Newsletter summer 2013

Page 1

Hello everyone, We are just coming off a very successful June in which we held an almost 700 person weekend retreat for a large Calgary based energy company. With that fresh in our minds, we’re launching into summer mode with plenty of great changes and improvements in store, many of which are detailed more fully later on in the newsletter. Some of the high points for me are the new Kids Camps, launching of an Archery program, the additions to the Mountain Bike Park (yes, it is open 7 days a week this summer), freshly resurfaced tennis courts, and construction of a new Clubhouse out at Greywolf. If you were here in the winter, you may have noticed that the playground was not in its usual location near the Great Hall deck. We have relocated it to a new spot just outside the entrance of the Panorama Springs pools. All we need now is for the weather to cooperate. I hope you all have a fun and exciting summer season and Happy Canada Day to all. Bill Kirkpatrick - Director of Lodging

From our Bike Park Manager Dear Homeowners, I am very excited with my new role as the Bike Park Manager. The park presents itself with many fresh challenges. My self and the newly expanded trail crew have been hard at work for the past 4 weeks preparing the park for opening on June 28th. We are putting a great deal of love and attention into trails like Let it Ride and Rocking Horse so that they can be ridden with fun and confidence by all levels of riders.

In keeping with our vision to make the park more accessible we have constructed a new mountain bike Beginner Skills Park at the base of the carpets. This will be a great place for everyone to play on 2 wheels to improve your handling skills and confidence. Next to the skills area you will discover Panorama’s first ever Pump Track. A pump track is dirt track comprised of small rollers and bermed corners that once mastered allows you to harness momentum to “pump” your way around the track instead of pedaling. Great fun for all levels of riders.

As touched on by Bill this summer the chair lift will be open 7 days a week to allow daily access to hiking, sightseeing, and biking. The new pump track and skills area will be open to everyone and will not require a lift pass. Make sure to check out the website for more information. In preparation for the future chair lift and in keeping with our vision of becoming the number one family focused resort in North America, the mountain operations crew has been out surveying Ski Tip and Stringer. The purpose of these surveys is to plan and initiate the required summer grading to these trails, as well as, begin the installation of a new snow making system to enhance the winter experience.

Summer hasn’t even begun but I am planning for next winter already. Ski With the Pros will happening again next season and is scheduled for opening weekend, Dec. 6th. If you have not tried it yet it is a great way to kick start your season and meet some new friends- all abilities catered for!

Exciting times at Panorama. The team never rests. I look forward to seeing you around the resort this summer and welcome your feedback.

Best, Jason Simpson - Director of Snow School and Bike Park Manager

Save the Date! Homeowner Golf tournament - Thursday August 15, 2013

Preview your dinner banquet menu here. Please note: Credit card payments will be processed 7 days prior to the event on August 8th as this is when numbers need to be finalized with catering and Greywolf.

A message from the Greywolf Golf Course Valley Trail: For all that use the valley trail here in Panorama thank you for helping keep it so pristine and clean, it is great to see so many of you out keeping active.

Now that the golf season has picked up, I would like to remind you all to stay on the valley trail and off the cart paths on the golf course. Greywolf is private property, golfers only are allowed on the course due to liability issues (errant golf balls, carts ect.). Please abide by the signs where the valley trail and Greywolf cart paths intersect and all dogs must be on leash at all times. You will see some new signage in the next couple weeks reminding everyone to keep on the valley trail and away from the cart paths on the golf course.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Resurfacing tennis courts As some of you may have noticed the volleyball court has been resurrected after a vicious run off this spring did all but destroy it. Thanks to the combined effort of our grounds and maintenance teams it has been brought back to playability! Please feel free to borrow a volleyball from Picnic deli during the day or the T-bar during the evening and enjoy this refurbished amenity. Front desk will also have one available for use. Please be sure to leave the courts in better shape than you find them so all can enjoy a clean, enjoyable environment. Sean Wall -Director of Mountain Operations

Panorama's wildlife management program & reporting procedure As the weather now becomes warmer we start to see more wildlife near and in the village, the Safety Services team have had a great deal of success with our wildlife management over recent years which have kept the number of bears approaching the village relatively low. It is important that we continue to do this as a bear that becomes used to finding food in the village may then become a bear that will need to be destroyed by the conservation officer In order for us to continue with this success we would like your help with two really important things: •

The first is to make sure that any garbage is in bear proof bins, and not left lying around, make sure you clear up any food that may get dropped whilst eating outside.

•

The second is to report the wildlife sightings, so we can track the bear behavior near the village. This can be done by reporting your sighting to the Front Desk, if you see a bear acting aggressively or within the village, please make that clear and my team will immediately investigate.

We also see deer in the village over the summer; the deer sometimes see dogs as a threat, so please keep your dog on a lead and away from deer. If you need any further advice in relation to wildlife in the village please do not hesitate to get in contact with my team. This can be done through front desk. Nigel Perry - Panorama Safety Services Manager

Garbage Disposal Panorama Mountain Village has allowed owners to dispose of larger items in our oversize bins in the area behind the Fire Hall, across the street from the public disposal area near Corix Utilities. Items disposed of in this location must be placed in the appropriate bin; otherwise Panorama will be charged the general garbage fee which is much higher than specific item rates. We ask that appliances be placed in the appliance bin, electronics with electronics, wood in the appropriate to burn area, etc. Please remember that this area is not bear proof so food items must be placed elsewhere in an appropriate bear proof container. If we continue to pay high disposal rates because these larger waste items are not being placed in the appropriate bin, we would be forced to deny anyone not working for the resort access to this facility. If this happens, these items must be taken by the owner to the Windermere Landfill site. Please note that professional contractors working for owners should be taking their construction waste to the landfill in Windermere. Thanks for your assistance, Panorama’s Grounds and Maintenance Departments

What's happening on the Mountain •

The start of snowmaking expansion to Ski Tip and Stringer. We want to have the water pipe and the electrical infrastructure in this summer. This area will be a totally fan gun operation, ensuring this beginner area will be covered fast and efficient. This is preconstruction for the new lift going in the summer of 2014.

A new Cross Country trail will be built over in the Trappers area. This is a requirement for the Grizzly race, and will enhance the bike experience overall.

Construction will begin on the widening of Skyline, Rollercoaster, and Fritz to Old Timer corridor to accommodate the IPC downhill race in 2015. This new track will also open the door for other types of Downhill races. Some snowmaking additions will also be made to this course, but we are not sure of the timing for that. This or next summer.

Greys Restaurant open from Friday 7th June- They will be open from Tuesday to Saturday all summer, Take a look at their a la carte menu. The shuttle will be running between Panorama and Invermere this summer, 7 days a week.
