“When dawn came again to west Philadelphia, it seemed that even the skies mourned. The blue skies of May 13 had given way to dark, low clouds. The late spring warmth of the day before had turned thick and oppressive. In the gray light of dawn, scattered firefighters stood among the ruins, playing water across still smoldering debris. Amid the rising steam and smoke, crumbling structures emerged from the darkness—the fire walls that had once separated the homes on this street. They were the only thing left standing in the rubble.”
