Hospice launches new program to help those with lung disease
Dr. Sarah Phillips is the medical director at Hospice of the Panhandle. Dan (not his real name) was diagnosed last summer with advanced chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Although he had been struggling with the disease for years, his condition deteriorated, and he made the decision to call Hospice of the Panhandle. As a person who loved to travel, Dan wanted to visit his sister in Michigan. His hospice team helped him get ready for his trip, making sure that he had everything he needed. Team members worked with another hospice in Michigan to make sure that help was available to him while he was visiting his sister. While on the way home, Dan became extremely short of breath. He practiced the energy conservation techniques that the hospice nurse had taught him but he felt like he needed more help. Dan’s friend, who was traveling with him, called Dan’s hospice nurse. Over the next few hours, his nurse worked with a hospice close to where they had stopped to get Dan the assistance he needed. Together, the two hospices got his symptoms managed so that the next day he could continue home. Lung disease, which includes COPD, and can be known as emphysema or chronic bronchitis, is the 3rd leading cause of non-cancer related deaths in West Virginia. Symptoms often include chronic coughing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and in advanced stages this disease can greatly limit a person’s activity level and quality of life. Patients suffering from advanced COPD – like Dan - often have frequent visits to the emergency departments and/ or admissions to the hospital for shortness of breath, COPD exacerbations and pneumonia. Hospice of the Panhandle wants to pro-
vide community members who have advanced-stage lung disease a better way to manage their illness. Hospice has a new program, “Breathing Better,” that was launched in February. It is designed for those in the advanced stages of lung disease who want to remain comfortable and stay at home. These patients often experience shortness of breath when resting, may have anxiety related to their breathing issues, and have impaired quality of life as a result of their physical limitations. Breathing Better’s first patient has been admitted to the program! Breathing Better patients receive home visits by a “care team.” The nurse on the team monitors symptoms, medications and educates patients and families about what to do when symptoms flare up. The nurse also helps the patient put together an emergency plan to be implemented when symptoms are out of control. This plan is based on what has worked for the patient in the past and what support they have in the home. All Breathing Better patients are offered a consultation with an occupational/physical therapist so they can continue to participate in daily activities they enjoy. This might mean modifying the activity to align with abilities or learning energy conservation techniques to make the most of each day. Each patient is also offered consultation with a registered dietitian who helps him or her learn about the role that food plays in managing symptoms. The care team also includes home health aides, social workers, chaplains, volunteers and grief counselors. Each Breathing Better member receives a workbook that includes information about medications typically used to treat symptoms, a chart to track medications and refills, and a personalized emergency plan. Like other hospice services, Breathing Better is covered by Medicare, West Virginia Medicaid and most private insurance plans. Under the plan, patients are eligible to receive oxygen, medical supplies and medications related to lung disease. We are truly excited to offer this new program! WVU Medicine University Healthcare Announces Certified Nurses Day March 19 Martinsburg, W.Va. – March 19 is Certified Nurses Day, a special day of recognition and celebration for certified nurses around the world. WVU Medicine University Healthcare is joining this national celebration in recognizing all 106 certified nurses working at Berkeley Medical Center in Martinsburg and Jefferson Medical Center in Ranson. University Healthcare’s celebration will be held on Friday, March 17. “Certified Nurses Day is an opportunity to recognize these nurses for their professionalism, leadership and commitment to excellence in patient care,” stated WVU Medicine University Healthcare Vice President/Chief Nursing Officer Samantha Richards, MSN, MBA, RN. Board Certification of nurses plays an increasingly important role in the assurance of high standards of care for patients and their loved ones. Nursing, like health care in general, has become increasingly complex. While a registered nurse (RN) license provides entry to general nursing practice, the knowledge-intensive requirements of modern nursing require extensive education, as well as a strong personal commitment to excellence by the nurse. There are many nursing certification spe-
cialties such as medical-surgical, pediatric, pain management, cardiac vascular, obstetric, surgical, orthopedic, oncology, emergency nursing, critical care, case management and many others. Nursing certification bodies exist to serve the full range of specialized nursing care offered in the contemporary health care system. “Certification is a voluntary process which signifies that a nurse has developed specialty knowledge beyond the entry level,” Richards stated adding, “At WVU Medicine University Healthcare, we encourage national board certification for all our nurses.” WVU Medicine University Healthcare employs registered nurses with certifications in over 30 different medical specialties. National nurse-certifying bodies should be accredited by either the Accreditation Board for Specialty Nursing Certification (ABSNC) or the National Organization for Competence Assurance (NOCA), or both. “Knowledgeable nurses are better equipped to recognize problems and take appropriate actions, resulting in better patient care,” Richards said. “Please join University Healthcare and the nation’s national nursing certification organizations in honoring our hardworking, dedicated nurses for their professionalism and a job well done!”

Creekside Anglers 16th Annual Tyathon
The 16 Annual Creekside Anglers Tyathon will have the first of the 2017 events on Saturday, March 18, from 9:00 to 3:00 at the Ruritan facility in Bedington, WV which is along Highway 11 North of Martinsburg. For many years interested fly tyers and others who enjoy the fly fishing sport celebrate the sport by convening an open meeting of tyers and use the opportunity to demonstrate the skill and help those who wish to learn how to tie flies. The event is free to all and we encourage folks to come and join the group and perhaps gain interest in the fly fishing arts. However, many detailers advise drivers to have their vehicles waxed once every three months, or one time per season. Before waxing, the vehicle should be clean, dry and free of contaminants. Afterward, work in a shady area. Work carefully, but do not go so slowly that the wax dries too quickly. Do not apply the wax too heavily; a little goes a long way. Try to keep it even during application. Buff the wax with a microfiber towel when done.
