RESIDENTS CAN HELP CONTAIN THE PESTS IN A TOUGH SEASON by Katia Savchuk fter late rains and the discovery of West Nile virus in the county, officials are gearing up for a challenging mosquito season â€” and asking residents to pitch in. Fifteen dead birds infected with the virus have turned up since the beginning of the year, including one in Palo Alto and two at Stanford, according to Santa Clara County Vector Control District manager Russ Parman. Although they have not yet found infected mosquitoes, â€œother surveillance indicators tell us that the virus is quite active this year,â€? he said. Recent rainfall has left abundant pools of standing water, creating more breeding habitats for the pests this spring. Although concentrations are only slightly higher than average, they are more evenly spread across the county. â€œItâ€™s very much easier for a bird to go out right now and encounter a mosquito,â€? of stagnant water in human environments. Vector-control district officials have declared mosquito abatement their top priority this year. Their main mission: curbing the spread of West Nile. The agency is sampling mosquitoes within a mile of where infected birds died, focusing on a â€œhigh-risk areaâ€? covering parts of San Jose, Campbell and Cupertino. If a mosquito tests positive for the virus, the district will conduct â€œlimited fogging operationsâ€? using Pyrenone 25-5, a low-volume insecticide that is â€œessentially nontoxic to just about everything except for mosquitoes,â€? Parman said. â€œThis year appears to be getting off to a much more active start than last year, so the odds are that we will be finding infected mosquitoes and initiating fogging,â€? he predicted. No fogging has taken place in Palo Alto since the county introduced the technique in 2005, a year after West Nile first made an appearance in the area. Last year, Sunnyvale was the only site to be sprayed. Aerial tactics also include surveying cities to locate poorly maintained backyard swimming pools and ponds. A survey in San Jose this year found more than 800 green or half-empty pools perfect for breeding mosquitoes. The agency plans to fly over Palo Alto in July. Aerial surveys have logged 3,500
properties with ill-maintained pools since they began in 2007. â€œThereâ€™s a lot of work out there, and the pools are very, very significant producers of mosquitoes,â€? Parman said. He urged residents to clean up stagnant water and notify the district of mosquito problems and abandoned pools. â€œThe more eyes and ears we have, the more ground we can cover,â€? he said. The district offers free home or yard inspections. Theyâ€™ll even throw in complimentary mosquito fish â€” guppy-like predators that devour almost anything â€” to gobble up larvae. Safe for humans, mosquito fish are also available in local nurseries. Besides obvious habitats such as pools, mosquitoes can breed in water hidden in gutters, buckets or birdbaths. Even large flowers can collect suitable puddles. â€œWater can be in the darndest places,â€? noted Dave Peterson, who has staffed the Master Gardener hotline at Gamble Garden for 13 years. â€œIt can be as small as a thimble.â€? Even that is enough for raising a colony of mosquitoes. Females can lay up to 300 eggs at a time, and the reproductive cycle takes only five days. â€œYou donâ€™t have any warning â€” they show up overnight, practically,â€? Peterson said. When they do, residents are the closest food source. Peterson suggests using candles containing citronella oil, a plantbased repellent, or other natural
methods to ward off the pests. He does not recommend blacklights, which he said are rather ineffective and kill beneficial insects. Bacterial products also offer natural pest control. Available at local nurseries, they work by affecting the mosquito larvae. Like Peterson, most experts suggest that residents avoid chemical controls, which can kill helpful critters such as dragonflies, which prey on mosquitoes. More importantly, poisons can work their way up the food chain, including to fish and humans. â€œThere are just a lot of impacts when you add toxins to the ecosystem, some of which you can predict and some of which you canâ€™t,â€? warned Claire Elliot, who directs the stewardship program at Acterra, an environmental nonprofit in Palo Alto. She recalled a case in the 1950s, when the World Health Organization sprayed DDT to curb a malaria outbreak in Borneo. The pesticide ended up killing wasps that ate thatch-eating caterpillars, and peopleâ€™s roofs collapsed. To boot, geckos ate poisoned insects, cats died off after eating the geckoes, and the rat population exploded. Two new diseases broke out as a result. â€œThereâ€™s an example of why you donâ€™t want to spray for mosquitoes,â€? Elliot said. Even with pesticides that target mosquitoes specifically, â€œDo they know for sure?â€? Elliot wondered. â€œSometimes the chemicals have
breakdown products that are more toxic than the chemicals themselves.â€? Doug Moran, who lives in Barron Park, sticks to natural methods for controlling mosquitoes that fly up from neighboring Matadero Creek. Urban creeks are a known breeding source, and Vector Control surveys them annually. County officials are also partnering with rangers to monitor water levels in the cityâ€™s flood basin, where three creeks meet, to prevent fluctuations that help mosquitoes multiply. Still, â€œweâ€™re getting eaten by mosquitoes here,â€? complained Moran, who was president of the Baron Park Association for six years. A computer scientist by day, Moran tests for mosquito larvae by sampling water in a backyard bucket. They look like â€œlittle rods that will just wiggle like crazy when you disturb the water,â€? he said. When larvae show up, he emails neighbors, encouraging them to hunt for forgotten pools of water. He also finds that spiders keep the pests at bay. â€œIâ€™m very nice to my spiders,â€? he said. â€œIt grosses some people out ... (but) I can leave my door open and not worry about mosquitoes.â€? In addition to the flood zone, catch basins â€” street-corner inlets that carry rainwater to creeks â€” are a source of mosquitoes in Palo Alto. Older basins have a â€œfrumpâ€? at the bottom that gathers a small pool of standing water. â€œIn the summertime that can get full of water, if people, for example, over-water their lawn,â€?
said Joe Teresi, a senior engineer in the public works department. He encouraged people to water lawns sparingly and avoid washing cars in the street. Besides mosquito-proofing homes, experts are urging people to protect themselves from bites by wearing long-sleeved clothing and using over-the-counter repellants, especially if outside during dawn and dusk. That is feeding time for culex mosquitoes, the species that carries West Nile. Eighty percent of people infected with the virus do not know they have it, but a majority of those who do develop severe flu-like symptoms and spend an average of 16 days off work. â€œItâ€™s not an insignificant disease,â€? Parman warned. A smaller percentage develop a form of the disease that causes neurological damage or even death. If infected, older adults and those with a compromised immune system are more likely to develop a dangerous form of the disease, Parman said. Children are not at higher risk. Although no human cases of West Nile have been confirmed in the county in 2010, Parmanâ€™s message is clear: â€œThe virus is here throughout the county, and during this time of year all the way through September, there is a risk of acquiring it if youâ€™re bitten by an infected mosquito.â€? The green side of stewardship by Iris oes anyone in this new decade remember the meaning of stewardship? The dictionary meaning states â€œone who manages anotherâ€™s property, finances, or other affairs.â€? I had a better understanding of the word when I took my one and only cruise-ship tour along the inside passage of Alaska. The stewards of the ship were introduced to us and you could tell they were very proud of their ship, its condition and extremely happy to be part of the crew that made the ship such a wonderful â€œhome away from home.â€? The word â€œshipshapeâ€? comes from the fastidious daily work of stewards who keep their ship meticulously neat and orderly. We came back to our room from breakfast and our bed was already made and our clothes were neatly folded. The extended meaning of stewardship has come to be known among conservationists as wanting planet Earth to be more sweet and pristine than they found it, so the next generation can take the serious charge of managing our world with perpetuity in mind for their children. We all own the Earth in common and in that sense we are in the position of stewards on a ship in a vast ocean of water or space. We must either keep the earthship pristine, shipshape and make it nicer than when we came here, or our ship could falter or sink from our negligence. It would not be the wonderful home it has been for many past generations. How do we teach stewardship at an early age to children so that it is not a foreign concept? And if we do teach it, what is in it for us and the next generations? I saw a recent documentary about the â€œDust Bowlâ€? of the 1930s. A North Carolinian was expressing how horrible it was to be standing on his East Coast farm and watch the dust blow onto his property from Oklahoma in the Midwest. What helped cause that great tragedy and period of national hardship? The lack of understanding of rotation of crops and how to enhance the soil versus just trying to repeatedly extract money crops from the soil yearly was a major reason. And what caused the Great Depression on Wall Street in the â€™30s? Could lack of stewardship have been a main cause of this financial meltdown where one out of four Americans were unemployed? Are there any correlations we can abstract from this

Harrell in the 2009 financial meltdown and the current oil spill in the Louisiana Gulf? Is it more important for us to have cheap gas and oil in our sputtering cars than it is to save the ocean and the coastline life that we all take for granted until it is suddenly trashed? I saw another documentary this week on an elementary school in Japan where 7-yearold children were learning housecleaning and taught how to keep their school clean. They cleaned their own classrooms on a daily basis and seemed happy and excited to do so. The Japanese word â€œkireiâ€? has two meanings simultaneously â€” clean and beautiful. How many 7-year-old Americans do you know who have had housecleaning lessons? Is there something about stewardship that we could learn from our Japanese neighbors, who take their shoes off when they enter a home? (A large proportion of dirt in homes is tracked in by shoes.) The lessons I was taught about stewardship were in church where the Biblical verse was often quoted that says, â€œCleanliness is next to godliness.â€? Cleanliness was stressed a lot in my upbringing and I never questioned why it was so important. It was part of our stewardship training of caring for what we had. The last part of stewardship I wish to stress is the act of conserving for the next generation. My partnerâ€™s grandfather, affectionately known as â€œBobo,â€? had a lifelong passion of restoring the land by planting trees. Boboâ€™s father had cut down a lot of trees and Bobo wanted to â€œmake it rightâ€? by replanting in a fruitful, productive way. So he planted pecan orchards â€” the â€œnutâ€? version of Johnny Appleseed. May the spirit of Grandpa Bobo influence us strongly enough to make us passionate stewards of our Earthship as we ride together.
