Injury is the leading killer of Canadian children and youth. 50% of all deaths from injury are from brain injuries.

30% of all traumatic brain injuries are sustained by children and youth, many of them while participating in sports and recreational activities.

Remember, most head injuries that occur while skating are not accidents, but predictable, preventable events. Be a role model! As parents, coaches and educators, it is important to model safe, responsible behaviours like wearing a properly fitted helmet during skating and other sporting activities.

We strongly recommend that everyone wear a helmet! If you forget your helmet, feel free to borrow one of ours. We have over 100 helmets in various styles and sizes to choose from.

Skating Tips!

Questions? Ask one of our knowledgeable skate attendants.

March before you glide. Ice marching can be a good precursor to skating because it helps beginner skaters gain balance and familiarity with the ice. Learn to stop. This is one of the most important ice skating tips for beginners. Many skaters start out learning maneuvers first, then learning to stop later.

Skating & Arena Activities Sarah Russell My name is Sarah Russell. I have been coaching skating lessons at Panorama for three years but have an extensive on ice background prior to this. I am a figure skater and have been involved in the sport competitively from a young age. Recently I have started speed skating, and I’m always ready to try something new on the ice. I’m now able to give back to my community by passing on the skills that have given me a great sense of happiness for many years.

When I am not coaching lessons I can be seen floating around at many of the drop in ice times such as the adult skate, Extreme teen skate or weekend Everyone Welcomes. One of my favourite things is to see people as their skating skills progress and they become more confident in their skating abilities. I look forward to seeing you on the ice soon!
