With over 1,400 participants attending, the event includes inspirational speakers, performers and an award ceremony where recipients win bursaries to be used towards their education. Hugo Pin, 18, was proud to win the W.A.V.E. Leadership Award in 2018, asserting the acknowledgment strengthened his efforts toward positively impacting society. “This award proves that youth have a voice,” he says. “No one is ever too young, nor too old, to create change.” Current candidates will be recognized at the 2019 Empowering Youth Day, which takes place May 8 at Toronto’s York Woods Theatre. Russo believes the event’s success is possible thanks to generous donations and hardworking volunteers like Rose Caliendo, who has worked with the charity since its inception. “If W.A.V.E. impacts just one student in the audience,” says Caliendo, “we know it’s worth it because it just takes one person at a time to make a positive difference.” The results have been overwhelming. Over 100,000 teachers and students have taken part in the program, which has expanded to encourage group efforts in the form of W.A.V.E. Youth Action Teams in schools. Supported by the charity, students who want to get involved can team up and take on a cause that impacts them. Through interactive workshops, Russo helps the youth groups create awareness and equip each other with tools to confront their issues, which range from cyber-bullying and screen addiction to drug abuse. At every appearance she makes, Russo says she’s always amazed at the feedback she gets from students, many of whom have shared their experiences with her. “They’re going through so much, so many different challenges. Many times a student will confide in me that their problems feel so big, but then they look at me and say, ‘You’re here, in a wheelchair, and you’re still smiling.’” She’s thrilled to be a source of inspiration, but it isn’t always easy. Many mornings she wakes up and wants to hop out of bed to start her busy day— then she remembers she has to wait for her aide to arrive. But Russo doesn’t surrender and is grateful to have incredible people in her life who have helped her along the way. “If it wasn’t for my family, for their love and support, I don’t think I could have gotten through this,” she says. “I focus on my blessings and not my losses.”

Russo afferma che il successo dell’evento è reso possibile grazie alle generose donazioni ed all’impegno di volontari come Rose Caliendo che lavora con l’organizzazione sin dal principio. “Se W.A.V.E. ha un impatto anche solo su uno tra gli studenti nel pubblico, sappiamo che allora ne vale la pena perché basta una persona alla volta per fare la differenza positivamente,” dice Caliendo. Il risultato è travolgente. Più di 100.000 insegnanti e studenti partecipano al programma che è stato esteso per incoraggiare le azioni di gruppo con il W.A.V.E. Youth Action Teams nelle scuole. Sostenuti dall’organizzazione benefica, gli studenti desiderosi di partecipare possono formare delle squadre e occuparsi di una causa che li riguarda. Attraverso seminari interattivi, Russo aiuta i gruppi giovanili a sensibilizzare ed a offrirsi a vicenda gli strumenti per affrontare i loro problemi, che spaziano dal cyber-bullismo e alla dipendenza da dispositivi elettronici all’abuso di droga. Ogni volta che appare in pubblico, Russo dice di rimanere sempre sbalordita dal riscontro che riceve dagli studenti, molti dei quali condividono con lei le proprie esperienze. “Affrontano molte cose, moltissimi tipi di difficoltà. Molte volte gli studenti mi confidano di considerare i loro problemi enormi ma poi mi guardano e dicono: ‘Tu sei qui, su una sedia a rotelle, e continui a sorridere.’ ” È entusiasta di essere una fonte d’ispirazione per i giovani, ma non è sempre facile. Molte mattine si sveglia e vorrebbe saltar fuori dal letto per cominciare la sua giornata piena di impegni – ma poi ricorda di dover aspettare l’arrivo della persona che l’aiuta. Ma Russo non si arrende ed è grata di avere nella sua vita persone incredibili che l’aiutano lungo il cammino. “Se non fosse per la mia famiglia, per il loro amore e sostegno, non penso sarei riuscita a superare tutto questo,” afferma. “Mi concentro su ciò che ho la fortuna di avere, piuttosto che su ciò che ho perso.”
