hat really happened on December 21, 2012? We weren’t burnt up in a super sun flare or flooded out by giant tidal waves. We weren’t raptured, and we didn’t see a spiritual shift. And the world certainly didn’t end. Did the world change at all on December 21? I still scratch my head in wonder, because even though “predicted” doomsdays have come and gone countless times, society still seems to have a fascination with such predictions, as if we didn’t already know the outcome. It seems the human race has a disposition for its own demise, a demise that has yet to take us. It didn’t come with a flash, or even a bang; December 21st just kind of snuck up and then was gone. No rapture took place or enlightenment of the human populace. I was half hoping that something would happen. Maybe a world-shattering event that would have required humanity to work together ... you know, gather together some crystal skulls or something. But come Friday morning when I woke, I was still here, the world was still turning, and Santa was just a few days away. Nope, December 21 did not signal anything for me, just a sleepless night as I kept waking to check my phone, waiting for the magic hour and time to arrive. Three eleven a.m. came and went, and I was still here. I half thought we might just fade away as God awoke from his dream.
Chad Wilson, Publisher
You see, I was really hoping that instead of a doomsday, December 21st would signal a change for the better, a spiritual enlightenment, anything to make the world a better place. I’m still waiting ... and hoping. I wonder when the next doomsday will be predicted and if things will change the next time? Let’s take a look at a few future end-of-the-world predictions and what we have to look forward to: May 19, 2013: Ronald Weinland revised his prediction of Jesus Christ’s return after he incorrectly predicted the same thing for 2011 and 2012. 2020: Psychic Jeane Dixon said Armageddon would take place in 2020 and Jesus would return to take out the unholy Trinity — the Antichrist, Satan, and the False prophet between 2020 and 2037. And even more predictions for the end of the world have been predicted for 2021, 2129, and beyond. I’m betting we’ll still be around for quite awhile ...

Man Orders ‘Hit’ on Psychic Mediums
Investigator Photographs ‘Lady in White’ on Queen Mary
n December 2012, a man from Towanda, Pennsylvania, named Craven Vaughn, ordered a “hit” on three psychic mediums, according to a report on http://thetimestribune.com. The man didn’t know it at the time, but he was actually talking with an undercover state trooper. Vaughn allegedly gave the undercover officer $3,000 and the names of three psychics he wanted “eliminated.” [Paranormal Underground will not release the names of the intended victims.] The 32-year-old man was willing to pay up to $10,000 per hit. According to the online report, Vaughn did not want to reveal why he wanted the three mediums dead. After soliciting murder, Vaughn was arrested and taken into custody on three counts each of criminal solicitation of criminal homicide, criminal attempt to commit criminal homicide, and criminal use of a communication facility. The police were originally tipped off to the devious plan two weeks earlier after an unidentified source told authorities about Vaughn’s intentions. According to http://thetimes-tribune.com, Vaughn told the source, “I’d like to get this done. Soon as I could.”
ccording to a recent Examiner.com article, paranormal investigator and sensitive Valentina Marie Lomborg (AKA “Ghost Girl”) captured this photo on the Queen Mary in Long Beach, CA, as she randomly shot pictures in the hallways. “I just suddenly felt I needed to take a photo,” according to Valentina, as posted on her Website, www.valentinaghostgirl.com. “When I got home I couldn’t believe what I had captured ... the ever-elusive Lady in White, one of the most famous ghosts on the Queen Mary, and in such detail.” If you look toward the end of the hallway, According to Valentina, the photo is the “Lady in White” can be spotted. NASA Deluged With Phone Calls Prior to ‘Doomsday’
s December 21, 2012 neared, NASA received hundreds of phone calls and e-mails each day from concerned citizens who feared the end of the world, thanks to myths surrounding the end of the Maya calendar. According to a Los Angeles Times report, the questions NASA received ranged from, “Will a rogue planet crash into Earth? Is the sun going to Leading up to “doomsday,” NASA received calls and e-mails from 200 to 300 people per day who asked explode? Will there be three days of about the end of the world. darkness?” To handle the chaos, a NASA spokesman told the Times they were doing “everything in our power” to set the record straight. According to a NASA Webpage (http://www.nasa.gov/topics/earth/features/2012.html) set up to answer questions about the possible end of the world in 2012, “Our planet has been getting along just fine for more than 4 billion years, and credible scientists worldwide know of no threat associated with 2012.
Russia’s Prime Minister Makes Comments About UFOs

fter a recent interview with five Russian TV stations, Russia Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev made a few strange comments about UFOs not realizing the cameras were still rolling. One of the journalists asked whether the Russian president is given secret files on aliens when receiving a briefcase necessary to Russia Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev jokes (or not) about UFOs and extraterrestrials visiting Earth. activate Russia’s nuclear arsenal. “Along with the briefcase with nuclear codes, the president of the country is given a special ‘top secret’ folder,” Medvedev said, as quoted by The Telegraph. “This folder in its entirety contains information about aliens who visited our planet.” Whether he was joking or not remains to be seen. But he went on to say, “Along with this, you are given a report of the absolutely secret special service that exercises control over aliens on the territory of our country ... I will not tell you how many of them are among us because it may cause panic,” he says.

esidents of a tiny Serbian village, called Zorazje, believe that a vampire known as Sava Savanovic is on the loose in the mountains of Western Serbia. According to an ABC News article, villagers in the area believe that the vampire is on the move because his home, a former water mill, collapsed. “People are very worried. Everybody knows the legend of this vampire and the thought that he is now homeless and looking for somewhere else and possibly other victims is terrifying people,” said Miodrag Vujetic, local municipal assembly member, as quoted by ABC News. “We are all frightened.” Villagers are reportedly taking precautions by placing holy crosses and icons above entrances to their homes, rubbing their hands with garlic, and keeping a hawthorn stake or thorn on hand. The article further quoted Vujetic as saying, “I understand that people who live elsewhere in Serbia are laughing at our fears, but here most people have no doubt that vampires exist.” According to the area’s local folklore, vampires are hideous, blood-thirsty creatures that can shape shift.
The Paranormal Top 10 List
We’re Still Here:
Top 10 Apocalyptic Predictions We’ve Avoided in the New Millennium By Karen Frazier, South Sound Paranormal Research & Paranormal Underground Radio
eople have been predicting the end of times since the beginning of time — yet humanity is still ticking. It seems we’ve dodged bullet after bullet if all of the doomsdayers are to be believed. Here are 10 apocalyptic near-misses. 10. Y2K — January 1, 2000 I know — it seems so ... 1999. But those of us of a certain age clearly recall the panic preceding the end of the world in 2000. While many took Prince’s advice to “party like it’s 1999,” others began filling their end of the world bunkers with bottled water, Twinkies, and other non-perishables to sustain them after the apocalypse. Still, as people counted down to a new millennium and others anxiously awaited planes to fall from the sky, Y2K was just another moment in history where nothing of note happened except the turning of a calendar page. 9. Aleph — October 30 to November 29, 2003 Expecting a nuclear war between October 30 and November 29, 2003, the Japanese cult Aleph (also known as Aum Shinrikyo) described a United States-generated Third World War and nuclear Armageddon that would take out humanity in spectacular style. Only a chosen few would remain to join the group in
spreading salvation. The American imperialists managed to keep it in their pants, however, and no nuclear devastation occurred. 8. 666 — June 6, 2006 Holy crap! It’s the mark of The Beast. Several groups of fundamentalist Christians believed June 6, 2006, would usher in the rise of the Antichrist, who would be unable to resist the pull of such a numerologically significant day. Turns out the Antichrist doesn’t much care about dates, after all (unless that was the day of his or her birth ... we may know more in about 12 years). 7. Pat Robertson — April 29, 2007 Proving he was just as bat crap crazy in the ’90s as he remains today, Pat Robertson predicted in his 1990 book that the world would end on April 29, 2007. It obviously didn’t, because Robertson regularly appears on television displaying his own special brand of nuttiness for all to see. 6. Large Hadron Collider — September 10, 2008 Remember a few years ago when people believed CERN’s Large Hadron Collider was going to rip the fabric of space-time apart? Initial tests managed to send a particle around the
Collider, but by the 19th of the month, the collider was damaged and in need of serious repair before it could resume operation. 5. Large Hadron Collider (again) — March 30, 2010 Not satisfied we’d dodged a bullet back in 2008, people predicted once again that the LHC would tear apart the universe when it reached maximum energy. It didn’t. Big surprise. 4. Comet Elenin — August Through October 2011 While it wasn’t exactly going to crash into Earth, many believed the Comet Elenin would cause apocalyptic disruption when it traveled between the Earth and Sun, triggering quakes, tidal waves, and other natural disasters that spelled the end of humanity. Scientists protested. Turns out they were right. 3. Harold Camping — May 21, 2011 Speaking of bat crap crazy, apocalyptic preacher Harold Camping told followers the Rapture was coming on this day in 2011. Listeners to his Family Radio ministry believed his calculations, which he based on a formula that was just as crazy as he was. All day, I watched for empty shoes and abandoned cars, but sadly there was no Rapture. Camping and his followers were stunned.
2. Harold Camping (again) — October 21, 2011 After some self-imposed isolation and what appeared to be genuine shock, Camping doubled down and said he’d calculated incorrectly. He named the date of the new Rapture as October 21, 2011, saying his original prediction was actually a day of “spiritual judgment.” Following another day with no empty sets of clothing lying on the ground with vapor trails around them, Camping changed his story again. This time he said no mortal could possibly know when the end was coming. So there’s that. 1. The Mayans — December 21, 2012 This is the one I think a lot of people actually believed. All of it started with the ending of the 5125-yearlong cycle of the Mesoamerican Long-Count Calendar. Clearly, if a 5125-year-long cycle calendar was ending, it could only mean that aliens or asteroids were bent on destroying earth on this day. While some thought the apocalypse was nigh, others believed that spiritual vibrations would rise and December 21, 2012, would usher in a new age of spirituality. Thus far, no evidence exists of either, but I’m writing this at 7 a.m. on December 21, 2012, in order to meet a deadline. I’ll let you know if that changes. Or not. If it doesn’t, stick around for next month’s The Paranormal Top 10 List: The Top 10 Cryptids I Just Made Up Right Now. It’s not to be missed (unless the earth is a smoking ruins).

“207: A Personal Account of Love, Paranormal Phenomenon and Demonic Possession” Book by Jill Marie Morris
Review by Cheryl Knight
he book 207: A Personal Account of Love, Paranormal Phenomenon, and Demonic Possession documents the true and terrifying events experienced in the late 80s by Jill Marie Morris and her husband Jim. The contents of 207 delve into all aspects of the paranormal, including spirituality, psychic abilities, ghosts, demonology, demonic possession, and suicide. The book is an emotional, startling, and unforgettable journey through love, despair, tragedy, and renewed faith and spirituality. 207 primarily details the events that unfolded after Jill and Jim took residence in a large flat within an old home in Watervliet, New York. Almost five months pregnant when the couple moved in during 1988, Jill’s psychic abilities immediately kicked into gear as she began to sense extremely unsettling feelings about the flat and property surrounding it. Soon enough, strange events begin to stir on 207 19th Street. Phantom Odors, Poltergeist Activity, Physical Attacks, and Demonic Possession Shortly after moving into 207, Jill and her family and friends began witnessing paranormal activity, as well as disturbing behavior in Jill’s husband, Jim. As time passed, both the drastic personality changes in Jim and the negative paranormal activity within the home escalated, eventually culminating in a tragic event. On a warm summer night in June 1989, Jill’s mother saved Jill and her eight-month-old son from being shot to
death during a murder-suicide plot. After waiting almost twenty-three years to tell her harrowing true story, Jill shares her personal struggles and tragedies in 207, providing insight and inspiration to readers around the world. Amazon Reviews of 207 • “Even if you are a non-believer, this book is an excellent read and will keep you on the edge of your seat.” • “The story ... is a riveting and suspenseful story of a young family, ripped apart by demonic oppression and possession. ” • “A terrifying and highly emotional account of a young woman’s struggle to hold together a loving family targeted by demonic forces. This book is well written, engaging, and will keep you turning pages into the wee hours!” The Story Continues ... In May 2011, more than 23 years after Jill’s terrifying experiences in 207, she reached out to the employees of the commercial property that now sits closest to 207’s lot. Jill quickly learned that the store had been experiencing paranormal activity for years — no one working at the store knew about the property’s dark history. Jill discovered new information that sheds light on the probable cause of the area’s paranormal activity, dating back over 300 years. Jill is currently authoring a sequel to 207, called Saints, Sinners, and Sacred Ground. Look for Jill’s follow-up book in late winter 2013.

A Review of the Mel Meter By Jack Kenna, S.P.I.R.I.T.S. of New England
This month I want to review a popular piece of equipment designed specifically for the paranormal investigator, the Mel Meter, designed by Gary Galka, president of DAS Distribution. Gary also developed the very useful RT-EVP digital audio recorder. If you are new to the field and want to find out more about Gary, you can find out more about him by doing a Google search for “Gary Galka.” Now let’s get started with this review. The Mel Meter has come a long way since its first incarnation, the Mel Meter 8704. The 8704 was, and still is, a great development for assisting the paranormal investigator. It combines an EMF meter with an ambient temperature gauge, and a followup revision even includes a built in flashlight, which is the model I personally own. The back-lit digital read-out screen is also a great help for us investigators who are almost always working in the dark. The best thing about this device is that it combines multiple pieces of equipment into one compact device, at a price that is much less expensive than having to buy an EMF meter, temperature gauge, and flashlight separately. It not only saves us having to purchase multiple pieces of equipment, but also helps us save a lot of money on batteries. The single 9-volt battery it takes is also a great design choice given the multiple functions of the device, providing plenty of power and long life. The additional functions provided within it make the Mel Meter a great electronic device for not only paranor-
mal research but also for electricians, scientists, and engineers. These added functions include the “Record” function, which allows users to record and review the max and min EMF and temperatures measured by the device, the ability to turn the backlight on and off to either extend the battery life or just go completely dark in a location, and the ability to change the “range” of the EMF read out or change the “Units” that the EMF is read in (mGauss or uTesla). New Mel Meter Models Offer Innovative Features As I stated earlier, the Mel Meter has come a long way since it was first introduced, and multiple models are now available. These newer models now include various additional functions, such as an integrated K-II, Extremely Low Frequency (ELF) EM field range down to 30Hz (this is a great addition as it allows for electromagnetic measurements in the lower bandwidth of 30Hz up to 50Hz, which other standard EMF detectors and K-II units do not provide), “Glow Buttons” that allow the investigator to see the buttons on the device in the dark, Natural Field Detection to identify natural EMF, an EMF Radiating Antenna, Hot and Cold Spot Alarm, and much more. One of the newest models, the Mel-8704RSB7 even incorporates the SB7 Spirit Box. All of the model variations, as well as the original Mel-8704, provide the paranormal investigator with a wide variety of equipment functions, compacted into one easy-to-carry and easy-to-use device. This device
was definitely designed for the paranormal investigator, but it’s important to remember that this device, as well as all other devices currently being used for paranormal research, is NOT designed to find or identify ghosts. However, the Mel Meter is designed to identify electromagnetic fields and ambient temperature changes, which are two of the variables that are at the core of current scientific paranormal research and investigation. Again, the Mel Meter provides a great advantage over the other current off-the-shelf EMF meters and temperature gauges that are also popular with paranormal investigators, as it provides great functionality for working in the dark. It is this combination of functions provided into one, reasonably priced device that makes the Mel Meter a great piece of equipment for the paranormal investigator, and it’s well worth the financial investment, which ranges from approximately $110 for the standard Mel-8704R EMF up to $350 for the Mel-8704RSB7 Spirit Box model.
the Mel-8704R-ProNavigator EMF. Both of these provide the great combination of EMF detector and ambient temperature measurement along with a flashlight and other functions, at a very reasonable cost (approximately $110 to $125). If you’re a seasoned or serious investigator, I would recommend any one of the upper end models, such as the Mel-8704RKII Hybrid up to the Mel-8704RSB7 Spirit Box model. You can get some great detailed information on all of these Mel Meter variations at DAS Distributions’ Website at www.dasdistribution.com products or www. pro-measure.com. Paranormal World Explorer By Jenny Gurney, Proximity Paranormal
arry Fitzgerald has investigated the paranormal for more than two decades. He has also visited locations across the globe as a cast member of the Syfy channel’s Ghost Hunters International (GHI). Barry is a freelance photographer, script writer, and author. His book titles include The Complete Approach: The Scientific and Metaphysical Guide to the Paranormal, The Influence, and My Home Is Haunted ... Now What? Barry recently released his latest book, In the Mist of Gods, which explores the enigma of the fairy and the old gods and looks at their metamorphosis into the alien phenomena. Lately, he has been working in various films, such as Southwest, also starring Paul Bradford and Scott Tepperman. Barry recently talked with us about his interest in the paranormal, his experiences, and his plans for the future. ***** Q: Tell us about yourself (hobbies, work, etc.). Barry: I’m an explorer of many things supernatural. I force myself forward into the field to learn more, rather than sit on a chair and shout “humbug” at everything. I learn for myself. I love photography; I’m an author, script writer, and dog owner. Q: What prompted you to begin investigating? Barry: I think it was a combination of curiosity and spiritual guidance that led me down this path. My first paranormal experience was when I was five years old. It was Christmas Eve, and I was supposed to be asleep. But I heard something downstairs; I thought it was Santa, so I started out to go downstairs when much to my surprise I was met by an apparition of a man that definitely was not Santa. I went back to bed shaken, but in the morning the presents from Santa were there. I have been interested in the field of the paranormal ever since.
Barry Fitzgerald has conducted investigations around the world as a member of the Ghost Hunters International team.
Q: What case will you remember the most and why — on GHI or otherwise? Barry: The Mayan ruins in Belize. Following the investigation I went back and climbed to the top of the temple. This temple was as high as the jungle canopy. As I lay on my back on the top of the temple looking up at the stars, the moon rose over the jungle canopy. It was an amazing experience. Q: What are the differences between investigation techniques in Ireland versus the U.S.? Barry: We listen more to our intuition rather than get distracted with equipment. Q: Describe some of the scarier moments you’ve had while investigating for GHI.
Q: Can you tell us about the difference between nature spirits & elementals and the “usual ghosts”? Barry: Nature spirits were never alive in the sense that we know as being alive, and this is the main feature difference in humans and nature spirits. However, the nature spirit/ elemental has the ability to manipulate environmental patterns around us or in a localized area, which can be troublesome and sometimes fatal. The processes used are too big for us to turn around, unlike those used by a negative entity that can be easily slapped back into place. We can simply acknowledge it and get the hell out. Q: Have you ever encountered a nature spirit or elemental? The GHI team: (back row: l-r) Paul Bradford, Britt Griffith, Joe Chin, and Barry Fitzgerald; (front row: l-r) Susan Slaughter and Kris Williams. (Photo by Ailk Keplicz)
Barry: Nearly losing my head in Jamaica, witnessing an exorcism in Brazil, severe turbulence in midair over the Atlantic, landing in Tasmania, sand boarding down a live Volcano, canoeing with a whale beside me in New Zealand, paying police off in Latvia. Q: Do you do anything before an investigation to prepare yourself? Barry: I would advise people do this; however, in my experience in order for me to get a true understanding of the paranormal, I had to leave myself open and experience what others were. This allowed me to build an understanding of the phenomenon and of course come up with a solution. If I asked for protection then I was robbing myself from part of the phenomenon and therefore could not offer a good solution. Q: What are your favorite paranormal shows, books, movies, etc.? Barry: I like watching Paranormal Witness; it’s the only paranormal show I make time for. I like reading books on topics such as foraging, medical herbology, Celtic lore, and myths. I watch Syfy a lot, for instance Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, the new one. I’m not so keen on horror movies. I also from time to time watch war movies. I was highly intrigued by Downfall. I watch huge amounts of documentaries rather than movies about topics like food, pharmaceuticals, animal welfare, ancient civilizations, UFOs, and cryptozoology.
Barry: Ha ha, yes, many times. But many don’t interact with us, as they couldn’t care less if we are alive or dead. On occasions, if you know where to look and at what times, it can happen. It is a truly amazing experience and at times can frighten the Hell out of you, but what an experience. Q: What would our readers be surprised to find out about you? Barry: How far I will go to get to the bottom of case. Q: Where do you see the paranormal field in five years? 10 years? Barry: It will survive but will be very different than what we see now. Q: Your plans for the future? Barry: I have a new book in the pipeline about the Celtic Banshee, the teller of death. And I’m working on other filming projects that are amazing. I’m very stoked about them ... mystery, intrigue, and getting to the bottom of things. I really look forward to them. I have several new lectures also coming out in 2013 that take people back to an older period to examine protocol and safety when communicating with various entities and deities from the Celtic lore, as well as examining various different types of healing, energy work, and uses of plants and their healing properties. Q: Tell us one thing that many people do not know about you. Barry: I love getting my back scratched. *****

Both Joomla and WordPress are slightly more complicated to use, but as a result also tend to have more capabilities than the more basic Website designers. Website Design If I could communicate just one thought about Website design, it would be this: Keep it simple. In Website design, less truly is more. Of course, I tend to favor simple, clean design, but there’s a reason for that. A simple design with clean lines and minimal distractions allows visitors to focus on what’s really important about your Website — content. There are a number of things I’ve observed about Website design, particularly as it relates to paranormal teams, that distracts from the message you are trying to convey. Website Design Tips It’s not necessary to cram everything on the front page. I’ve visited many paranormal Websites where I’m scrolling, scrolling, scrolling and I still haven’t made it to
the bottom of the page. While it’s okay to allow for a little bit of scrolling, your front page is really just an introduction to your site that invites visitors to click on links and navigate throughout the Website. Less is more. Did I say that before? I’ll say it again! Less is more. The more you try to cram onto a page, the more distracting it is for visitors. In fact, some Web pages are so distracting the visitor immediately clicks away from it just to escape the madness. Have you ever visited a page that is a visual cacophony? Those pages typically have things like an overly busy page background, scrolling marquees, flashing fonts, massive amounts of bright colors, animated GIFs, and all sorts of other distracting things. While the intention with these types of things is to say, “Look here! This is important!” the result is incredibly distracting to visitors. When everything says, “Look here,” you don’t focus anywhere. In other words, when everything claims to be important, then nothing is important. If you find yourself falling prey to seizure-inducing visual effects on your team’s Website, I’d like to suggest that you step slowly away from the animator. A far better strategy is to create carefully organized information ar-

Special Report ranged in a clean layout that draws the eye down the page and invites the visitor to keep reading. You’ll also want to turn off anything that autoplays when someone clicks onto your Website. Many visitors find autoplaying audio and video annoying. You can make the audio or video available, but let the visitors decide whether they want to play it. Be consistent. The best looking and best branded Websites are consistent throughout. • Design a header (I use our team’s logo — you can take a look at www.sspri.org — which was designed on Yola by the way) that matches the look and feel of your team, and use it on every page. • If you use a footer, keep it consistent on every page. • Choose three or four font colors at the most, and use them consistently. On our site we have one color for headings, one for body text, one for links, and one for followed links. • Choose two fonts — one for headers, and one for body text.
Content is more than just the words you use on your site. It’s also the images, videos, and anything else you provide your visitors. In order to keep visitors on your site and hearing your message, your content must: • Answer visitor questions. Ask yourself this: What would I want to know if I came to this site? • Be interesting. • Be well written. Grammar, usage, and spelling are essential at conveying a professional image. If yours is iffy, get extra pairs of eyes on your Website before you push that publish button to clean up any errors. Once you’ve got your final copy, read it aloud to yourself to make sure it sounds exactly the way you want it to sound. • Be dynamic. Keeping content fresh (blogs are great for this) keeps visitors returning to your site. • Be skimmable. Use short blocks of text, which are more reader-friendly. Likewise, use subheadings and bullets that allow visitors to skim your information quickly. Website Navigation • Be well-organized. Work your keyNavigation is an important • Be original. You want to use your keywords in both headings and text, but not so much that it seems unnatural. To that end, I use the keywords when they arise without overdoing it. If you use them too much, search engines may rank you lower because keyword oversaturation is a type of “spam.” Use the proper text tags. In your design template, you’ll have the opportunity to tag your text with Heading 2, Heading 3, paragraph, etc. Use these, because search engines actually give priority to keywords in heading tags. Spell your keywords correctly. Misspellings and typos can cause you to fall right out of search engines, so go over your text with a fine-toothed comb to ensure you’ve got it spelled right. Regularly add high-quality content. As your content grows stale, you begin to slip in search engines. Blogs are a great way to continue to add fresh content to your Web page. Use the available SEO tools. Most Webpage designers have SEO tools built in. Use them!
Name your images. Don’t just call an image whatever it came out of the camera with (DSC0040 or whatever). Rename it something relevant, such as “Ghost Photo.jpg.” Likewise, add keyword-rich alt text (such as “picture of a ghost”) in the photo editor of your Webpage designer. Seek inbound links. The more outside sites that link to you, the higher you will climb in search engine rankings. Trade links with other teams (many team Websites have a links page for just this purpose), post relevant comments on blogs with a link to your Web page, and engage in social media in meaningful ways while including a link to your Website. Make sure all of these linking strategies provide value so you’re not spamming social media with links to your Webpage. A note about banner exchange sites: If you have a links page, this is an OK way to have more inbound links, but I’m not a huge fan. That’s because many of these are link farms, which exist solely for the purpose of falsely improving SEO. Linking to a link farm can actually lower your ranking. Instead, seek links on high-quality, relevant sites. If a page exists purely for linking, it’s most likely a link farm. While this is far from a comprehensive tutorial on creating a Web page, it’s a great start to building your team’s Website in a manner that conveys professionalism while keeping visitors interested in your content.

Case Files Of The Unknown: Haunted Sites
First Ward School House
By Jenny Gurney, Proximity Paranormal
irst Ward School House is located in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin. Justin Libigs, his mother, Judy Carl, and her husband purchased this old school house in December 2010. Justin is the cofounder of Relatively Haunted, a group of investigators who are surprisingly all family. The family didn’t know much about the school when they purchased it. But they did know one thing — it was haunted by its past. From the first time the group entered the old school house, paranormal events began to occur. The History Behind the First Ward School House In the late 1800s, due to overcrowding in Wisconsin Rapids public schools, the Board of Education met and agreed to build a new school in the first ward district. The board quickly decided on the location and bought the land from Peter Dessaint for $600. The plan for the school house was drawn up by H.J Van RA Ryan of Milwaukee for a total of $240. The firm of House and Nelson built the schoolhouse for a total of $7,194. The seats in the school cost $433.80 and came from Manitowoc, while Centralia Hardware installed the plumbing for $236.95. The total cost to build the school house was $10,154. The bricks used for the building were made on site. The school housed kindergarten through the sixth grade and also hosted one high school grammar class. This building held the only nurses office in the district. The teachers taught physical education in the classrooms, and the school janitor reportedly taught boys basketball in the coal room in the basement. Teachers and the students were told to choose a new name for the school house in 1902, so they selected the name Irving, after the author Washington Irving (AKA Diedrich Knickerbocker). The original bell tower was struck by lightning in 1910 and was burned off, never to be replaced. A few years later, the school was closed due to lack of funds.
This picture, taken in 1909, shows a classroom full of students and their teacher at the First Ward School House. The site is now being renovated by the Libigs family.

Case Files Of The Unknown: Cryptids & Mythological Creatures
Behold, The Iceman Cometh By Rick E. Hale, Foundations Psychical Research
’m a pretty easy going guy, and hate is not a word that usually makes an appearance in my vocabulary. However, if there is one thing that makes my blood boil, the one thing that I truly can’t stand, it is the faking or hoaxing of evidence pertaining to claims of the paranormal. Outright hoaxes have always been a thorn in the side of those who take the study of the paranormal seriously and seek to prove the existence of the otherworldly through scientific methods. Since the early days of photography, hoaxing has been around. You can always find hucksters attempting to make a quick buck on the backs of the bereaved by claiming to have the ability to connect with the dearly departed. And the field of cryptozoology is no different. Folks have done everything from creating finely crafted monkey suits to wooden models of lake monsters, and then photographing both trying to pass them off as the real McCoy. Recently a couple of self-proclaimed cryptozoologists from Georgia claimed to have the dead body of a Bigfoot in their freezer. Unfortunately, this turned out to be the biggest cryptozoological hoax in recent memory. The Minnesota Iceman So let’s take a look at a case that has baffled many. Some claim these events are a hoax, while others are adamant that something out of the norm took place. In 1967, a most amazing exhibit began making the
rounds of carnivals and malls. The exhibitor, Frank Hansen stood atop a podium outside his exhibit and yelled, “Come one, come all and see the amazing corpse of a Wildman encased in ice.” Usually, something like this would immediately be seen as a hoax; however, the strange case of the Minnesota Iceman, which appeared to be the dead body of a bigfoot-like creature encased in a block of ice, may have been totally and completely legit, even if Mr. Hansen felt like he could make a quick buck on the find. The creature first came to the attention of researchers when a zoology student from the University of Minnesota plucked down his two bits to see this ancient wonder. When the curtain was pulled back and the iceman revealed, the student came to the conclusion that whatever the thing was, it appeared to be the real deal and immediate attention was required. When the student returned from the carnival, he contacted the gentleman who would come to be known as the father of modern cryptozoology, French cryptozoologist Bernard Heuvelmans. The student explained to Heuvelmans what he had seen. An Investigation of the Iceman Begins In 1968, Heuvelmans and his colleague Scottish zoologist Ivan T. Sanderson first viewed the creature at the Chicago Stock Fair. The duo knew they had to do whatever it took to get a closer look at this alleged iceman, so they made contact with the exhibitor, Frank Hansen,

Most researchers reject this theory and believe that whatever the creature may have been was a relict Homo Erectus smuggled into the country from Africa. Case Files Of The Unknown: Are We Alone?
The Allagash Waterway Abductions By Chad Wilson
he journey into the Allagash wilderness began innocently enough as a camping and fishing trip undertaken by four 20-something art students from a nearby art school. The first day, August 18, 1976, went without incident, as twin brothers Jack and Jim Weiner, their friend Charlie Foltz, and their guide, Chuck Rak, journeyed into the wilderness near Allagash, Maine, for a 14-day trip. All was well, until the second night, when they saw a light in the sky. At first the group thought the light came from a helicopter or weather balloon, but they were surprised when the light seemed to implode and disappear from view. Thinking nothing more of it, the four men continued their trip. Events on Eagle Lake? The fourth day of the trip found them having little luck catching any fish. With their food running low, the group decided to try their hand at night fishing and set out in a canoe onto the lake. To help them find their way back to shore after they were done fishing, the men built a huge bonfire, large enough to last at least four hours. As they were fishing, Chuck Rak first noticed the light hanging over the nearby hills close to the shore of the lake. It looked like what they had seen a few nights before. On a lark, Charlie Foltz signaled SOS at the strange light using a flashlight. The hovering light responded almost immediately, beaming a light onto the surface of the lake and then zooming toward the four in the canoe. Fear gripped the foursome as they realized the potential danger they faced. As they paddled frantically to reach the safety of shore, the craft caught up to the canoe, shining a beam of light on the men within. The next thing all four men remember is being on the shore near the canoe. The object they had all seen, was floating right above them, sitting there as if observing them. Finally it floated out over the lake before implod-

ing as it had done on the second night of their trip. It reappeared at a higher level, further away, before finally streaking away into the darkness, lost amidst the stars that filled the night sky. Oddly enough, the fire they had built to last at least four hours was embers at this point. Stranger even still, all of the men decided to call it a night without discussing the events that had just occurred. Very odd behavior for individuals who had such a strange experience not moments before. The next morning the group continued on with their trip, the night of August 20th nothing more than a footnote in their journey.
tions of their abduction experience. This was easy for them to do since they were all artists. Finally, they each took a polygraph, passing easily. Were the Allagash Abductions Real? According to the four men who went on that fateful trip, what they experienced was real. This is supported in their individual hypnosis sessions, which matched up with each of the others, and the polygraphs that they passed. The whole case is made even more compelling because of the illustrations each man contributed depicting the aliens, the room in which they were examined, and some of the equipment used in the experimentations. Today, the multitude of available sources dealing with alien abduction would lead one to question if an abduction experience had actually occurred, or if the whole thing was somehow influenced from an outside source. But in 1976 would such an explanation hold water? While there were some sources detailing alien abduction at the time, there is no evidence that any of the men been exposed to stories of visitors from another world kidnapping and experimenting on people of this planet. The Allagash abduction case leaves us with many questions, such as why beings from another planet are interested in us? Why come all this way to take samples of our bodily fluids and of our skin? It leads one to wonder, maybe they don’t come from as far as we think. Maybe they are just around this or that dimensional corner, or even from our own planet. While the Allagash abductions might not answer these questions, they are pieces of a very complicated puzzle that society will continue to try to solve.
EACH OF THE MEN TOOK A POLYGRAPH AND PASSED EASILY.
Nightmares From the Past The memories began as nightmares. Jack Weiner started having bad dreams years after the trip. They involved his brother Jim and the two others, Charlie Foltz and Chuck Rak, who had accompanied them on that trip long ago. At first, Jack thought he was the only one having the dreams. Jack was shocked to learn that his brother Jim was having identical dreams. While attending a UFO conference, Jim Weiner met author and UFO researcher Ray Fowler. On the advice of Fowler, the four men underwent hypnosis in 1988 to try and remember exactly what had happened that night on Eagle Lake. As they each underwent hypnosis therapy, they made a decision not to tell each other what they had experienced until all of the sessions were complete. Under hypnosis, each man who had gone on that trip to the Allagash wilderness years ago described a classic abduction scenario. All four claimed to have been taken aboard the craft where the alien beings forced them to take off their clothes before conducting medical examinations on them. The aliens took samples of the men’s skin and bodily fluids, including their blood, urine, and semen. The aliens, which had insect-like four-fingered hands and large glowing lidless eyes, spoke to the men telepathically, telling them to not be afraid and to do what the aliens told them. Some of the group even described devices used by the aliens during their examinations. After the hypnosis sessions were complete, the men discovered that they had the same experiences. Also after the sessions, each drew or painted illustra-

A Hazardous Haunting: Part 1 By Barry E. Taff, Ph.D., http://barrytaff.net/
any things can be said about investigating cases of alleged hauntings, ghosts, poltergeists, and apparitions. However, saying that this avocation is dangerous to one’s health is not one of them. Since the dawn of psychical research in Great Britain in 1882, there have been only a handful of documented cases where the phenomena demonstrated discrete, malevolent, or belligerent behavior, or more precisely, where it actually harmed someone. In point of fact, to the best of my knowledge, there has never been a reported case where the phenomena directly attacked the investigators. Until now, that is. I won’t even touch the Bell Witch case, as I believe that the poisoning was, most likely, done by a very corporeal being who tried to conceal their heinous act by blaming it on a ghost. One of the few contemporary instances that demonstrated such violent activity was The Entity case. The focus of The Entity case, Doris Bither, a mid-to-late 30-yearold woman on welfare, living in a two-time condemned house with four children, claimed to have been repeatedly sexually assaulted by three male ghosts: two held her down and one raped her. The Entity case demonstrated a high degree of psychokinetic (PK) activity along with the materialization of visible, three-dimensional balls of light that were captured on film. On one eventful evening, the apparition of the upper torso of a large man appeared in a lime green light in the corner of the bedroom while numerous witnesses watched in stunned amazement. Two friends assisting in the investigation felt their knees buckle and lost consciousness after observing the apparition. That was the last time they accompanied us on any cases. Somewhat substantiating the psychokinetic hypothesis in this case was Doris’ psychological profile, which was a perfect match for the emotionally volatile, self-destructive stereotype researchers have come to recognize over the

decades. However, in all fairness, a retroactive assessment of The Entity case cannot account for the appearance of apparitions anymore now than it could then? Like many other cases from my files, there is a very fine line differentiating true hauntings from poltergeists. A Case That Would Alter Our Lives Forever Since most cases never evolve into a full investigation due of the lack of observed and/or recorded phenomena, it was the furthest thought from our minds that we would run into another case that, for the most part, paralleled The Entity in almost every way. This case began in early 1989 when I received a phone call from Susan Castenada, a woman who claimed that her close friend, Jackie Hernandez (whose maiden name was appropriately, Hazard), was being troubled by ghosts. However, at this early stage, Jackie was very concerned about the possibility that we would automatically assume she was emotionally disturbed, and so she would
not allow us to meet or speak with her. Adding to the emotional turmoil and frenzy was the fact that Jackie was pregnant with her second child from her estranged husband in a made-in-hell marriage. We did not hear from Susan again until August of that year when Jackie herself finally gathered up the courage to call me and allowed us to pay her a visit. As we approached Jackie’s little turn-of-the century bungalow in a seedy, gang-infested, run-down area of San Pedro, California, we had no way of knowing that this case would alter all of our lives in ways we could never imagine. Accompanying me on the evening of August 8, 1989, was writer, producer, director, and cameraman, Barry Conrad, who had been working with me for about 18 months; Jeff Wheatcraft, a highly skeptical still-photographer and long-time friend and associate of Conrad’s; Beth Shatsky, a This photograph was taken mere seconds after Jeff Wheatcraft screamed in the attic of Jackie Hernandez’s San local photo-journalist; and Larry Brooks, a close friend. In the middle of this photograph’s frame, just to the left of the chairs, an anomalous three-dimensional light formation is seen. late 50s or early 60s, wearing a plaid shirt and 1950’s-style gasoline station attendant high-water pants. He had a sunken, emaciated look with large peering eyes. Considering an artist’s rendering that was drawn from Jackie’s description, the image bore a striking resemblance to a very gaunt Ernest Borgnine. Shortly after this last apparitional sighting, Jackie came close to losing her life while sleeping on the living room floor with Susan Castenada. They slept in the living room to avoid the continual onslaught of phenomena in the bedrooms. A strange, dense, brightly luminous cloud appeared over Jackie’s head and began suffocating her. As she started choking in her sleep, the sound awoke Susan who observed the hovering cloud and pulled Jackie out from under it to safety. An Attic From Hell Changes a Skeptic’s View After completing the initial interview, we began wrapping up and were about ready to go when Larry Brooks casually suggested to Wheatcraft that he go back up into the attic and shoot a few more photographs, just in case anything showed up. Although still very skeptical about the entire situation, Wheatcraft agreed and went to climb back through the tiny crawl space located above the laundry room at the back of the house. After a few minutes, we heard a loud thud, and Wheatcraft flew down out of the attic as if the devil himself were on his tail. When Wheatcraft came into the living room where the rest of us were talking, he was literally drained of all color and shaking intensely. He told us that something had forcefully grabbed his
35-mm SLR camera and wrenched it from his hands while he was shooting. Considering that this statement came from Wheatcraft, an ardent disbeliever, was rather impressive, even though the rest of us did not witness the event. Immediately, we again went up into the attic and found Wheatcraft’s expensive camera. We discovered that whatever agency pulled the camera from his hands had neatly detached the lens from its body and placed both pieces down on opposite ends of the attic, some 15 feet apart, all without damaging them. The camera’s body lay in a fruit box and the lens on the floor. While examining the attic in even greater detail and finding nothing to account for what happened to Wheatcraft and his camera, Wheatcraft was suddenly and violently pushed across the attic by an unseen force. Conrad, who was right in front of Wheatcraft with his video camera, witnessed the event and described it as if a very large, invisible hand had shoved Wheatcraft in his back, vaulting him forward. Wheatcraft suffered actual injuries that required medical attention. At this point we decided to call it a night as the phenomena began to settle down. Needless to say, we certainly did not expect anything to occur during our visit, so the loud pounding noises and Wheatcraft’s experiences were a welcome change from the boring tedium experienced while investigating most cases. Except, of course, for Wheatcraft. Another Investigation Turns Hazardous On September 4th, Jackie called Conrad at midnight complaining of intense activity. Conrad, Wheatcraft, and photographer/assistant Gary Boehm arrived shortly together. (Due to a massive heart attack suffered by my father, I was temporarily sidelined for several months during the course of this investigation and as such could not attend several visits to Jackie’s original house). During this particular visit, small and sometimes large corpuscular masses of light were seen in the laundry room and later in the attic. These luminous anomalies were preceded by strange snapping noises and the sounds of heavy breathing, which eventually led Gary to the area below the attic crawl space. While Wheatcraft was again examining the attic in a desperate effort to determine what happened to him on August 8th, something unseen violently attacked him. According to Wheatcraft, he was walking toward the crawl space where Gary was about to descend, when suddenly he felt a restriction around his neck pulling him up and to his left. As the force tightened its grasp around Wheatcraft’s neck, he let out a loud yell or moan, that alerted Gary as to his plight. Being a trained photographer, Gary turned toward the direction of Wheatcraft’s voice and fired off several shots of his 35mm camera
while rushing to his aid. The only light available to Gary was the camera’s flash. Apparently, something had wrapped a plastic clothesline around Wheatcraft’s neck, severely tightened it and pulled him up over a large nail extending away from a rafter in the attic’s ceiling. The force behind the attempted hanging threw Wheatcraft’s glasses off, sent him into momentary shock, and rendered him unconscious. As Gary eventually got Wheatcraft down off the nail, he discovered that Jeff’s eyes were glazed over and he was suffering from deep rope burns in his neck. We later determined that the knot tied in the clothesline was a bowline or “seaman’s knot,” which none of us knew anything about prior to this event. One thing we did know was that if it had not been for Gary, in all likelihood, Wheatcraft could have died from strangulation or a broken neck. After attempting to bring Wheatcraft back down to reality and calm his nerves, Conrad and Gary went back up into the attic to search for what almost hung Wheatcraft. Nothing unusual was discovered.
no apparent reason while in my hands. I put the camera down on the kitchen table on top of an overturned glass and watched it rapidly rock back and forth, while Conrad captured the event on video. What was not seen by the naked eye, but caught by Conrad’s video camera, was the appearance of a small yellow-orange mass of light speeding through the LCD readout window of the Nikon from no apparent source. Later analysis revealed that the diminutive ball of light was the image of a middle-aged man’s head, displaying a receding hairline and large, dark eyes. On another evening, while leaving Jackie’s house, both Shatsky and Conrad observed what appeared to be balls of light shooting skyward from Jackie’s little bungalow. For the most part, it resembled roman candles used on the 4th of July or fast moving ball lightning. Investigation revealed no apparent source for these luminous anomalies. As usual, the phenomena happened too quickly to be caught on film or video. Over the course of the next several months, Conrad captured many more orbs of light with his video camera. For the most part, these resembled tracer bullets, emitting their own source of bright light and traveling at speeds in excess of 60 mph. The majority of these lights occurred just prior to the manifestation of other, more disturbing phenomena. When we first spotted these corpuscular masses of light (which were only caught by the camera and never observed by the naked eye), we thought they might be in-
Wheatcraft could have died from strangulation or a broken neck.
Facing an Otherworldly, Potentially Deadly Ordeal Following this terrifying event, Wheatcraft had to face the disturbing contradiction generated by his otherworldly ordeal. He previously had absolutely no belief whatsoever in paranormal phenomena, and now he had to deal with the fact that a direct encounter with it almost took his life. Wheatcraft’s behavior did not demonstrate any immediate changes, apart from the stress resulting from the encounter. However, for good reason he never again returned to Jackie’s San Pedro home. During one of the numerous visits that followed without Wheatcraft, an immense ball of light appeared behind Conrad, after which he suddenly lost consciousness for no apparent reason. In fact, Conrad himself did not directly observe the light as it appeared behind his back. Susan, Jackie, and others witnessed it. Another peculiar aspect of this investigation was the fact that our equipment, whether high-quality video cameras, tape decks, thermal imaging devices, 35mm SLR cameras, or audio recording equipment, would mysteriously malfunction as if the internal electronics were neutralized. Even though we always arrived with freshly charged or new battery packs, most of our systems would inevitably shut down. This type of effect is actually quite common in our investigations. One noteworthy event in particular was when Beth Shatsky’s mini-35mm Nikon camera began shaking for

The three balls of light displayed in this photograph demonstrate the high degree of strangeness associated with and documented in this case. sects reflecting the camera’s light. However, when we were able to slow down the frame rate and enhance the image, it was quite clear to us, as well as a professional entomologist, that these enigmatic light sources were not insects. This type of ghost light is actually more common than believed, as they were observed quite frequently by the naked eye and captured on standard photographic film during The Entity case. Ironically, however, what was visually perceived during The Entity case could not be photographed and what was photographed could not be seen ... a paradox. In Jackie’s case, Conrad was able to videotape what the eye could not see, and considering that he was not using the highest-quality video camera incorporating low-light capability, obtaining these images is even more intriguing and inexplicable. During yet another visit, the smoke detectors kept activating and squawking in response to our yes or no questions — even though we later found the electrical wiring and subsequently the power was disconnected! If this was an unconscious psychokinetic act on Jackie’s part, it’s almost unprecedented in Parapsychological research. A Change in Environment After enduring several more months of intense paranormal bombardment, Jackie finally moved to a new en-
vironment in October of that year (1989). With the belief that substantial physical distance between her and her San Pedro home would put an end to the phenomena, Jackie moved to Weldon, a small trailer-park community in Kern County, California, some 380 miles north of Los Angeles. However, it was not long before Jackie’s worst fears were realized. The phenomena appeared to have moved with her, which again, is not that uncommon in these types of cases. Shortly after moving into the trailer park, she began hearing strange scratching sounds emanating from the shed behind the house. Shortly thereafter, the psychokinetic storms around her began anew, but with even greater fury. One day, while moving an old projection television from a shed to her trailer house, Jackie and her new neighbors saw the apparitional image of an old man’s head appear on the TV’s screen, even though it was not plugged in. Within hours, Jackie put in a call to Conrad asking for help. On April 13, 1990, Conrad and Wheatcraft traveled north to the desolate area of Weldon to assist Jackie. Jeff mistakenly, and logically, thought that nothing significant would happen to him since this was a new residence for Jackie. Upon their arrival, they almost immediately began observing numerous psychokinetic events, as well as the same masses of light that surrounded Jackie in San Pedro. Since much of the activity seemed to be focused in the shed behind Jackie’s house, Wheatcraft set up his video camera pointing directly into the shed from an outside perspective. After returning to Jackie’s house, Conrad and Wheatcraft soon noticed that the tripod-mounted and locked-inplace video camera had mysteriously turned itself around so it was no longer facing the shed, but was now aimed toward the house. When later reviewing the taped footage of the time just prior to the camera being turned around, an enigmatic light source was detected moving from behind the camera into the shed at approximately 122 mph. At first, they again suspected that it might be an insect. However, the velocity of the lights combined with its luminosity and shape suggested otherwise. We even considered the possibility of fireflies, except that they do not exist on the West Coast of the U.S. and then, of course, they do not accelerate to velocities of 122 mph, at least not according to entomologists we spoke with. When this enigmatic light was slowed down and enhanced as the earlier ones were, it revealed a peculiar configuration. We showed this footage to more than 20 individuals who had no idea or suggestion as to what they were observing. The unanimous response was that the light looked like a very small, disc-shaped object with a hemispheric structure resting upon its upper section. Sort of a micro-miniature UFO. I know. I know. We are not trying to mix our metaphors
here by even suggesting that we are dealing with UFO-related phenomena as opposed to paranormal events, or even an indirect correlation between the two as there is no evidence for that nexus in this particular case. It’s just that this particular image is quite distinct in its shape and therefore bears mention, if for no other reason. God only knows what it means.
anger, resentment, and unresolved conflicts resulted in an irascible personality. More precisely, Wheatcraft manifested all the symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), for which he has never sought or received treatment. As is quite common in such traumatizing events, Wheatcraft needed some form of closure to this matter. In the pursuit of such, he found it necessary to place blame for what happened to him on something or someone. He obviously could not directly blame the unknown agency that repeatedly attacked him. That was far too intangible for closure and emotional grounding. Unfortunately, the only source available for blame was Barry Conrad, as he was the one who brought Wheatcraft into this event. Wheatcraft began behaving in a sarcastic, malicious and vindictive manner toward Conrad, that totally ended their friendship and working relationship. While conducting video interviews on what had just occurred, Conrad captured another anomalous light that hovered just outside the kitchen window and seemingly peered in, pulsing at a very slow rate. Since Jackie then lived literally in the middle of nowhere, Conrad felt confident that this light could not have been explained by any conventionally prosaic source, such as a passing car or a flashlight.
Conrad was actually concerned that Wheatcraft might be dead.
Another Violent Encounter As the level of phenomena began to dwindle, Conrad, Wheatcraft, Jackie, and two of her neighbors went back into her trailer house to relax. As they sat there talking, subtle psychokinetic events began to occur. This eventually motivated the group to bring out a Ouija board and try their hand at it, figuring that they had nothing to lose. In retrospect, their judgment in this matter could not have been more in error. Sitting around a small card table used for eating in the dining area, they began playing with the Ouija board. Almost immediately, the dining area grew extremely cold (while the outside temperature was quite warm). Suddenly, the chairs and table began to intensely vibrate, then, violently shake. In the next instant, Wheatcraft was physically levitated along with his chair and hurled backwards up into the air in a parabolic arc, striking the wall where it met the ceiling behind him. The resulting impact knocked Wheatcraft unconscious. The stunned group watched in horror as the event, lasting all of one second, resulted in Wheatcraft lying motionless on the floor, like a broken rag doll. Given the amount of force demonstrated, Conrad was actually concerned that Wheatcraft might be dead. Fortunately, he was not. Wheatcraft related what he experienced during the levitation. He first had the sensation of a large boxing glove compressing his diaphragm. He then felt himself lift upwards along with the chair he was seated in. He was aware of the chair falling out from beneath him as his body was forcefully slammed into the wall behind him. He then lost consciousness and awoke on the floor surrounded by the others in the room. The emotional scars resulting from, first, the camera being yanked out of his hands, then being shoved across the attic by an intangible force, the unforgettable hanging encounter in combination, with this most recent experience, pushed Wheatcraft into a deep depression, from which he may still suffer. After this event, Wheatcraft was never quite the same. His moods became very unstable, his temper grew volatile and intense, and his general temperament indicated extreme irritability. High levels of anxiety combined with a generalized

This peculiar articulating light formation was dancing just below the ceiling when photographed by Jackie Hernandez. Its texture is very reminiscent of plasma (the fourth state of matter). The eyeball description of this luminous configuration was that of a twisting and contorting miniature sun in the midst of dispersion.

Demonology — The Dark Files
What Is Demonology? By Jerry Williams, Eastside Paranormal Society
y name is Jerry Williams, and I’m a demonologist. I first went through Ministry school in 1996 and became an Ordained Minister of New Life Ministry Church in Ohio. I took on my first Demonic case in 2001 with a family of our church. I wasn’t into the paranormal or demons, but little did I know, that day in June 2001 would change my life forever. I recorded the house blessing and found that there was several demons in the home. The screeching sound on the recordings made me realize the true works of the Devil. The demon attacked me physically, mentally, and spiritually. I felt my throat being grabbed and the anxiety and fear that went through my body. I knew there was something dark and evil in that home. The words it spoke to me were, “Don’t you pray to God.” It acted like a female child and said, “Please stop,” sounding like it was in pain when it said that. There was so much that happened, but that will come later in other columns. I then decided to go into demonology. I went through six years of schooling at New Life Ministry Church and College in Michigan. I also attended Bob Jones University with a doctrine in exorcisms and deliverance. Since then, I have investigated over 400 cases of the demonic and performed over 34 exorcisms and deliverance of the demonic. I have been a Minister since 1996, and I can tell you that demons are real. What Is Demonology? Now I’d like to tell you about demonology and demonologists. Demonology is the study of demons through many different cultures and their religious doctrines. Demonology started over 100 years ago.
Demonologists study demons and the occult. The demonologist will go to the location and perform an investigation to see if demonic activity is present. The demonologist looks for signs, like knocking sounds or smells like sulphur. The demonologist will try to use religious tactics to lure the demon out to either talk or fight. This is a way to find out if they are present. Demonologists search for other signs that show if the demons is seeking an attack. Demons have been here before the human race, and they were recorded to get stronger around the World War II era. Alphonse de Spina wrote about the 10 orders of the demonic, putting demons into a classification to help see how they affect us. If you search on the Internet, you can read find de Spina’s work on the subject. Demonology and demonologists are different than what Hollywood makes them out to be. What people don’t understand is that this field is real, and I have been face to face with demons. Once they know you have seen them or know they exist, they will sometimes try to come after you by attacking you with scratches, making you feel that God will not protect you, generating hate toward your family or friends, as well as depression, hate for holy or spiritual items, suicidal thoughts, and more. Demons will try to make the signs of the possessed appear as a mentally ill person. I will say that there is a difference between the two, and I will cover that in future columns as well. A Word About Paranormal Investigation I always ask paranormal investigators to say protection prayers and be careful, because the ghosts you encounter might not be ghosts at all. They could potentially be
demons. One way to find out: Ask the spirit a question that makes them repeat God or Jesus as a test word for verification. Demons can act like a familiar spirit, and they will talk to an investigator until they become comfortable with them. Then the Demon could try to come home with the investigator or even possess them. I ask you to remember this wording, “Would you trust that spirit with your children?” If you say no, then that would be your way of protecting your children, so always keep your guard up. It takes five minutes to say a prayer and then when you leave say, “Do not follow me home in the name of Jesus Christ.” The person can use their own spiritual way of protection,
not just Christian protection. In the next column, I will talk more about demonology and possession. I will close with this: If you ever need help, always ask someone in this field. That is what we are here for. I encourage you to make sure this person has an educational background in this field. I think you should check on anyone you bring into your home. I will leave some important information below for all of you, and until next month’s column, have a blessed year. January is the month of Belial (the demon of destruction, which inspires worthless feelings). DEMONS CAN ACT LIKE A FAMILIAR SPIRIT.
Do Demons Exist? By Chris Conlon, CON-TACT Paranormal Research Team
emonology — a lot of us wonder if demons really do exist. What do they look like? Why do they cause harm? That’s what demonologists must learn and help find the answers to. Demonology is the study of demons. In the paranormal field, the word demon gets tossed around a lot. Paranormal teams who don’t study or routinely take cases on the matter find themselves almost at war with reality. I have been in the demonic field for awhile now, and while I can’t answer all these questions, I can shed light on what I have learned so far. Before I do, I will tell you that I am not a doctor nor do I claim to be one in my studies. What I have learned in my experience is that 98% of cases of demonic oppression or possessions are based upon the principle of human psychosis. These could include bipolar, schizophrenia, and multiple personality disorder, but the list goes on. In rare circumstances, however, demonic oppression or possession is really occurring. Let me give you a quick rundown of what the Catholic Church makes clients of said possession go through. First, a medical exam is required and then a mental exam. If the client passes both of those tests, then they must show signs of possession, such as levitation, telekinesis, knowing about a person or thing
they could not possibly know about, and also speaking in a language fluently without ever knowing it. If and when the client shows all those signs, they still have to wait for the bishop and chief exorcist to authorize an exorcism. That is a lot of steps for a client to take. However, many demonologists just jump right into attempting to deliver the client or giving them their own rendition of exorcism. My case and point is this: If you have a client, for example, with bipolar disorder, you may cause that person to become much worse instead of helping them get better. When the correct steps are not taken, it could also cause the client to even commit suicide. When this happens, the paranormal team that handled the case is then liable and could be held for negligent homicide. Take the right precautions when dealing with anything in the paranormal, especially demonic cases. Always get professional help, look for warning signs, and ask relevant questions to find out what may be causing the issue. This article is meant to keep paranormal teams safe and shed some light on the demonic. In upcoming issues, I will examine case studies such as Anneliese Michel and Robby, the case that inspired the movie The Exorcist. My goal is to help raise awareness in the paranormal field. Until next month, thank you and God bless.

Inside the Psychic Mind
Join Me as We ‘Go Inside the Psychic Mind’! By William Becker, Paranormal Insights & Northwest Ghost Tours
ello! I want to take a moment and introduce myself and my approach to the psychic. My name is William Becker, and among other things, I am a psychic. Mostly, I work with paranormal entities, not the living. These entities have included the humans who have died, animals, and other non-human entities. In the situations where I do read the living, it is usually through the dead. I also do past- and between-life readings, and I teach psychic development classes, as well as mentor individuals. My other interests and activities in the paranormal include investigation, study, and speaking engagements. I am also the cosponsor of the Oregon Ghost Conference in the very haunted town of Oregon City, Oregon. One of the activities I especially enjoy and find fulfilling is remote reading of haunted places. It’s an automatic response when people mention going on an investigation, or activity at a house they know of, or if I see a photo of a haunted location. I’ve been privileged to work with people all over the U.S. and Europe on some of the paranormal activity they face in their own investigations, as well as their own homes and neighborhoods. A couple of the things I don’t do are cleansings and clearings. There are several reasons for this. First, the entities were there first, and I think that most of the time we don’t have the right to send them away. The goal, in my mind, is to develop a positive relationship with them so that you can live with them in harmony. Another aspect is that from my direct experience and research, the human entities we find are not trapped souls. It is the energy from part of their personality, intellect, and activity that is imprinted in a place of significance in their lives. Or, I have found in some cases that the entities are actually visiting a location. The human beings I’ve found in “haunted” locations are not complex and complete enough to be the full souls of a person.
Any entity that isn’t an energy imprint has its own issues to work out, and it’s habitation of the area is part of that work. We don’t have the right to tell them what they need or where they need to be. They most likely know more than we do about that! Cleansing or clearing a location, if it isn’t done exactly right, can open the door for all sorts of problems. If a void is left, then it’s very possible for the cast out ones to return — with friends! Or something worse can fill the void. Is Your Child Psychic? By Jackie Chin, http://psychicconnextions.blogspot.com/
o you live with a child who is having dreams that seem to take life in waking hours? Does your child tell you about who is calling before the phone rings? Have they ever mentioned loved ones who have crossed over giving them messages or stories from your past? If so, then you may be experiencing a very normal occurrence of child psychic awareness. Children from a very young age, as early as two, can often sense energies that seem to baffle adults, and they do not have that need to suppress what they see or feel. However, many times these sensations can be quite scary, and they should be addressed with kid gloves. If you’re willing to speak with your child about their experience, first and foremost do not ask them leading questions. Depending on their age and ability to speak, their thoughts clearly allow them to come to you in whatever way they feel most comfortable. Asking leading questions or prying can make them feel like they are a victim or are not normal. When they have a question or some information that they want to share, it may come out in pictures so give them plenty of crayons and paper to express these visions. If they are verbal, allow them to talk to you and make sure to listen with compassion. Ask them how their experience has made them feel, or if they would like to talk to anyone else about it. Many times they will tell you bits and pieces, and it may not sound or feel right to you, but to them it makes perfect sense. Keep a journal of these events, and be mindful of things that seem to have a pattern. If the child is currently going through some emotional trauma, such as divorce, death of a loved one, or medical situation, it may be that they are experiencing stress/anxiety and the events will pass once they regain some sort of normalcy. Understanding the why of these events is just as important as dealing with the fact that they are happening in the first place. Once it has been established that your child is gaining information from a supernatural source, it is important to find someone they are comfortable with to discuss what is happening. You are their first person of choice, because they have come to you to share these visions. If you have someone
you know that has previous experience in these matters, it would be time to ask them if they would step in and assist with any questions you or your child may have. You may also have a pastor or someone of faith who can help discern your child’s information. Another resource that may or may not be readily available to you is a local ghost hunting chapter or paranormal research facility. Before you enlist services from a group, first do your own research into their background. Many groups out there are very good, reliable, and committed to paranormal investigations and research, but like with all things some are not so enlightened. If nothing else, listen to your child, and do no blow them off or make them feel like they are performing. Do not ask them zillions of questions and make them feel like they are a freak. It will damage their personal and spiritual growth. Not everyone will respond well to a psychic child, and so they must be taught to not offer this information to strangers or those who would seek out to manipulate them. Like anything else, they must be shown that stranger danger also exists in the psychic world. If they are being pestered by a spirit, they need to learn that they can say to that unwanted presence to leave them alone. Also, if they are truly gifted, it is important to teach them how to protect themselves from unwanted energies by learning positive energy work, blessings of their faith, and/ or spiritual protection. I will be addressing these issues in further writings.

Three Hotel Hells: Japan Doesn’t Disappoint By Rick E. Hale, Foundations Psychical Research
love Japan. I love everything about the Land of the Rising Sun. The country has a great honor-bound culture, I have a mad addiction to sushi, and Anime is awesome (subbed not dubbed — what kind of nerd do you take me for?). So imagine my delight when I discovered that Japan is home to three of the most haunted hotels in the world. Royal Helltell ... oops Hotel The Royal Hotel (Takara Hotel) on the Island of Okinawa sounds like it would have been a great place to stay ... if it wasn’t for the pissed-off ghosts making sure that it would never open in the first place. Construction of the Royal Hotel began when Japan’s premier construction company decided to throw caution to the wind and build over the ruins of ancient Nakagusuku Castle. However, it would seem that they forgot to ask the breathing impaired residents if this was OK with them. Apparently it wasn’t. Shortly after construction started, workers began dying mysterious deaths that were believed to be caused by a supernatural agency of hate. When nobody wanted to work there — after all, who would want to tempt fate — the owner lost his shirt on the deal, as well as his mind after witnessing a terrifying apparition. The Royal Hotel now sits abandoned, and nobody in their right mind will tear it down for fear that the ghosts will finish the job of eliminating anyone who tarnishes their land. Hotel Liebhaber: A ‘Love’ Hotel With a Dark History If you’re in Osaka and you happen to score a little “action,” then Osaka’s Hotel Liebhaber is the no-tell for you. And although this love hotel has vending machines

Visitors to Hotel Liebhaber have reported witnessing the apparition of a young girl who was brutally murdered in one of the rooms during the 1980s. No one is certain who this sad little ghost might be, but she is said to drift
from room to room watching everything that goes on. Others have claimed to feel her icy touch. So if you’re in the market for a no-tell motel, you can find Hotel Liebhaber at: Osaka-fu, Hirakata-shi Minaminakaburi 3-14, Japan. +81-072-833-1919. Crystals & Herbology: Mystical Etchings From A Medicyn Woman’s Grimoire
The World of Crystals and Gemstones By Silvermoon Medicyn, www.silvermoonmedicyn.com
n the world of crystals and gemstones, you can find many different ways to follow their call. Each person that writes a book on healing stones has a somewhat different spin on how to acquire, use, and maintain healing stones. Remember this one piece of advice that I will always give: Take the information that resonates with you and keep it; then discard the rest. You must trust that your soul and spirit guides will lead you to what works best for you. Keeping it simple does work, too. How to Pick Stones When picking stones, there are a few ways that I feel works best. The first way is to just pick the ones that look the prettiest to you; here you trust your intuition completely. This is an excellent method if you’re not experienced or don’t quite understand the feelings you get from stones. You can choose stones in the raw or polished forms, because the power in the stone does not change; however, some believe it does make a difference. Some people like to follow strict rules around the power of stones, but I feel rules about how to use them only restricts the stones’ ability to work. You are able to program stones, but I will talk about programming later. So choose what works best for you. The second way to find a stone is to pick one that catches your eye and then hold your hand palm down over the stone while quieting your mind’s eye. Notice
how it makes you feel; you may feel heat, tingling, or a twitching in your hand. You may feel certain emotions or a change in your breathing pattern. Those signs mean the stone is communicating with you. You may then want to know what the metaphysical meaning of the stone is before you obtain it. Most good shops have a book or a short reference as to what the stone’s main purpose is. But again, remember the stone is working with your soul and sometimes you may be attracted to a stone and you consciously don’t know you need it yet. Being completely unaware of what stones are needed at this point, sometimes it requires one to get past small personal issues before one can see clearly as to what is needed to assist their soul’s growth. It is like taking steps to get to the top, but you can’t get to the top of the mountain without climbing up the side and dealing with the things on the pathway first. Connecting to Your Intuition Okay, you’re still trying to understand how to connect with your intuition. You found some stones you like, but you’re still unsure as to what is really occurring. Trust is the issue at this point, and you must let go of your preconceived ideas that your thinking is crazy or it is strange to feel stones. This will be the first step in your spiritual growth with crystals and stones. There are no wrong answers in stones. Just as many believe that God will not give
you what you cannot handle well, neither will your spirit guide. Here is my prescription for beginners. These are inexpensive and most people find them to be simple stones, nothing to raise a lot of attention with onlookers if you’re struggling with that. Amethyst: It opens your third eye, allowing you to let go of your perceived ideas and connect you with the cosmic consciousness. Rose quartz: Opens your heart chakra to assist you in learning to love all of yourself fully and accept your flaws so they will not hold you back. Clear quartz crystal: You can choose it in any form; double terminal points are the best, but any kind will work. These stones are used to connect us to all energy, creating a connection to cosmic consciousness and allowing this pure positive energy to flow through your soul from your head and feet. Hematite: A grounding stone that is magnetized naturally; it connects us to the earth star chakra that is within the earth. It helps drain negative energy out of your feet and hands.
How to Use Your Crystals and Stones Now that you have your stones, you can carry them on your person, in a pocket or in a medicine pouch. It does not matter where you keep them as long as you can see them or feel them at least once daily. You can even meditate with them on your body. One of the other things you can do is to look up your stones’ meanings. Two books I really recommend and use a lot are The Book of Stones by Robert Simmons & Naisha Ahsian and Healing With Gemstones and Crystals by Diane Stein. Many also use the book Love Is in the Earth: A Kaleidoscope of Crystals — The Reference Book Describing the Metaphysical Properties of the Mineral Kingdom by Melody. Each book has a different twist on the topics but relay the same basics. By learning more about your stones, you can empower the work between you and the stones’ properties. This will help you understand why it has called to you and will assist you in finding more stones for your future spiritual growth. In my next column I will talk in depth about the care, cleansing, and programming of stones and how to do it.

Magic & Lore: When The Mystical And Paranormal Blur
Defining Astral Travel and Projection By Silvermoon Medicyn, www.silvermoonmedicyn.com
ave you ever awakened yourself out of a dream with a jerk? Believe it or not you were on the edge of sleep and beginning to astral travel, or astral project. Some think it takes a special process or certain ritual to make astral travel happen, but that is just not true. The astral plane is the area between the physical state and the spiritual world. There are many layers to the spirit world, and you cannot get to this plane unless you are in a dream state. You can, however, learn to acquire the art of astral projection using deep meditation. Astral travel is a natural part of our existence and part of your psychosomatic character. Astral travel occurs when your astral body leaves the physical body. How Can You Astral Travel? When you dream, you’re traveling in the astral plane; you are usually unconscious to this process as you are moved about the currents of the planes automatically. When you are in this state, you are being guided by your spirit guides or higher self. Don’t fear, you will return every night. You have a silver cord attached to both of the bodies that ensure you will return safely together once the physical body awakens. The cord is limitless and not just anyone can cut it. While traveling in our dreams, it is said that we can meet three different kinds of entities. They are sleepers, astral travelers, and the dead or disincarnated. Sleepers are others just like us out walking the ethers and creating an illusion by using their own minds and experiences. Most of them don’t have any control over their dreams. When someone says, “You were in my dreams last night,” you can be assured you and that person were on the same plane. Astral travelers are the entities you meet on a spiritual level while astral traveling. They are usually traveling on a conscious level and are looking to complete transcendent development or spiritual lessons. When you meet another astral traveler, it is for validating experiences that will stick with you in the waking hours or it may be to help you put
some pieces together of a puzzle or issue you may have been dealing with. For example, a deep experience I had while astral traveling occurred when I was very sick with Lupus. Two times I traveled to a witch doctor located somewhere in the ethers, and both times he did healing work on me with tuning forks and Reiki. When I awoke, I was better and knew of two new ways to work with my physical body to help it heal. The last type is the dead or disincarnated traveler.
These are what we consider ghosts. Historic Fairbanks House, Dedham, MA — Part 1 By Jack Kenna, S.P.I.R.I.T.S. of New England
s some of you readers may know, the S.P.I.R.I.T.S. of New England team, which I belong to, has been blessed with having had the opportunity to investigate some very unique historical locations throughout the Boston, Massachusetts area, including the Deane Winthrop House in Winthrop, MA, and the U.S.S. Constitution (Old Iron Sides) in Charlestown, MA. But it was the unique link between our team founder, Ellen MacNeil, and her participation on the Winthrop Improvement and Historical Society that lead to another unique opportunity to investigate what might be considered the sister house to the historic Deane Winthrop House, the Fairbanks House in Dedham, Massachusetts. For those who don’t know, these houses “are” the two oldest existing wooden framed homes in the United States. The Deane Winthrop was originally built about 1637 by Captain William Pierce and then acquired in 1647 by Deane Winthrop, the youngest son of John Winthrop, the first Governor of Massachusetts. It is also the longest lived in wooden framed home in the United States, having been continuously occupied since 1647 to this very day. The Fairbanks House in Dedham, MA, is “the” oldest wooden framed house in the United States. It was built about 1637 for Jonathan and Grace Fairebanke and their six children. All of the pre-cut timber for the original house had been imported from England by Jonathan Fairebanke and still stands to this day. Over the years the house had additions put on as the family grew. The Fairbanks House also has the very unique history of being owned by same family since it was first built in 1637. Today it is still owned and now operated as a museum by the Fairbanks Family in America, Inc. You can find out more about these unique historic homes on their Websites at www.wihaonline.org and www.fairbankshouse.org. I know I may have gotten off topic a bit, but I always feel it’s important to know at least a little bit about the history

of a location in order to better understand why a particular location might be haunted and who might be haunting it. As I had started to explain, it was because of our S.P.I.R.I.T.S. founder, Ellen, and her connection to the Winthrop Improvement and Historical Society that led to our being requested to investigate the Fairbanks House by the Fairbanks Family in America, Inc. in November 2011. We were not the first team to investigate the location though; another paranormal team had conducted two previous investigations, one in fall 2010 and one in spring 2011. We were informed by the Fairbanks Family organization that there were some issues and things just didn’t work out between them and this other team. After quite a few conversations from June through October 2011 between our S.P.I.R.I.T.S. team founder Ellen and the Fairbanks House Business Operations Manager, Mrs. Lee Anne Hodson, during meetings of the historical societies, Mrs. Hodson cleared us with the Fairbanks Family
organization to conduct a third paranormal investigation of the house. We performed our investigation on the evening of November 12, 2011. The Tour of the Fairbanks House Viewing the Fairbanks House for the first time brings to mind thoughts of a simpler time — a time before cars, paved roads, electricity, cell phones, and computers. This is a farm house from days long gone by, when a living was earned by long days of hard work and one’s own ingenuity. The amazingly good condition of this 375-year-old house speaks volumes to the hard work, pride, and love that this family put into their home and their daily lives. By working these first two groups in these locations, it put us at the farthest ends of the house from each other to help prevent any cross contamination. Sharon and her group investigated their location for a little over an hour and then returned to base camp in the gift shop. Justin left at about this time, while Sharon, Sarah, and Meghan remained at base camp. interaction to our questions in the form of knock responses. We then regrouped with the rest of the team back at the gift shop. We spent a short time discussing some of the things we had experienced, which included Sarah hearing what she described as a very odd and loud noise in her ear while investigating the west wing bedroom, which startled her so much that she dropped her flashlight. Neither Sharon nor Justin heard this noise, but it was captured on the audio recorder in the room. When played back during our data review, you can hear it is a deep male voice saying what sounds like “hello.” In this same room, Sharon also heard what she described as scratching sounds and saw a shadow move along the wall behind where Sarah was sitting near the bed. After returning to the gift shop, and while the rest of us were still upstairs investigating the other bedroom, Sharon, Meghan, and Sarah also heard what sounded like footsteps coming from what they thought to be the east wing parlor. They went to investigate but found nothing. They even called Ellen and me on the walkie-talkie to see if we had been walking around upstairs, which we had not. Ellen and I informed them that we had experienced what we believed to be knock responses to some of our questions and some other odd sounds that we could not account to anything, but did not experience anything like what they had. Upon review of the audio we had in that room, though, I did find we had captured a couple of EVPs, both of which were very intriguing. In the first EVP, you hear Ellen and Katie talking about a photo of some of the family members that had moved to the state of Maine at one time, and in the EVP you can hear a woman’s voice saying, “Show them Maine.” What’s significant about this EVP is that there is a large hand-made map in that room of the United States
back in the 1900s. The map was made by one of the family members back in the 1900s. Was this spirit trying to tell Katie to show us where Maine was on the map? The second EVP captured seems to be in response to a question that I asked about whose bedroom was it. The answer in the EVP is again a woman’s voice saying, “The child.” Katie told us during our investigation of this room that it was once used as the bedroom for all of the children of the family. Is this also what the spirit was attempting to tell me? At about 11 p.m., we broke up into small teams again. By this time Katie and Fletcher had left, but Lee Anne had come back to check on us and asked if she could also investigate with us. Sarah and Sharon took Lee Anne and Meghan with them to investigate the kitchen and lean-to areas, while I sat at the DVR monitor with Ellen. This gave that group the chance to attempt to make contact with whatever spirits might be there, without another group also trying to do the same thing at the same time. I always keep in the back of my mind that “ghosts are people too; they just don’t have bodies,” and while investigating I do like to try and approach them as such. When two people try to carry on two conversations with one person at the same time, that person begins to get confused, overwhelmed, and frustrated and typically ends up just leaving both conversations. The same might be thought to happen to spirits when confronted by more than one investigative group trying to talk to them at the same time. By limiting the investigation to one active group, it might focus any potential spirit activity onto the group and thus increase the chances of interaction. It’s just a theory I have, but I do feel it tends to work more often than not.

Tales From the Haunted Heathman Hotel By Rob St.Helen, West Coast Ghost Hunters
ell, the holidays are over now, and I do hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season. Here at the haunted Heathman Hotel, I must say, the spirits of the hotel behaved pretty well for the most part. No bulbs fell off the tree this year like in years past, and no one got clocked on the head, which is always a good thing! Business Is Booming Business has been very busy lately. It normally slows down a bit during the holidays, but not this year. We normally have paranormal teams come in (or at least ask to come in) and do investigations, but this year only one team came in to investigate. I have to be honest, though. I think it was nice only to deal with one team because it gave me rest from the stories and gave our invisible friends some rest as well. More Shadow People Seen That being said, shadow people are seen almost every night, and the high heels walking across the empty lobby floor has been heard a time or too as well. I know of one paranormal team that is coming in early in January. They are based here in Portland, Oregon, and I am eager to see what they come up with. I have been working on a video blog for a while, and I hope to have it done before too long. In the video, I take you around to some of the “hotspots” and rooms that I think have activity. But not to worry; I did go to the famous Internet room 703! Within 703 there have been reports of poltergeist activity, including tappings and rappings on the wall, cold spots, and objects moving of their own accord. Witnesses have reported seeing a hazy face hovering in a dark corner of the room. I hope to have the video blog out, maybe, next month!

Rooms 703, 803, and 1003 are reputed to be the most haunted rooms in the Heathman Hotel. Paranormal events have been regularly reported in all three rooms and throughout the hotel, including cold spots, inexplicable sounds, and poltergeist activity. The mystery behind the rooms that end in 03 could be attributed to a suicide that may have taken place at the hotel. Sources: http://portland.heathmanhotel.com and www.hauntedrooms.com

Personal Experiences: Reader Encounters
The Mystery of the Mirror By Paulette Ballard
ave you ever received a beautiful gift for Christmas and later found out strange things happened around it? I don’t know if I’m a believer in the paranormal or not, but after I tell you what happened to me, you can decide if you believe it or not. It was Christmas Day 2010 and, as usual, our family was gathered around the Christmas tree to open our gifts. We open our gifts one at a time as we go around the room so everyone sees what they were given. It’s always a fun day for us and usually one of us has a surprise that is not under the tree. This year my surprise was a floorlength, oak swivel mirror. My father had found the mirror at a yard sale for $25. I looked it up on the Internet through some stores where I had seen these mirrors and it sold for $150 to $200. The oak around the mirror was in perfect condition, and I could hardly wait to take it home and put it in my bedroom. Shortly after taking the mirror home I began having a sensation of someone watching me as I slept. My husband made the comment, “Something woke me up last night, and I saw a white form at the end of the bed.” He discounted it and didn’t think much more about it until it happened again. We had a water pipe burst in our house, and our bedroom floor was flooded with water. I was sitting on the sofa in the living room watching television, and I thought I saw one of my shoes float past the door to the bedroom. I told my husband about it; he went to look and said there were no shoes on the floor. A few minutes later I saw a dark shadow go past the same door. We definitely were experiencing something unex-
plainable in our home. Nothing bad had happened to us, just unexplained “occurrences” of shadows resembling people. A couple across the street from us, Jim and Carol, invited us to play cards one evening. During conversation we mentioned some weird things happening in our house. Jim and Carol told us they were Wiccans, and they asked if we would let them walk through our home. We told them they could, and all of us walked to our house. They walked through our house and told us they sensed two spirits in the house. One spirit had a dark shadowy form, and it was not a good spirit. The other spirit was in a white form and was there to try to protect us from the bad spirit. They felt the mirror was possessed by the bad spirit, and it had entered our home using a portal from the mirror. According to Wiccan history, mirrors with a silver backing could be a portal for spirits to emerge from “the other side” into our world. They retrieved some items from their home and tried to cleanse our house using sage and some energy crystals. They indicated this was to try to weaken the evil spirit they were feeling. Jim and Carol suggested we destroy the mirror and have the house cleansed again. They took possession of the mirror, broke it, and burned the oak frame surrounding the mirror. After the mirror was destroyed, they came back to our house and burned sage inside the house to cleanse it, and then sprinkled it outside the perimeter of the house also. It has been a year since the burning of the mirror, and there have been no further unexplained happenings or “sightings” in our house.

Personal Experiences: Religion And The Paranormal
A Q&A With Christopher Brown By Chris Davis, Valley Ghost Hunting
his month I had the pleasure of talking with skeptic Christopher J. Brown. I first heard Christopher on a radio show on www.ZtalkRadio.com. I was quite interested in what he had to say, as well as his thoughts on science and religion. Chris also hosts his own podcast, called Meet The Skeptics! By Christopher Brown, where he has interviewed guests like James Randi, Micheal Shermer, Blake Smith, and Brian Brushwood (www. meettheskeptics.com). Christopher recently answered questions that I sent him on religion and the paranormal. I hope you enjoy this question and answer article.
ator and mastermind of the world is an easy answer to the question, “Why are we here?” People came up with their own version that fit their cultural beliefs and developed stories around it to further explain our world. Q. Do you believe in anything paranormal that is unrelated to religion, e.g., psychokinesis, telepathy, UFO phenomena? Chris: No. Q. Why don’t you believe in the paranormal? Chris: I have yet to see evidence that is convincing. I do personally know many mentalists, “psychic entertainers,” and magicians, all of whom can generally duplicate most of the supposedly paranormal feats accomplished by people who claim supernatural abilities.
***** Q: Establish your belief in God. Explain to me the strength of your belief in God?
Q. Have you had any paranormal experiences? If yes, please explain.
Chris: I do not believe in God as he/she/it is popularly defined. Q: Why don’t you believe in God?
Skeptic Christopher Brown hosts his own podcast, called Meet The Skeptics! Chris says he has yet to see evidence of the paranormal that is convincing.
Chris: The idea of God is clearly a common one, but notice that in various parts of the world people have very different conceptions of what God really is. Since the beginning of time, there have been several thousand iterations of God, gods, goddesses, and other superhuman beings. Most modern people believe in just one of them. To me, it makes far more sense that the idea of a cre-
Chris: Sort of, but I see them as coincidental. I have had dreams that later came true.
Q. Do you feel that less and less people are believing in God? Chris: It does seem that way, yes. Q. Statistics show that less and less people are believing in God. Why do you think this is?
Paranormal Underground 53
Personal Experiences: Religion And The Paranormal Chris: For many years, expressing disbelief in God would result in a far diminished quality of life. Family would ostracize you, the community would no longer trust you, etc. It’s extremely difficult to openly admit a lack of belief under such circumstances. Disbelievers stayed in the closet, so the impression was that everyone believed in God. When you have the appearance of unanimity, most people won’t question the consensus. This created a sort of snowball effect. People didn’t admit disbelief, so other people didn’t think to doubt, which further enforced the appearance of 100% belief that caused the disbelievers to stay quiet in the first place. With the advent of the Internet, people are finally able to reach out to like-minded people and form a community of similar non-believers, thereby giving others reason to re-examine their own beliefs.
Chris: I don’t think so. If anything, I think a belief in the paranormal would make someone more likely to believe in God.
Q. Do you think there is an increase of belief and attention within the paranormal?
Q. Do you think people need something to believe in?
Chris: There may be more attention, but I’m not sure whether belief is on the rise. Shows like Ghost Hunters have popularized it more. Let’s face it, paranormal things are pretty fun to consider.
Chris: To a certain extent, yes. It’s difficult for anyone to take “we don’t know” as a reasonable answer. The concept of God or belief in aliens or Bigfoot provide answers.
Q. Do you think that the reason why people believe less in God could in any way be due to an increase in the paranormal?
Q. Do you think that the reason why people believe less in God could in any way be due to science and technology? Chris: Yes. The more science is able to explain, the less God seems necessary as an explanation. It would follow that people would gradually believe less as they learned more science.
Paranormal things are pretty fun to consider.
Q. Do you think people are now more rational?
Chris: No. People are not rational, but we are good at rationalizing. In other words, people are very good at believing in rather silly things while coming up with very impressive explanations as to why it’s not so silly.
Q. Are you superstitious?
Q. Do you believe in predestination? Chris: No. Q. Have you been raised a Christian or ever been to church? Chris: Yes. I was raised Catholic, went to church weekly, and attended Catholic schools from Grade 1–12. Q. Do you think your educational background, i.e., medicine and/or math, has influenced your beliefs in the paranormal and religion? Chris: Yes. A better grasp of science and mathematics (statistics and probability) have helped me to understand the world and universe in a way that no longer requires God to answer questions. Similarly, I have seen a lot of paranormal research that used highly flawed methodology in order to arrive at positive results. Having a decent grasp on what constitutes valid research has helped me better understand these things.

Paranormal Underground 55
Delves Into the World of Greek Mythology By Michelle M. Pillow, www.MichellePillow.com
aranormal romance and urban fantasy author Johanna Garth is a lawyer turned writer, lover of social media, and chief boo-boo kisser to Child 1 and 2, who make regular appearances on her blog, Losing Sanity. She lives in Portland, Oregon, and can assure you that every episode of Portlandia is based on fact. Her first novel, Losing Beauty, released May 2011, and the second, Losing Hope, released May 2012. Both are in e-book and print at Amazon and Barnes & Noble. ***** Q: In your book, Losing Beauty, you delve into the world of Greek mythology. Persephone compels everyone she meets to confess their darkest secrets. What inspired you to create such a character?
Q: When world building, did you base your story off of known myths throughout history?
Johanna: Losing Beauty is set in present day and is a modern take on the myth of Hades and Persephone, written from Persephone’s perspective. I wanted Persey to be relatable, the kind of heroine who experiences great emotional growth throughout the series. Her world starts out the same as yours and mine. It isn’t until late in the book that she visits the Underworld. Her struggle is to find the right balance between the two worlds. She desperately wants to stay in the world of the living with the man she loves, but she’s terrified of what might happen to her loved ones in the Underworld “I think most of us are fascinated by Inner if she doesn’t succumb to Haden’s conflict. When a human turns into a vampire, do they mourn their loss of humanity?” demands.
Johanna: As a lawyer, I’ve always found the concept of confession fascinating. What compels people to set aside self-interest and admit to something like murder or robbery? Of course, not everyone admits to their darkest deeds. This made me wonder what it would be like to meet a person who could extract the kinds of secrets people don’t usually volunteer, a sort of human truth serum. In the context of my heroine, Persephone, I wondered how she would interact
with Haden, who is the lord of the Underworld and, as such, has many dark secrets.
Q: What myths or legends inspire you? Johanna: I love Greek mythology, and it gave me a jumping off point for Losing Beauty. In general, the myths and legends that hold the most fascination for me are
ones with strong characters and personal conflicts. The character piece, what makes people (or creatures) tick is almost if not more interesting than their individual skills. I think most of us are fascinated by inner conflict. When a human turns into a vampire, do they mourn their loss of humanity? When Persephone discovers what she must do, will she accept her responsibilities or reject them? Q: Why do you think readers, and society in general, are fascinated by the paranormal?
I write for the same reason I breathe. It’s not a choice; it’s a physical need
Johanna: In a world where any sports score, song lyric, movie title, or quote can be fact-checked with a few clicks of a mouse, the paranormal offers up something unique. We can debate it, think about it, and are drawn to it because paranormal elements and creatures aren’t cold hard facts. They live at the edges of every culture and call to our imagination and curiosity. Q: What are your favorite paranormal movies and books? Johanna: This is one of those questions that I’ll answer and then, as soon as I do, I’ll remember my all-time favorite that was inevitably omitted. Instead of giving you my favorites, I’ll give you my recents. The last paranormal book I read was The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. I love, love, loved it! The last paranormal movie I saw was Ghostbusters with my kids. Good times with the Keymaster and Pillsbury Dough Boy. Q: Do you believe in the supernatural? Johanna: I believe inexplicable things happen. Maybe the explanations for why those things happen are scientific and we don’t know enough to understand what we see. Or maybe
the explanations are supernatural and we refuse to believe what the hairs on the back of our neck tell us. Until someone proves the truth of one explanation over the other, I’ll keep an open mind. Q: Have you ever had a paranormal experience?
Johanna: Just once, and it was when I was a baby. My mother’s favorite aunt died three days before I was born. After my mother took me home from the hospital she felt compelled, almost called, to return to the old farm house where my aunt lived. One afternoon my mother drove out to the house, which was situated by itself in the country. When she pulled up in the driveway she could see lights on upstairs. She assumed children were playing inside and went in to investigate. At this point in the story I always used to ask her, “But weren’t you scared? And why did you leave me alone in the car?” She always said it never occurred to her to be frightened and I was asleep so what would be the point of waking me up. Inside the house she could hear noises upstairs. But when she went upstairs, the noises sounded like they were coming from the basement. She went to the basement and the noises sounded like they were coming from somewhere else. Eventually, she remembered she’d left her infant (me) alone in the car and ran back outside. I was still asleep when she found me, except someone had pulled away the swaddling blankets so my entire face and body were visible. My mother said she felt a presence nearby, as though someone was watching her. She believes the spirit of my great-aunt called her back to the house. My great-aunt loved babies. Maybe she needed to meet the newest addition to the family before she could be at peace. Or maybe, I just wriggled my way out of the tightly
Paranormal Underground 57
Author Spotlight wrapped blankets. It’s hard to know for sure. The one thing we do know is that after that day, my mother never felt the need to return to the old farm house again. Q: What kind of paranormal creatures do you wish you could meet?
I’m too superstitious to put something like that in writing.
Johanna: I’m too superstitious to put something like that in writing. What if they do exist? And what if one of them read this article and decides to grant my wish? I think this is exactly the kind of information I need to keep to myself. *smile* Q: If given the chance, would you become a mythological figure?
Johanna: I think I’d be Artemis, the goddess of the hunt. Not because I love to hunt, but because she has a bow and arrow. I’ve never been a natural athlete, but when it comes to archery, I can almost always hit a bull’s eye. And, if you’re going to be a mythological figure, you should probably focus on your strengths! Those gods can play rough!! Q: How would you react if you came face to face with the lord of the Underworld? Johanna: In Losing Beauty, Haden is more than just the lord of the Underworld. He tells Persey that every culture, every time, every religion has its name for him — Satan, Lucifer, the Devil, the Dark Lord, the Grim Reaper. He walks through our world, and most people never know his true identity. The point is, maybe I’ve already come face to face with the lord of the Underworld and I just didn’t know it. Maybe, you have too.
Johanna: I have a friend who does tarot card readings. She refuses to read my cards, because she worries about seeing something bad. She doesn’t want to have to deliver bad news to a good friend. I take my cues from her. If I’m going to be hit by a bus tomorrow, I’d prefer not to know about it today. Q: Have you ever been abducted by aliens?
Q: Why do you write paranormal romance? Johanna: I write for the same reason I breathe. It’s not a choice; it’s a physical need. There may come a time when I feel like I’ve said everything I have to say about the paranormal and move on to another genre. Although, given the breadth of material and my ongoing fascination with the subject, I’d say the chances of that happening are slim.
Johanna: One of my beta readers compares the Persephone Campbell series to Star Wars. She says that Losing Hope is the Empire Strikes Back of the series. That means Persey is going to come to terms with who she is and what is
Q: Have you ever been to a psychic and/or a pastlife regression? What did they predict for you?
Johanna: If I have, they’ve completely erased my memory of the experience.
Q: What does the future hold for Persephone?
expected of her. She will have to make choices, and those choices will become increasingly difficult. The good news is Persey is quietly discovering her inner strength. Even though the second book takes her to a very dark place, it also gives her the depth of character she will need to find her way in the final book. The overwhelming feedback I receive from readers of Losing Beauty is they relate to Persey. I think this is because Persey is all alone and searching for her place in the world. At its core, Losing Beauty is a coming of age story. We all know what it feels like to search for our place in the world and the difficulties that journey can present.

Paranormal Perspective: Guest Editorial
History and the Paranormal: A Working Relationship By Mike Ricksecker, Society of the Haunted
istory and the paranormal go hand-in-hand. After all, the lives ghosts lived on Earth are in the past. Their stories permeate the walls of the locations in which they haunt and they appear, at times, in the evidence paranormal investigators pick up in their ghost hunts. So much is forgotten and overlooked over the course of time that what truly happened can become utterly distorted. Historic research can be used as a valuable tool while investigating the paranormal, and can also help us to understand the lives of those who may be haunting a location.
matter. When it became clear that his daughter could not stop thinking of the young man, Benedict sent Ariana to Annapolis to live with her sisters and find a new suitor there. However, when new suitors came to call in Annapolis, Ariana refused every single one, and the girl’s health began to fade and break down from depression. When her father died, her mother took pity and finally gave consent for Ariana’s engagement to her true love. Unfortunately, it was too late and Ariana Calvert died before she could be wed. Tragic though this tale is, it is much more engaging than a simple statement that the mansion contains the spirit of a “forlorn girl in white who pines for her forbidden lover.” Real history is about the people who lived through it, and their stories have depth.
historic research can aid in verifying or disproving the legends of a haunted location.
Real History Provides More Depth to a Case File When researching the Mount Airy Mansion for the book Ghosts of Maryland, I stumbled across a single line account of the ghost of a young woman who would appear in the home mourning the loss of her love. I was curious to know more about this young woman’s tale and continued to search through modern resources. However, I only continued to find the one line. This was troublesome. Surely, there was more to the tale, as the account had to have originated from some greater family history. Finally, when I dug further into older texts I discovered a book from 1914 titled Colonial Mansions of Maryland and Delaware, and I picked up the trail of a Miss Ariana Calvert. In the late 1700s, young Ariana had a suitor of whom her father, Benedict, did not approve. Benedict banned Ariana from seeing the young man, but the girl patiently waited for her father’s heart to soften on the
How Historic Research Can Help an Investigation Historic research can also aid in verifying or disproving the legends of a haunted location. The historic Skirvin Hotel in downtown Oklahoma City is most known for the spirit of “Effie,” presumably a chambermaid who had a love child with owner W.B. Skirvin. She was said to have fallen victim to depression and jumped from a top story window with the baby to their deaths. The hotel is certainly haunted with phantom maids’ carts rattling down the hallways, bathroom doors slamming shut on their own, and the apparitions of early Twentieth Century hotel personnel seen on many occasions. Even professional basketball players from the
New York Knicks were scared out of their rooms in 2010. However, there is no record of an Effie having ever worked at the hotel, nor is there a record of any woman jumping from the building with a baby. On the surface, one may ask if Effie’s story is really true. But the better question is, how did her legend come to be? Part of understanding the Skirvin legend is understanding that the hotel once only stood at 10 floors and not the current 14. Effie’s story takes place in the early 1900s from the top floor window, which would have been the tenth floor at the time. It was in 1930 when the hotel went through a number of renovations, including raising the height. Utilizing the archives of The Oklahoman newspaper, interesting articles about the Skirvin were brought to light. In 1932, in the only record of someone jumping from the hotel, a salesman from Dallas committed suicide by plunging to his death from a tenth-floor window. In 1939, a drunk 20-year-old woman from Nashville, Tennessee, almost dove out of her eighthstory window, but she was caught by the house officer just in time. Over time, it’s easy to mesh some of these details between the top floor and tenth floor, exchanging the salesman for the 20-year-old woman, and then mix in
the reports of phantom maid cart sounds, disembodied female voices, the occasional cry of a baby upon the night air, and even a couple of guests who claimed the form of a female body joined them in the shower. At this point, the likelihood that Effie truly existed is remote, but it is through her legend that the Skirvin Hotel’s real history has been researched, revealing a plethora of dark events. The suicidal salesman and drunk 20-year-old do not stand alone. Likewise, while researching Ariana Calvert’s story other tales that included George Washington, an oil lamp accident on the stairs, and a spectral horseman were discovered. More is sure to be revealed as deeper historic research continues. How to Apply Historical Information to a Paranormal Investigation From a paranormal perspective, this is all valuable information. Investigators can better devise their questioning during EVP sessions, and information that is discovered during investigations may better complement the true story rather than a false one. This relationship between history and the paranormal is quite important when uncovering the hidden truths of those that came before us, whether it be a legend in Oklahoma or a colonial tragedy in Maryland.

Paranormal Activity: Event Spotlight
Paradigm Symposium By Jenny Gurney, Proximity Paranormal
aradigm Symposium was a oneof-a-kind of event that was held in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on October 18th through the 21st at the Double Tree Hotel. This event was planned by Micah Hanks and Scotty and Raini Roberts, with a lot of help from others. This year’s theme was ancient topics, like ancient aliens. Scotty Roberts said this event was “the most eclectic blend of esoteric minds in the ancient alien, archaeological, anthropological, and cosmological fields.” The honoree guests that came to speak at this event were Erich Von Daniken, George Noory, the late Philip Coppens, Giorgio A. Tsoukalos, Dr. John Ward, John Ventre, Laird Scranton, Marie D. Jones, Larry Flaxman, David Weatherly, Paul Von Ward, Dan Madsen, Dr. John DeSalvo, Anthony F. Sancez, Ian Punnett, and the keynote Speaker Linda Moulton Howe. Each speaker, including Scotty Roberts and Micah Hanks, brought a different view on different topics. Thursday consisted of the opening ceremony, a performance by ancient Middle Eastern dancers, and Mike Brody doing some comedy for the attendees. Also keynote speaker Linda Moulton Howe spoke about Gobekli Tepe, the12,000-Year-Old Enigma Challenges Archaeological Paradigm. After the Keynote address, everyone met downstairs by the restaurant and bar for a meet and greet with the speakers who were at the hotel that night.
Friday and Sunday were filled with lectures from most of the speakers. Friday was the main ancient aliens daylong event. Giorgio Tsoukalos, Erich Von Daniken, and Philip Coppens did a special Ancient Aliens presentation. This presentation also included a question and answer portion. Also on Friday, Dr. John Ward spoke about his adventures in Egypt. Everyone enjoyed that lecture because not many people have been able to do what Dr. Ward has done there. There was one lecture on Sunday that was different than any of the other lectures given over the weekend. That lecture was the one given by Dan Madsen. His lecture was titled, “Publishing Star Trek, Star Wars, and Lord of the Rings.” The room was filled for this different topic. Sunday was the last day of the event and had the last batch of the lectures. Sunday was a day of laughter, and a few of the attendees started creating memes of Dr. John Ward. When one would pop up, we all laughed, including Dr. John Ward. He also trended on Twitter as the top lecturer at the Paradigm Symposium. Saturday was the biggest action-packed day of the weekend events. Saturday consisted of lectures, book signings, a VIP cocktail hour, and the VIP dinner. George Noory from Coast to Coast, Marie D. Jones, and Larry Flaxman, along with Erich Von Daniken, David Weatherly, and John Ventre, all spoke to a large group of attendees.
Erich Von Daniken and George Noory held a book signing. And attendees could stay for the VIP private cocktail party after the lectures if they bought the “Biggest ticket.” During this time, the guests and the attendees could interact with each other and have a glass or two of a drink of their choosing. After the VIP private cocktail party, attendees and honorary guests were ushered into the main ballroom for the VIP dinner. The hotel offered several different options of meat and sides for the dinner, as well as a few choices for desert. Mine was the chocolate and white layered cake. After most of the speakers were done eating, they joined Ian Punnett, from Coast to Coast, on stage for a panel. During this panel, Ian had several questions for each of the guests to answer, bringing different viewpoints to the attendees. After the event, Scotty and Micah received wonderful feedback about the event. One event review cited: “Everyone was so approachable and
seemed like they were enjoying it as much as we were. Again, thanks for all the hard work you and Micah did to put on a superior event.” Another review from Matt Oakley said, “Words cannot describe how ... changed my life has become due to the events that transpired at this year’s Paradigm Symposium. I am eternally grateful to the attendees, as well as those involved.” I personally have to agree with both of these reviews of the event. I was honored to help Scotty, Raini, and Micah at this event, even when they didn’t ask; I just jumped in and helped. I made so many new friends that weekend that will last a lifetime. Paradigm Symposium 2013 is officially booked at the Hilton Double Tree Park Place in Minneapolis, MN, for October 17-20, 2013. Watch the Website for even more details at www.paradigmsymposium.com. Contact Scotty Roberts if you are interested in obtaining tickets for Paradigm Symposium 2013.

Moonlight & Magic “Santa’s Workshop” By Jenny Gurney, Proximity Paranormal
oonlight & Magic “Santa’s Workshop” was a holiday shopping event, but with a holistic fair spin. The event had jewelry, crystals, chocolatiers, wine tasting, soaps, psychics, mediums, tarot, spiritual healers, energy workers, shiatsu massage, and much more. There was even a Santa that you could take photos with! This holiday event was held at the Sheraton Minneapolis Hotel on December 9th. This event was welcomed by Mother Nature dropping six inches to one foot of snow in the St. Paul area. And while the weather kept some people at home, many still attended the event and had a blast with each other and the attendees who did attend. The event center was decorated as a Santa’s workshop. It made the environment more cozy and helped spread holiday cheer. There were four Christmas trees fully decorated that you could bid on and win, and the buyer could decide what charity to donate that money to for the holidays. Psychic mediums Scotty Rorek, Abby Rose Newman, Alison James, and Debra Battenfeld, as well as other talented psychics and mediums, were there to provide their services during the day. Scotty and his wife also had handmade jewelry for attendees to buy, including pedants, necklaces, and earrings with genuine gemstones. Dawn Marian, a Reiki master, healer, and teacher was at the event giving free Reiki treatments for attendees. Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by “laying on of hands” and is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. There were also massage therapists, a Hmong Shaman, chocolatiers, and many more vendors at this event. One such vendor was Abby Rose Newman, a psychic
medium. Abby does something very unique while she gives you your reading; she draws what comes to her during the time. While Abby is sketching, faces can appear and disappear and images morph and change. “I work in layers using different medias, painting, drawing, and sketching. The images build layer upon layer until I hear a whisper in my mind or get a feeling of what the image is,” Abby said. “I can queue into it, adding the last touches to the finished image. Oftentimes, someone else can see other things in the art piece that I didn’t even realize that I had drawn. I believe healing takes place in the creative process. When I step back and see something at a different angle, I know the healing has happened. “What is right in front of you takes time to understand, and it is the joy that fills my heart when I can help another see what it is beyond a piece of physical paper. Art is feeling. It is an in-depth creation from the heart. When drawing, spontaneous marks create an automatic response to the image. Connecting the dots is my skill. I believe in random chance, it is to be that way, as all things are connected and these reasons cannot be explained.” After the main event, there was a special event, called “The Charmed Ones, A Medium Gathering.” This medium gathering had three of the best mediums from the state, Alison James, Scotty Rorek, and Debra Battenfeld. Even though the weather kept many people from attending this amazing holiday event, it was one of the best holistic fairs I have been to in a long time. Vendors and staff were even dressed up to make the experience special for everyone who attended. Everyone felt welcomed, and I loved attending this event. The Escape By Ryan Tackitt, Paranormal Investigators of Central Texas
Are we there yet?” Richie whined. “I don’t know. We’ll get there when we get there,” Jimmy answered. Bobby chuckled, “Are you getting scared yet, Richie?” “No, just shut up and let’s get this over with,” Richie replied. The three boys quickly trotted up the path. Just on the other side of the break in the trees stood an old abandoned house, an ancient mansion that sat on the property for close to 200 years. It belonged to James McCormick, former owner of McCormick mines, which closed down due to an unexplained explosion in 1923. Now, the derelict mansion was only visited by teenagers looking to prank younger kids. It was a rite of passage for kids to prove how brave they were by staying in the house all night. Most didn’t even make it to the front door before turning around and fleeing in fright. The house had an eerie sense of being haunted. For decades, kids relayed chilling stories of ghosts roaming the hallways looking for victims to drag into the basement. Despite all of this, no one had ever been reported missing from the area. ***** Tonight, dark clouds passed in front of the full moon, adding suspense to the atmosphere. The boys wished the house didn’t look so eerie. Finally, as the house came into full view, the moon’s sharp outline of the house almost made it glow. All three boys stopped and stared for what felt like
eternity. Bobby was the one to get the group moving again. Richie trailed behind just a few steps; he didn’t want the others to see the fear on his face. The boys walked up onto the porch and stopped at the door. Each looked at the other to see who would try the door knob. Jimmy finally took the handle in his hand, all the while hoping it was locked. The knob was cold and dusty, but it turned smoothly in Jimmy’s hand. The house seemed to be waiting for them. Pushing the door open was another matter. Jimmy had to thrust his shoulder into the door to get it to move. Leaves rustled from inside as the door swung open, and Jimmy carefully peeked his head inside and took a look around. As the three boys slowly walked into the foyer area, each pulled out their flashlight and clicked them on. A
grandfather clock stood to one side; its last chime having been heard decades ago. An old painting hung on the wall above a broken table, but it was hard to make out a face on the dusty canvas. The three adventurers walked on into the main room. The hardwood floor was dusty, and only prints of small rodents could be seen. No other human had stepped foot inside the creepy, old house in a very long time. ***** At the same time, all three sets of eyes fell upon the stairs. The staircase rose up with the majestic glory of days past. The three boys could imagine people dressed up for balls and other celebrations coming down the stairs as awaiting guests stared up at them. The boys began the long climb up, taking one step at a time, waiting for the creaks and moans that didn’t come. And as they came to the second floor, the friends looked around with wide eyes. All the rooms were in shambles and evidence of animal nests from the winter seasons were present. The trio spent little time searching the rooms before they realized they needed to continue upward. Richie inhaled deeply and took the first step. Bobby and Jimmy
“Let’s open this chest so we can get outta here!” followed hesitantly. They were ready to start back down the stairs at the first sign of trouble. Reaching the landing of the third floor, the boys began looking around once more. They came to the last door on the east wing; Jimmy took the door handle and tried turning it. The big wooden door remained shut. Bobby looked around and found a small table that once held a vase. He picked it up and launched it at the door. The table bounced off the door but managed to open the door about an inch. Bobby picked up the table and threw it again and again. Finally, the door was open enough that they could squeeze through it.
Blocking the doorway was a four-poster bed. The boys looked around trying to figure out why it had been blocking the door. The window was still locked from the inside and intact. The other furniture was still in its regular place; a chair by the window and a large chest were by the closet. Bobby opened the closet half expecting a skeleton to pop out at him. Instead, his eyes settled on the chest. This might contain something worth showing off once they were out of the house, he thought. “Hey, Jimmy, doesn’t this house still belong to your family?” asked Richie. “Yeah, but no one has lived here since the explosion in 1923,” replied Jimmy. “What explosion?” said Bobby? “Back in 1923, there was an explosion and several people died. No cause was ever found. Then more people in town died from horrible burns, but they weren’t near the mine when it exploded. It was like something burned them from the inside out. My great-great grandfather was the last to die here in the house. The deaths stopped after he died. A lot of people thought he had something to do with it since he wasn’t burned,” Jimmy said in a low voice. Jimmy found a place to sit down to finish the tale. He knew the others didn’t know about the story since they weren’t born in town. He had heard it so many times growing up, but he never had the chance to tell anyone until now.

Some of the families sued my great grandparents for the deaths, so they didn’t have any more money to re-open the mine. It’s remained closed ever since then. It’s too dangerous for anyone to enter. “My family left the house as it stands and no one ever moved in. Matter of fact, I don’t think anyone ever come into this room since that day my great-great grandfather died; he was in the hallway outside this room. His grave is still outside in the family plot. He was the last to be buried there.” Jimmy finished his story and took a breath. His asthma was starting to act up, and he didn’t know if it was from the excitement or the dust. He took a puff of his inhaler and waited. The silence became unbearable and Richie was the first to break it. “Come on, then. Let’s open this chest so we can get outta here,” Richie said. “You got the key idiot?” asked Bobby. “No. Look around and see if you can find anything to open it with,” Richie ordered. Bobby looked around the room but didn’t see anything. He quietly walked out of the room and came back a few minutes later with a hammer. Bobby began hitting the old lock with the hammer. After a dozen or so hits, the lock fell off the clasp.
***** All three boys huddled around the chest, peeking inside as they slowly opened the lid. Within the dark chest was a small wooden box with strange carvings and glyphs on it. Jimmy reached inside and picked up the box. It felt light and very cold despite the warm room. He handed it to Bobby. Bobby sat on the chair and placed the box in his lap. He studied it closer with his flashlight. There was no lock or anything on it, but he was still suspicious about opening it. Finally, he lifted the lid; a brief electrical charge hit him like a static shock. He recovered quickly, and the boys looked inside the box. Nestled on a purple velvet pillow sat a small glass bottle with a wooden cork plugging the opening. Inside the bottle looked like a blue fog swirling about. Bobby reached carefully and picked it up. He was expecting another shock but it never came. The boys sat there staring at it for several minutes when, suddenly, the lid on the chest slammed shut and a loud, booming voice cried out, “Run for your lives!” The boys didn’t have to be asked twice; they bolted out of the room as quickly as their legs would go. Bobby was last out the door with the corked bottle still in his hand. Richie and Jimmy were already down the stairs and out the door just as Bobby reached the last step. In his haste, he missed the step, causing him to stumble to his knees. The bottle flew down to the hard, dirty floor, breaking on impact — the blue fog disappearing into the air. Bobby gasped for a breath and got up to continue running. He remained several yards behind the others as they all ran from the property. Inside Bobby, the demon took residence. It had waited a long time to be free and finish his business that stopped abruptly decades ago. Surely no one would know how to recapture him; that secret died with the last man that tried. But just to be on the safe side, he’d bid his time a little longer. It rested and thought about what it was going to do this time — after all, the mine explosion was not much of a challenge. Something bigger and better would come to mind.
