Pruning Trees in Winter is Best Fruit Trees Pruning and training are an important aspect of growing fruit trees. The first few years of a tree’s growth is used to establish a framework. Grow low hanging branches to make fruit picking easy. Once trees are mature, pruning keeps trees healthy and promotes the growth of fruit-bearing wood. Winter tree pruning is done once the tree is dormant. The leaves are gone, the sap is no longer flowing. In Vancouver this work can be done in January and (weather depending) December and February. Ornamental Trees Prune deciduous trees during the dormant season, and broad leaf evergreens in spring just as they are pushing out new growth.

Keep Trees Healthy and Get Ready for Spring Clear away any grass growing around the base of your fruit trees. Apply lime to the base in autumn. It takes 6 months for lime to change your soil’s pH. By spring, your tree will be primed for fruit production. Keep trees’ and hedges’ structure intact by clearing fallen leaves out of the branches. Japanese maples often hold leaves late into fall. Leaves can trap snow which may break branches. It is recommended to manually remove the leaves. Remember to clear snow off trees and hedges. Heavy snow load can irreparably damage your hedge by bending and breaking major branches. We love your hedges as much as you do and want to keep the shape we’ve all worked so hard on!

Jessica Salvador is Co-Owner of Higher Ground Gardens, celebrating over 10 years of service in Dunbar. Higher Ground Gardens is going electric, battery-powered hedge trimming equipment providing a quiet and environmentally friendly service.

Massage Therapy on Dunbar: Promoting Overall Wellness Story by Sarah Gordon

Photos by Sandra Steier

Vicki Bell fell in love with Dunbar the moment she first visited the neighbourhood 14 years ago. When the affable massage therapist contemplated business ownership she knew this was the perfect location for Massage Therapy on Dunbar.

Vicki and her husband Dion Bell left their hometown of Prince Rupert in 2000 to pursue career changes. Vicki was accepted to attend the well-respected West Coast College of Massage Therapy. She was aware massage therapists were in high demand and was excited to move to the big city with its bright lights and endless urban opportunities. After graduating, Vicki was hired as a massage therapist at a clinic in Dunbar where she worked until she decided to venture out on her own in 2011 to open Massage Therapy on Dunbar. Vicki had become smitten with this charming and quiet community and felt like she had come full circle, in a good way. She remarks, “I loved the homey feeling of seeing people walking down the street, making eye contact and saying hello. Decorated in neutral shades of white and taupe with wood wall panels and floral artwork, along with dimmed lighting and soft music, a tranquil atmosphere is created for clients to wind down.

November 15, 2019 - February 15, 2020

Vicki feels extremely fortunate to work alongside her loyal team of registered massage therapists. The all female therapist team takes pride in full commitment to their clients’ well being. They work to alleviate the cause of muscular stress or imbalance, using both manual and active therapies.

“We provide treatment and relief from chronic and acute pain, while improving physical vitality and general well-being.” Vicki Bell Therapeutic massage is used for acute and chronic injuries or full body stress reduction. Treatments are individually tailored to suit a client’s body and needs. Therapists always work with a comfortable pressure for their clients, whether it is a deep tissue massage or lighter treatments. One therapist also specializes in craniosacral therapy.

Vicki says, “Massage has become more popular with every age group.” Massage Therapy on Dunbar treats entire families. Some clients seek treatment for headaches, repetitive strains, car accidents or sporting injuries. Working at computers for extended hours and the weight of heavy backpacks and purses can also cause aches and pains.

“We are seeing an increase in people taking care of their health and leading healthy lifestyles,” Vicki reports. Six years after opening the Dunbar clinic, Vicki realized the demand for appointments was beyond the small clinic’s capacity, so she decided to open a second location in Point Grey. Massage Therapy in Point Grey is conveniently close to Dunbar. In addition to being able to hire more therapists, some of the team work at both locations to offer clients more appointment times, and it has been an overwhelming success.

November 15, 2019 - February 15, 2020

Vicki mentions, “Our clients are excited they now have the option of two locations. If they are unable to get an appointment at Dunbar they can check what’s available at Point Grey and book online.” Making clients happy is a great perk of Vicki’s job. She says, “It is a pleasure to see people arrive happy as they look forward to their appointment, and leave feeling less discomfort, better mobility and relaxed.” Running two locations is a labour of love, which Vicki thoroughly enjoys. Vicki mentions with a laugh, “A day in my life includes treatments, administrative work, ordering supplies, and lots of cleaning and laundry.” She adds, “I am very busy. I really enjoy what I am doing. I love having everything organized and in order.” “Dion is always a huge support, especially during the hectic renovations of both clinics. He helps me with so many things every day at each office. He takes care of I.T., has done office repairs, built both websites, installed every picture, mirror and sign; the list goes on and on,” she says.

Participating in the community is important to Vicki. She enjoys Dunbar Village Business Association’s events and has enjoyed participating in events such as Harvest Fest and Trick or Treat in Dunbar Village. Contributing gift certificates to school and church fundraisers is another way Vicki likes to show her support. The holidays are almost upon us and with the hustle and bustle that will soon take its toll, why not think about giving a gift certificate for a therapeutic or relaxation massage to someone on your gift list? Easy to organize, you can purchase gift certificates through Massage Therapy on Dunbar’s website. It can be mailed or sent directly via email to the lucky recipient. It may end up being the most appreciated gift this season! Massage Therapy on Dunbar 4192 Dunbar Street Vancouver, BC V6S 2E7 Telephone 604-733-3376

CALLING ALL PEEWEE PLAYERS Wanna Lead off and Steal Bases – Come Play 7 Innings With Us

There is Baseball After Little League! Vancouver Community Baseball (VCB) has brought back “Peewee Baseball” after a 10 year absence! In 2019, we formed 6 Peewee teams; 2 travelling and 4 teams that interlocked throughout the lower mainland. All of our Peewee players participated in tournaments throughout the spring and 50% of our players joined one of our summer teams. This allowed many players a total schedule of upwards of 70 games. Peewee teams play out of Chaldecott Park; our jewel diamond since 1994. We look forward to welcoming more Peewee players this season so sign up early. VCB’s mandate is to provide an opportunity for girls and boys to play baseball at all levels; from recreational to elite travelling teams. VCB’s other teams play their home games at Hillcrest Park and Trafalgar Park. These local parks are integral to creating and maintaining our community feel. VCB is run by volunteers. Many volunteers enjoy their involvement so much they continue to actively participate long after their children have aged out of their baseball years! Our heartfelt thanks go out to each of our dedicated coaches and executive! VCB also has many long time local sponsors. They provide support to ensure that our players have the opportunity to play baseball locally. We sincerely thank each of our loyal sponsors. VCB’s parent association is BC Minor Baseball ( This is the largest baseball organization in B.C.; with over 20,000 registered players. VCB has many age tiers of play: Peewee 12-13, Bantam 14-15, Midget 16- 18 and LMBA 19-45. Eligibility falls within the calendar year, from January 1 to December 31. At VCB, we are proud to offer baseball for our youth long after their Little League days. Our aim is to develop, “a sense of belonging to our community” through the great game of baseball.

Registration for the new season begins December 1, 2019 for Peewee and January 1, 2020 for Bantam and Midget players. We look forward to seeing you all in 2020! Let’s play ball!

The main reason I’m featuring this blind at this time of year is: Insulation! Windows can be responsible for up to 50% of your home’s energy losses. Duette shades trap air in distinct pockets, creating exceptional insulation. Hence the company's arrival at First Light as well as its Colour Trends 2020 Palette, a spectrum comprised largely of pastels including jade-green Crystalline AF-485; sky-blue Windmill Wings 2067-60; and sunny Golden Straw 2152-50, among others. The trend toward expressive, saturated colours signifies a departure from the more subdued Colour of the Year 2019, the off-white Metropolitan, which Yeo says is intentional.

The ten harmonious hues of the Colour Trends 2020 palette, including First Light, deliver modern paint colour pairings that combine optimism with understatement, a timeless way to lighten up. According to Hannah Yeo, Colour & Design Manager at Benjamin Moore & Co., this fresh palette is reflective of the world we are living in today. “Today’s changing technology, environmental concerns, and cultural and economic influences are all shaping how we live. Buntain Insurance: Putting People First Story by Sarah Gordon

Photos by Sandra Steier & submitted

Buntain Insurance is a family owned and operated brokerage that has been serving Vancouverite’s for over 50 years. James Buntain opened Buntain Insurance on Oak Street in 1967. In 1975 James’ son Gord began working alongside his father at Dunbar’s first location. Over the years, several moves took place in the Dunbar neighbourhood until arriving at the present office space located next door to Stong’s Market.

Today, the insurance agency operates four offices in Vancouver including Dunbar, Point Grey, Oak Street, South Granville, and a new office is opening soon on Main Street. 24

Danny Buntain is proud to be part of her family’s business. She laughs when she says, “I grew up living and breathing insurance from a young age.” She has strong memories of lending a hand with her siblings and cousins by pulling out staples from carpets within the offices. As she got older she advanced to other office duties such as filing. After returning to Vancouver from working with the organizing committee of the Olympic Games in London, Danny followed in her father Gord’s footsteps and began working in the insurance industry. Gord and his sister Lynn are the principle owners; Lynn has been actively involved since 1972. Currently six members of the Buntain family are working with the agency.

November 15, 2019 - February 15, 2020

“Family is very important to us.” Danny Buntain Gord comments, “Recognizing the potential of growth in the insurance industry and thoroughly enjoying working with people, it has been very satisfying to help develop Buntain Insurance into the company it is today - a thriving, multi-office business employing the best insurance professionals in the business.” Lynn adds, “I have had the pleasure of being part of the company’s development from one small office to our four thriving offices. My journey has evolved from a summer job as a teenager answering phoned to working with a very talented team at the South Granville location. I feel fortunate to see three generations working together in our family business.” In turn, generations of families have turned to Buntain Insurance for their insurance requirements. Some existing clients have dealt with Danny’s father and grandfather. The Dunbar team consists of six employees who specialize in car, home, boat, and seasonal property insurance. They will recommend the best coverage and rates and work with you to help make the proper decision. Danny says, “Our goal is to educate customers as much as possible.” Giving back is very important to the Buntain team. Danny sits on the organizing committee and board of the B.C. Cancer Foundation’s Cypress Challenge that supports pancreatic cancer research. She says, “We take pride in our fundraising involvement.” Locally, Buntain Insurance throws its support behind sports sponsorships including the Dunbar Little League, soccer and football teams. Other community involvement includes Dunbar Village Business Association’s Trick or Treat event, the Vancouver Heritage Foundation’s annual Heritage House Tour, Point Grey Fiesta Days, and Artists in Our Midst, to name a few.

“My grandfather was always big on giving back to the community,” says Danny. She adds, “Our team are actively involved in the events, which allows them a further connection to the community. We live in the community. We support the community. We understand the community.”

ICBC has moved to a more driver-based insurance model. In September 2019, ICBC made some changes to make car insurance better. You may be wondering what this mean for you, as a vehicle owner? Insurance broker Liz Nguyen mentions, “ICBC is asking owners to list other drivers, if any, on their insurance policy. The majority of the premium (75%) will be based on the principal driver and the other 25% is based on the riskiest driver listed.”

November 15, 2019 - February 15, 2020

Jane Buntain | Gord Buntain | Danny Buntain Adding drivers won’t necessarily change your premium – it will depend on the driver factor, which is a three decimal point number that represents your risk on the road. It primarily looks at your driving experience and crash history, as well as whether you are a senior or new resident. If one of the listed drivers causes a crash in your car, the at-fault driver will be held accountable for the crash.

Like her grandfather and father, Danny takes great pride in her family’s business. She concludes, “The thing I like best about this business is the people. We look after families. It’s an honour.”

Danny remarks, “Come in to see us. We are happy to walk you through the process.”

DUNBAR LIFE: Ask An Expert: What causes sensitive teeth?

Sensitive teeth can be caused by worn out tooth enamel, exposed tooth roots due to gum recession, failing existing dental restorations, cavities, or even from grinding/ clenching your teeth at night. If you do experience sensitivity, it’s important to visit your dentist to identify and rule out any underlying causes of your tooth discomfort. Your dentist may recommend sensitive toothpaste, fluoride treatment, dental bondings, or grafting to alleviate the sensitivity. At Dunbar Family Dental, our goal is to help you maintain a healthy smile in a stress-free and comfortable setting. We offer a complete range of dental services, including general and cosmetic dentistry, conventional braces, Invisalign, dental implants, and dental care for children. We’re also proud to announce that our clinic is currently undergoing an expansion of our facilities to provide our patients with additional treatment rooms, new amenities, and a 3D xray machine, along with the newest in dental technologies. Don’t worry we are fully operational during this project and our office is running our normal business hours. We also gladly accept new patients.

In 2013, Laurie Allan-Franks started La Movida Fashion Design Academy based on a simple idea — fashion is fun. Creating is fun. Sewing is fun. This fact has been attracting like-minded students aged 8-16 ever since. While her bright, energetic studio space inspires amazing projects, Laurie points out that this is only part of the experience. La Movida is a fun, inclusive place that celebrates and encourages imagination, newfound skills, and — most importantly — each other. Come see for yourself!

Destination Celebrations One of the fastest-growing trends in the travel industry today is multi-generational destination celebrations. Everyone’s lives are busier than ever, and it’s difficult to get the whole family together for some quality visiting time. Families are often spread over great distances as well, making it even more difficult. The perfect solution to connecting with your family and your close friends is to plan a destination celebration. Destination weddings introduced this concept over a decade ago, but now the idea has spread to include just about any occasion you can imagine. Anniversaries, vow renewals, significant birthdays, a job promotion or retirement are all great reasons to get the family together for a shared vacation. Exploring the family history on a genealogy trip, hiking together, a wellness/spa retreat, seeking culinary and wine adventures, exploring by cruiseship, or just a few days of R&R on a gorgeous beach are all wonderful opportunities for your family to spend some extended time together. There are destinations to suit every possible Transat Travel (formerly Marlin Travel) has been a recognized and trusted name in Canada for over 40 years. All our travel consultants are professionally trained, knowledgeable and experienced, and provide personalized, one-on-one attention.

interest and budget, and several great non-stop flight options make it easy for family and friends to get there. All-inclusive resorts and many cruiseships offer a never-ending array of activities for young kids and teens, as well as great entertainment for the adults. Excursions are available to explore the local culture and history. Dining experiences are a big focus when families travel together. Resorts and cruiseships will offer food for every taste, including local specialities, and can generally accommodate most food allergies. To help celebrate the occasion that has brought your family together, a special meal can often be pre-arranged. Best way to plan your family getaway? Call a Transat Travel professional. Their value goes way beyond their firsthand knowledge to help you decide the best choice for your destination celebration. They will take the stress off your shoulders, take care of all the details, and you can sit back and enjoy the fun. No matter what the occasion, travelling with the people you hold dearest is a wonderful way to reconnect, and the memories will last forever.
