5th & 6th project meetings

Inside this issue: MEETINGS

From October 23 to 29 we carried out two more project meetings. We visited the Belgian partner school Sint Jan Berchmansschool in Viversel from 23 to 26 October and then the Italian school G. Borsi in Livorno from 26 to 29 October. Both meetings were very successful and we were all very busy carrying out the meetings‘ agendas. We had teaching sessions in both schools, planted a tree in the school gardens, met with the parents and enjoyed the students‘ performance in Belgium. Our meetings also included some visits to places of environmental interest in both countries. In Belgium we visited the ―Closing the circle project‖ which is a factory and a dump where the rubbish that can‘t be recycled is buried and energy is produced in the factory.

In Italy we visited the Museum of Natural History and the Aquarium of Livorno and we also experienced a nice walk along a protected natural area with pine trees, dunes and sand beaches in Cecina.

We would like to thank the Headteachers and teachers of both host schools who offered us a very warm and unforgettable hospitality.

Cooking for the climate In 6th grade we have cooking-classes at Sennels Skole. We learn about how to behave in the kitchen, about hygiene, how to cook etc. For the time being our big focus is – how can you cook for the climate?? What

difference does it make, if you use a lot of imported foods for your cooking? How long did your pizza (for instance) ―travel‖ if you look at, what you put on it? Instead of using locally grown vegetables and locally

produced meat? We plan with this in mind, looking at maps and figure out how much transportation is needed, if you do not take an environmental look at your cooking style.

First class at Sennels Pumpkin heads

The pupils in 5th grade have made pictures for The Green Wordbook in our art-class-lessons.

Our first class has been on an out day home at one of the boys from the class. They made a pumpkin head, they used as lanterns for Halloween.

The class has their Christianity hours worked with the story Noah´s Ark and the class has in this regard made Noah´s Ark out of a cardboard box. Noah and his wife and the animals were made out of carton.

Forest Animals Friday 4 November was the first class at Sennels School again on a day out. They were this time in the woods where they were at an orientation, race. The class should find its way through the woods using a map. During the trip they had to pass 10 items all of which contained questions about one of the forest animals: the squirrel.

Project meetings Of course we have to mention our Comenius project meeting in Belgium and Italy. We had a wonderful stay in both countries, learned a lot about some of their projects and environmental challenges, and had a great time teaching children there about our work with the ―Go green, go clean, act now‖ project.

2. We are going to produce the ―Green wordbook ― which will contain 52 environmental words in English as well as the languages spoken in the partner countries. There will also be a sentence in English for each word explaining the meaning of word and the illustrations will be made by the students.

6. Our students will write a story book in common. The story will have environmental content. The Cypriot students will begin the story, the Greeks will continue it and then the Italians, the Portuguese students,

The actions we will do:

We have to reduce the emission of CO2 because … Millions of people in the South are struck by climate changes: extreme heavy rains, extreme heath and dryness, poor harvest, floods, …

1. Again a car less on the street ! If we can, we will walk or take the bike instead of using the car. Our children will receive a plate to attach on the handle-bar of their bicycle, with the words

We want to do actions to increase pressure for an international climate agreement.

3. I drink tap water !

Our school has the ambition to become a ‗tap water only‘area as soon as possible. our

c. December: don‘t lay anything on the radiator ! d. January: wash your hands with cold water ! e. February: every day ―Thick Sweaters Day‖ !

h. June: the sun is shining, make profit of it, go outside !

We also try to avoid litter by reducing the amount of plastic bottles.

b. October: switch off all the electric machines completely (not stand-by)!

g. May: order in the refrigerator !

By stimulating the drinking of tap water, we try to reduce the transportation of water which includes less trains, trucks, refrigerators … which means less CO2 in the air‘.

a. September: the last one switches off the light before leaving the room !

f. March: is the heating on? Close all the windows and doors !

The South cannot be pay the bill for what the North has done to the climate. Therefore we have to act

CYPRUS: A’ ARARIPPOU PRIMARY SCHOOL Our school continues for the second year the Comenius program and many activities took place during the last 3 months:

1. The eco committee. Every class appointed their 2 representatives and so one committee was formed that manages the environmental issues of the school. Parents and teachers also take

place in this committee. The committee holds meetings frequently, decides serious problems that the school faces and takes the appropriate measures.

2. Litter Less project Our school has been for many years member of the European program ―Eco schools‖. This year the project we deal with is called ―Litter Less‖ and has the aim to find ways to diminish litter in school but at homes too. A short Action plan was pre-

pared and every class decided to accomplish at least one activity. The eco committee decided to make a competition between students. Students are motivated to bring their food in plastic boxes and their water in stainless steel bottles, so to di-

minish foil and other kind of wraps. We are very excited because children responded with happiness to this initiative.

Page 12

3. Recycle bins Paper recycled bins were put into every classroom. A national bank sponsored carton bins to all schools of Cyprus so students can recycle paper. The paper is collected and then is carried to the big recycled bins that there are outside of the school. Recycled bins for PMD and paper were also put in the yard but still we need more

effort for students to separate their litter properly.

Issue 4

Page 13

4. Our Green Word Book Students made several drawings for the illustration of the common environmental glossary. Our school had to draw pictures for the words Dam, De-

forestation, Earth, endemic species, Flora and Fauna. The drawings were really great!

5. Comenius Board Two of the big permanent boards in the hall of our school were decorated only with Comenius material. Photos from the trip to Belgium and Italy

were put on the one board and we still have your wishes from your last year visit to Cyprus in the flowers on the other board. Soon we‘ll install a cabinet were all Comenius products will be exposed.

May — June 2011 During the last two months of the previous school year, 2010—2011, we carried out some more activities. We participated in the Comenius Week 2011 and planted some flowers in the small school garden.

In May and June we collected a lot of vegetables from our vegetable garden. We made fresh salads and traditional Greek dishes with our tomatoes, cucumbers, courgettes and aubergines.

At the end of the school year, the students of the 1st grade acted a play, written by their teacher Mr. Ilias Trontsios, about the endangered species and in June we participated in the Schools‘ Eco festival in our Educational District.

New year activities Two of last year‘s activities are still in action this year. The eco patrol and the school garden. The sixth graders are responsible of advising the younger students to keep the school premises clean as well as to plant vegetables in the school garden. So, this year they planted some lettuce, broccoli and cauliflowers.

The fifth and sixth graders translated the words of the eco dictionary and they also illustrated words beginning with J, K and L.

The 5th and 6th grades had a visit to an environmental centre and learned a lot about solar and wind energy. We applied for the National eTwinning competion. This year we are going to work on the sea, energy and air pollution. We have merged our Comenius –etwinning project with the Eco projects of our Educational District.

Finally, we presented to our students the meetings in Belgium and Italy and we are now making the Christmas cards we are going to send to the partner schools.

Scuola secondaria di primo grado "G. Borsi", Livorno Project visits to Belgium and Italy 23-26 October 2011

Two new project visits for our “Go Green, Go Clean” people. We, the Italian delegation, enjoyed them so much and will keep very nice memories in our hearts. In Viversel, Flemish Belgium, we had the pleasure to show our students’ work on Tuscan’s Islands. By a Power Point presentation we took our pictures and information on typical plants and animals living there. The Belgian students talked to us and let us know all they know about Italy and its landmarks, including pasta, pizza and tiramisù! The meeting with teachers, students and community was really enjoyable.

Issue 4

Page 17

From Belgium to Italy It was also nice to take all together the same flight from Maastricht to Pisa. We, 22 teachers and headteachers jumped on the plane for another three-day adventure down to Italy. As we did in Belgium, we planted a new tree (evergreen oak) in our schoolyard, had lesson sections during school time and open our school to families and children for the purpose of learning each others. One classroom for each of the seven hosted Countries, a real

trip around Europe. In case you can’t go around visiting Europe, we’ll bring it to your home!

Of course all our students in the eight Countries involved in the ―Green‖ project will be keeping exchanging letters, postcards and e-mail contacts to keep in touch. Next work for the following months is a collection of science lessons - most of them were already held during our

visits - and an ecological storybook to develop all together, among the partner Countries. Ambitious project!

Hi everybody! Here we are again for another Comenius year! This is what we have been doing since the school year started in September: - Teachers‘ meetings in order to organize 2011/2012 activities; - School website and Comenius corner updating; - We joined the school‘s English Club and organized a Halloween Parade - ―The most ecological fancy dress‖. All the costumes were made out of recycled materials and old clothes; - We accepted a mobile phones company challenge to launch dozens of biodegradable balloons with environmental messages. We participated with 500 students. - We finished the environment wordlist and the drawings for the common wordbook; - We started the ―free garden plots‖ project. We selected the spots, gave them to the interested classes, wrote letters and e-mails to local institutions to ask for gardening tips, plants

At the beginning of the second school-year of our partnership (2011-2012), in our institution it was necessairy to renew the team of teachers because many of them changed their school. Before that, the coordinator made a dissemination at the staff council (6th of October), than at the meeting between parents, school administration and the major of Rediu commune on 9th of October 2011. With the help of our students, we realised a mini-shop of reused toys and books collected from them, hand-made artcrafts and other objects. With money received from their selling we want to help some students from disadvantaged families from both villages: Rediu and Horlesti. This action will continue till the Easter holiday 2012.
