PAMBULA MERIMBULA GOLF QUARTERLY
PMGQ THE SAPPHIRE COAST GOLF LIFESTYLE
Well, hello again from heart of golf on the sunny Sapphire Coast of New South Wales and the Winter Edition of Pambula Merimbula Golf Quarterly. This 4th edition marks the end of our first year of publication and we have been enormously pleased by the reader response which has been matched by attendance figures with a 16-20% increase in visitor participation on the course compared with the 2016/17 season, and that is most encouraging. Thank you one and all. We are now in the thick of our major tournaments program and preparations for our flagship event, the 38th annual Sapphire Coast Week of Golf in October are well in hand – you can read more about that in this edition. Remember, accommodation in Merimbula may be tight during October this year, so please book your preferred “home away from home” early. We are surviving the drought in fine shape, thanks to our very talented Greens Staff and fabulous new irrigation system, and we can promise you an outstanding golfing experience! We were very pleased with the outcome of our first major tournament of the year, the Sapphire Coast Senior Amateur Event held in April. A 72 Hole Australian men’s Senior Ranking Event this tournament is a qualifying event for the NSW Senior Open and comprises two 36 Hole NSW Senior Order of Merit Events. Competitor feedback on the condition and presentation of our course was again outstanding and playing conditions were rated on a par with most of the major Sydney golf courses. Thank you, gentlemen for your support and your comments – we look forward to welcoming you back again next year. Thinking of going green this year? We have recently replaced our fleet of petrolengined carts with a fleet of brand new electric vehicles and are most impressed by their comfort and quietness. Hiring rates are most competitive, so keep that in mind when you next visit us. We’re sure you’ll be impressed. Our Reciprocal Benefit Agreement program continues to expanding and is an innovative alternative to traditional Reciprocal Rights arrangements. With a range of discounted packages and country membership opportunities also on offer, we are enthusiastically targeting the visitor/tourist market and we can help you tailor your golf program to best suit your own holiday arrangements. If you'd like to know more, ask your General Manager to call our GM on (02) 6495 6154 or email us at email@example.com – we’d love to talk to your club. Finally … if you do decide to join us for a game on the finest 27 hole golf course between Sydney and Melbourne and would like to give us some feedback on your experience, ask for me at reception and I’ll do my best to meet up with you.

Winner Rated by Golf Australia as #6 on the list of Australia's Top 100 "value for money" golf courses.
Tried Sunday Golf recently? The regular Sunday golf competition at Pambula Merimbula is a great way to enjoy competitive golf in a relaxed and friendly social environment. Most events are mixed/medley team or 4-Ball events although single events are regularly programmed too. You can enter through the online portal or by using the terminals at the Club itself. Shotgun starts at 10.00am are the norm and contribute to the festivities after the event – it’s a very pleasant change to finish in the clubhouse with the entire field in attendance and there’s a lot of fun involved. Don’t have a partner? Not to worry just put your name on the list and someone will pick you up and help to form a team – you’ll find it’s a great way to meet new people. And of course … visitors are always welcome.

Monthly 9-hole events Don’t have the time or energy for an 18-hole event? Never mind … the last Sunday of every month offers a 9-hole mixed event starting at 2.00pm! Cost of entry is $9 for members and $20 for visitors (inclusive of Green Fees). Come along and meet the people. Special Feature Event – The Old Course Challenge Pambula Merimbula wasn’t always a 27-hole golf course - the first competition was held on 15th May 1966 and featured a 9-hole sand green course. The 18 hole layout, featuring grass greens, was opened by the President of NSWGA on 13 May 1979. On Sunday August 12 this year we are going to briefly return to the 18-hole era and feature a Medley 4BBB competition over the original 18-hole layout. Watch the website for entry details, but put the date in your diary now and let’s make this a day to remember!
Around 2 decades ago, local Pambula resident and conservationist Alexandra Seddon, daughter of Baroness Majorie Elizabeth Mary Airth Graevenitz, generously donated 50 hectares of a 77 hectare parcel of land adjacent to Pambula Village. Encompassing farmland, wetlands, salt marsh and the old Pambula Racecourse, Alexandra had a vision of creating a unique conservation & natural parkland area.
And so 'Panboola' was born: "a conservation, restoration, educational and passive recreational and tourism project, embracing the history and diversity of the wetlands within the floodplains of Pambula." Fast forward to today and Panboola is managed by a committee of volunteers: The Pambula Wetlands and Heritage Project Inc. in conjunction with the Pambula Wetlands and Heritage Reserve Trust. Panboola is continually being rehabilitated with community assistance as a wetland for the purposes of nature conservation and for the enjoyment by walkers, cyclists, artists, photographers and visitors from near and far who frequent the many paths, bench seats and pretty areas to relax and enjoy the natural surroundings.
Panboola is a wonderful place to visit, the tiny seedlings planted over a dozen years ago by small armies of volunteers, now matured into tall trees and a bustling habitat filled with birds and wildlife. The remnants of the old racecourse are apparent, albeit slowly returning back to nature, with varieties of local flora swallowing the previously open views somewhat. The enthusiastic can walk or cycle around the original 1800m sandy track, now being used as a stomping ground for the many kangaroos who pop their heads up from breakfast to say gidday as you pass by. Hosting several small events each year, including an arts festival, Panboola is highly regarded by the local community as a meeting place, natural playground and a significant asset for now and for future generations to enjoy. The close proximity to town means it's only a short detour off the beaten track to feel a world away from the busyness of town and it's still just a quick nip to the shops for a coffee and a cake if you so desire. A real credit to the community, it's usual to find visitors from all around the world strolling around, cameras in hand, enjoying the subtle beauty of the wetlands, salt mash and it's many treasures. Be sure to find the time for a peaceful wander the next time you are in the vicinity!

Meet our PMGC superintendent Pat 'Wilso' Wilson.
What makes a great golf course? It's an easy question to ask, but not so easy to answer. A complex combination of vision, design and sheer hard work - and, importantly, a dedicated Greens Superintendent to oversee maintenance & ongoing improvements. PMGC is very lucky to have on board the absolute right man for the job in Pat or 'Wilso' as he is affectionately known around the club.
A Pambula boy, with a love of golf and golf courses, Pat completed his apprenticeship at PMGC in 2002, and by 2004, was selected to participate in "The Ohio Program", an international exchange program offering internships for Horticulture, Agriculture and Turf Grass. The Ohio Program's practical training led to Pat's first placement at the 36 hole Greg Norman designed Tiburon Golf Club in Florida, which had been ravaged by 6 hurricanes over a 10 week period - talk about intense on-the-job training! A subsequent placement saw Pat gain valuable experience at the Player Championship at Sawgrass, Jacksonville, with it's famous 17th Island Green. He then moved onto the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Virginia, and all the way to preparing for the President's Cup and keeping an eye on George Bush's golf green at the White House. We're certainly in good company with Wilso - his passion and dedication in creating and maintaining a superior golf course self-evident in the great conditions we get to enjoy here everyday ... without needing to travel halfway around the world or take on political life. And thank goodness for that my friends!

Wild Encounters Our Kangaroo & Wildlife Tour continues to attract rave reviews... BUT our tours are not just about the kangaroos – we never know who will show up on the day, but we've had a lot of special things to show visitors over the past 3 months. It's Twins! This breeding season on the course we had twin joey kangaroos raised by a very dedicated mother … it’s an exceedingly rare event, but we were lucky enough to have them on the course and posing for the occasional photograph.
The Blind Ol’ Man Wallaby. Among the colony of Swamp Wallabies living in the scrub on the Northern Boundary, is a wallaby of quite considerable age and almost completely blind. With his distinctive grey face and muzzle, the Ol' Man Wallaby lives in the general area of the 23rd tee and doesn't move far from there. Like his younger colleagues he's a real fan of banana skins and will also take a piece of muesli bar from the hand of passing golfers. He's a great favourite with the golfers and while he tends to prefer morning outings rather than afternoons when the tours operate, he enjoys saying hello to tour guests as well, if he's still awake. He's obviously been a bit of a lad during his younger days ... have a close look at the battle scars on his ears!
Echidnas. There have been a LOT of echidnas around the course this last few months – they amble across the fairways, oblivious to the passing golf traffic! Birds. Lots of birds around too – even the Currawongs are early this year. AND … (BREAKING NEWS) … our very popular Bower Bird is busy at work at present rebuilding his Bower in anticipation of the Spring mating season and a new group of ladies to admire his craftsmanship.
More than 800 kangaroos, plus birds, reptiles, flowers ... whatever you do, don't forget the camera. What will you spot on the tour?

The Joys of Irrigation Sadly, much of New South Wales is in the grip of an ongoing drought that has ravaged much of the countryside (and continues to do so). Merimbula Airport data for 2018 shows a total rainfall of 154mm against a long term average for the same period of 433mm. April figures for PMGC were particularly alarming, with only 0.2mm recorded on the course against a long-term April average of 23.6mm. Here at PMGC, we are surviving the drought in excellent shape thanks to our outstanding Ground Staff, a wonderful new course irrigation system and access to a generous supply of reclaimed water courtesy of our partnership with the Bega Valley Shire Council. Coping with the dry April saw a PMGC irrigation load of more than 21 million litres of reclaimed water and, since the new system was commissioned in September last year, we have utilised more than 150 million litres of reclaimed water. Largely funded by PMGC member contributions, but supported by important grants from the Bega Valley Shire Council and the NSW Government, the $1.3 million replacement of the course irrigation system was a huge undertaking and we are enormously appreciative of the support provided by both Local and State Governments. Importantly for the local community, the partnership between PMGC and the Shire Council has reduced effluent disposal by deep ocean outfall by more than 30% over the last 8 months. Truly an excellent example of cooperation between community bodies and government agencies.

Renovation Rewards BUNKER RENEWAL PROGRAM OK … bunker shots can faze the best of golfers and give mere mortal players nightmares, can’t they? The quality of the bunker has a large part to play in the success rate for most players, particularly following significant rain events. Following catastrophic storm damage in 2013, PMGC commenced a program to upgrade, refurbish and (in some cases) replace our bunkers. Phase 1 saw 41 of our 55 bunkers completely replaced. The process installed a hard liner consisting of a Kustom Bind resin adhesive finish over an aggregate base to prevent sand degradation, improve drainage and reduce maintenance costs. This proved an outstanding success - rain events in excess of 100mm have fallen since the installation and the bunkers have remained intact with zero washouts. Playing PMGC with bunkers labelled as G.U.R. is now mostly a thing of the past. During May this year, the remaining 14 old bunkers were assessed by Mr Darby Muller of Golf Shapes, a professional consultant retained to advise us on how best to approach the upgrading process. Based on Darby Muller’s assessment report, the PMGC Course Development Committee developed a Phase 2 program that proposed the refurbishment of 10 of the remaining bunkers and the replacement of 4 others with grass bunkers. Thanks to a very generous donation from a Club member, Phase 2 of the program will commence later this year. We really appreciate our donor’s generosity and look forward to the successful completion of this very large construction program.
Lighting the Way The Sapphire Coast is home to many icons and historic points of interest - and a good percentage of them are contained within beautiful Ben Boyd National Park. In particular, one walk is emerging as a stand-out and is fast becoming known as one of Australia's great coastal walks - "The Light to Light". Beginning at Boyds Tower, the impressive sandstone turret built by entrepreneur Benjamin Boyd in 1847 and taking you to stunning Green Cape Lighthouse, the 39km walk journeys you towards the Wilderness Coast, an untamed stretch of coastline spanning the far south coast and over the border into Victoria . Previously the domain of the highly organised camper and experienced bushwalker, the Light to Light walk now hosts a handful of small tour companies who turn the trip into a comfortable and somewhat luxurious adventure, requiring neither camp gear or hiking experience. Offering 3 course dinners, local seafood and accommodation (or complete camp set-ups), there's not much to worry about except toting your camera and few snacks while enjoying the walk to camp, only to be greeted with nibbles and a glass of wine on arrival! Don't know about you, but that's our kind of "roughing it"... So little wonder the tours are drawing rave reviews ... and now with a funding boost of $8 million, the walk is set to become a world class destination.
Tour operator Tim Shepherd from Light2Light Coastal Walks is understandably passionate about the walk, and the positive feedback from participants:
"This walk checks all the boxes - fascinating history, raw beauty, abundant wildlife - including whales during the season - plus it's an easy walk by hiking standards, so it's accessible to those who aren't particularly fit or energetic, people are just loving it". Upgrades to the walk will see the wild and remote four day coastal walk elevate to one of the state’s most spectacular trails with eco-designed, environmentally sensitive accommodation along the way, providing a hut-to-hut experience similar to some of the other world-famous trails in New Zealand & Tasmania, which are often booked up months, if not years, in advance. Aside from the obvious economic benefits, more importantly, the walk will encourage a new generation to connect with nature, potentially becoming future advocates for the protection of our environment. A win-win in anyone's book. For more information visit www.light2light.com.au
