos and or video editing. He’s done many promos for other events and a ton of work for a lot of people in the community, as well as TV personalities. Stephen was also brought up under the Catholic religion; however, since his first experience, he knows now that there’s so much more out there other than Heaven, Hell, and Purgatory! He’s always one to debunk or figure out why something is the way it is. It’s funny because I throw so many things at him and then he throws so much of it out! As for myself, you already know some of my history and where I came from, but my strengths are in EVP work. I’m coming to terms with being referred to as an empath by other people. I see things, hear things, channel things, and have precognitive dreams as well. I drive my husband crazy with the number of times I’ve told him about a dream and then either that day or within two days it comes true! These dreams are usually associated with life-changing events. I’m no specialist at this whole empath thing and look forward to working with other empaths that have a better handle on it, but I’m learning! People also refer to me as
being a beacon of some sort. I seem to attract the spirits. My husband says the same about my modeling pics and the living too. Ha! But all in all, we all contribute from what our strengths are, and our team (just like our family) is in harmony. Q: Tell us about your nickname, The Outlaw. Ryleigh: Oh that. LOL! Since the moment I could walk as a baby, I was breaking all the rules. Starting from ripping my diaper off and running bare-assed down the beach to 42 and ripping off my bikini and running bareassed down the beach! I dance to the beat of my own drum, and I’ve learned many of life’s lessons the hard way. But I’ll tell you this much; I did it all on my own without being told what to do. I show respect when respect is given in return. And if not, hell hath no fury! Q: What types of cases and sites has Black Cross Paranormal investigated? Ryleigh: My team and I have done mostly historical locations. As much as I would like to help people in residential locations, I don’t deal well with other people’s drama, and I’ve found that the residential cases that I’ve personally come across required the inhabitants to get mental help, rather than paranormal help. I’m not saying that they’re all like that because they’re obviously not. I’m just not cut out to deal with people’s sensitivity. I’m too blunt. Q: What type of equipment do you use on investigations? EPAS Seeks Answers to Age-Old Questions By Rick E. Hale, Foundations Psychical Research
ver the past decade, we have seen an explosion of all things paranormal. What was once considered to be a taboo subject is now part of pop culture. It would appear that this is not going to change. This is especially true in the United States. But what about our neighbors on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean? Have they experienced the same phenomenon? The answer is a resounding yes. Recently, I have become friends with one of these European groups, the European Paranormal Activity Society (EPAS). This team includes a group of learned people who take the subject of paranormal research and investigation seriously. It’s a group that I am proud to know and call colleagues. Allow me to introduce you to EPAS founders Maximilian Maresca and Cindy Pavan, cofounder Guiseppe (Pippo) Ferrara, and investigator Alberto Finotti. Paranormal Underground recently spoke to EPAS Founder Maximilian Maresca about how the paranormal field is treated in the group’s native Italy, as well as on the rest of the continent. ***** Q: Everyone has a story about why they got involved in the field of paranormal research and investigation. What sparked your interest? Max: Cindy has experienced paranormal phenomena since she was a child. And Pippo has studied and researched the paranormal since the early 1970s. He has written about it for various magazines and has broadcast a radio program about the paranormal for many years. As for me, I can say that I was interested in the paranormal before interest in paranormal research began

spreading throughout Italy. Before EPAS, I founded another group. It’s become a trend to start a paranormal group here. I’m proud to say that our research and work is followed by many people, and we are considered a leader in Italy and Europe. We have a long way to go yet. Q: As the founder of EPAS, how did the group come together? Max: I came from the group that I founded together with two other people, and Cindy requested that we create another group. Once we had the name for the group, EPAS was born. I then contacted Pippo almost immediately, be-
cause I had already known him for a long time. We also now have a great investigator with us, Alberto, who is extremely capable and independent. Q: EPAS is part of a much larger organization. Can you tell our readers about that? Max: EPAS is trying to organize a worldwide network of groups who share our way of working. However, we do not want affiliates. We are looking for groups to do joint investigations with. EPAS wants to become a reference for the world of the paranormal. Q: The United States is saturated in the paranormal. What is it like across Europe? Max: Italy is essentially the same. Unfortunately, we see that dozens of paranormal groups are being formed in Italy that do not have passion for the paranormal and mystery. Instead, they are designed for one purpose: to become famous and go on television. Q: Can you tell our readers about Spectrum? And will it be available in English?
EPAS collaborates with the University of Padua’s Institute of Psychiatry to show that sometimes paranormal phenomena does exist without the presence of any psychological disorder.
Max: Spectrum: Latitudine Mistero is written by Ottavio Adriano Spinelli, an Italian writer who has been working for years with mystery and esotericism. We asked him to write the book. It describes our group’s activities as scientific researchers of paranormal phenomena. In the book, Ottavio narrates the adventures of modern Ghost Hunters. I think the novel will captivate readers. The English translation will be done eventually, but not immediately.
We are unique in Italy to have this title. We collaborate with the University of Padua’s Institute of Psychiatry, a protocol to show that those who experience paranormal phenomena are not necessarily sick and that sometimes paranormal phenomena does exist without the presence of any psychological disorder. We present seminars and conferences about paranormal phenomena at universities and schools of all levels. We also assist the police in investigations for unsolved cases and many other activities.
“We are more inclined to the scientific approach.”
Q: I understand EPAS holds an official position with the Italian government. In what capacity is that position? Max: EPAS is an association recognized by the Italian government. We are affiliated to a national body accredited by the Minister of the Interior, Ministry of Labour, and that of the university and research.
Q: What protocols does EPAS use in the field? Is it primarily a scientific approach, or do you employ the spiritual approach as well? Max: We are more inclined to the scientific approach at this time. Psychics do not cooperate with us because we believe that this category is full of fakes. We are not op-

posed to working with psychics who demonstrates legitimate skills, but until then we trust only our instruments. Q: There are many theories on what a ghost might be. Are we dealing with life after death? Or something else? Max: There are so many theories about this. And we must seek the answers in a scientific way. We are energy, and energy cannot be destroyed. There is certainly a world parallel, where we trek when the physical body dissolves. And when these two worlds collide, we see them and they sometimes see us (the theory of a space time hole). Q: You have a Web-based TV show on Keltoi Radio. Besides that, what other projects are in EPAS’ future? Max: We have many projects in mind. Certainly, we would like to make a documentary about the mysteries of paranormal phenomena. And we are already active on this. Then we would like to do a tour of the world’s most haunted places. Q: Let’s say I am a tourist traveling in your country, and I’m looking for haunted locations to explore. Can you suggest any? Maybe some of your personal favorites. Max: There are many haunted places in Italy. Our country is rich in Medieval history. The most haunted is the famous castle of the route in Turin. Also, I recommend the Fortress of Bardi, where we found anomalies. Other options are the many abandoned asylums here, such as the famous mental hospital that we saw in the movie ESP: Paranormal Phenomena.

Lucid Dreaming: Tapping Into Your Spiritual Awareness
By Jackie Chin, http://psychicconnextions.blogspot.com/
any times my clients ask how they can become more in tune with their spiritual nature and gain insight into their subconscious. The easiest way to accomplish this is through the ability to access their dream time and become aware of when they are dreaming. This process of awareness dreaming is called lucid dreaming. When you are able to knowingly dream and take in information from a spiritual level, you can begin to understand why you are where you are in your life. These dreams can help you become aware of future events, explain recent past events, or help you gain guidance into a matter that you would otherwise feel was hopeless. In order to have a meaningful dream, however, you really have to be deeply relaxed and have a desire to open your subconscious to a higher form of vibration. The Key to Opening Up Your Subconscious Is to Relax Nowadays, many people are so stressed out from their daily lives that they find this deep sleep to be very elusive. What I recommend to clients is to have an evening ritual time, about an hour prior to sleep, where they shut off their TVs and electronic devices, or at least put them on a level that is hushed. A warm bath is ideal, but shower works too. If this is just not something that you personally can do on a nightly basis, then when you know that you have something you want to work on in dream time, prepare yourself at least an hour beforehand. Relaxing music, scents, and temperature of the room are useful methods to calm the body as well. Another part of relaxing is to involve the sense of smell through the use of herbals. There are a number of herbs that can be placed into a small drawstring pouch and placed in your pillow or night stand.
• Lily of the Valley • Lavender • Mint • Rosemary • Rose petals • Chamomile • Mandrake pieces • Cloves • Pine • Poppy leaves • Mistletoe • Jasmine • St. John’s Wort All of these herbs have abilities to assist you in opening your subconscious to the psychic realm of lucid dream time. Once you decide what combination suits you and have found or made a small drawstring pouch, fill it with the herbal combination. As you work on your dream pouch, think on things that bring you pleasure, and if you so desire pray to your guardian angel or spiritual guide to help you bring peaceful energy into the dream pouch. Also, if you have any amulets that you would like to include before you seal it off do so now. Once the dream pouch is sealed, it should not be reopened. It is also recommend that you create a new dream
pouch every few weeks, sooner if you feel the urge to change. Dried herbs, although very fragrant in the beginning, do tend to lose their pungent scents. This is one of the reasons behind changing out the dream pouch. Another is that as with all things they will absorb energies, and once they become overloaded, they no longer serve a useful purpose. How to Track Your Results Using a Dream Journal Once you have started your lucid dreaming process and you awaken, it is best to write your experiences down in a dream journal. Don’t worry about not recalling everything in the beginning stages of this type of psychic awareness. What is important is to write as much as you can remember, including how you were feeling, what your body remembers, and anything that makes sense to you from your dream. If for some reason you do not have any lucid dreams or cannot recall what you dreamed about, do not worry. This is a process just as any psychic awareness, and with time you will recall your dreams. When you have gotten to that point in your sleeping cycles where you can recall your dreams, place those thoughts into a journal. You can use either one with paper and pen or an online journal of your choice. It is not important how you track your dream work, but it is important that you do it. There are a few basic details that are important to start your dream journal. These are: • The date. • Moon cycle if you follow such matters. • Theme of the dream.
• Symbols. • People that are in it. • What is the environment? • Are you reminded of anything that is a part of your personal history? • What feelings are attached to this dream? • Are you currently in awake time dealing with something that may have triggered this dream? • Is this dream related to any that have gone before? • Do you feel in awake time prompted to do something because of this dream? • Have you gained any information in awake time that was gained in lucid dreaming? • Are there any aspects of this dream that are at this point in time unexplainable? • Upon waking do you recall any body sensations, such as having feeling as if your spirit needed to re-enter your body? Are your legs feeling lighter than they should be? Are you feeling any sensation of tingling, warmer than normal, or cooler than you should be after awakening from sleep? No matter what your results are regarding lucid dreaming, remember the important part here is to acknowledge that you have decided to try something different and that you are learning more about what makes you who you are. Good luck and BEST DREAMS. For more information on lucid dreaming techniques, check out these articles: http://www.wikihow.com/Lucid-Dream http://dreaminglucid.com/fivetechniques.html

Case Files Of The Unknown: Haunted Sites
By Deborah Lantz, www.facebook.com/yourspiritbeacon
have recently returned from a wonderful weekend in historic and haunted Savannah, Georgia. I must say that I found Savannah to have an almost supernatural shadow hanging over it. You feel it as soon as you drive down one of its many historic streets lined with oak trees shrouded in Spanish moss. In fact, according to our host at the Eliza Thompson House, Savannah is known as one of Americas most haunted cities. We only had the weekend to explore the city, but what I discovered about Savannah is making me a true believer. Our lodgings were at the beautiful bed and breakfast known as the Eliza Thompson House. Built in 1847, it was the first house built on historic Jones Street, voted the most beautiful street in Savannah. Nothing says old South more than this beautiful inn. The Haunted Eliza Thompson House Upon our arrival, we were greeted with a tour of the building and then ushered into the parlor for cocktail hour. We had our choice of adult beverages, as well as soda for the kids. Appetizers, cheese and crackers, fresh fruit, and the added charm of all the beautiful antiques in this old home made for a wonderful first impression. I asked our hostess if she had any paranormal experiences there in the home. She smiled politely and said she would prefer not to discuss it because she didn’t want me to think she was crazy. I told her that I was a psychic medium and nothing sounds crazy to me. She laughed and shared a more recent experience she had while sitting in the registration room, located next to the parlor. She said that several weeks ago a young couple was enjoying cocktail hour while she sat at the registration desk getting caught up on paper work. All of a sudden she heard a loud “POP” and then a scream from the female.

She jumped up and rushed into the parlor where she found the stopper to the Scotch bottle in the middle of the floor. The Scotch decanter and glasses are located on a table in the corner of the room. The couple was on the opposite side of the room from the decanter. The young lady was visibly shaken. The hostess asked what had happened. The young woman said that she and her husband were arguing over

Also, in the Captain’s Room in The Pirate’s House are pages from a very rare and early edition for the book Treasure Island. Savannah is mentioned several times in this book by author Robert Louis Stevenson. Lots of the action in the book took place in The Pirate’s House! It is said that Captain Flint, who buried the treasure on Treasure Island, died in one of the rooms at The Pirate’s House. Our tour guide explained that many people have claimed to have seen Captain Flint in one of the upstairs’ windows. Another story from The Pirate’s House is that of two women who had taken the city bus home from work. The bus dropped them off near The Pirate’s House where the ladies then walked by on the way to their homes. Both of these ladies claim to have seen a little boy peering out at them from a first-floor window. The ladies were so concerned that this child was locked in the building since it was so very late at night. They tried to get the child to come to the front door to see if they could help him get

out. The child never moved from the window. They called the owner of The Pirate’s House about this little boy. He laughed and said that the little boy has been seen many times in the first floor window and not to be alarmed because it was not a living child. The tour of the old haunted Pirate’s House proved to be well worth it. Our tour of Savannah was extremely interesting, and if you were a fan of the supernatural I would encourage you to put Savannah, Georgia, on your bucket list.

Sea Monsters in South Carolina? By Jill Stefko, Ph.D., Suite 101 Contributing Writer
weird creature’s body washed up on Folly Beach in South Carolina during early 2012, creating speculation on the Internet that a dead sea monster may have been discovered. Was it a cryptid? The tannish-brown carcass had greenish patches and dinosaur-like bony plates on its sides. Photos suggest it was longer than 10 feet. It had a salty, repulsive smell. Speculations included that it was a dinosaur-type of a sea monster, a noxious mutation, or a chupacabra. Scientists were skeptical that it was a cryptid, an unknown mysterious animal. Two South Carolina Sea Monster Kin? Last year, a sea monster was sighted in salt water off of the Alaskan shore. It had been dubbed Caddy for Cadborosaurus willsi, which means reptile or lizard, after it was sighted in Cadboro Bay, British Columbia, centuries ago. Going back further to 1901, a sea monster made a fuss. The HMS Daedalus crew sighted a sea monster that caused a naval controversy. The British Royal Navy frigate was sailing near the Cape of Good Hope when the Officer of the Watch saw something in the sea. He called Captain McQuhae and several crew members to come onto the deck to see it. “It” was a mysterious serpentine sea creature that was about 60 feet long and approximately 15 inches in diameter. Its head was four feet above the water as it swam by their vessel. The creature moved very quickly, with neither horizontal nor vertical undulating movements. It remained in sight for around 20 minutes. South Carolina Sea Monster Identified! One of the first experts to identify the monster was veterinarian Dr. Shane Boylan from the South Carolina

Aquarium. Two features allowed him to categorize the fish — the animal’s form and distinctive bony plates. The aquatic monster was an Atlantic sturgeon. Part of the reason why the fish’s identity was hard to define is that sturgeons are not normally a brownish tan color, but are lighter colored and silvery. The monster’s flesh color changed as it was parched by the sun. Sturgeons are one of the oldest bony fish in existence. Atlantic sturgeons are 15 feet long and can weigh over 500 pounds. Could There Be Cryptid Water Monsters? Many people believe that Champ, the Lake Champlain water monster, first sighted in 1609 by European explorer Samuel de Champlain, is a cryptid. He wrote that local Amerindians described a fish with a head as large as two fists, a snout two and a half feet long with a
double row of sharp, treacherous teeth. Its body, which resembled a pike’s, had silvery gray color scales. There are other people who think de Champlain’s description was that of an alligator gar fish. Oarfish — long, snake-like, and nearly finless fish, with large round eyes — have also been mistaken for water monsters. Some have been reported to be more than 50 feet long. One washed up on a Bermuda beach in 1860.
been solved; however, many other water cryptids remain unknown and mysterious animals. Maybe, someday, scientists will be able to identify these animals and they will join the ranks of known ones, like the coelacanth, a fish thought to be extinct until one was caught in 1938 off of the coast of Africa. It’s been labeled a living fossil. Could this be true of other unidentified sea creatures? According to many sightings, sonar readings, and other evidence, this could be possible.
Some Water Monster Sightings Remain Unidentified The enigma of the South Carolina sea monster has

The Rise and Fall of Project Blue Book By Chad Wilson
roject Blue Book will go down in the annals of UFO lore as one of the most comprehensive studies of the UFO phenomenon by a governmental agency. Following in the stead of Projects Sign and Grudge, respectively, Project Blue Book was established in 1952 amid concerns that increased UFO sightings could pose a national security threat to the U.S. Its primary mission was to determine if UFOs did pose a threat to the security of the United States, especially in light of fears of infiltration from its Cold War enemy the Soviet Union. This study was to be accomplished through the scientific analysis of UFO-related data. Operated by the U.S. Air Force throughout the U.S., the study was established in response to a recent spate of UFO sightings, especially in the area of Washington, D.C., in the summer of 1952. The project ran from early 1952 until early 1970, after which it was deemed by the Condon Committee that further research would be unlikely to yield any significant results in the area of UFOs. The name Project Blue Book referred to the blue booklets utilized for testing by many colleges and universities at the time of its founding. It was felt that the highranking officers involved in the project gave the project such close attention that it felt as if the study of UFOs was as important to them as a college final exam. According to J. Allen Hynek, one of the leading scientists involved with the Condon Committee, out of roughly 15,000 cases studies, a total of 640 (or 4.3%) were finally determined as being “unexplained.” The final finding of Project Blue Book was that UFOs more than likely had one of multiple explanations, including: 1. A mild form of hysteria or mass hallucination. 2. Hoaxes perpetrated by various individuals seeking to gain attention or publicity. 3. A side effect suffered by those with psychopathological problems.
Project Blue Book Special Report #14 (dated May 5, 1955) was the climax of an in-depth study of UFOs conducted by the Batelle Memorial Institute for the Air Technical Intelligence Center located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio.
4. Misidentified objects. The above explanations contradicted an earlier report, Project Blue Book Special Report #14, which ran from 1952 to 1954 and stated that a percentage of sightings at that time, 22%, remained unsolved. As for future projects to study UFO sightings by the U.S. government and military, no such plans have been announced. In the time following the closing of Project Blue Book, official Air Force memorandums have been signed stating that “reports of UFOs” would be handled per the standard Air Force procedure designed for this purpose. It has been noted, though, by those approaching the U.S. Air Force about UFO sightings that observers have been directed to contact public or private organizations instead. To find more information about Project Blue Book, visit http://www.archives.gov/foia/ufos.html or http://www. cufos.org/BB_Unknowns.html.

AN IRREPLACEABLE LOSS The Life and Death of a Poltergeist Agent: Part 2
By Dr. Barry Taff For Part 1 of this article, see our June 2013 issue.
ctober 26 marked the beginning of a substantial escalation in the frequency, magnitude, and nature of events to come. Lisa was upstairs getting ready for bed, and Barry was out on a late shoot. Just after Lisa decided to put her book away and hit the sack, Barry’s dog (Beau, given to him by an ex-girlfriend) decided to jump onto the bed. Beau was very jealous of Lisa’s taking her place in bed. Not unexpectedly, Lisa was not too fond of Beau as she was a present from Barry’s “ex,” as well as being very aggressive and territorial. As Beau jumps up toward the bed, something interrupted her flight mid-jump. Lisa described it as if an invisible wall or pair of large hands abruptly grabbed the dog in the air. The dog was momentarily suspended in mid-air as if it were defying gravity, then violently thrown or repelled backwards, slamming into the wall beneath the window across from the foot of the bed. Beau was momentarily stunned, after which she got up and shook, as if having a seizure. Then the dog let out a loud moan and began to visually “track” something unseen in the bedroom while growling and barking as she hunched down in the corner of the room. The dog then abruptly ran out of the bedroom. Lisa was almost in shock from the event and immediately called Barry on his cell. He eventually calmed Lisa down. Strange Occurrences Continue to Occur in Barry and Lisa’s Residence Moving on to November 1, 2001, it was around 2:30 a.m. as Barry and Lisa were asleep upstairs. There was a sudden, loud sound within the bedroom — the high decibel sound of cracking wood or perhaps that of a high-volt-
age, electrical discharge. The event lasted around three to four seconds and appeared to come from right next to the bed. Lisa was terrified and started to shake and cry. Not surprisingly, just prior to the incident, the dog rapidly dove under the bed as if she anticipated the event. Four days later on November 5, at around 11:15 a.m. Barry and Lisa were in bed when Lisa repeatedly felt her calf being touched and tapped by icy-cold, invisible fin-
gers. She jumped out of bed terrified. Hours go by before Barry could calm her down. We now jump to just past Thanksgiving on the 28 of November at 1 a.m. While Barry was downstairs watching TV, he heard very loud pounding coming from the ceiling of the living room (three to four bangs). He said it sounded like a big sledgehammer being slammed into the bedroom floor. When Barry ran upstairs to investigate, he found Lisa sound asleep. Nothing in the room was out of place. The very next day, as if to further inflame Lisa’s fears, at around 8 p.m. she observed a can of empty dog food that Beau had dragged into the entrance hall move across the carpet into the living room under its own power. Lisa was alone and froze in her tracks. As funny as this event is, Lisa was home alone having to cope with all of this without Barry. It’s now December 2, and everything seemed to have tapered off. However, at 5:20 p.m. when Barry and Lisa Lisa McIntosh and Barry Conrad. were lying in bed, they both heard the sounds of someone or something with great weight coming up the stairs and which was certainly forced into action here. approaching the bedroom door. Barry, Lisa, and I were watching videos when my chair was violently struck, twice, by an invisible force that felt as if a baseball bat had been used. My response was simple and direct. I jumped up and out of the chair immediately. Four decades of this work may have somewhat jaded and battle-hardened me, but I am human and do possess a fight or flight reaction,
The Calm Before the Storm For the next two months, everything seemed to calm down, as there was not a single event experienced in the house. The world had returned to normal again. At least it would appear so to Lisa and Barry. Come February 14, 2002, their peaceful bliss started to crack apart once again. It was 7 p.m., and Barry and Beau were at the bottom of the stairwell when both he and the dog looked up as they heard what sounded like Lisa walking down the staircase. However, there was no one there. Lisa was in the

bathroom upstairs preparing to leave and was nowhere near the stairs. So much for home sweet home. As the cycle appeared to be starting again, Barry and Lisa were not that surprised when only four days later, on February 18, the next event occurred. While Lisa was in the upstairs bathroom at around 11 p.m. getting ready for bed, she clearly heard disembodied voices “counting down.” She quickly came out of the bathroom to see if the bedroom’s TV or radio was on, only to find Barry already in bed. She told him what she had just heard while in the bathroom, and he responded that he hadn’t heard anything. The very next morning, the 19th of February at 10:30 a.m., Lisa was again in the upstairs bathroom when something violently pulled on her long, blonde hair. She really began to panic at this point. Barry had left very early that day on a shoot, leaving Lisa alone in the house. Throughout the entire day, the telephone rang incessantly, but no one was ever on the line. The “Caller ID” read as if there was no call coming in. Lisa tried the auto-redial function on the phone, but it did not work. She then tried another form of auto-redial through the phone company, and it too failed to operate. She eventually called the phone company in search of an answer. They told her that they had no indication of any calls whatsoever coming into that phone line during that period of time. Again, classic poltergeist activity. Lisa was at her wit’s end. PK Activity Follows Barry and Lisa Outside Their Home The next four days were a very short respite where nothing peculiar occurred. But, as all good things come to an end, so did this brief interlude. The next event demonstrated a significant change in the nature of the PK activity, as it ventured beyond their home environment for the first time.
On February 23, while at the Best Buy store in Burbank, California, Lisa was in one of the store’s many aisles searching through the vast array of available DVDs when she suddenly felt a hand stroking her hair from behind. She abruptly turned expecting to see Barry behind her pulling a prank. To her dismay, the aisle was empty with the exception of her, and of course whatever touched her hair. Barry was many aisles away at the time. Lisa began shaking so intensely that Barry had to take her home immediately. Four days later, Barry and Lisa were in the living room about to watch a DVD when they clearly heard a disembodied female voice moving across the room in front of the entertainment center. The “voice,” which was unintelligible, appeared to move from the left wall and exit through the large glass wall where the dog normally slept on his pillow. It is important to note here that the entertainment system was completely off at the time. Another interesting fact to consider is that Barry’s home is up on a hill, and there were no homes within less than 200 yards. What then was the source of the disembodied voice? Moving ahead a little more than two weeks, March 16 again showed the intensity of the force behind these psychokinetic events. At 6:30 a.m., the downstairs hallway door leading to the bathroom and bedroom violently slammed shut. The force was great enough to shake the entire house and awaken Lisa upstairs; Barry said it was like a cannon shot or loud sonic boom. For obvious reasons, Lisa could not go back to sleep after this event. The very next morning at 10:30 a.m., Barry and Lisa were in the kitchen when they both felt a strong, cold wind blow through that part of the house. However, all the doors and windows were closed and the heat was on. Life somewhat calms down for the next three weeks, and Lisa was finally able to relax, praying that these events may have finally ended. To her dismay, On April 3 at 10:30 a.m., Barry walked by one of the dressers in the master bedroom, which still had Christmas lights hanging behind them. Suddenly, the row of multi-colored lights flew off the wall in front of both Lisa and Barry and hit the floor some distance from the dresser. Later that same day, at 4:15 p.m., I was at Barry’s house waiting for them downstairs when I clearly heard what sounded like muffled or garbled female voices in the living room accompanied by an intense feeling of “overpressure.” I walked around the bottom floor of the house, even going so far as to walk around the outside of the house, hoping to find a prosaic explanation for the disembodied voices. I discovered nothing.

Demonology — The Dark Files
My First House Blessing & Exorcism By Bishop Jerry Williams, Eastside Paranormal Society & Demonologist
hen we first began these articles, I promised you the story of my first house blessing/exorcism which got me involved in demonology and exorcisms. First off, let me say that I never truly believed in ghosts, and I wasn’t involved in the paranormal at this time. My story starts in July 2001. I was ministering at our church, New Life Ministry Church, in Cincinnati Ohio. One of our members had walked up to me and asked if I could come to her home and perform a blessing. She claimed that there was something in her home attacking her family. When I heard of this I thought, “Yeah, right,” not giving her the benefit of the doubt. I arranged a meeting with the deacon and other ministers of the church to agree on the blessing. The church felt that the blessing would help the family in the long run. Walking Through Quicksand I remember this as if it was yesterday. I arrived at the member’s home around 7 p.m. ET as I grabbed my Bible, holy water, and ritual rite book. I knocked on the door, and she opened it and welcomed me in. Immediately, I felt a heaviness in the middle of my chest. And as I walked into the home, it was as if I was walking through quicksand. I observed the woman’s husband walking into the living room. He was blind. He explained to me what had happened to his eyesight. Just one week earlier he had no issues with his eyes and he was walking around normally at church. He said that he had seen a red ball of light that had formed into a shadow figure, and the red light appeared as the eyes of a creature. He said that as he looked into the creature’s eyes, he felt as if his eyes were burning out of his skull. He said he began to lose sight directly after looking into the eyes of the creature. We believed the creature was a Demon. The woman’s husband went to the doctor, who diagnosed the
eye problem as “Welders Burn” — where you look into a bright light strong enough to damage the pupils and iris. I figured at this point that maybe I was wrong. Maybe they were not hallucinating at all. The truth was they were being attacked by the demonic. I started the blessing as I walked upstairs to the son’s bedroom. The 18-year-old son was not there at the time of this blessing. As I walked into the room, it was very cold. I began to sweat as if it was 100 degrees in the room, although the temperature felt more like 40 degrees. I prayed the model prayer and began the blessing. I used my Nextel cell phone to record the event for my records. As I started to pray, I felt as if my windpipe was closing off. I asked the spirit to leave in the name Of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. Then I felt my back burn as if someone had placed a hot poker from a stove on my back. I found out later that I had a deep scratch from the demon. The Fight Was On The fight was on, and it knew it. The more intense I got in prayer, the more it wanted to fight back by tricking me with feelings of fear. I started to feel a panic attack begin. I then continued to pray, and as I did six to eight prayers, the demon finally left the building and a sudden
smell of roses flowed throughout the home. Later that night, I took my phone to my friend’s home. They had a fancy stereo system that could enhance the audio recording. Keep in mind I had nothing to do with the paranormal at this time. We began the audio recording as it transposed from my phone to an audio cassette tape. We could hear screams and even heard the demon say, “Get out of here. You will pay. Face to face. He has to pay. Don’t you pray to God.” It even mentioned my wife’s name, Virginia, in a young child’s voice. The scream of the demon was so intense that I get chills thinking of this story every time I tell it. During the blessing I couldn’t hear anything in real time, but I did physically feel the attack of the demon. The audio then confirmed what was going on, and as I continued to listen, I heard the demon ask me in a child’s voice to “please stop” the prayers, as if it was hurting the child. Then it changed its voice to three different male voices. That very next day I woke up to find that my cell phone had melted its circuit board system and the audio was destroyed. But I thank God that I put it on tape the night before it was destroyed. We had the audio taken to eight different churches of different doctrines, and they all agreed that what they heard was demonic.
A Life-Changing Event I then started a class of demonology at NLMC/ Michigan and attended seven years of schooling on demonology and exorcisms. I continue to this day to receive more education on the demonic. I also teach demonology through a school I developed in 2010. I keep the prices low at my school, because I feel it’s not about the money but the education of learning about demons and how to deal with them. I don’t charge for investigations. Investigations are a spiritual battle that have no price. I think if people donate for investigations, that’s fine, but we do not charge and have never charged since I started in 1996. I am a Bishop of my church, New Life Ministries, and I am proud that I have helped many people who asked us for help around the nation. I will continue to fight and investigate the demonic until further notice. I have another minister who has experienced a serious demonic attack, and I will cover it in a future article. Inside the Psychic Mind
Follow Your Gifts By William Becker, Paranormal Insights
e all have our own specialty with psychic experiences or focus, and it’s tied to our eternal beings and what we do between lives as well. And it’s when we are tuned into that which is our true self that we are the most fulfilled, content, and joyful. This is a truth that is becoming more evident as I continue my own journey of self awareness and growth. And part of that truth is that we learn that sometimes we need to let go of those areas of our lives, including activities and behaviors, that keep us from being our complete self and following our true calling, even when we associate those areas as a part of our identity. A Journey of the Soul I’m going to go out on a limb here a bit and use some of my own story as part of the example. Since I was a young child, I’ve had a vision of myself as an old man, living in a house and grounds with people coming to me for wisdom, insight, and healing — spiritual healing. I could see myself as a teacher and healer of the soul in a sense, even before I had an understanding of what it was I was really seeing. I’ve done a lot of different jobs in my life. I have a bachelor’s degree in history and a master’s degree in public administration. I’ve worked retail and run nonprofits, and a good deal in between. All the while having this vision of myself that I considered really to be a pipe dream, an unrealistic and really fantasy-based daydream, not something obtainable. At the same time, the spiritual and inner journey has been a basic and fundamental part of my life journey. It’s taken various forms, roads, and detours through the years, but it’s been a big part of who I am. And over time, the inner journey and the outer one started to meld, to blend together and become one. I think one of the distractions we have from our journey to true self is the very real material needs of living in our society. I know for me, I had to find ways to pay the mortgage and keep the lights on and food on the table. And those
needs would distract me from the real calling in my own soul. Meditation and other self work would allow that calling to surface from time to time, but it was still difficult to truly understand and to find the energy and time to invest in them. Removing the Distractions! So, sometimes when we can’t rid ourselves of the distractions or the path we’re on that might be less than helpful and healthy for us, some power outside of ourselves helps us out — removing the distractions! Now this doesn’t usually take a nice, easy form. It can often mean that something of seeming importance is no longer available to us. It can be the ending of a job, the loss of people we’re close to — for a variety of reasons, the ending of relationships, or if we’re lucky, we recognize what is not working in our lives and voluntarily walk away from it before it collapses around us. My own experience has included combinations of all of the above. Even when we voluntarily make a decision to leave something that is holding us back from being more fully our true self, it’s still painful. There’s still a grieving process. But from that pain rises the sense of freedom that we can either choose to embrace or ignore. I’m choosing to
embrace mine as fully as I can. Our new-found freedom doesn’t give us the excuse to sit back and relax. Quite the contrary; it usually means that we have a lot more work to do! But the freedom can help to energize that work and focus it. Also, as I can attest to personally, embracing that freedom also allows others into our lives that give us so much of the support, inspiration, and practical assistance we need. Going through someone else’s breakup with the old with them can inspire us, as well as support them. I’ve been witnessing this first hand lately.
is a reflection of what we do in between lives, as well as in this life. It is in my case. In my case, I really am to be that healer and teacher I’ve seen myself as all my life. Part of the challenge has been how to support myself in doing so. Well, that’s where the classes, books, and other ideas come in. I’ve been blest to find my own psychic ability. Not for its own sake, but for what I can do with it, working with the living and the dead, and the non-human. In between lives, I work with souls learning about who they are, what their call is, and how to heal. In this life, I work with people, helping them find their own gifts and their own instruction manual to allow those gifts of the soul to blossom and flourish. And I help and work with the entities, if in nothing else but by giving them the respect, friendship, and voice they deserve. I’ve got a long way to go, and as long as we are in this world we never reach the perfection of the vision. But when we recognize what that vision is and how we can best work toward it, we experience life in a whole new way. We really start to wake up and experience the joy of fulfillment and completion.
Life includes a balance of spirituality.
Find Your Own Path, and Embrace It I know that this concept may sound more than a bit unbalanced, to put it nicely, but it isn’t. I’m also not saying that each of us is to be Mother Theresa or Dorothy Day. I’m not suggesting that we all leave the material world behind us. This isn’t an anti-everything rant; this is an encouragement to find your own truth and embrace it. And for most of us, this includes a balance of spirituality, comfort in the material world, and doing that which we are called to do. And I also strongly feel that this calling

Two Haunted French Quarter Hotels By Rick E. Hale, Foundations Psychical Research
elcome to New Orleans, The Crescent City, or The Big Easy, whichever you prefer. Back in 2005, we almost lost this unique and historic city to the rage of Hurricane Katrina, but it rose again back to its historic beauty. New Orleans is regarded by many in the paranormal field as being a place of great supernatural power and is considered to be one of the most haunted cities in the United States of America. So, I offer you two of the most haunted hotels in the legendary French Quarter. Two hotels that give guests a good night’s rest, as well as a good scare. The Hotel Provincial Like the city of New Orleans, the Hotel Provincial holds a long and storied past. Originally used as a convent of the Ursuline Order of Nuns, the building was turned into a hospital for sick and wounded soldiers in 1722. Between 1722 and the 1870s, the building changed hands many times. The original structure was torn down and replaced by two structures. In 1874, the building site that would one day house the Hotel Provincial burned to the ground, tragically killing several people. In 1969, the structure was rebuilt. The family that rehabilitated it turned it into one of New Orleans most lavish hotels, the Hotel Provincial. It was at this time that guests and employees began complaining of encounters with ghosts. It would appear that most of the hauntings at the Hotel Provincial are psychic imprints — residual hauntings by nature. Witnesses have reported seeing the spirits of soldiers covered in blood walking around, moaning and crying in pain — an obvious energy left over from the hotel’s early history as a military hospital. Doctors have been seen attending to their patients, and pools of blood have been found in various areas of the hotel. The spirits of the Hotel Provincial seem to be memories of the hotel’s past. But you never know; one might talk back to a lucky listener.
The Hotel Provincial is said to house the spirits of the past, replaying their tragic lives.
Bourbon Orleans Hotel In the old days of New Orleans, before the emancipation of the slaves, it was considered fashionable by rich, white land owners of Louisiana to take mistresses of mixedrace women. They were not considered property, but they were not considered marrying material either. Such a thing as marrying a mixed-race woman would get you bounced out of what was considered “polite” society at the time. Grand parties were held in New Orleans for these elite men to meet mixed-race women, and the Bourbon Orleans Hotel was one such place. If you were looking for love, this was the place to find it. And, as a result, many spirits are said to still reside here. Like many of the older hotels in New Orleans, the Bourbon Orleans started out as a convent for the Sisters of the Holy Family, the South’s only convent of African American Nuns, and Saint Mary’s Academy. It wasn’t until after the Louisiana Purchase that the convent was turned into a social club for the New Orleans’ male elite.
The spirits of the Bourbon Orleans, unlike the Hotel Provincial, appear to be very much aware of the living, and frequent interaction is common. Some of the most often seen spirits are the apparitions of small children running up and down the hall. The children are well known troublemakers and enjoy playing pranks on guests and employees alike. In the Grand Ballroom on the second floor, a few people have reported witnessing apparitions dancing to soft music. When eyewitnesses enter the ballroom, the music stops and the specters vanish, leaving a cold chill in the room. The spirit of an elderly man is seen in the Great Lobby reading a newspaper and smoking a very smelly cigar. The spirit of a very sad, lonely woman is seen getting on the elevator but never getting off. She is said to be heard sobbing, but no one really knows why. Perhaps she is one of the mixed-race women jilted by her lover. One of the funniest stories that is told about the ghosts of the Bourbon Orleans was apparently about an isolated incident — but one the witness will never forget. One day a workman was making some repairs in a stairwell at the hotel when he let a curse word slip. Before he knew what hit him, he was smacked across the face and left with the feeling that whoever slapped him was

very disappointed in his behavior. Those that work at the Bourbon Orleans believe the man was smacked by one of the pious nuns that once called the hotel home. I have never been to the very haunted city of New Orleans, but if I ever go I will definitely be dividing my time between these two haunted hotels.

Crystals & Herbology: Mystical Etchings From A Medicyn Woman’s Grimoire
Awakening With Ascension Gemstones By Silvermoon Medicyn, www.silvermoonmedicyn.com
s the vibration of our amazing planet continues to encourage the human population to awaken, we find that the stones growing right beneath our feet are evolving right alongside us. Evolution has challenged humans and pushed us to the point that our DNA is changing; frankly, it has been since the beginning of time. The chemical makeup of our soil and Earth’s temperatures are creating a new environment supporting the evolution. This is one possible reason for the increased vibrations in stones. There have been many new gemstones found in the past 10 years, like rare orange-colored Kyanite from Loliondo, Tanzania, discovered in 2007. The 12 Synergy Stones There are 12 synergy stones that have been noted to be the best to support us in the evolution of our soul: Azeztulite, Phenacite, Petalite, Danburite, Herderite, Satyaloka Quartz, Moldavite, Scolecite, Natrolite, Brookite, Tanzanite, and Tibetan Tektite. These stones have been around for a very long time, but now we are beginning to hear the vibrations of these stones. Danburite As the planet shifts and changes, we are finding stone frequencies are changing also. For instance, Danburite, known as the “shaman stone,” is one of the 12 synergy stones that I began my full awakening process with in early 1980. It was one of the earliest gemstones to be noted for its ascension abilities and was known then for calling the souls that sought spiritual mastery. Nowadays, Danburite’s high vibration mainly focuses on soothing the emotional body so you can think things through, opening the flow of energy from the eighth to the fourteenth chakra by connecting us to the

one divine Source. As we awaken with these new higher vibration stones and come in tune with our spiritual process, we open our third eye, giving us a global perspective and a conscious understanding about not taking everything for granted or at face value. This is the basis of the Golden Rule. It is a karmic law lesson that stones are meant to show us. After close study of these stones, you will feel lightening on your emotional body in all aspects of your life (in mind, body, and spirit). These gems grant us the deep ability to clear our minds and learn to not allow things to affect us physically. Each one can assist in healing, teaching personal responsibility, and developing an understanding with the life lessons in self-emotional mastery, selflove, and a compassion for all.
Moldavite Moldavite is known as a spiritual talisman. It has been found embedded in everyday articles that date back to 25,000 years ago. The power of the stone can be felt lightly or overwhelming while holding onto it. It was mainly known for clearing the heart chakra, but today’s vibration works on the deep soul scars and energy blockages that you carry around, increasing your connection with your etheric, astral, and physical body. Be ready to move your spirit if you choose to use this gem. Azeztulite Azeztulite is a recently discovered stone, found in 1970 in the U.S. It is used for opening telepathic windows to the “old primitive brain” known as the hippocampus. Magic & Lore: When The Mystical And Paranormal Blur
Facing Your Own Dark Night of the Soul By Silvermoon Medicyn, www.silvermoonmedicyn.com
ome say only spiritual seekers can go through the dark night of the soul, but every single human is faced with it at least once in a lifetime. We must deal with the dark night of the soul to reach a higher stage of enlightenment. During this time period in our lives, it occurs naturally as our conscious mind opens to who we really are inside. Some of us will deal with this passage more than once depending on how many times it takes us to learn our lifepath lessons. Sadly, some of us never get free. So what is the dark night of the soul? The dark night occurs when you refuse to accept your part in the spiritual growth process while coming to understand who you really are, what you stand for, and your reason for living. You notice it when your situations and challenges seem to occur over and over. Have you ever found yourself asking, “Why does this keep happening to me?” It happens because you refuse to change your patterns of behavior and egotistical thinking. Your personal goals and the universal laws encourage you to become egoless. Each step you take to grow away from the ego, the less resistance you create searching for your spiritual path. This time can be confused with depression since you are very disconnected during the process, often feeling lost and alone. You find yourself in a deep mental and emotional fog, feeling blind and confused as to what your true self really is and what part is ego. You are being forced spiritually to remove your blinders of delusion and tear that layer of false ego away; it is like digging in your skeleton closet and being pushed to throw parts of yourself out that no longer fit. You’re forced out of your comfort zone by external situations that feel so uncomfortable you have no other option than to accept change. Yes, this will be an emotionally painful process, causing you to feel alone, lost, hopeless, heartbroken,
Have you ever found yourself asking, “Why does this keep happening to me?”
angry, and full of self-pity. You will think you’re being punished by the gods for your past actions or facing consequences that you are not sure are yours. This is not true. You may even be choosing to use addictive patterns to soothe the pain, but this only compounds the lessons you must deal with. The dark night of the soul feels like your lowest point emotionally and that there is no way to recover. Some choose suicide during this process, but this too only complicates the soul’s journey. When you finally get the “ah ha” moment, you accept your personal truths and stop comparing yourself to others. You begin to know for certain that change can occur progressively, pushing you to make the changes needed for spiritual growth. I believe that each action we do causes a reaction; this reaction is how we handle the spiritual lesson. They say when you can mentally, emotionally, and physically see the negative traits to your ego, you will want to change and feel the drive to do so permanently.
The harsh part of the lesson is accepting that some things are not worth keeping around or fighting for any longer. The pain and suffering you are feeling is only temporary and contingent on how long you are willing to walk in that discomfort. It is not about being brave or giving in, it is about knowing what your personal truths are. A personal truth is the way we think, believe, and act in regards to human values. What is true for you is not always true for another; that is what makes the healing so hard to grasp, because we think everyone is the same. We are not the same, and each person’s experience is unique to them and what they have agreed to learn this lifetime. You have no choice but to take the dark path. It can only be done by you. It helps as you grow to understand each emotion you feel and why. I know that sounds daunting, but it must be done at your pace. Emotions like pride, jealously, greed, and selfishness are just a few lessons you must learn to master. The sooner you realize that the feelings of trust and personal acceptance are the keys to this transformation, the quicker you can then move into an egoless state far from fear and self-doubt. We all seem to need a reason to stop fighting with ourselves and look for peace within our heart and soul. This means we must be completely honest with ourselves. Lying to yourself only means you are unwilling to accept this process of personal change, and the night of the dark soul will repeat itself. I know this can sound impossible to someone deep into the dark night of the soul, but baby steps will lead you out. Write out every day how you feel (good or bad) and answer why you feel this way to each feeling and if you have control over the feeling. Just by recognizing your feelings you begin to see how patterns in your mind
and emotions are working against you. Remove yourself from toxic people and situations; it may mean your whole world has to start over, but it may be just what you have to do. Learn to trust yourself and your intuition; you cannot trust others until you trust who you are and what you stand for. Embrace your shortcomings and imperfections, and always accept others at the spiritual level they are at. When you do, peace will settle into your soul, creating an understanding of humbleness and willingness to let go of the darkest part of you that is called the ego.

Katie’s Conspiracy Corner
POPULATION CONTROL By Katie Christopher, NEPA Paranormal’s Ghost Detectives
The purpose of this article is to educate readers on the facts behind some of the most popular and controversial paranormal conspiracy theories in existence. There are many things out there being hidden and covered up. But we have a right to know the truth. Each month I will cover a different conspiracy theory — some well known and some a bit more obscure, but all that have compelling evidence supporting the fact that the truth is being hidden by either our own government or a private source. You will be given the details behind each angle of the topic at hand, and in the end, it is for you to decide what you believe. Any questions, concerns, or suggestions are welcome and can be e-mailed to me at KatiesConspiracyCorner@yahoo.com. “Each person we add now disproportionately impacts on the environment and life-support systems of the planet.” –George Bush’s Science Advisor Paul Ehrlich “A program of sterilizing women after their second or third child, despite the relatively greater difficulty of the operation than vasectomy, might be easier to implement than trying to sterilize men.” –Barack Obama’s Science Advisor John P. Holdren “A total population of 250-300 million people, a 95% decline from present levels, would be ideal.” –CNN Founder Ted Turner “If we do a really great job on new vaccines ... we could lower [world population] by 10 or 15 percent.” –Bill Gates 2010
o what exactly is population control? The dictionary defines it as: a policy of attempting to limit the growth in numbers of a population, especially in poor or densely populated parts of the world, by programs of contraception or sterilization. There are over 300 million people in the United States alone, and over 7 billion people populating the world. The World Health Organization (WHO) has
Some believe that means of population control are so extreme that viruses are being genetically engineered specifically to start waning our population.
stated that we are 90% over the ideal population. Population control is becoming more and more prominent as the world’s population increases. It is the belief of many of our leaders that we cannot continue to function on the resources we have with the rate of population increase. There are many leaders who also believe that our problems of hunger, climate issues, and environmental issues all tie into population problems. These may seem like valid statements; however, it is not these beliefs that are the problem. The problem lies in the proposed solutions to these issues. Some solutions, while frightening, have been publicized. There are some individuals, though, that believe our government is utilizing much more chilling methods of population control, and keeping them secret. This article will explore a known and an unknown method of population control.
Planned Parenthood One of the most common forms of population control lies within Planned Parenthood. This organization preaches contraception, sometimes abstinence, and also performs abortions. Planned Parenthood’s mission statement, as reported directly from their Website, is: Planned Parenthood believes in the fundamental right of each individual, throughout the world, to manage his or her fertility, regardless of the individual’s income, marital status, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, national origin, or residence. We believe that respect and value for diversity in all aspects of our organization are essential to our well-being. We believe that reproductive self-determination must be voluntary and preserve the individual’s right to privacy. We further believe that such self-determination will contribute to an enhancement of the quality of life and strong family relationships. Based on these beliefs, and reflecting the diverse communities within which we operate, the mission of Planned Parenthood is: • To provide comprehensive reproductive and complementary healthcare services in settings that preserve and protect the essential privacy and rights of each individual. • To advocate public policies that guarantee these rights and ensure access to such services. • To provide educational programs that enhance understanding of individual and societal implications of human sexuality. • To promote research and the advancement of technology in reproductive healthcare and encourage understanding of their inherent bioethical, behavioral, and social implications. One would think, based on this statement that Planned Parenthood is simply a family planning facility, there to help individuals make the right choices for their future, specifically where their family is concerned. If however, that was the case, then why was Margaret Sanger, founder of Planned Parenthood, quoted as saying, “The most merciful thing that a family does to one of its infant members is to kill it”? Previous employees of Planned Parenthood tell a tale of a different mission statement. That is, use all matters
necessary to reduce overpopulation. This is confirmed in a document existing within the organization since 1969 called the Jaffe Memo. This memo was written when Planned Parenthood was asked by the government for some effective ideas in reducing population. Some of the proposed suggestions I found taken directly from a copy of the memo are: Preach to postpone marriage; alter the idea of the ideal family size; encourage increased homosexuality; fertility control agents in water supplies; modify taxes such as marriage tax, child taxes, extra taxes if more than two children in school, and even take away tax exemptions for parents to help stop people from deciding to have a family; compulsory education of children; compulsory and on-demand abortion and sterilizations; and even payments to encourage sterilization and abortion. This doesn’t sound like family planning to me. Sounds a little more like the only plan on their agenda is to eliminate decisions to have a family. Viruses and Vaccines Some believe that means of population control are so extreme that viruses are being genetically engineered specifically to start waning our population. Then, the resulting vaccines that eventually become mandatory in some aspects add additional numbers to that death toll. These vaccines are even more dangerous than the virus itself, and prove to be more damaging and even more deadly. Take, for instance, the 2009 outbreak of the swine flu. It is interesting that the makeup of the H1N1 virus includes genetic elements from bird flu, swine flu, and human flu, spanning over three continents. The ingredients as reported by the media are: • Human influenza. • Bird flu from North America. • Swine flu from Europe. • Swine flu from Asia. According to www.naturalnews.com, for this make up to happen, “This is rather astonishing to realize, because for this to have been a natural combination of viral fragments, it means an infected bird from North America would have had to infect pigs in Europe, then be re-infected by those some

First Ward School House Investigation By Chuck Gotski, In The Dark Investigations
n May 17, 2013, In The Dark Investigations conducted an overnight investigation of the First Ward School House in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin. In this article, our team shares with you our findings during this investigation. History The First Ward School House was built in 1896 in Wood County, Wisconsin. The site housed kindergarten through the sixth grade, as well as a high school grammar class. In 1902, it was renamed Irving after the author Washington Irving (AKA Diedrich Knickerbocker). Around 1910, the school was closed because of high operating costs. It was later reopened in1921 due to an increase in the number of students in the county, but only for kindergarten through third grade. Before World War II, the building was also used as a school for the deaf. The last year the school ran was 1977. For two years after the school’s closure, it was used for exceptional educational offices and classes. The location was finally closed in 1979, and it stayed vacant until recently when it was purchased by a family for renovation. Paranormal Claims Paranormal activity is said to plague this location, including children laughing, shadow figures, mists, doors closing, singing Old McDonald and then children will sing back, footsteps, and other anomalies. Evidence Gathered During our investigation, we caught multiple EVPs, including the following: • We sang Old McDonald (one of the claims) and then caught child singing • Humming in kindergarten room
The team caught a traveling mist on the second-floor landing, where one of the investigators became ill on three occasions. The building was sealed, no ventilation was on, and no smokers we present.
• Male voice caught on digital recorder and 8mm camera talking in the Kindergarten room • Male voice caught saying “oh no” in second-floor family room • Footsteps caught along with floor creaking while all investigators were stationary (these were heard in real time) • Two screams: one caught of an older woman in distress in the basement during set-up; and then the same female five minutes later two floors up in the family room right before investigator starts to speak as he is setting up a camera.
These are just some of the EVPs that were caught. Other strange occurrences included our tech manager becoming ill on three separate occasions on the second-floor landing. He described it as if someone was reaching inside him an squeezing his heart. And after the third time this happened, he decided to take pictures of the area and captured a mist moving into the landing area and then retreating back. We were told later that several groups had seen the mist, though at In The Dark Investigations includes team members Larry Jednachowski (co-founder/ the time we had no knowledge of tech manager/investigator), Janine Hancock (researcher/investigator in training), this reported activity. Personal Experiences: Tales From The Haunted Heathman Hotel
California Team Investigates the Heathman By Rob St.Helen, West Coast Ghost Hunters
ello and happy Fourth of July to you all! The haunted Heathman has been pretty quiet as of late. During times like this, it makes me think about what causes all the activity to start up at the blink of an eye. And then same token, just stop to the point where we won’t see or hear anything for a few weeks, if not longer. A Team Comes to Visit We recently had a paranormal team stay with us for two days. I walked them around and told them about some of the “hot spots.” Then they ran their investigation. I think they were all pretty new to the paranormal scene, since on the second night they were all very excited about catching orbs. I have to say that I am not an orb fan at all. It has to have color and a tail, motion ... something to really catch my eye, otherwise, yawn. On the second night, I brought some equipment in that I own, including a REM Pod, K-II meter with built in REM Pod, and motion detectors. You should have seen each member of the team light up upon seeing the equipment. They did not have anything like it in their equipment bag and looked to be using voice recorders, some cameras, an EMF meter or two, and a DVR system. Helping Teams on Their Journey I don’t know yet what they got (if anything) from the second night, but they said they would keep me updated. They did tell me they were hitting one more spot north after staying at The Heathman Hotel. They also mentioned that they had stayed at the lighthouse in Florence, Oregon, as well as at another hotel in Washington State. To me, that was a fun night, helping out another

team that was just getting started, giving them pointers, but allowing them to do their own thing and letting them “grow” as a team, and yet having fun on their road trip. Additionally, it sure made my night go by a lot faster than normal, always a plus! I wish I had asked their permission to use their name here, but I didn’t think of it in time, so for now, they are called “Team from California.” I hope everyone has a great and safe Fourth of July. Personal Experiences: Reader Encounters
Do You Believe in Ghosts? By Jena Chisholm
believe everyone has had an experience that they cannot explain. In my case, I did not think anyone would understand. Even though my story can be quite unbelievable, I feel that as long as I know what truly happened, everyone will truly believe that it did happen. I have not told this story to very many people. I thought they would tell me I was lying. Now, I believe in my life experiences, and no one’s negativity toward the subject can change that. ***** It was the summer before my second grade year of school and the weekend of my seventh birthday, June 7, 2000. My cousin, Carly, and my best friend, Andrea, were staying the night at my house for my birthday. Carly and Andrea are both older than me, Andrea by two years and Carly by one year. When people slept over at my house, we slept downstairs in my family room, which is located at the back of my house. The back wall of my house has a glass door along with two windows that are the same size and right beside the door. Outside of the glass door brings you to the deck; in the middle of the deck, there sits a green table with six chairs around it. The family room had two dark green couches. One ran along the wall adjacent to the windows and door; I was sleeping on this couch. The other couch ran transversely from the door. Carly was sleeping on this couch, and Andrea was sleeping on the floor. Now, sleeping downstairs for me was actually very scary. I hated everything about it. It was pitch black down there because my cousin could not sleep with the television on (even though I preferred to), and the refrigerator’s ice machine sounded like there was a monster playing around in the kitchen. If I ever woke up in the middle of the night, there was no way I was taking my head out
from underneath the blanket. Something may be lurking out there for me if I did, but this time was different. ***** I don’t know what time I woke up, because this was back before cable boxes had the time on them, but I woke up nonetheless. It wasn’t a jerk yourself out of sleep sort of wake up, it was the wake up and look around you because you cannot remember where you are sort of wake up. I woke up and did just that, looked around. The first spot my eyes went to was out the window. What I saw out there was a blue, see-through man sitting on our deck table, swinging his legs and waving at me. Everything that was on this man was the same color, sort of like a sky blue color but transparent and somewhat glowing. I could see every detail on this man, everything from the strands of his hair to the plaid shirt that he was wearing. At this point in my life, everything involved with life scared me, but not this guy. I felt extremely calm when looking at him, and I felt like I shouldn’t take my eyes
off of him. If there is one thing that I cannot remember about this memory, it is how it ended. I do not remember him just fading away, so I guess that I must have just fallen back asleep while I was staring at him. Carly and Andrea were the first two people that I told about seeing that man on our deck the night before. We were playing in the creek outside my house the morning after, and I told them what happened after we were finished playing and walking back up the hill to my house. I just flat out said, “I saw a ghost on the deck last night.” Andrea’s response, “I saw that ghost too! He was carrying a knife and walking slowly up the stairs on your deck!” I was baffled by this, I could not believe that she had seen a ghost too, a different ghost, but a ghost all the same. I said “No way! That is cool.” And we just continued from there. I actually looked for that ghost with a knife all the time outside my house, hoping I could see that one too. Until I realized that they were just messing with me because they thought I was making up that I had seen a ghost. ***** The third person that I told about this happening was my mom, and this is where it gets really interesting. My mom and I have always had a really close relationship, so I wasn’t scared at all to tell her. After all, she might know what actually happened and who that man really was on the deck, because I couldn’t possibly have really seen a ghost. I described to my mom in detail what had happened. I described exactly what the man looked like and exactly what he was doing when I saw him. After I finished my story, my mom ran into the dining room and told me to come with her. She opened the drawers that had all of our old pictures in it; she pulled one out and showed it to me. The man that was staring back at me in this picture was the man that I had been staring at sitting on my deck the night before. The man in the picture was my great grandpa, Lawrence Emark, who had died on September 12, 1993, just three months after I was born. The craziest part was that he was wearing the exact same shirt in the picture that he had been wearing the
night before. Of course this time the shirt had color but the same plaid design. He must have done that so I would know that it was him, unless that was just his favorite outfit. It is a little strange to me that my mom knew exactly who the person was that I had seen on the deck, but strange things occur when strange things happen. There was really no skill involved with persuading my mom that I had really seen a man sitting on our deck table that night. I was her seven-year-old daughter describing her grandpa, who I hadn’t seen since I was three months old, in remarkable detail. She later told me that after she had seen my face when I first looked at the picture of my grandpa, there was no way she couldn’t believe. ***** I don’t know why this happened to me, but you can’t ever really know why things happen the way they do. My mom did tell me that whenever I was around my grandpa, I was always reaching out for him and wanting to be in his arms. So maybe he came back one last time to see how his great grand-daughter ended up, since he only knew me for those short three months. You can take my story however you may. If you can believe it, all the power to you; if not, I know that everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Every person in the world believes what they want to believe, but in all reality the person who knows the truth holds the key.
I saw a ghost on the deck last night.

Personal Experiences: Life With The Breathing Impaired
What a Difference Half a Decade Makes ... By Bri Larkin
or those of you who didn’t read Paranormal Underground magazine back “in the day,” let me introduce myself. Hi! I’m Bri Larkin, and I used to write for this fine magazine back when it was just a slobbery, messy little baby. I wrote a column about life in my haunted farmhouse, called Life With the Breathing Impaired. Meeting the people behind the magazine is still in the top five experiences I’ve had online, and I’ve been online since I was 15 years old. They really are wonderful folks. I wouldn’t be talking to them still if I didn’t think so. Truth. Since the last time you heard from me, my life has changed dramatically. I initially had to stop writing for the magazine because we were victims of the Great Recession (cue dramatic music). The growing pains were terrible, and I still have anxiety from that experience. Long story short, we lost pretty much everything, went through foreclosure, and had to settle somewhere else. That somewhere else took us hundreds of miles north from my little haunted farmhouse in the wilds of Missouri. We are now in the Dakotas, and even though it was painful to leave things behind, I couldn’t have asked for a nicer little community to call my home. One door closes, one door opens. ***** I went back to school. I never thought I would be able to do it, but I did. Two weeks before I started, my beloved mother passed away from complications of breast cancer. Anyone who has lost close loved ones can tell you how much it changes you forever. I then lost my sister-in-law to diabetes the following March, and then my father to acute leukemia the following December, only 16 months after my mother left.
Yes, sanity is a precious commodity. Thank goodness I was in school at the time and struggled through. It kept me grounded, and I have no doubt I would have gone even crazier with grief than I already had if it wasn’t for that. I graduated with my bachelor’s degree in human services with double minors in psychology and sociology. There is talk about graduate school but I have bills to pay down, first. Two weeks after I graduated, I found out I was pregnant, only to lose the baby this past March. And yet, I still smile. I still enjoy the sunshine and my little family. I still joke and look forward to another day. I never thought it would be possible in the darkest of my days, when all I could see was pain and suffering stretched out before me. I still have moments where I cry and go crazy, but I know it’s normal. I know what’s not normal. After my mother died, I was given anti-anxiety medication when I shared with my doctor the voices I would hear in my dreams. Just when I was drifting off to oblivion, a voice would yell at me, “She’s dead! She’s gone! Your mother is DEAD!”
I would wake up with my heart pounding and would fear closing my eyes for the rest of the night. That just made things worse. I won’t begin to tell you what I went through and am still going through with the baby’s death. Medications and counseling did me a world of good. The reason why I’m sharing this is because I want to illustrate how resilient we can be. I’m nobody special, but I’m still here, after everything. I never thought I could be this strong. Granted, I still can’t look at the past few years as a whole because I simply can’t process everything that has happened at once. It’s just all too much. I’m pretty sure it’s a defense mechanism to protect myself from raw, choking emotions. What I can do is look at things one layer at a time to try to work through my pain. It truly is one day at a time. Sometimes, it’s one moment at a time. For those of you who are going through something similar, I just want you to know you are not alone. Grief and depression can be so very lonely. Of course, it’s your own pain that you will deal with in your own grieving process, but be gentle with yourself. Love yourself enough to give this process time. If someone tells you that you should “be over” something by now, then they just don’t get it. Or when someone says, “I know exactly how you feel!” ... they don’t. Or my favorite: “It’s God’s will.” (Don’t even get me
started on that one.) Sometimes, people who you thought you were close to won’t say anything at all; just radio silence. That hurts, too. I’ve heard some doozies in the past few years. It’s hard to swallow, smile, and nod at times. However, you have to remember that this is a trauma. Allow yourself some slack. If you feel the need to turn to drugs, including alcohol, get help. Those things will not only compound your problems, but they will work to isolate you from people you need for healing. They will also push away those who may need you, too. And if you feel like hurting yourself (I’ve been there. I understand), please, please get help. We are in a new era of mental health awareness where you will not be shamed or judged for feeling the way you do. Life is rough, and blessed are those who can get through it relatively unscathed. You are not alone. Whether or not it’s easily noticed, we are all connected and you are worth more than you may feel or realize. Promise me you’ll talk to someone, okay? I know this has nothing to do with the paranormal, but I’m happy to write to you, my friends, and to share a bit about what’s been up, what’s been down, and what’s been, well, happening, I guess. There is light after the darkness. And when you are able to open your tired, swollen eyes to the sun, we will dance.
There is light after the darkness.

Religion And The Paranormal
Vodun & the Paranormal By Melinda Stum, M.Div., South Sound Paranormal Research
odun is the traditional African religion, whose name is derived from the god of the West African Yoruba people. The Yoruba people resided in Dahomey during the 18th and 19th centuries, which includes portions of modern-day Togo, Benin, and Nigeria. However, the rooted traditions may extend six thousand years. Vodun and similar faith traditions continue to be practiced in Africa, Haiti, South America, and North America. These traditions are rooted in an inter-dependent relationship with the spiritual world through communication, ritual, and practice. The Human Soul The Vodun tradition embraces the human soul. According to the tradition, this soul is composed of two elements: the gros bon ange and the ti bon ange. The gros bon ange is translated as the big guardian angel. This is the element of the human soul that cannot depart the physical body until the moment of death.
The Loa, which is literally translated as “mystery,” are the Vodun spirits. The ti bon ange is translated as the little guardian angel. This is the element of the human soul that can and does depart from the physical body. The little guardian angel may depart while the body is asleep or during Vodun rituals. The Vodun practitioners are concerned that the little

guardian angel may be threatened, damaged, or captured by evil sorcery during these out-of-body experiences. The Loa and the Inter-Dependent Relationship The Loa, which is literally translated as “mystery,” are the Vodun spirits. The Vodun religion is composed of a vast variety of cultural, religious traditions that honor a slightly different pantheon of Loa. These traditions recognize hundreds of Loa. As previously stated, the Vodun tradition is intertwined with the spiritual world through communication. The Vodun practitioners communicate with the Loa and the senior God through the poteau-milton. The poteau-milton is a pole located in the center of the Vodun temple, referred to as a hounfour or humfort.

Religion And The Paranormal as profoundly evil with narratives of human sacrifice and cannibalism. These narratives captivated the imaginations of the public, instilling fear and misunderstanding, which became inspiration for the Hollywood Horror genre beginning in the 1930s. Contrary to the S. St. John book and Hollywood, the Vodun priests and priestesses (hougans/mambos) confine their activities to “white” magic, bringing forth healing and good fortune. Unfortunately, caplatas or bokors are individuals that engage in activities of evil sorcery or “black” magic, which is referred to as “lefthanded Vodun.” A unique, paranormal aspect of this evil sorcery is the phenomenon of zombies. Zombies are individuals that were revived after burial; however, these individuals are living people that never experienced death. Instead, these individuals were under the influence of harmful drugs administered by an evil sorcerer and remains under their control. The Vodun Doll is perhaps the most recognized, uniquely Vodun phenomenon, which originated and is confined to the American South, specifically New Orleans.
However, the relationship is not confined to this communication. The Loa and the Vodun practitioner are intertwined in a unique, inter-dependent relationship. The Loa must depend upon the practitioners for food and materials. The practitioners depend upon the Loa for health, protection from evil spirits, and good fortune in return. How can humans satisfy the hungry Loa? The Loa are fed and nourished through Vodun ritual. The Vodun practitioners share a communal feast prior to the ceremony. Then the practitioners create a veve, which is a flour/cornmeal pattern on the floor that is unique to the desired Loa. Then the Vodun participants shake purified rattles, beat purified drums, and begin to chant. The hougan (priest), mambo (priestess), and/or hounsis (a Vodun student) begins to dance. Their dancing intensifies until one of the dancers falls to the ground. This fall represents the moment when the little guardian angel departs the physical body and the Loa processes it. The possessed dancer returns to their feet, continues to dance, and may drink the blood of a humanely sacrificed animal. This satisfies the hunger of the Loa. Afterward, the sacrificed animal is prepared and cooked for the consumption of practitioners, their ancestors, and the Loa. Evil Sorcery & Misconceptions The 1884 sensational S. St. John book Haiti or the Black Republic inaccurately depicted the Vodun tradition
The Vodun Doll The Vodun Doll is perhaps the most recognized, uniquely Vodun phenomenon. This phenomenon originated and is confined to the American South, specifically New Orleans. The Hollywood Vodun Doll is often an instrument of evil sorcery. The Vodun Doll is spiritually, or paranormally, attached to an individual, who the practitioner curses with spells and pins.
The Hollywood Vodun Doll is often an instrument of evil sorcery. Contrary to Hollywood, the Vodun practitioners in New Orleans that utilize the Vodun Doll deny these sinister intentions. These Vodun practitioners acknowledge the supernatural, paranormal energy of the Vodun Doll, yet warn the intention should be health, protection from evil spirits, and good fortune. If used for evil sorcery, the consequences may be devastating on the sorcerer. Conclusion Although the Vodun tradition is misrepresented in Hollywood with evil sorcery, the tradition does have an intertwined relationship between the Vodun practitioner and the Loa. This relationship is not simply spiritual, but paranormal in nature through communication and possession.

“Retribution: A Ghost Cat Book” By Michelle M. Pillow, www.MichellePillow.com
omantic suspense and paranormal romance author Jaycee Clark might make plants tremble in fear at the mere mention of her name, but she’s actually one of the sweetest authors I’ve interviewed. Of course, this opinion may be influenced by our mutual love of brownies and the paranormal. Her newest release, Retribution (A Ghost Cat Book), is currently in e-book. ***** Q: In your book, Retribution, you delve into the world of shape-shifting felines, alpha heroes and strong, sexy heroines, and demons. What inspired you to write about this? Jaycee: Once upon a time, author Mandy M. Roth called me and said, “You’re going to write a paranormal book, and it has to have something to do with shifters … cats to be exact.” I said, “OK.” Thus began my foray into the paranormal world the first time. Q: When world-building, did you base your story off of known myths throughout history? Jaycee: Yes and no. I fell in love with the history and legends of the Southwest, especially New Mexico. I had fabulous college professors, and I found myself going back to things I’d learned in class at ENMU. Me, being me, I took a bit of history, sort of squashed with a dash of Taos legends, and what I knew of the area and weaved it with an evil, obsessed villain, who happens to be a desert demon. To be honest, world-building is challenging for me. Small details will freeze me for days sometimes. I love the challenge of thinking out of the box and just going with it,
Jaycee enjoys playing with imaginary people in her head. Sometimes those people are nice, sometimes they’re not, but in the end the girl gets the guy so all is well.
but I need parameters — which is where my New Mexico history and myths, or aspects of myths, came in. Q: What myths or legends inspired you? Jaycee: For this Ghost Cat story and the one before, Revenge, there were Pueblo legends, a bit of Hopi, and a large dash of whatever I wanted, as the protagonist are actually Anasazi, a culture that has always fascinated me as there is so little known about them. Yes, I’m a nerd. Q: Why do you think readers, and society in general, are fascinated by the paranormal? Jaycee: Personally, I think it’s the unknown. There are things that just can’t be explained, or explained easily and consistently enough to become common acceptance. The unknown makes them, well, edgy. So we try to find answers. I, personally, love that there just aren’t answers sometimes. You either accept the voice you heard when no one was there was real or it wasn’t. The belief in what we now call paranormal was once considered religion or just a way of life for many. The afterlife wasn’t really questioned in ancient times, no matter what culture you were a part of. Spirits simply were; communication between the worlds wasn’t weird or fringe. Omens, warnings, creatures that could be good or evil, not really human, not really other, but somehow walked in both worlds. Myths and legends throughout history and cultures attest to this. Now, though, we have cool technology that can measure things in dimensions we can’t always see, but are all too often aware of. And a vast many thinks it’s all hooey. Me, I sort of feel sorry they have a harder time than me thinking out of the box. Just because you can’t see it doesn’t mean it’s not real.
“After seeing enough unexplained things, I’d have to confess my scales tilt more toward believing in the supernatural than not.” Q: What are your favorite paranormal shows, movies, and books? Jaycee: Shows: Haunted. I like Ghost Hunters, but I start making smart-ass remarks. Haunted, though, has honestly scared me before. Okay, and I’ll admit, I did catch up on all the old Buffy shows, as I’d never seen them before.
While writing Retribution, Jaycee was inspired by Pueblo and Hopi legends.
Netflix is a wonderful thing (or an evil tempter). Movie: Poltergeist. I know; it’s old school. Scared me as a kid, but it’s classic and a favorite. Ghosts that overrun not only the home, but the family, their life, their safety. Portals into the afterlife? Yeah, Poltergeist. Alright, and Daughter of Darkness (a miniseries movie from the early 90s). Book: Again, I’d have to go classic: Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Q: Do you believe in the supernatural? Or are you a skeptic? Jaycee: I’m a Libra. I’m both. But after seeing enough unexplained things, I’d have to confess my scales tilt more toward believing in the supernatural than not. Q: Have you ever had a paranormal experience? Jaycee: Well, once I was staying in Galveston in a historic

Author Profile home that had survived the 1900 hurricane. Anyway, I was upstairs reading, ironically enough about sparkling vampires. It was late, and we’d had a busy day. Kids were asleep in the living room downstairs. I heard, plain as day, a loudly whispered, “Mama!” Looked over, and as there had been a nightlight left burning at the bottom of the narrow steps, I saw a little boy’s shadow. One of the rules was the kids didn’t come upstairs, because they were narrow and steep, and there was no railing around the top landing. Again, I heard, “Mama!” I said, “Just a minute. Don’t come upstairs.” Hurried to the top, looked down and nothing. I thought it was my youngest — shadow was about right, voice was right. But upon further investigation, all the kids were zonked out and snoring downstairs in the living room with the living room door shut. I’ll admit that it kind of freaked me out for a minute, and then it made me sad. I thought, What little boy is looking for his mom?
like that, I’d be really happy. I know, that wasn’t really an answer was it? Q: How would you react if you came face to face with a vampire? Jaycee: I’m thinking I wouldn’t scream as badly as I did when I realized the scorpion was no longer on the wall. Might depend on my mood, or if I was in deadline-hell. Let’s face it, Dracula could be reading poetry to me, or singing Beatles tunes in Underoos, offering to clean my house, but if I’m crunched for deadlines I wouldn’t notice.
“I’ll admit that it kind of freaked me out for a minute, and then it made me sad.”
Q: What kind of paranormal creatures do you wish you could meet? Jaycee: That’s hard. A ghost? Then who? And isn’t it sad they haven’t moved on? A shifter, or werewolf. They are said to be hot. But, a vampire. I think it’s the traditionalist in me. Or the fact I loved reading Dracula too many times as a teen. I think it’s the mystery. Plus wicked cool eyes, well, blue or purple ones. Red ones might be a bit creepy. And if he sparkled, I’d be soooo disappointed. Q: If given the chance, would you become a vampire/werewolf/shifter/alien test subject? Jaycee: Can’t there be like a service that lets you choose a package? What would you like to be for a week, diets included (let’s face it, I really don’t want to go run down little bunny foo-foo). You could choose a different package, and me, being me, I’d want the super deal, ya know? I get to be all of them for a day, though I’d add a ghost. Walking through walls might be cool. And then after my five day stint, I could tell you which would be the best. Vampire would be the best I think, and shifters would have to … no thank you. Alien test subject? Can I have the Highlanders please, because if my aliens looked
Q: What does the future hold for you? Jaycee: Well, right now Paige, my current heroine, is in New Orleans trying to decide if she wants the old medicated fog so she doesn’t see or hear the ghosts, or if she believes in herself as much as the hero does. She might want to listen to the Voodoo priestess too. Paige is kind of stubborn. This is part of the Magical Temptations anthology I’m a part of with Mandy M. Roth (remember I mentioned her bossy phone calls?), Michelle M. Pillow (sound familiar?), Jax Cassidy, and Melissa Schroeder. Q: Have you ever been to a psychic and/or a past life regression? Jaycee: Had my palm read at the Renaissance Festival. Yes, I go, drag the kids too. Lots of fun, but I wish they could have been more specific — that was one of my skeptical experiences. A real psychic … no. Past-life regression, I’ve had too many dreams or nightmares. I don’t want to find out they might have been true. Q: Have you ever been abducted by aliens? Jaycee: Not unless they looked like hunky Highlanders complete with kilts and brogues and … no, that was probably just a dream, huh? Darn. *****

Paranormal Perspective: Guest Editorial
Questions Surrounding EVP Evidence Collection By Rick E. Hale, Foundations Psychical Research
n 1959, Swedish artist and film producer Friedrich Jürgenson, while on vacation in Norway, decided to indulge in one of his favorite hobbies, making recordings of bird songs. It was something he did often, but this time something was different and very, very strange. Upon playback he could hear two very distinct voices. Two voices that should not have been there. The voices on the tape were from dead people. Jürgenson claimed that he could hear the voice of his deceased father whispering to him and the voice of his dead wife calling his name. Unsure of what he was hearing, Jürgenson rushed the tape to his good friend, Konstantin Raudive, a Latvian psychologist teaching at Uppsala University in Sweden. Over time the two men made over 100,000 sound recordings of what clearly sounded like, in Raudive’s opinion, the voices of the dead. The rest is history, and Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP) was born. Mysteries Surrounding EVP When it comes to investigating reports of the breathing impaired, I like to focus on EVPs. Say what you want to say about pictures or videos of spirits, but to me hearing that one still, small voice on a voice recorder that doesn’t belong to anyone else present is where it’s at. With that said there are three things that really bother me when it comes to EVPs, and it
bothers a few other researchers as well. How can something that doesn’t possess the necessary hardware produce a voice? You need lungs and a voice box for that. Two, how is it that a 500-year-old Chinese entity can leave a response to a question asked in perfect English when there is no possible way that said entity would be familiar with the English language? And lastly, what the hell is with that whisper? Just giving you fair warning; I’m about to get metaphysical and philosophical here, and that’s because these three questions have no definitive answers. Only theories here. So let’s get this party started with that damn whisper. Communicating Across a Great Chasm Imagine you and a buddy get separated while checking out the Grand Canyon. You are on one side of our greatest of natural treasures, and your buddy is on the other side of the great chasm. You’re thirsty so you yell out, “Hey let’s go get us a beer.” Your friend is in the other side, and what you yell across the chasm comes to him in a whisper. And he may hear, “Hey, let’s go beat up a deer.” You’re thirsty and he wants to beat up Bambi all because of a whisper. Such is the case with the whisper that you catch on a voice recorder. Some theorize that spirits are speaking across a great chasm of consciousness. While doing your EVP session, a spirit might be standing right beside you screaming his responses directly into your ear, but due to this chasm it comes across as a whisper. Sometimes, though, that chasm isn’t as far apart
Some theorize that spirits can tap into a mystical energy source. and the voice may come across perfectly clear, as if you were listening to someone standing right next to you. How Can Ghosts Communicate Without a Voice? The second most vexing conundrum pertaining to EVP is how someone who is clearly dead and lacking the necessary hardware to produce sounds able to speak. Some theorize that spirits operating on the Ethereal Plane are able to tap into this mystical energy source that exists just above reality as we know it. This could also very well explain how spirits are able to manifest at all. But again, this is theory with no hard scientific data to back it up.
Breaking the Language Barrier And lastly, the EVP enigma that always had me scratching my head in consternation. The seeming breakdown of the language barrier. Say you’re watching Ghost Hunters International (believe it or not I actually liked this show), and while investigating a 1,000-year-old Latvian Castle they get perfect English responses to their perfect English questions. You may find yourself thinking that shenanigans are afoot; however, there is a theory that may answer this question. In 480 BCE, Pre-Socratic Greek philosopher and well-known party animal Anaxagoras was the first to theorize that there was a great universal mind that any human could tap into and essentially become one with the universe. However, it wasn’t until 1807 CE that this ancient theory would take shape. In 1807, Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel a German philosopher, released his sizzling hot bestseller, Phenomenology of the Mind. The philosopher stated that the universal mind is all around us and anyone can access this mind at anytime. Language and intelligence level is no longer a barrier. If you think this sounds like the Force, you are correct. George Lucas borrowed heavily from it. Since with this universal mind language is no longer a barrier, then non-corporeal entities might be able to access this universal mind a hell of a lot easier than us living meat bags. If this is the case, this would explain why a 1,000-year-old Latvian spirit is able to tell you to get the hell outta here in a language you understand. Rather than their native tongue, language is rendered transcendent. As I have stated a couple of times already, these are merely theories to make a vain attempt to explain a great mystery. And if you’re honest with yourself and with others, that really is all we have: theories.

Paranormal Activity: Event Spotlight
Tri-County Para-Fest 2013 By Jenny Gurney, Proximity Paranormal
ri-County Para-Fest took place on April 27 in the small city of Fostoria at the Nest in Ohio. Fostoria Paranormal was the group that hosted this event, and they did an amazing job doing so. The honorary guests who attended this event were: Scotty Rorek, John Kachuba, Jim O’Rear, Rosalyn Bown, Deb Lantz, Keith Age, Rick Hayes, Jenny Gurney, and Chris Davis. Paravizionz, Ohio State Reformatory, and many other paranormal investigative teams took part in this amazing event. Sadly, Joe Couto, Kale Kelly, Michael Carroll, and Nick Lantz were not able to attend this event, but were missed greatly. All the speakers conducted lectures throughout the two-day event, and meet and greets and investigations were also held. Keith Age did a lecture about some of the evidence gathered at Waverly Hills throughout the years. Jenny and Chris lectured about the First Ward School House. Rick Hayes held a special lecture that he hadn’t done to date, featuring a new video about lost loved ones. Scotty Rorek and Deb Lantz held a session about being psychic. They also did a mini gallery reading. All the lectures were amazing in different ways. Everyone learned something by the time they walked out of the doors where the lectures were held. Throughout the day there were meet and greets and vendor tables for the guests to talk with the speakers and have their questions answered. Ohio State Reformatory brought with them a “museum,” which was really neat because you got to hold some of the things they have found when in the prison. Scotty Rorek sold his jewelry. Vendors offered their jewelry, crafts, photography, books, films, and paranormal equipment. There are rumors there will be another event next year in Ohio. Keep an eye out on the Tri-County ParaFest Facebook page for updates on future events.
