DESIGNING THE PROCESS TO DELIVER EXCELLENT AV PROJECTS
By Rhythm Arora, Chief Technical Officer, Qubix Technologies
AV integration is a crucial part of offering cutting-edge technologies to the users. Blending the high-end AV, lighting, and pro audio solutions, systems integrators play a vital role in creating a true spectacle at the sites, delivering AV excellence in the Indian market. From the AV-ICN Expo Conference and Seminar this year, Magazine team brings another excerpt from the session by RHYTHM ARORA, CTO, Qubix Technologies, discussing the important stages in a project, why to build excellence, and how to tackle the challenges while deploying an entire AV project.
Phase I – Establishing the Project
Rhythm starts the session by sharing some of his experiences from the past, explaining how it’s important to keep customer expectations in mind, achieve a well delivered project, and most essentially understand the pre-sales service. He states, “Pre-sales is the time when we get to know our customers and their requirements. We start interacting with them and chalk out everything that’s required because this is the only phase where we can convince the customers. Integrators should focus on what has always worked as that brings the confidence to convince the client as well. We can try giving clients something which is ahead of our times but at the end it should be a workable solution, meeting the schedule requirements.”
Rhythm further elaborates, “Another thing is to really control what we present to the clients. For instance, when someone comes to see a show, there are so many features working out at the same time, but what’s crucial to the clients, are the extravagant features that we can offer. As integrators or consultants, it’s our responsibility as professionals to gauge which features they require. This is all a part of the pre-sales process to control what the clients’ demand and shoot down things that might not work 100% at the time of deployment. I am not saying that high-tech projects should be avoided completely but such projects should be on the proven edge of the technology.”
Phase II – Affirming with the Documentation and Detailing
Once the project is awarded and the company has received the confirmation to manage the project, how should the team move forward with it? Rhythm explains, “It’s time to spell out all the expectations because generally, once the PO is printed, even the clients won’t be able to work things out in terms of payment, retention, billing format, documentation, insurance, etc. Moreover, for under construction sites, it’s important to discuss the storage space because integrations in offices may have the storage space required by systems integrators. However, under construction buildings might require the company to have their own storage, which costs a lot. In fact, many PMC’s have started deducting power, electricity, water, or even housekeeping charges from the final bill. Therefore, by the end of the project, there’s around 2-3% deduction.”
Rhythm continues, “Another essential situation nowadays, is that OEMs have started giving warranty of 5 years, so the clients expect this from the integrators as well. Therefore, the entire process needs to be communicated really well to the clients that OEMs work on OEM warranties, but integrators offer DLP, that is Defect Liability Period, which could be six months to a year in practice.”
While talking about the entire integration process, it is necessary to understand the small details that go behind documentation and timelines. Moving forward with this discussion, Rhythm explained, “It’s necessary for an integrator to be aware of the teams involved in signing the bills, drawings, and the delivery. Furthermore, it’s important to keep a note of the estimated dates for project completion.” He adds, “From the contract stage, we move onto the kick-off meeting stage where we meet a new set of professionals like stakeholders on site who verify everything. During this verification and standardisation process, it’s necessary to take maximum number of people from the team to understand everything that will happen on ground. Every small project for a customer is very important and as integrators, it is important to make them understand that we care.”
Phase III- Planning the Entire Deployment
With various phases of processing and
execution, next on the list is planning where a systems integrator must undergo detailed analysation of the entire project. Adding to the list of priorities, Rhythm further informs the audience, “We must distribute very realistic responsibilities amongst the team including passive pre-wiring and active pre-wiring. Let the customer complete all the wirings, get the partitions ready, finish the furniture, do the brackets mounting, etc. Once the site is near dust-free, we start installing the actives and prepare a real delivery schedule with actual delete times (that are kept confidential to the team only). Further, at this stage, integrators can schedule external teams necessary for the tasks like programmers, consultants, manpower vendors, or even fabricators, keeping a track of the timelines.” He adds, “Another important thing is not to ship while the site is in construction as if it’s shipped and they are not ready to receive it, there won’t be any space to keep the material. Also, handover date is not so important because the client’s target is always incorrect. Out of the 100 projects I have done, for instance, 99 projects’ dates were at least 15-20 days prior.”
Phase IV – Billing Phase
While we move to the billing phase, it’s important to sort everything beforehand as once the billing is completed, it’s not easy to cancel a bill after it has been generated. Furthermore, everything needs to be documented and verified before submissions. Comprehending the tasks, Rhythm says, “Whether it’s a small shipment or a large one, maintaining the invoices is really essential. I would always suggest billing separate services in separate invoices.”
Phase V – Working Out the Integration
To make the audience understand the technical aspects of leading the AV projects, Rhythm comments, “I would say the geometry of any installation is very important. It has to be absolutely straight level considering the height spacing. In fact, IP addresses, passwords, and everything should be written down in this phase to avoid any lack of installations later.”
Phase VI – Handing Over the Project
Rhythm continues to mesmerise the audience with the detailing that goes behind
integrating an entire site with AV solutions. After the integration phase, Rhythm emphasises on the handover phase stating, “The handover phase means providing the completely integrated room to the client. It includes testing, cleaning, cable dressing, and removal of all packaging. There will always be 80-90% easy areas in a project and 10-20% complex areas, so at least the convenient portions can be finished first and handed over to the client, compiling everything into a master.”
Phase VII – After Sales Services
Moving forward, Rhythm also analyses the need for after sales services in AV industry, stating, “If it’s a complex project, it will need a lot of handholding and support by the teams. Users may need some workflow changes, or they may need some volume controller. Therefore, some visits or escalations may be needed in later stages. Moreover, there is always a high possibility of facing some issues that the teams might never have anticipated. To crosscheck all those, it’s essential to go around and double check everything on site.” He adds, “The handover process usually passes down from internal technical team to sales team and from sales team to quality assurance team. In India, there are no particular quality assurance specialists and therefore, the owners of the company need to perform as the specialists and check everything at the site.”
Conclusion
Integrators work closely with the vendors, technicians, architects, MEP teams, and more to build excellence in terms of integrating AV solutions. Rhythm concludes, “I always say that we want to build excellence because active profits coming from the companies can never make us rich; it can only be possible if we build a brand around it. In fact, when we do plenty of projects, there may be a lot of disappointments, and a lot of projects might have so many hurdles. The scope is absolutely not defined at times and there are things which are very inevitable especially when integrating an audio project.”

LIGHTWARE
INTRODUCES
TAURUS UCX WITH NEW DANTE AUDIO CAPABILITIES
Lightware’s Taurus UCX product lineup expanded with two new Dante-compatible variants: introducing the devices in 4x2 and 4x3 crosspoint sizes.
These devices retain the advantages of the alreadyfamiliar universal matrix switchers, such as easy and straightforward connectivity, simplified and automated controls, or HDMI and USB-C right at hand.
In the case of the newly introduced product variants, it is true that the switcher also thrives when it comes to audio capabilities, offering analog audio de-embedding features as well as support for DANTE/AES67 network connection to
send DANTE/AES67 audio stream directly to a dedicated audio system.
In addition, the BRIDGED DANTE Bidirectional Dante variant is recommended for medium-sized rooms and auditoriums,
because of the built in DSP. The UCX-4x3-HC40-BD universal matrix switcher with Dante USB Audio Bridge feature facilitates two-way Dante functions, enabling its use in meeting rooms equipped with a Dante microphone or other DANTE sources, all without the need for an external DSP or Dante/USB dongle. Dante operates bidirectionally with 2 input channels and 2 output channels. In addition to the DSP functionality, the Taurus device includes a Dante-to-USB bridge. This bridge enables bi-directional conversion between Dante and USB, allowing the computer to recognise the Taurus as a USB audio device. When connected via USB to a PC, the Taurus can be renamed as a USB audio device.
NETGEAR AND SAMSUNG ELECTRONICS JOIN FORCES FOR SEAMLESS WIFI 7 EXPERIENCES
NETGEAR, one of the leaders in advanced networking technologies for homes, businesses, and service providers around the world, announced a strategic collaboration with Samsung Electronics’ System LSI Business to help create seamless interoperability and roaming between NETGEAR Business WiFi 7 access points and Samsung’s WiFi 7 client chipset solution.
In environments with multiple mobile devices all needing to get online at any time, one of the biggest issues to solve is WiFi roaming. Stationary devices that connect to one access point all the time don’t usually have a problem getting online, but users with cell phones, moving from one floor to another in an office building or from building to building on a campus may experience some lag in connectivity as their phones disconnect from one access point and try to connect to the next. The problem is amplified in an auditorium, for example, where hundreds of users converge in one place and
try to connect to the same access point all at once. This pain point, identified by NETGEAR and Samsung as a top priority, is bringing the two companies together to work on a solution.
In addition to an expanding range of WiFi 7 Routers and mesh systems available through consumer channels, NETGEAR offers WiFi 7 access points to its
commercial customers as part of its Total Network Solution.
Both the WBE750 Insight Manageable Tri-band WiFi 7 Access Point and the recently announced WBE710 Insight Manageable Tri-band WiFi 7 Access Point provide the deep capabilities that today’s complex businesses need, including real-time responsiveness, low latency, and increased capacity. Their high WiFi throughput and ability to support multiple concurrent devices are among the most advanced available today. The access points will also help to solve issues around signal interference with preamble puncturing and allow devices to use parts of different channels to transmit data, greatly reducing network congestion.
Business WiFi 7
The initial work on WiFi roaming is part of an ongoing relationship between NETGEAR and Samsung with a goal of creating flawless interoperability between NETGEAR networking solutions and Samsung WiFi 7 clients for the ultimate enduser experience.

CLEARER AUDIO IN
MEETING SPACES WITH VOICE-LIFT TECHNOLOGY
Voice Lift technology enhances communication environment in meeting spaces amplifying sound, not only making it easier for audiences to hear but also simplifying the process for integrators.
Robin Ghose, Business Development Manager (Professional & Consumer), Audio-Technica India, in this feature, shares his thoughts on the use of Voice Lift technology in today’s meeting room spaces.
If you’ve ever found yourself straining to hear a speaker in a large room, you understand the need for Voice Lift technology. This innovative solution, with its simplicity, enhances the communication environment in spaces where voices struggle to carry. It’s not about amplifying sound throughout the room but rather providing a subtle lift in areas where sound doesn’t travel well, making it easier for people in those spots to hear the speaker. The beauty of this technology is its ease of use - it’s so subtle that you’re more likely to notice it when it’s not there.
How Voice Lift Technology Improves Meeting Spaces
Whether it’s a classroom, a meeting room, or any space where people gather, Voice Lift technology enhances the presenter’s words, making them more intelligible. It also significantly reduces the strain on both the speaker and the listeners. The speaker doesn’t have to strain to be heard, and the listeners in the back of the room don’t have to strain to listen. It’s a win-win situation for everyone involved, making the communication process smoother and more enjoyable.
It’s not just room users who benefit. It makes it simpler for installers and integrators, as they do not need to add wireless
microphones across the room. A move that also simplifies maintenance. The technology team does not need to keep track of the transmitter, replace broken mics, and manage mic battery life. Plus, adding wireless mics increases the cost and complexity of installation. With Voice Lift technology, the process becomes more straightforward, saving time and resources for the installers and integrators.
With the ceiling-mounted beamforming microphone, all the complexity of managing multiple devices and technology disappears. The microphone takes the feed and performs voice lift to the back of the room without the instructor or presenter worrying about the technical details. The biggest gain is that it just works, providing a seamless and stress-free experience.
Where And Why To Use Voice Lift
Voice Lift technology isn’t necessary in small to medium-sized meeting spaces, but it creates better communication experiences in larger rooms. A Voice Lift is recommended for rooms 40 feet by 40 feet, with at least 25 feet between or bigger, as they are large enough to make audibility challenging across the corners of the room. Those in the back of the room often struggle to hear or rely on
Robin Ghose, Business Development Manager (Professional & Consumer), Audio-Technica India
the speaker’s use of a gooseneck or other mobile microphone.
In smaller rooms, audio clarity challenges are often due to the room’s poor acoustic signature, and acoustic treatment may be required to fix it. Room acoustics refers to how sound behaves in a particular space, influenced by factors such as the room’s size, shape, and surface materials. Poor acoustics can be due to excessive noise from air handling systems, hallway traffic, electronic equipment, and more.
In theory, there is no limit to the size of the room where a voice lift system can be installed; however, the ceiling height will affect the system’s success more than the room size. The recommended height for ceiling microphones is between 8 and 12 feet above the floor. While installation is possible in rooms with higher ceilings, it will depend on the room’s acoustics.
Voice Lift systems are particularly beneficial in environments where conversations are interactive and multi-directional, involving not only a primary instructor or presenter at the front of the room but also students or audience members.
Conventional sound systems are designed to ensure that the presenter is audible to the audience, but they don’t help people in the audience to hear each other, whereas video conferencing systems are designed to foster interactivity between participants at different locations, often overlooking the role of facilitating communication among people present in the same room.
This is where Voice Lift Technology steps in, restoring the speaker’s natural speech level evenly throughout the room so that the audience can listen to each other clearly without straining.
Room Details For Integrators To Consider
For integrators and users considering Voice Lift, it helps to remember that the technology is part of a complete audio system – not just the microphone. Here are a few things to consider:
• Room size
• Room design
• Ceiling height
• Room acoustics
• Loudspeaker locations
• Ceiling type (drywall, concrete, drop ceiling with tiles, etc.)
• Room use
(Image Courtesy: Audio-Technica) ATND1061DAN is designed for ease of use, helping to keep the room uncluttered, for clearer meeting spaces
Choosing Voice Lift Solutions for Intelligible Audio
Several companies offer Voice Lift microphones today, with top brands including Shure, Audio-Technica, and ClearOne Evaluating the available options is essential to find the right product for your requirements.
Considering the following could be a good starting point:
• Product quality and reliability
• Ease of control and configuration
• Product performance
• After-sales support
• Microphone feedback
• Microphone noise reduction capability
• Flexibility in loudspeaker and microphone placement
• Reviews & testimonials from experts & customers
• Cost
Voice Lift Solutions Create Better Spaces
When it comes to technology like Voice Lift, users shouldn’t have to undergo extensive training or interact with complex audio solutions. They should be able to walk into a room and trust that the system will work seamlessly — a promise that the ATND1061DAN with Voice Lift faithfully fulfills. It’s designed for ease of use, helping to keep the room uncluttered, aesthetically pleasing, and easy to manage.
Control and Configuration
With many spaces now configured for various uses, a Voice Lift system
must be easily controllable to be truly beneficial. For example, the Voice Lift system might not be needed during video conferences or small group collaborations. However, when it’s time for groups to share their ideas, Voice Lift can be activated so everyone can clearly hear each other.
Final Step
A competent integrator is essential for a well-designed and functional audio solution. It’s crucial to select a systems integrator with expertise in Voice Lift systems who can make necessary adjustments during commissioning. A high-quality system that is improperly installed or configured may result in a poor investment.
An experienced installer begins by equalizing the loudspeakers to optimize them for the room. This step is critical to ensure the system’s stability and consistent delivery of the expected speech level across all zones.
A properly installed Voice Lift system should subtly enhance a room’s acoustics. When set up correctly, most individuals may not even notice the system is active. Only when the system is turned off does its absence become apparent, highlighting its significance. It underscores the effectiveness of a well-implemented voice lift system, as it enhances overall communication experiences, making interactions feel more natural. The Voice Lift solution is cost-effective and easy to configure, ensuring seamless integration into various environments.

OPTIMIZING ACOUSTICS FOR WORKSPACES:
A COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE FOR AV PARTNERS
With Abdul Waheed, Managing Director, EYTE Technologies Pvt Ltd (CTS-I)
Conceptualising acoustics in meeting rooms and auditoriums, systems integrators and AV consultants have been working hard to establish best design spaces for the Indian AV industry. ABDUL WAHEED, a dynamic AV industry leader and Managing Director at EYTE Technologies, shares all about acoustical excellence and how to overcome design challenges in meeting spaces at the conference session held on Day 3 of AV-ICN Expo 2024. Abdul Waheed has spent decades before heading towards something more unconventional which made him form EYTE. With the aim to stay ahead of technology and emerging trends, Waheed ensures the generation of ROI and ROO with best-in-class solutions. AV-ICN Expo Magazine team brings out this short excerpt from his session for the readers to learn more about the importance of acoustic comfort, noise challenges in office environments, design principles for open office layouts, and more.
rising demand for virtual platforms. For instance, educational institutions had to fully embrace AV platforms, recognising the vital role of technology today.”
Advancing Acoustics with Modern-Day Solutions
Waheed highlighted that well-designed acoustic spaces significantly enhance employee productivity by reducing stress and fatigue, improving collaboration, and boosting cognitive performance. He stressed the importance of two key concepts in workspace design:
Speech Intelligibility: Listeners should be able to clearly hear and understand spoken words. For this, audio signals must dissipate in a controlled manner, which can be achieved by using absorptive materials like soft carpets, acoustic ceiling tiles, or wall panelling.
Sound Privacy: Sound isolation is crucial in ensuring that conversations in meeting rooms remain confidential and are not disrupted by external noise. Waheed explained, “For example, if a cafeteria is located next to a meeting room, proper sound isolation is needed to avoid disturbances. Acoustic consultants should either suggest relocating the space or applying treatments like additional wall layers and properly isolating ceilings to prevent noise leakage.”
Waheed also discussed the importance of Sound Transmission Coefficient (STC), which measures how effectively sound is blocked between rooms. He noted, “Office partitions typically have an STC rating between 40 and 50. Higher STC levels require thicker, more expensive partitions. To calculate STC, consultants play a noise in one room and measure how much of it is transmitted to the adjacent room.”
Enhancing Acoustic Excellence
The acoustically addressed spaces offer employees’ productivity in workspaces like reduced stress and fatigue, improved collaboration, and better cognitive performance of employees. He states, “There are certain concepts that need to be clear for workspace design guys. First concept is
sound intelligibility which means listeners should be able to hear the spoken words and understand it clearly. Speech Intelligibility is also an important factor in designing any meeting room. The audio signals in the form of energy generated by a source have to die down in a room for speech clarity, for which we need to have absorptive material surfaces in the room such as soft carpet, ceiling with absorptive material, or maybe a soft panelling work on the walls.”
Waheed adds, “Second concept is sound privacy, which means any audio interfering the conversation in a meeting room needs isolation. For instance, if there’s a cafeteria next to a meeting room which can create lot of disturbance in the meeting room without sound isolation, as an acoustic consultant, we need to ask the client to either relocate the space or do a proper treatment of walls for isolation, else the boardroom or the meeting room might get lot of disturbances. The sound isolation is normally achieved by adding layers to the partition wall, and properly isolating the ceiling and the wall with acoustical treatments.”
He adds, “Sound Transmission Coefficient, STC is the amount of audio prevented of getting transferred to other room. Good partitions can stop 30%-40% of the audio depending on the thickness of partitions and the material used. To calculate the Sound Transmission Coefficient, consultants play an audio from the room with 100 DB white noise or pink noise which is then measured on other side of the partition to calculate the achieved STC levels. Office spaces are mostly designed with 40-50 STC partitions because to have more STC, the partition has to be thicker which makes it costlier.”
The modern office designs are coming up with open ceiling concepts. Waheed continues, “Architects normally like to go for open ceiling. However, as an acoustical consultant, it’s our responsibility to guide them on the proper acoustical solutions for the same. One more concept in silent
offices is adding sound masking speakers. Many global offices having origins of US, Canada, and UK demand for the same due to their colder climates. This creates external ambience levels for better sound privacy. However, in cities like Mumbai and Delhi, where air conditioners are prevalent, they naturally provide some level of sound masking.”
Acoustical Brilliance in Auditoriums and Training Rooms
Waheed also stressed the importance of uniform audio distribution in large spaces like auditoriums and training rooms. During the session Waheed explained, “If speakers are placed only on the sides of the room, those in the front rows will hear the audio clearly, while those in the back will struggle. Increasing the volume may disturb people in the front. To create a balanced audio experience throughout the space, consultants use simulations to plan speaker placement, angles, and appropriate decibel levels.”
He further noted that even with the right materials and speaker setup, poor workmanship—such as misaligned doors or punctured walls—can lead to audio leaks. To address this, Waheed recommended ensuring partitions run from true floor to the true ceiling and taking other preventive measures.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Waheed’s session offered valuable insights into the meticulous planning required to optimize acoustic performance in meeting rooms and auditoriums. He stressed the importance of research, thoughtful design, and quality implementation to ensure the best possible acoustic environments. Attendees left with a deeper understanding of concepts like sound masking and how to maintain acoustic excellence in high-functioning spaces.

2020s Meet the UCC Race DYNAMICS
By Ritika Pandey
The highly anticipated technology-driven era is already here, and we are living it! Made possible by the leading systems integrators and AV consultants, this decade is fusing smart tech, immersive solutions, projection mapping, and more to integrate high-end venues with innovations like never before. With the world’s changing dynamics, let’s talk about how India is catching up with the leading pro AV technologies of today like LEDs, projectors, and especially conference and collaboration solutions.
Indian pro AV market is hitting the world’s top ranks once again since the pandemic with numerous concerts, exhibitions, and live events being hosted constantly around the country. Needless to say, a big credit goes to our systems integrators and AV consultants.
As we swirl around the Indian audiovisual industry, we can surely see collaboration and communication technologies playing at the forefront of this technology-driven era. Corporate and education segments are propelling the Indian AV market right now, especially with the adoption of new protocols since the pandemic. According to the IMARC Report, Indian video conferencing market size is projected to exhibit a growth rate (CAGR) of 13% during 2024-2032. To lead this tech drift, top players like Crestron, Netgear, Logitech, Optoma, Neat, and many more, are advancing the Indian pro AV industry with their involvement in
miraculous projects. Optoma has installed more than 5,000 displays and over 2,00,000 projectors across India, marking significant penetration in the market. Netgear has been one of the greatest contributors for the pro AV industry and expects to expand its manufacturing facilities in India soon. Even Crestron has shared a tremendous time with the AV industry partnering with other giants to deliver streamlined collaboration solutions around the country.
After all the backbreaking by techchasing brands, systems integrators and AV consultant create a spectacle out of the leading-edge solutions. Every AV integrator and consultant is aiming big for upcoming projects nationwide. Large government projects like India’s leading MICE destination – Yashobhoomi, have transformed the pro AV state around the country and we are convinced there are many more to come.
However, this doesn’t mean live events, or our intriguing entertainment market is coming to a halt. The projector’s segment is not seeing an uprise in the gaming segment, but the trends are certainly giving a shout out to the laser projectors’ market. Projection mapping is another sensation for the AV industry right now with a long list of immersive examples reshaping the entire segment like the biggest stories from the Statue of Unity to Ram Mandir’s inauguration. It won’t be possible to cover the projector’s segment in one go but, keep an eye on our ‘AV Installations: Glimpses’ feature to go through the best projections and installations occurring in India. Both industry-magnates and pioneering systems integrators are on their toes to deliver world-class AV solutions around the country in the coming years. With highly engaging visual content and auditory experiences available across the world, it’s possible to say the world is taking massive turns with AV technologies and industry-leading solutions. While the 2020 decade is vibing with the UCC solutions, the next decade could all be about 3D mapping technologies or something more. But with these technological demands and rising market segments, where do you think residential AV going?
Keep a watch on the latest trends and experience a walkthrough to the changing dynamics in this column. Feel free to share insights from the AV industry. Contact: ritika.pandey@hyve.group.

Guest Column 45% of Graduating Engineers Unemployed,
It’s a paradox: while 45% of graduating engineers remain unemployed, businesses—especially in the AV industry—struggle to hire skilled or semi-skilled workers, even at wages well above the minimum.
Although there’s been extensive discussion around aligning education with industry needs, skill development isn’t the only issue keeping engineers unemployed.
Overemphasis on Government Jobs
Government jobs, often seen as “set for life” regardless of effort, are still the ideal for many. Private-sector jobs, even with higher pay, are viewed as compromises and seldom the first choice.
Parental Influence and Comfort Zones
Many young graduates also face pressure from their families. Parents often take pride in supporting a dependent, making the transition into the workforce
Yet AV Companies Struggle to Find Talent –How to Bridge the Gap?
The irony of India’s engineering landscape is stark; despite nearly half of graduating engineers remaining unemployed, businesses in the audiovisual industry struggle to find skilled talent, even at attractive salaries. In this insightful article, Rhythm Arora, Chief Technical Officer at Qubix Technologies, delves into the underlying causes of this disconnect, exploring the cultural, societal, and economic factors that influence the career choices of young engineers. Arora provides insight on the challenges facing the AV industry and proposes practical solutions to bridge the gap between unemployed engineers and the AV industry’s talent needs.
The Probable Solution
harder. In some cases, new hires quit within weeks, citing homesickness or the lack of home-cooked meals. Instead of encouraging resilience, families often urge them to return home, where they’re assured, they won’t need to work.
Big City Hurdles
Engineering jobs are concentrated in major cities, where the challenges of adjusting to new environments—finding accommodation, food, and surviving the initial days—can be overwhelming for recent graduates.
Both problems seem significant but can be addressed. We need to make private-sector jobs—especially in industries like AV and IT—more appealing and accessible. The reality is that salaries in these sectors are far higher than most government jobs, even when factoring in retirement benefits.
By improving the perception of private-sector careers and offering better support during the transition, we can help bridge the gap between the unemployed talent pool and the industries in need of manpower.
Seasoned Vice President with over 30 years of experience of global leadership, RICHARD JONKER of NETGEAR sat down with the editorial team of AV-ICN Expo Magazine to talk about the high-end technologies coming up in the AV market and how India is a great country to adapt to the rapidly evolving world. In his interview, he shares insights on the achievements of NETGEAR and the future possibilities that can shape the IT and AV segments.
with Richard Jonker
Vice President Marketing and Business Development, NETGEAR
1. Can you provide insights into your responsibilities as Vice President of Marketing and Commercial Business Development for the Asia-Pacific region at NETGEAR?
I cover global commercial marketing for our commercial IT and AV business. I work on positioning, public relations, messaging and channel communications. For the commercial business development part, I try to build relations with the manufacturers in the industry. With those relations, we build product integrations. The goal here, is to make network IP technology easier for the channel and for users.
While, black and white spoken, AV people don’t know IT and IT people don’t know AV, it’s very well possible to teach AV professionals about relevant IT. They already have great skills understanding user experience. So, what we at NETGEAR try to do, is build integrations with manufacturers in the AV space for easy deployment.
Whether it is success in I.T. or A.V., I always compare it with being a great plumber. If you are rich and you try to build a large villa with a beautiful washroom and shower with marble everywhere, it’s necessary to select the right plumber. If you don’t do that, and there’s a problem with a pipe, you might have to break open the beautiful marble floor and put in a new bigger pipe. That’s our message - Call the plumber first. We are the plumbers for I.T. and for AV-over-IP. Therefore, my job is to ensure we have the absolute integrations and network design capabilities required by our customers. We achieve this while keeping up an agnostic approach.
I also assist the local sales teams with their relations, like what I do here in India, connecting with distributors and manufacturers, keeping up with expansion in the APAC region.
2. What are the important milestones in the history of NETGEAR?
I think we had a couple of milestones since NETGEAR’s inception, which is a 28-year-old company. A very important milestone that I noticed in NETGEAR’s history is that the people who started early with the brand are still with us, including myself, coming up to 18 years. Business is done by people and NETGEAR, also in India, completely relies on local relationships built by people
Another milestone for NETGEAR was entering the AV world. Besides, the fastest growing business that NETGEAR has worldwide, is in India. In fact, NETGEAR’s fastest growing technology is AV-over-IP and that is absolutely exploding in the Indian market today. USA is our number one market, the second largest market is
the region that’s currently managed by Marthesh Nagendra, who was previously the Country Manager of India. He now overseas all the Asia business, which also includes Middle East, Africa, Australia, and Japan. We realize, talking about a milestone, that his team now covers more than half of the global population.
3. How does NETGEAR’s AV switch line cater to the specific needs of commercial audiovisual installations, and what sets it apart from the competitors?
Pro AV is changing to AV-over-IP, which is based on network technology. That, by itself, is highly standardised. It consists of a bunch of IEEE open standards - but to deploy it is difficult. Understanding and addressing the network and AV-over-IP part of the technology is NETGEAR’s specialism. We are the only company in the world that makes this easy, by providing a lot of automations. We work with over 300 manufacturers in this space. The settings and configuration tweaking we do with them in the background take years of investing in testing, engineering, and certifying. Once that’s achieved, we add a preset profile that the users can see their favourite manufacturer in the user interface of the switch or engage site controller.
Another unique proposition of NETGEAR is that we include the design assistance for networks in the IT and AV space, along with the set-up, installation, and the post sales service - all-inone.
There’s no shortage of technical talent in this country, but it’s crucial to train people on how to do commercial WiFi or AV-over-IP well. NETGEAR’s aim is to expand expertise in the country. The integrators and reseller communities show gratitude and appreciate this initiative, and we can see that thousands of people engage with us at tradeshows or training events.
4. How does NETGEAR’s portfolio of networking products, such as switches, routers and WiFi, address the evolving needs of small and medium-sized businesses?
We have two businesses – one is the
IT applications where we focus on commercial businesses and the education sector. That consists of wired networking and switching, and WiFi.
The speed of WiFi networks now exceeds the speed of a wired network. You know two years ago WiFi 6 was getting deployed in India and now we have moved to WiFi 7. We also recently announced a collaboration with Samsung for their WiFi-7 mobile devices. NETGEAR’s WiFi access points can seamlessly be integrated for the best quality roaming and the highest possible speeds.
The other part of the business that we see grow in large and mid-market companies is audio-video-over-IP. This is not focused on very small companies, as they might only have one meeting room put together with a display, camera, microphone, a bunch of speakers, over USB.
However, for large companies, there’s permanent installation in meeting rooms, and that is typically something where big American manufacturers focus on, in this country, like Crestron, Shure, Kramer, QSYS, and others. The 5,000 largest companies in India are deploying these solutions now in this huge booming economy.
The global market for Professional Audio & Video (ProAV) is growing to over 400 billion dollars in 5 years from now and we could say that India is more than just a small percent of that.
5. NETGEAR’s CEO visited India with the vision to expand the Indian market. Could you elaborate on the expansion plans proposed for the Indian market after his visit? Please also elaborate on NETGEAR’s plan of establishing manufacturing facilities in Bangalore, India. Could you shed some light on its establishment plans, if possible?
The expansion plan of NETGEAR in India is in action. When CJ Prober, our new CEO, arrived in the country, we were just starting to define the resources for today and tomorrow. I could say we now have the resources for today and we are busy recruiting the resources for tomorrow, in order to grow the business with the right resources.
We are bringing new products in the IT and AV sectors, and we can see the demand is growing exponentially. The only thing that holds us back is that scaling the teams in all the large cities around the country takes time.
We currently have a presence in the top
20 cities in India, where we could also further expand in the commercial audio-video and broadcast industries. Businesses are also moving to higher networking speeds and to AV-over-IP at the same time. As our broadcast business is not as big yet as the commercial AV business, but we want to catch up, it does require us to do double investments in these resources, focusing on Mumbai and Bangalore, as these cities are the hubs to go after big broadcast.
We see many CIO’s investing in getting A.I. integrated in their companies. The network becomes less of a focal point in their budgets, which plays towards our more economic positioning as an enterprise wired and wireless networking player.
India has always been independent in its geopolitical relations across the world. While the world is in turmoil, India has its own course. In terms of economic growth, India is accelerating. These factors could be an opportunity for the country to take an extra leap. Fast forward 10-15 years from now, and this seems to be a very likely scenario, India could not just be producing technology for the Indian market but for any global market. I think that’s a whole new perspective and Indian people have to get used to that. India as a leading tech manufacturing hub in the world!
We’re not necessarily poised to have our production in every little core market in the world, there is economics in centralization. But if logistics is affordable and the products go in containers on boats, we can move centralized production to decentral, while still optimizing for quality and cost.
However, if the logistics’ costs go up, then we start to produce closer to core markets and that’s a balancing act. According to me, India has the right papers, the skilled workforce, and the willingness from the government to invest so this is a very unique opportunity for us to diversify.
6. Do you think there is a rise in demand for AV products and solutions in India? How is it impacting NETGEAR’s sales strategies?
The rise in demand is an understatement. It’s exploding. India is our fastest growing country in the world, even faster than Middle East or Southeast Asia and that’s particularly driven by the need for conferencing AV solutions. This confirms two things - The fact that the technology in this country moves from AV generic technology
to AV-over-IP, and there’s an economic factor where the Indian economy is still accelerating, accelerating investments. It’s the technology adoption and economic growth that drive business growth. In fact, we can see that bigger projects are coming in, including the Supreme Court of India and with us participating in such projects, integrators will learn to know us now. They’re not shy anymore. They’re confident because we help them in executing these kinds of installations efficiently.
7. Can you highlight any upcoming NETGEAR products or technologies that will address emerging trends like IoT, AI, or edge computing?
AI is still mostly a hype. But there are successes. If you look around in the commercial audio video industry, we have an element of self-learning or Machine Learning. For instance, in a room full of multiple conversations, some people have a very loud voice, and some have a very soft voice. This equity of experience needs to be created by technology. By installing microphones in the ceilings that pick up the voice, digital signal processing can amplify soft voices accordingly.
Another instance is, if multiple people speak in a conference and this conference is also on video, it is called a hybrid meeting. In the old scenario there would be one static camera, which is really boring to watch. But if you use multiple cameras and Machine Learning, speaker tracking is possible. The cameras would focus on the person that’s talking and will change or zoom out if two people are having a conversation.
An Indian university would not want to spend 2,000-plus USD on one access point when they need more than 100. Therefore, we understand the demands of colleges and regional universities in India and we fulfil their need for affordable, fast-roaming, intelligent WiFi. In the higher-education segment, if we can make AI integrated in WiFi affordable, it will be a massive hit and India is probably one of the greatest education systems in the world where companies can get highly skilled labour in millions.
8. What new can the customers expect under the ‘SMB’ division of NETGEAR?
There’s the technology evolution where power-over-ethernet networks are everywhere. It’s possible to just run inexpensive network cables everywhere and then have an amplifier-speaker, a WiFi access point, or camera at the end of that single cable. It’s really easy and a lot more affordable. On the WiFi side, we rapidly move forward towards WiFi 7, ready to be deployed in India as soon as it gets signed off.
We also have lined up services to make it easier for Indian resellers and integrators. They walk around with big smiles because their teams sold a lot in the last couple of years since Covid-19, where they were able to rely on NETGEAR’s presales engineering team. The rebound out of the pandemic in India has been massive, particularly thanks to companies that had to adapt to new networks and video conferencing massively.
9. How does NETGEAR’s Insight Cloud Management platform simplify network management and monitoring for businesses, and what new features can users expect?
Insight Cloud Management is an evolving management platform. The advantage of doing things in the cloud, instead of in the metal boxes, is that we can keep on improving it. Therefore, it is iterative and at the same time simple for us. We listen to what the customers want.
If multiple customers say “this is what I want in a management cloud for networks”, we just add that. In India specifically, we look at the needs of the sector like regional colleges and universities and prove to them that it works by often letting them dry run our products a couple of weeks next to what they already have, once they’re ready for an upgrade.
We’ve automated configuration of radio signal strength and called it Instant WiFi. All that the users must do, is click that button – and a few minutes later it’s done. All the radios will increase or decrease their radio power just to ensure that everything is even, reducing the complexity of optimizing roaming.
We’ve seen that one of our most successful markets for WiFi is India and we also learnt that the reliability and performance combined with ease of use is the winning recipe here.
10. Can you share details about NETGEAR’s partnership with Crestron for audiovisual-over-Internet Protocol solutions and its benefits for end-users?
Crestron is not only one of the largest AV-over-IP manufacturers in the world. They lead the innovation and have a very longstanding position in the Indian professional AV market. NETGEAR shares a supplyand technology integration relation with Crestron. The partnership ensures that we team up together to deploy AV-over-IP and guarantee seamless integrations.
We guarantee a 100% positive outcome if Crestron’s DM-NVX and AirMedia products are deployed with NETGEAR switches.
There are simply three things we need to do: train, train, and train. It’s all about the knowledge-transfer to the Indian integrator community.
11. What is your vision for NETGEAR’s future growth and development over the next five years?
There are a couple of things happening in the technology front, both in the IT and AV sectors. We can say it’s the move to the cloud - because we can pretty much do everything in the cloud, instead of in the local equipment room, more efficiently and cheaper. Only if we don’t have time to send data to the cloud and back, on-premises software-defined networking and edge networking will do the job, The IP network is everywhere in everything we do. We went from calling people on a landline phone, to video conferencing through Teams on smart phones. The network IP world has unlocked a lot of possibilities. We’ll see more applications evolve and AI will be added everywhere.
NETGEAR is here to support the higher bandwidth and lower latency that users need, for 4K resolution in video conferencing, AI, or anything else. Currently, features like making the audio quality go up in Teams or Zoom are starting to get out there. That’s done in software, which is heavily cloud-centric. The pandemic was actually a boost for this, and we expect this to evolve.
Network speeds will go up, especially with AI in picture and NETGEAR will help to shape. In 5 years from now, particularly the Indian market will have done a huge catch up with these technologies because it just goes twice as fast here as it goes in other countries.
