The Palestinian Museum is one of the flagship projects of the Welfare Association. We are a new museum devoted to celebrating the history, culture and society of modern and contemporary Palestine. Nestled among Birzeit’s rolling hills and cascading terraces, the Palestinian Museum will open its doors in Fall 2014 as a physical and virtual space that brings Palestinians – those living in Palestine and those living abroad – together in a shared exploration of their past, present and future. The museum will be an innovative, world-class research and cultural institution that mobilizes Palestinians and encourages them to think, ask questions, and create, while simultaneously engaging a global audience of scholars, researchers and anyone interested in learning more about Palestinian culture and heritage. The Palestinian Museum is dedicated to preserving the tangible and intangible culture of modern Palestine and its people. This means building a collection of objects and historical documents that date from the 19th century to the present that we will hold in public trust for the benefit of present and future generations. We’re also building a digital archive that will hold information about our collection in addition to the extant collections of other Palestinian cultural institutions for the mutual benefit of all. Our goal is to create
a solid foundation of archival, cultural, and educational content through which new knowledge about Palestine can be shared. Our vision for the Palestinian Museum is founded upon the belief that a museum presents information, asks questions, and provides opportunities for visitors to explore and engage with different aspects of culture and history in order to reach their own informed conclusions. Our exhibitions and public programming will address some of the most pressing and
topical issues facing Palestinians today – issues such as Palestinian identity, political and historical agency, the relationship of Palestinians to their land and to each other, and the ways Palestinians have grappled with loss and exile – and we invite all visitors, whether real or virtual, to engage with us and with each other in an open and free conversation about these issues.

As much as we want to engage and excite visitors in our hub in Birzeit, we are also committed to providing an equally meaningful museum experience to those who cannot come to us: the Palestinians living under siege in Gaza; residents of the West Bank whose daily movement is curtailed and hindered by the countless fixed checkpoints scattered throughout; Palestinians inside Israel who are prevented by Israeli military law from entering the Occupied Territories; and the millions of Palestinians who live in the diaspora as refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria, and elsewhere. From our operational nexus in Birzeit,
the Palestinian Museum will reach out to all Palestinians regardless of where they live through the creation of partnerships with cultural centers in various towns and cities throughout Palestine and the world, and through the creation of a dynamic and interactive online Virtual Museum. By reaching out to our audiences, the Palestinian Museum hopes to facilitate the kind of active participation and engagement with Palestinians and those interested in Palestine that is sustainable and that succeeds in building communities, bridging divides and transforming audiences in spite of the barriers that separate us.
A Transnational Museum
Construction of a modern development inspired by the cascading terraces of the local landscape of Birzeit, Palestine, 14km north of Ramallah began in April 2013. These terraces, called sanasil in Arabic, were traditionally formed by stonewalls erected by local villagers, transforming the hilly landscape into graduated steps that were more suitable for agriculture. The museum’s campus will cover 40 dunums (40,000 m2) of land adjacent to Birzeit
University. A series of thematic gardens will flank the museum building to one side and cover the cascading terraces. These gardens will showcase trees, plants, flowers, and herbs that are native to Palestine and the region. Designed by the Dublin-based architectural firm, Heneghan Peng, the building is a modern structure with stone and glass facades that will fit seamlessly within its

natural setting. Construction of the building will be done in two phases. Phase 1 will consist of a built area of 3000 m2, and will include a climate-controlled gallery space, amphitheater, cafeteria with outdoor seating, classrooms, storage, gift shop and staff offices. During Phase 2, which will be completed within ten years, the museum will expand to 9000m2 and will include more gallery space for temporary and permanent exhibitions, an auditorium, additional classrooms, and a library.
في قلب فلسطين ،على مساحة تبلغ 40دونماً ،فوق تالل قرية بيرزيت ،وبمحاذاة أراضي جامعة بيرزيت شمالي مدينة رام هللا ،سيقام صرح المتحف الفلسطيني ،حيث بسمات تجعل منه موقعاً استثنائياً قادراً على يتمتع موقعه ٍ االستلهام من العالقة التي تربط الفلسطينيين بأرضهم. يوفر المكان مجاال ً مفتوحاً وبعيد المدى للرؤية ،إذ يقع على أعلى بقعة من التلة ،ليطل على مناظر طبيعية متنوعة ،وعلى الساحل الفلسطيني وبحره في أ الفق البعيد. يحاكي البناء في تصميمه طبيعة الريف الفلسطيني ويروي تراث المكان ،إذ تم تصميمه ،رغم حداثته ،على شكل مدرجات متتالية تبدأ من رأس التلة لتنحدر مع امتدادها الطبيعي ،فيجمع القدم برونقه ،والحديث بسالسته ،في بهاء يتماهى مع المدرجات (السالسل) الزراعية التي بناها أهل هذه أ الرض منذ القدم ،لجعل أراضيهم الجبلية أكثر تماسكاً وإنتاجاً ،وأكثر قدرة على حفظ الماء للزراعة. بدأت المرحلة التأسيسية من البناء خالل شهر نيسان من العام الجاري ،2013وسيتم خالل هذه المرحلة االنتهاء من بناء القسم أ الول من المشروع ،والذي ستبلغ مساحته 3000 متر مربع ،وعليه سيبدأ المتحف الفلسطيني فعالياته وبرامجه حسب ما هو مخطط له ،على أن يتم في مرحلة الحقة بناء القسم الثاني من المتحف ،والذي ستبلغ مساحته 6000متر مربع ،في نفس الموقع ،ضمن خطة تصل إلى عشر سنوات كحد أقصى من تاريخ بدء التأسيس ،ومن المتوقع افتتاح المتحف مع نهاية عام .2014

المتحف الفلسطيني... نافذة الماضي والحاضر والمستقبل
ما اليوم إال امتداد أ للمس ،والغد لليوم ،فهكذا نحن :حاضر يحمل تراثاً ،ويأتي بالجديد .المتحف الفلسطيني مشروع استراتيجي قد يكون أحد أهم المبادرات التنموية لمؤسسة التعاون ،وهي أكبر مؤسسة تنموية فلسطينية مستقلة، والتي ستجند له ما أمكن من مصادر لتنفيذه خالل السنوات القادمة ،إضافة إلى مشاريعها التنموية أ الخرى .ومن وجهة نظر مؤسسة التعاون ،فإن المتحف سيكون منبراً تنموياً معد وأداة لتعزيز الثقافة الفلسطينية بكل أركانها ،وهو ّ ليربط ويحتضن الفلسطينيين أينما كانوا ،فكراً وإبداعاً وحياة، في الوطن وفي المنفى ،لتبادل الخبرة والمعرفة ،وللطلبة والباحثين ،ولكل قلم وصورة وريشة وقيثارة فلسطينية، ولكل أصدقاء فلسطين. سيفتح المتحف الفلسطيني أبوابه ويكرس أنشطته ويوظف كل مصادره ،بكل الوسائل المقروءة والمرئية والمسموعة، ليكون منبراً لحضارة شعب وقصة نضال ،وليكون محفال ً إلحياء الذاكرة وحفظ التراث ،والنهوض بالثقافة والهوية الفلسطينية رغم كل محاوالت االحتالل لسرقتها وطمسها، وبهذا يجمع الشمل ويتخطى المسافات ويقرب البعيد، رغم كل الصعاب.

في الذكرى ومن الذاكرة بدأنا.. في تخليده للذكرى الخمسين للنكبة ،بادر مجلس أمناء مؤسسة التعاون إلى وضع فكرة لتأسيس متحف على النسانية أرض فلسطين ،ليس فقط لحفظ الذاكرة إ لشعبها وتوثيق الكارثة التي شكلت نقطة تحول في تاريخه الحديث ،وإنما ليسجل قصص هذا الشعب في كفاحه المستمر ،وإصراره على حقه في تقرير المصير. حمل المتحف في بداياته اسم «متحف الذاكرة الفلسطينية» ،إال أن صرحاً سيحمل كل هذا التاريخ ليس له أن يقتصر على الحفاظ على الذاكرة ،بل ال بد له أن يكون منبراً حراً للحوار الفلسطيني ،بتخليده لذكرى الماضي وتوثيق تاريخه ،وبجعله جسراً ثقافياً ومنبراً لطرح أسئلة الحاضر ،وباباً لفتح آفاق المستقبل.
