About the Park The City of Carthage, in partnership with Panola College, is working to raise $730,000 for the development of an all-inclusive intergenerational park that will foster connection, health and wellness, and educational advancement. This park will be designed with the seven principles of inclusive playground design and will be placed on 2.9 acres on Bird Drive across from Panola College in Carthage, Texas.

The project will begin with an all-abilities park area, a walking trail, exercise equipment, a pavilion, and an ADA accessible restroom. The park will provide truly inclusive spaces that promote participation, health activity, and social interaction and will be the only of its kind within 60 miles. It will serve our seven surrounding counties with a population of 368,430 (Panola, Gregg, Harrison, Marion, Nacogdoches, Rusk, and Shelby County).

Panola College Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) program will use the park as an extension of their classroom. OTA students, supported by faculty, will develop community programs within the park area. The programs will support individuals across the lifespan and will foster nature-based learning and health. Program ideas include outdoor yoga and tai chi classes for all ages, school-based outdoor learning adventures, nature based art, cultural awareness and self help parenting education programs.

The park will be the only National Demonstration Site in East Texas which will help other communities champion inclusive play environments with future research that will help inform and improve health across a variety of communities. It is the intent for this park project to be a resource for many Texas cities seeking guidance for how to revitalize their community.

THREE BAY SWINGSET PHASE I

The expression swing promotes intergenerational play as adults and children swing together.
